Domination with Hail of Blades: it front-loads Attack Speed and bonus true damage over the first 3 attacks, the whole burst window before New Destiny (P) reloads. Sudden Impact adds 20-80 true damage right after Quickdraw (E), Sixth Sense and Treasure Hunter pay for the map play.
Precision secondary: Triumph restores 5% missing health plus 2.5% max health on every takedown, which is what lets Graves keep pathing after a close gank, and Coup de Grace adds 8% damage under 40% HP, exactly where Collateral Damage (R) finishes.
Win Condition
Snowball lethality through invades and ganks before minute 14. Once Eclipse is up, contest every objective: two shotgun volleys kill a squishy, and Quickdraw (E) buys you the exit.
Weakness
Mana-hungry early. Your shotgun reload window punishes greedy positioning, and you melt under hard CC chains because you have no built-in safety beyond E's armor buff.
Overview
Graves is a marksman that lives in the jungle, not in the bot lane. His shotgun-style auto-attacks and the armor buff baked into Quickdraw (E) let him fight tanks and brawlers head-on, while still bursting squishies down with lethality. The whole kit is built around tempo — clear fast, invade on cooldown, and trade your jungle priority for kills before the enemy carries scale.
His game plan is simple: in the first 8 minutes you are the strongest dueller on the map, so use that. Power-farm a clean clear, look at the map, and walk into whichever lane has Flash down or low HP. After Eclipse you contest objectives; after three items you are a teamfight skirmisher who deletes back lines from a flank — but you do not splitpush late, because a Graves caught alone at minute 30 is one CC chain from dying.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Gustwalker Hatchling (450g) +
1 Health Potion (50g). That is the full 500 gold you start with; the Refillable Potion is a first-back purchase, not a start. Gustwalker is the Summoner's Rift jungle starter. The companion grows on treats, not on a clock: 15 for the first evolution, 35 for the second, which also completes the jungle Role Quest and turns Smite into Primal Smite. Once fully grown, Gustwalker grants move speed when you enter a brush, increased after killing a large monster: that is the effect that shortens your paths between camps and lanes. The Refillable Potion you buy on that first back refills for free at base, saving gold on chip damage from camps.
Core items (in order):
- Eclipse — 60 attack damage and 15 ability haste, plus the Ever Rising Moon passive: it carves out a slice of the target's maximum health (8% for melee champions, 5% for ranged) and hands you a shield for 2 seconds, once every 6. It carries no omnivamp and no lethality: both were removed in patch V14.1. The shield procs after two hits, which lines up with your shotgun rhythm.
- Plated Steelcaps vs AD-heavy teams / Mercury's Treads vs 3+ hard CC. Default is Plated.
- Youmuu's Ghostblade — movement-speed active and lethality, your gap-close and gank-finisher tool.
- Serylda's Grudge — armor pen scaling for late game when enemies start stacking armor; the slow on damaged targets keeps you in range.
Situational items:
- Edge of Night — vs single-target lock-on ults (Malzahar, Skarner, Warwick).
- The Collector — when you are ahead and want execute pressure on squishies.
- Maw of Malmortius — vs heavy AP burst (Diana, Syndra, Lux mid).
- Death's Dance — vs teams with two strong physical damage dealers (e.g. Yasuo + Caitlyn). The damage you take gets spread out as a slow bleed instead of arriving instantly.
- Bloodthirster — late game when you need a fifth damage item with built-in shield and lifesteal.
Boots: Plated Steelcaps default. Berserker's Greaves only if the enemy has zero CC threats and you specifically want attack-speed scaling — a niche pick on Graves.
Skill order: Max Q first (clear and damage), E second (each rank lowers the cooldown, so you get more dashes), W last (the slow scales fine on rank 1). R at 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Domination with Hail of Blades, Sudden Impact, Sixth Sense, Treasure Hunter. Secondary Precision with Triumph + Coup de Grace for snowball pressure, or Resolve with Second Wind + Revitalize if you expect to be poked in your jungle.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Graves beats
Melee assassin jungler
New Destiny (P) 4-pellet burst at point-blank deletes squishy assassins; Quickdraw (E) armor stacks tank empowered Savagery (Q) before he can reset bushes for a second Thrill of the Hunt (R) jump. Smoke Screen (W) blocks the bush vision he needs to leap.
RengarMelee duelist without ranged disengage
Smoke Screen (W) blocks the Blood Hunt (W) vision passive and takes away the sight he needs to line up Infinite Duress (R); Graves kites at 425 auto range while Quickdraw (E) stacks armor against Jaws of the Beast (Q) heal. Collateral Damage (R) closes the duel.
WarwickEngage jungler with single-target lock
Cease and Desist (R) commits on one champion — once spent on a frontliner Vi has no second engage, and End of the Line (Q) plus Collateral Damage (R) bursts her down. Quickdraw (E) armor stacks tank Vault Breaker (Q) charge windup damage.
ViEngage jungler with single-target lock
Demacian Standard (E) plus Dragon Strike (Q) flag-and-drag commits on one target; once spent on a tank Graves bursts him at point-blank with New Destiny (P) pellets. Cataclysm (R) walls can be exited via Quickdraw (E) dash before the knockup chains.
Jarvan IvBurst-window mobile carry flexed jungle
Quickdraw (E) armor stacks tank Vault (E) knockback burst window, and Smoke Screen (W) denies Heightened Senses (W) reveal. End of the Line (Q) detonating on her interrupts the Behind Enemy Lines (R) channel before she can reposition.
Quinn
Champions that beat Graves
Long-range AP poke jungler
Javelin Toss (Q) outranges End of the Line (Q), and the Quickdraw (E) armor stacks do nothing against it because armor does not reduce magic damage; Aspect Of The Cougar (R) Pounce (W) gap-closes during Graves reload window before he can re-pellet at point-blank range.
NidaleeTank jungler that resists burst invade
Fury of the North (P) passive and Arctic Assault (Q) lock Graves at melee range; the New Destiny (P) shotgun burst cannot cut through her stacked health before Glacial Prison (R) chains the stun. Permafrost (E) slows the Quickdraw (E) reposition dash.
SejuaniScaling jungler that outlasts his early
Alpha Strike (Q) makes Master Yi untargetable mid-shotgun cone; Highlander (R) move speed kites Quickdraw (E). Once his items come online around minute 25, his on-hit damage outscales a lethality Graves, and Quickdraw (E) armor no longer holds him off.
Master YiAP jungler with channel fear setup
Terrify (Q) fear chains through Smoke Screen (W) vision denial since it is point-and-click; Under Crowstorm (R), the Bountiful Harvest (W) drain heals him through the whole shotgun burst. Reap (E) silence cancels End of the Line (Q) detonation.
FiddlesticksTarget-denial skirmisher with percent-HP true damage
Hallowed Mist (W) denies target lock during the New Destiny (P) reload window, and the centre of Snip Snip! (Q) is true damage, so True Grit armour from Quickdraw (E) does nothing against it. Skip 'n Slash (E) kites the cone and Needlework (R) chases through Smoke Screen (W).
Gwen
Key matchups
- Hecarim: He outscales you past 3 items but loses skirmishes pre-6 if you dash in with E and then keep spacing your auto-attacks so he never gets a free hit. Punish him before minute 9, then back off — do not 1v1 him after his first item.
- Lee Sin: Mirror tempo matchup. Both win the first 6 levels; the jungler with more ganks wins. Track his Q cooldown and W-jump windows; if his Q is down, your shotgun wins the trade outright.
- Master Yi: Must-kill before his level 6 + first item. W on top of him during his Q active blocks his vision so he loses the lock — practice this in Practice Tool until it's reflex.
- Vi: Tanky and gank-heavy. She loses extended skirmishes if you have E charges; do not get caught in the air by her Q — that's a guaranteed all-in for her side.
- Diana: Snowballs hard post-6. Save W for her R windup (it doesn't break the engage, but the slow on impact extends her commit and gives your team time to peel). Build Maw of Malmortius as your second damage item.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3: Full kit unlocks. Your gank pattern is E into range → Q off the wall behind them → basic attack → W on their retreat path. With Hail of Blades runes, this kills any squishy at 60% HP and no Flash.
- Level 6: Collateral Damage unlocks the long-range execute. The shell hits the first champion and then bursts in a cone — flash a target into a wall and you guarantee both the direct hit and the cone damage.
- Eclipse timing (~ minute 9): You win every contested objective fight. Force a fight on Scuttle, Drake, or Voidgrubs in this window — past 12 minutes, scaling junglers (Hecarim, Master Yi) start matching your pace.
- 3 items (~ minute 22): You become a teamfight flanker. Your job is to flank the enemy back line (their squishy carry, the one furthest from their tank) and burst it before they can react. Do not engage from the front.
Common mistakes
- Spending E to dodge instead of to reload. E is a single dash, not two: there are no charges to burn. It reloads one shell, it stacks True Grit armour (two stacks if you dash toward a champion) and each pellet that lands afterwards cuts 0.5 seconds off its cooldown, so a clean four-pellet volley pays back 2 seconds. Dashing away from the fight throws all of that away and leaves you with no gap-close for up to 12 seconds.
- Q-ing into the back of a wall by accident. End of the Line detonates instantly on terrain. If you Q with your back to a wall, the shell explodes behind you for zero damage. Always check your facing before you cast.
- Smoke Screen on yourself for sustain. W does not heal. The slow on impact is the value — throw it on the enemy carry's retreat path, not on top of yourself.
- R from full range with no setup. The shell is dodgeable at long range. Use R point-blank after a Flash or as a pre-fired finisher when an enemy has already committed Flash. Don't open fights with it unless they are walking in a straight line through fog.
- Splitpushing at minute 30. Late-game Graves has no escape if a Skarner/Warwick/Malzahar lands their R. Group with your team after minute 25 and play flanks from team-fight range, not 1v1 in a side lane.
Advanced tip
The E-buffer-roll technique: while you are mid-Q windup or auto-attack windup, queue a Quickdraw input. The dash fires the moment the windup completes, so you get the auto/Q damage and reposition in the same animation cycle — you keep DPS uptime while dodging or chasing. The recovery window where you cannot move is roughly 0.4 seconds without this; with the buffer roll, it's almost zero. Practice it on training-tool dummies until your stutter-step rhythm is auto-attack → E → auto-attack without pausing.
