Domination primary: Hail of Blades dumps 3 ultra-fast autos at end of Ambush, stacking Deadly Venom to 6 before the laner reacts; Taste of Blood heals chunks every gank, Sixth Sense reveals enemy wards, Relentless Hunter scales out-of-combat move speed.
Precision secondary: Triumph refunds HP on takedowns during chaotic skirmishes, Coup de Grace adds +8% damage to enemies under 40% HP for the Contaminate execute.
Against full-tank enemy comps (3+ bruisers), swap Precision to Resolve with Conditioning (bonus armor and MR after 12 min) and Overgrowth (3 max HP for every 8 minions or monsters that die near you) to survive long-range R duels.
Win Condition
Camouflage approach + stacked Deadly Venom + Contaminate execute on the lane ADC. After Hail of Blades and Statikk Shiv come online, every gank is a kill on a target without dash.
Weakness
Worst level-2 invade target in the game — slowest jungler in early skirmishes, completely lost without Ambush. Hard CC (Malzahar R, Skarner R, Lee Sin Q reveal) shuts down the camouflage approach entirely.
Overview
Twitch jungle is the textbook stealth ambush carry: weakest first clear in the game, terrifying once Hail of Blades and Statikk Shiv come online, and game-ending in any post-15-minute teamfight. He clears slowly (no AOE and W is a single skill-shot) but ganks like no other jungler thanks to Ambush (Q) — a camouflage approach that only breaks when an enemy champion comes within 500 units, well inside the 900 units a control ward reveals. After level 6, Spray and Pray (R) turns him into a teamfight piercing-bolt cannon: fire from inside a clumped enemy team and every shot hits 3-5 targets at once. Contaminate (E) is his execute button — after 6 stacks of Deadly Venom (P) on a target, the burst is enormous.
The clear pattern: red buff → krugs → raptors → wolves → blue buff → gromp → Scuttle. Use W on the second auto-attack of each camp to drop poison stacks and speed up the clear. Always full clear with the Gustwalker pet before ganking; pre-6 Twitch has no kill pressure on a healthy lane. From level 6, every gank is the same: walk into a side bush, cast Q (Ambush) to camouflage, walk through fog onto the lane angle, exit stealth with W for the slow and a stack of poison, dump 3 auto-attacks under Hail of Blades for three more, then E for the execute. The Ambush cooldown resets on takedown of any poisoned champion, so a clean gank refunds the next one.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Gustwalker Hatchling (450g) +
1 Health Potion (50g). That is the full 500 gold you start with; the Refillable Potion is a first-back purchase, not a start. Gustwalker is one of the jungle companions that replaced the old jungle starter items on Summoner's Rift: a pet that clears alongside you and empowers your Smite as it grows. The Refillable Potion, bought on the first back, sustains the slow clear since Twitch has no innate healing tool like Void Spike or Q heal.
Core items (in order):
Gustwalker Hatchling — companion pet starter (450g). It grows as you hunt monsters, at no extra gold cost, and completes your jungle quest once fully grown. The grown Gustwalker grants Move Speed every time you enter a brush, more of it right after a large monster dies — not a blanket out-of-combat speed-up, but a reward for the bush-to-bush route Twitch already wants to take to reach a lane with Ambush still up.
Statikk Shiv — first full item rush. Energized is a counter, not a fixed attack number: 100 stacks, 15 per basic attack with this item (6 base plus 9 from its Electroshock passive) and 1 per 24 units travelled. Standing still that is about seven attacks; walking between camps you reach a gank with it already charged, and the next attack throws chain lightning for AOE magic damage. Attack speed also brings Hail of Blades online faster than any alternative.
Berserker's Greaves — attack speed boots, 30% attack speed since 26.16 instead of 25%. Attack speed pays twice in this build: camps fall faster to the passive-stacked autos, and a gank is three autos under Hail of Blades. Mercury's Treads only if the enemy team has 3+ hard CC threats (tenacity = the stat that shortens stuns and slows on you).
Wit's End — on-hit magic damage plus magic resist (MR). The on-hit stacks with Deadly Venom for a flat damage bonus per auto, and the MR keeps Twitch alive against the AP burst (a high-damage spike from a mage in under 2 seconds) that usually deletes him during R. Read the 26.16 change the right way round: base magic resist went up to 33 from 30 and growth down to 1.1 per level from 1.3, so Twitch is tougher against magic damage at every level up to 16 and lands at essentially the same number at 18 (51.7 against 52.1). The early river skirmishes where he is most fragile got easier; Wit's End is bought for the on-hit magic damage it adds, not because the patch made him softer.
Runaan's Hurricane — hypercarry teamfight multiplier. The bolts proc on-hit on 2 extra targets so you stack Deadly Venom on 3 enemies at once, then Contaminate detonates on all of them. Riot buffed the bolt damage in 26.16 and the move speed to 5% from 4%; in the jungle that speed pays between camps, since Ambush already covers the last stretch into a gank.
Lord Dominik's Regards — 35% armor penetration, flat and not scaling, plus Giant Slayer: up to 15% bonus damage against champions, maxed out at 1500 bonus health. Mandatory once a front-liner starts stacking health.
Situational items:
Infinity Edge — when you are ahead and the enemy team has no detection sweepers. A crit already deals 200%, and Infinity Edge takes every piercing bolt during R to 230%; rush this instead of Wit's End in a snowballing game.
Mortal Reminder — against heavy healing comps (Soraka, Vladimir, Aatrox). Replace Lord Dominik's if their healing matters more than their HP stacking.
Edge of Night — against single point-and-click CC that cancels Ambush (Malzahar R, Skarner R, Twisted Fate stun). The spell shield blocks the lock-down ability that would have stopped your gank cold.
Umbral Glaive — against vision-heavy supports (Lulu, Janna, Bard). It reveals enemy stealth wards and traps you walk near and makes your attacks hit them harder, so you clear the vision web before an Ambush approach.
Mercury's Treads — swap from Berserker's against heavy magic CC. Tenacity lets you R out before the enemy team re-engages.
Boots:
Berserker's Greaves is default. Mercury's Treads only against heavy AP CC (Ahri, Lissandra, Twisted Fate); Plated Steelcaps against double-AD threats (two physical damage threats like Yasuo + Caitlyn).
Skill order: Max E first (Contaminate is your big AOE damage button and ramps hard on rank), W second (Venom Cask cooldown for poke and gank lock-down), Q last (Ambush utility scales with item attack speed, not rank). Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Domination with Hail of Blades, Taste of Blood, Sixth Sense, Relentless Hunter. Secondary Precision with Triumph and Coup de Grace, or Resolve with Conditioning and Overgrowth against full-tank comps. Stat shards: Attack Speed / Adaptive Force / Health.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Twitch beats
Squishy carry jungler without hard CC
Karthus's Lay Waste Q is a delayed blast on a fixed spot that cannot interrupt a Camouflaged Twitch ambush. He walks alone in his jungle to power-farm, Death Defied passive zombie window does not save him from Hail of Blades plus Contaminate E burst.
KarthusSquishy carry jungler without hard CC
Kindred's Mounting Dread E needs two follow-up attacks before Wolf pounces, and Wolf's Frenzy W only hits what is already next to her. Twitch ambushes her power-farm position with Ambush Q stealth, 6-stack Contaminate E executes her before Lamb's Respite R can fire.
KindredSlow-clearing low-mobility jungler
Shyvana's Emberstrike Q auto-reset is a tempo tool, not a duel tool — Twitch ambushes her second-camp position and finishes her with 6-stack Contaminate E before she can rotate to Scuttle.
ShyvanaImmobile back-line ADC
Jinx has no dash and her Switcheroo! Q minigun/rocket toggle is stationary cast-time. Late-game Ambush Q flanks behind the back line from fog, 6-stack Contaminate E execute deletes her before Get Excited! passive move-speed reset can fire.
JinxImmobile back-line ADC
Aphelios has no dash and the Weapon Queue System hands him whatever gun comes next, not the one he needs. Late-game Ambush Q flanks behind the back line from fog, 6-stack Contaminate E execute melts him the moment Moonlight Vigil R is spent.
Aphelios
Champions that beat Twitch
Front-loaded bruiser with point-and-click CC
Lee Sin's Sonic Wave Q damages Twitch out of Ambush Q camouflage on contact, and the Resonating Strike follow-up dashes to him for missing-health damage. Tempest / Cripple E reveals every enemy it hits, Safeguard / Iron Will W omnivamp sustains the duel.
Lee SinFront-loaded bruiser with point-and-click CC
Vi's Vault Breaker Q charge tags Twitch through fog, knocks him back and breaks Ambush Q stealth on contact, and Cease and Desist R single-target lock chains the second knock-up. Denting Blows W shreds Armor on every third hit, Relentless Force E blasts through him.
ViFront-loaded bruiser with point-and-click CC
Xin Zhao's Audacious Charge E dash damages everything in the landing area, breaking Ambush Q camouflage before the ambush resolves. Three Talon Strike Q third-hit knock-up locks Twitch in melee, Wind Becomes Lightning W cone slows the kite.
Xin ZhaoFront-loaded bruiser with point-and-click CC
Elise's Cocoon E in human form is a skillshot stun that lands the instant Twitch's Ambush Q stealth drops. Neurotoxin Q applies %-current-HP burst, Volatile Spiderling W chases through fog, Rappel E spider-form descend dodges Spray and Pray R chains.
ElisePoint-and-click suppression jungler
Warwick's Infinite Duress R targets Twitch from any range as a leap-suppress that cannot be cleansed by Mercury's Treads. Blood Hunt W speeds him toward Twitch the moment Twitch drops below half health, Jaws of the Beast Q heals through Deadly Venom passive ticks.

Key matchups
- Lee Sin: Avoid level-2 and level-3 invades. His Sonic Wave (Q) reveals you through Ambush approach and his Tempest (E) AOE clears your camouflage in your own jungle. Clear bot-to-top, hover Scuttle with vision, let your laners catch him if he over-extends.
- Graves: Even early, your favor after level 6. His Smoke Screen (W) nearsights and zones you during a duel pre-6. Wait for an isolated chance — gank his lane with W + AA + E and let your laner peel him from his ADC.
- Elise: Power-spike race. She wins level 3 ganks with her Cocoon (E) stun; you win the level 6 ambush + R. Match her first-clear tempo and trade objectives — hover Drake with vision so she cannot solo it.
- Karthus: Free matchup. He has no escape and walks alone to push waves. Track his position pre-6; at level 6, Q + W + E + R deletes him from across his jungle while he is channeling Requiem.
- Kha'Zix: Even early, slight Twitch favor late. His Leap (E) closes onto you mid-Ambush, but his Q loses its isolation bonus against you whenever a teammate is standing nearby, which in a fight is most of the time. Buy
Edge of Night if he is fed: the spell shield eats his E damage proc.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3 (Q + W + E): Full kit unlocked. Look for an isolated gank — flank a side lane through the river bush, Q to stealth, walk in, W for the slow and a stack, two auto-attacks for two more, then E for the kill. Pre-6 Twitch gank is one of the strongest in the game because the camouflage approach bypasses all face-check vision.
- Level 6 (first Spray and Pray): First teamfight power spike. Drake fights and skirmishes around the river flip to your favor — Ambush onto the back line, R for piercing bolts on a clumped group, exit invisible on takedown reset.
Statikk Shiv + Hail of Blades online (~ minute 9-11): Burst spike. 3 ultra-fast auto-attacks under Hail of Blades put Deadly Venom to 3 stacks in under a second — one stack per attack, six is the cap, and the way to the top is Venom Cask (W), which adds one on impact and one more for every second they stand in the cloud. Contaminate off a full stack finishes any 1500-HP squishy from a clean ambush.
Runaan's Hurricane online (~ minute 22-26): Teamfight breakpoint. Three-target Spray and Pray bolts deal full damage on each, and the Deadly Venom stacks on every enemy at once. With the 26.16 bolt-damage buff, pick the auto-attack target so the two side bolts land on champions rather than on the nearest minion. One Ambush into a clumped team wins the fight.
Common mistakes
- Invading at level 2 or 3. Twitch has the worst level 2-3 in the jungle. Without Hail of Blades stacks and without R, he loses every 1v1 in his own jungle. Always full-clear first; counter-jungle only after level 6 with Ambush approach.
- Using Ambush as an escape. Ambush has a long cast time and oracle lens (a sweeping trinket that reveals stealth) plus control wards cancel it. Stealth is for entering ganks from fog, not surviving counter-ganks — your only escape if caught is Flash and your laner's CC.
- Firing R from outside the enemy team. Twitch's R bolts pierce in a straight line from where he stands. Firing from your own back line means the bolts hit the front-line tank first and the squishies (champions with low defenses, like ADCs and most mages) behind get nothing. Always walk into the densest cluster before R, even at the cost of dying after the R window.
- Skipping Statikk Shiv to rush Wit's End. Wit's End is a survivability item; Statikk Shiv is your damage breakpoint. Without Statikk Shiv first, your clear stays slow and your ganks lack the AOE burst that closes kills.
- Greeding camps after a failed gank. Twitch has no jungle sustain (no W heal, no passive regen). If a gank fails, recall to base — auto-piloting to the next camp gets you killed by the enemy jungler tracking your path.
Advanced tip
Drill the Q-walk-W-AA-AA-AA-E-R gank combo until the inputs are automatic. The trick is the wall-walk under camouflage: when you cast Ambush, the stealth lasts only a few seconds, so plan the angle before you cast. Start the cast from the side bush already pointed at the gank lane, then walk the wall straight into auto-attack range. Exit stealth with W (the slow lands the laner inside Hail of Blades range), dump 3 auto-attacks for Deadly Venom stacks, then E to execute. If the laner has Flash, save E until they burn it — Contaminate hits from 1200 units, so even if they blink out you can still detonate. Done cleanly, this combo deletes a 1700-HP target in under 2 seconds and the Ambush reset on takedown sets up the next gank with no cooldown. The skill ceiling is angle planning: every successful Twitch gank is decided before the camouflage starts.
