Precision: Conqueror ramps bonus AD as Trundle keeps swinging — its 5s stack window lines up with Chomp + W extended duels. Triumph restores 5% of your missing health plus 2.5% of your max health on takedown, Bloodline stacks lifesteal, Last Stand adds damage below 60% HP.
Resolve: Bone Plating reduces damage from the next 3 hits after poke — critical against melee bursters. Unflinching gives 10 armor and magic resist while you are CC'd and for 2s after, smoothing chain-CC aimed at peeling Trundle off the carry.
Vs heavy AP teams (Vladimir, Cassiopeia, Karthus), swap Resolve to Sorcery with Manaflow Band (mana sustain for Chomp spam) and Transcendence (ability haste so Pillar of Ice comes back faster for repeat zoning).
Win Condition
Stack Chomp's AD-steal to win extended trades, drop Frozen Domain before every all-in, and R the enemy tank or bruiser to flip stats in your favor. Snowball into side-lane 1v1s.
Weakness
Almost no mobility outside the brief Frozen Domain speed boost. Ranged tops who out-poke and kite (Quinn, Vayne, Gnar) starve Trundle of trades, and shielding/healing supports nullify Subjugate's drain.
Overview
Trundle is a bruiser (a melee fighter that mixes damage with survivability) built around two ideas: stealing the enemy's stats and out-healing them in long fights. His passive King's Tribute gives him free HP every time anything dies near him — minions, monsters, champions — so he rarely has to back to heal. His Q, Chomp, is an empowered auto-attack that bites for bonus damage and steals some of the target's Attack Damage for a few seconds. That AD swap is the engine of every trade: he hits harder and his target hits softer at the same time. His ultimate, Subjugate, drains a chunk of the target's Health, Armor and Magic Resist over 4 seconds — designed to delete tanks and juggernauts (slow, immobile melee champions that hit hard).
His game plan in top lane: stack Chomp auto-attack steals on the wave, drop Frozen Domain (W) under his feet before any all-in for healing and attack speed (how many basic attacks he fires per second), and finish with Pillar of Ice (E) behind the enemy to cut their retreat. Once R is online, every duel goes through the stat-drain — the tankier the opponent, the harder Trundle hits them.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Doran's Shield +
Health Potion. The HP-regen passive softens enemy poke (low-cost ranged damage chipping your HP) until level 3, when all three basic abilities unlock and you can start winning trades.
Core items (in order):
Stridebreaker — first-item spike. The active is not a dash: it hits everything around Trundle for physical damage, slows them by 35%, and gives him 35% decaying move speed for 3 seconds per champion hit. That move speed is the actual gap-closer (a tool to close distance fast) his kit is missing, and the slow buys the seconds Chomp and Pillar of Ice need. AD and HP round it out; it no longer grants ability haste.
Plated Steelcaps — default boots when the enemy hurts you mostly with basic attacks. Reduces that damage in extended trades (back-and-forth exchanges of damage in lane).
Sundered Sky — every fight, your first auto-attack on a champion is a guaranteed crit (160% damage, cut from 175% in patch 26.01) and heals you for 90% of your base AD plus 4% of your missing HP. The crit triggers off Chomp's empowered auto, so the heal lands on demand the moment a duel starts.
Sterak's Gage — HP, tenacity, and bonus attack damage worth 50% of your base AD (raised from 45% in patch 26.16), so it grows with your level, not your items. Lifeline gives a decaying shield worth 60% of your bonus health when you would drop below 30% health, lasting 4.5 seconds on a 90-second cooldown: exactly when you need extra time to drop Pillar of Ice and reset the fight on Frozen Domain.
Death's Dance — turns burst AD (high damage in 1-2 seconds, like an assassin combo) into a slow bleed (damage spread over the next seconds). On kill, the remaining bleed gets cleansed — perfect for chasing the next target after an R-drain duel.
Situational items:
Mercury's Treads — swap from
Plated Steelcaps vs heavy magic damage or chained CC (crowd control: stuns, roots, knockbacks). Tenacity is critical when teams chain-CC Trundle off the carry.
Spirit Visage — vs heavy AP (Ability Power, the stat behind magic damage). MR plus a healing-amp passive that boosts every heal: King's Tribute, Frozen Domain, Death's Dance, R lifesteal.
Serpent's Fang — vs shield-stacking comps (Lulu, Karma, Janna). Cuts incoming shield value by 50%, so the carry you R-drain doesn't get Lulu-W'd into invulnerability mid-channel.
Serylda's Grudge — vs heavy-armor frontlines (Rammus, Malphite, Tahm Kench). 35% armor penetration, plus a 30% slow that only lands on enemies below 50% Health, including Chomp.
Dead Man's Plate — when you need the Move Speed stack passive to walk down kiters (Quinn, Vayne top, Gnar) and reach Chomp range.
Boots:
Plated Steelcaps is the default. Switch to
Mercury's Treads vs three or more CC sources or heavy magic damage.
Skill order: Max Q first (main damage, AD-steal scales per rank). Max W second and do it without hesitating: patch 26.17 raised Frozen Domain's attack speed from 30/45/60/75/90% to 30/50/70/90/110%, so every point after the first is worth 20% attack speed instead of 15%, while rank 1 is unchanged. Max E last (cooldown drops slightly, slow and pillar duration barely scale). Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror (the keystone — stacks bonus AD up to 12 stacks). Pair with Triumph, Legend: Bloodline, Last Stand. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating and Unflinching. Shards: Adaptive Force + Adaptive Force + Health Scaling.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Trundle beats
HP-stacking tank who relies on raw stats
Feast (R) hands Cho'Gath bonus Health, exactly the pool Subjugate (R) drains as a percentage over four seconds. His Carnivore healing cannot keep pace with King's Tribute, and Pillar of Ice (E) puts terrain between them so Rupture (Q) never gets a clean target.
Cho GathHP-stacking tank who relies on raw stats
Maximum Dosage (R) heals Mundo as a percent of his Health, so Subjugate (R) directly answers it by draining Health, Armor and Magic Resist for four seconds. Goes Where He Pleases shrugs off slows but not the drain, and Infected Bonesaw (Q) cannot out-trade Chomp (Q)'s AD steal.
Dr MundoShort-range melee bruiser without hard disengage
Frenzied Maul (W) only works in melee, and Stormbringer (R) is a committed leap with no way back. Pillar of Ice (E) walls Volibear off the wave, Chomp (Q) keeps shaving his Attack Damage, and Conqueror keeps Trundle healing through the long fight.
VolibearShort-range melee bruiser without hard disengage
Garen has no dash, and Decisive Strike (Q) is a short-range attack he must walk into range to use. Pillar of Ice (E) makes that walk longer, Chomp (Q) strips the Attack Damage Judgment (E) spins with, and Conqueror heals Trundle as long as Garen stands in the spin.
GarenLate-game scaling melee with weak early laning
Nasus must farm Siphoning Strike (Q) stacks before he threatens anything, and Soul Eater only heals while he lands attacks. Chomp (Q) takes Attack Damage off him each trade, and Frozen Domain (W) gives Trundle a patch where he heals and swings faster than Nasus can answer.
Nasus
Champions that beat Trundle
Ranged kiting top with built-in escape
Tumble (Q) resets her attack outside Chomp (Q) range, and Silver Bolts (W) deals true damage every third hit, scaled to the Health he spends the game stacking. Condemn (E) walls him for a stun, and Night Hunter's speed lets her go around a Pillar of Ice (E) instead of into it.
VayneRanged kiting top with built-in escape
Quinn's Vault E dashes onto Trundle, slows and interrupts him, then bounces HER back to attack range — she is displaced, not him, so the window closes the instant she lands. Blinding Assault Q blinds his attack, and Heightened Senses W speed keeps her outside Pillar of Ice E.
QuinnDuelist with parry on low cooldown
Fiora's Riposte (W) parries Chomp (Q) and answers with a 25% slow, not a stun — it only stuns on an immobilizing effect, which he lacks. Opening with Subjugate (R) still gets parried. Without Chomp there is no AD steal, and Duelist's Dance true damage outpaces King's Tribute.
FioraRanged top with built-in stun
Gnar's Boomerang Throw Q pokes from 1100 range, outside Chomp Q melee. Mega Gnar's GNAR! R throws Trundle in a direction — it only stuns against a wall, so fight in open ground with no terrain at your back. Hop / Crunch E lands him outside the Pillar of Ice E zone.
GnarRanged top with built-in stun
Kennen stuns after three Mark of the Storm stacks, built by Thundering Shuriken (Q) without ever entering Chomp (Q) range. Lightning Rush (E) carries him past a Pillar of Ice (E), and Slicing Maelstrom (R) stuns Trundle again before the first stun wears off.

Key matchups
- Cho'Gath: Favorable. Chomp (Q) steals his AD on every trade. At level 6, wait for him to fully Feast (R) up before pressing Subjugate — the inflated HP and resistances you steal stay stolen for 4 seconds, exactly when his Feast would normally win the duel.
- Dr. Mundo: Heavy favored. Mundo's whole identity is HP-stacking and self-healing. Subjugate drains both. Push the wave, fight every cooldown, and shut him down before he hits the
Sunfire Aegis +
Heartsteel spike. - Garen: Skill matchup (the better player wins). Decisive Strike (Q) silences and speeds him at you. Bait it by walking sideways, drop Pillar of Ice (E) behind him as he commits — the wall blocks his Judgment (E) spin escape and Chomp finishes the trade.
- Quinn: Hard matchup. Quinn out-ranges Trundle from level 1 and Vault (E) dashes onto him for a slow and a brief interrupt; it's Quinn who bounces back afterward, not Trundle. Freeze the wave near your tower (stop pushing, keep the wave on your side) to deny her CS, and call your jungler.
- Fiora: Hardest melee matchup. Riposte (W) parries Chomp (Q) and slows you by 25% instead of feeding you a stun, and it eats the front of the fight either way. Never press R first — Riposte cancels the channel mid-cast. Bait Riposte with a basic auto first, then Chomp + R the moment her W is on cooldown.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3: With Q + W + E all unlocked, you have the full short-range toolkit. Drop W on the minion line, walk in for Q, and place E behind the enemy as they try to back off — the first all-in window, usually unexpected.
- Level 6: First Subjugate. Find a fight within 60 seconds — the R-drain flips an even duel into a guaranteed kill, especially against a tank or bruiser. The stolen resistances still linger 4 seconds after R ends, so keep pressing — by then they should be dead.
Stridebreaker completion (~ minute 10-13): The slow plus the burst of move speed finally lets Trundle stick to a target he has caught, the closest thing his kit has to a gap-closer. Force side-lane 1v1s and roam (leave lane to help mid or bot) for picks (kills on isolated enemies). This is when Trundle snowballs (small early lead → kill → gold → bigger lead).- 3-item spike (~ minute 22-26): Stridebreaker + Sundered Sky + Sterak's online. Trundle 1v1s any frontline and out-trades most carries without double shields. Push side lanes alone — the enemy needs 2 people to stop you, freeing Baron or Drake.
Common mistakes
- Pressing R on the tank when the carry is the real threat. Subjugate is single-target and channels for 4 seconds. Dropping it on Malphite when their Caitlyn is 3-shotting your team wastes the only stat-drain tool you have. Save R for the highest-AD or highest-armor champion.
- Casting R into a Fiora parry. Riposte (W) eats the front of the channel, so bait it with a basic attack first, then Chomp plus R the moment her W is down. Against Olaf the drain works normally (Ragnarok cleanses disables, and Subjugate is not crowd control), but his Reckless Swing E deals true damage that your stolen resistances do nothing about: win the stat race, not the damage race.
- Skipping Frozen Domain (W) before fights. New players forget to drop W and just walk in for Chomp. The bonus attack speed and healing amp are 60-80% of Trundle's duelling power; without the patch on the ground, every trade is half-strength.
- Pillar of Ice (E) on top of the target instead of behind. E blocks pathing as a wall. Drop it behind the enemy as they retreat — they have to walk around, losing 1-2 seconds while Chomp and autos chunk them. Pillar on their feet just slows them while they keep moving toward your tower.
- Chasing ranged kiters past Tier 2 turret. Trundle has no dash and no disengage: his 350 base move speed gets him around the map but does nothing once someone commits on him. Without W under his feet, every step past your turret is a free gank (enemy jungler arriving for a kill).
Advanced tip
Practice the R-cast timing on temporary stats: Subjugate steals at the exact frame Trundle presses R, not at the end of the channel. So if the enemy just popped a temporary defensive item or buff — Renekton's Dominus (R) bonus HP, Mundo's Maximum Dosage (R) regen, a freshly-triggered
Sterak's Gage shield — pressing R the instant after locks Trundle into the inflated stats. The opposite is also true: press R before they use the cooldown and you only steal their base stats, while the buff lands on top of what is left, so your drain takes far less than it could have. Watch enemy item cooldowns and Ult bar, then time R right after they commit — that single piece of timing turns even fights into kills.
