Core Abilities

Perseverance
Regenerates health whenever Garen has taken no damage and no enemy ability for a few seconds. It sets his whole trade pattern: step in, hit, step out, heal back up.
Decisive Strike
Decisive Strike
Burst of move speed and slow cleanse. His next basic attack silences the target for 1.5s and deals bonus damage.
Courage
Courage
Passive: killing units stacks permanent armor and magic resist. Active: a shield plus tenacity (shorter crowd control), followed by a short window of reduced damage taken.
Judgment
Judgment
AOE spin dealing physical damage to nearby enemies for 3s. Main waveclear and sustained DPS tool.
Demacian Justice
Demacian Justice
True-damage execute on a single enemy champion: 125/200/275 plus 25/30/35% of the health they have already lost. No AD scaling, no priority target.

Why these runes

Precision with Conqueror: Judgment (E) ticks on a champion, so two spins are enough to reach 12 stacks and the 8% healing on the damage Garen deals. Triumph refunds health on takedowns, Legend: Alacrity speeds the spin ticks, Last Stand adds up to 11% damage below 30% HP.

Why secondary

Resolve secondary: Second Wind heals 4% of missing health over 10s after every trade, which is what keeps Garen in lane against ranged tops, and Unflinching adds 10 Armor and Magic Resist while you are crowd controlled, the moment that cuts Judgment (E) short.

Win Condition

Survive lane phase with Doran's Shield + passive sustain, scale to Stridebreaker, then flank in side lane and use R to execute wounded enemy carries in teamfights.

Weakness

No dash or blink, no ranged hard CC. Vulnerable to kite (Quinn, Vayne) and long-range root (Lissandra, Mordekaiser pull). Falls behind in lane if you over-extend without W stacks.

Overview

Garen is a melee juggernaut whose value comes from sustained presence: passive Perseverance regenerates health out of combat, Decisive Strike (Q) lets him close gaps with cleanse, Courage (W) gives a flat tankiness window plus a passive resistance stack, Judgment (E) is his AOE damage and waveclear, and Demacian Justice (R) executes squishies with true damage that scales on the health they have already lost, against any target. He is one of the simplest champions to mechanically execute, which means the entire skill ceiling sits in map awareness and wave management — not in combo execution.

In top lane he wants short trades during W's active and full waves on his side of the lane. He is strong from level 1 but not unkillable; he has no dash and no hard CC, so any matchup that can disengage at will (Quinn, Vayne) or root him from range (Lissandra, Mordekaiser pull) will outscale his lane phase if you over-extend.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Shield + 1 Health Potion. Doran's Blade only into ranged tops where you need to all-in early to deny CS.

Core items (in order):

  1. Stridebreaker — 40 AD, 25% attack speed, 450 health. The active slows everything nearby by 35% and gives you 35% decaying move speed per champion hit, which is the gap-close Garen's kit does not have.
  2. Plated Steelcaps — most top lanes are auto-attack-heavy. Mercury's Treads only into 3+ CC champions on the enemy team.
  3. Dead Man's Plate — synergy with Q movement bonus, the impact passive procs in your usual all-in pattern.
  4. Sterak's Gage — 400 health, 20% tenacity, and bonus attack damage worth 50% of your base AD, so it grows with your level and not with your other items. Lifeline shields you for 60% of your bonus health when you would drop below 30% health, decaying over 4.5 seconds on a 90-second cooldown. It buys you the seconds to finish a spin; it does not change R's execute threshold, which has no AD scaling at all.

Situational items:

  • Maw of Malmortius — into AP top lane (Mordekaiser, Rumble, Vladimir).
  • Death's Dance — into double-AD comps (works around the bleed mechanic that punishes glass cannons).
  • Force of Nature — into 3+ AP threats; the movement speed passive helps you path to fights.
  • Spear of Shojin — top-tier offensive third item if you are massively ahead and want the ability haste cycle.

Boots: Plated Steelcaps default. Mercury's Treads against Renekton+Lissandra+heavy CC.

Skill order: Max E first (DPS and waveclear), Q second (slow + utility), W last (passive value scales fine without points). Take R at 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Last Stand. Secondary Resolve with Second Wind + Unflinching, or Inspiration with Magical Footwear + Cosmic Insight for boot timing on rotation maps.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Garen beats

  • Short-cooldown melee bruiser with grit shield

Decisive Strike (Q) silence cancels Knuckle Down (Q) empowered autos before he casts, and Facebreaker (E) only stuns if Sett catches Garen right, and Garen need not walk into it. Perseverance (P) regen heals between trades while his grit bar stays below Haymaker (W) threshold.

    Sett
  • Short-cooldown bruiser with fury stun

Decisive Strike (Q) silence interrupts Ruthless Predator (W) stun cast before fury empowers it; Courage (W) active eats the Cull the Meek (Q) heal-trade burst. Without Garen committing autos his fury bar stalls and Dominus (R) is the only late answer.

    Renekton
  • AP melee assassin flexed top

Decisive Strike (Q) silence cancels Shunpo (E) reset chain mid-cast, and Courage (W) active plus its stacked magic resist eats the Death Lotus (R) channel outright. Demacian Justice (R) executes once she overextends the dive without a Bouncing Blade (Q) mark to bounce off.

    Katarina
  • AD melee assassin flexed top

Decisive Strike (Q) silence cancels the Assassin's Path (E) parkour mid-vault and Courage (W) active soaks the Noxian Diplomacy (Q) plus Shadow Assault (R) burst. Talon has no engage tool after the dash so he stalls in lane while Perseverance (P) regens.

    Talon
  • Slow-windup scaling juggernaut

Decisive Strike (Q) silence interrupts the Siphoning Strike (Q) empowered cast right before each stack; Judgment (E) spin chips Nasus out of Spirit Fire (E) regen radius. Perseverance (P) heal beats his HP-stack regen cycle in extended trades.

    Nasus

Champions that beat Garen

  • Ranged carry that kites his Q

Condemn (E) knocks Garen out of Decisive Strike (Q) range and stuns him against terrain; Tumble (Q) steps her clear each time Garen closes, so Q plus auto never lands and Perseverance (P) gets no time to heal. Silver Bolts (W) true damage shreds through Courage (W) resistances.

    Vayne
  • Slippery short-cooldown harasser

Hallowed Mist (W) makes Gwen untargetable mid-Judgment (E) spin, breaking the AOE damage tick chain. Skip 'n Slash (E) dash kites Decisive Strike (Q) and Snip Snip! (Q) true damage on the last snip bypasses Courage (W) damage reduction.

    Gwen
  • Hypermobile duelist with parry

Riposte (W) parries Decisive Strike (Q) but only slows, since silence is not Immobilizing, opening a free Bladework (E) trade. Lunge (Q) dashes through Judgment (E) spin radius and Grand Challenge (R) hits four vitals before Garen can stack Perseverance (P) regen between trades.

    Fiora
  • Sustain bruiser with point-and-click pull

Apprehend (E) pull bypasses Decisive Strike (Q) silence by yanking Garen out of position, and Noxian Guillotine (R) wins the execute race against Demacian Justice (R) on Hemorrhage (P) stacks. Crippling Strike (W) slow keeps Garen in melee range.

    Darius
  • Outscaling top with invuln window

Divine Judgment (R) invulnerability cancels the all-in spike and the Demacian Justice (R) execute attempt. From level 6 Kayle is already ranged at 525 units, well outside Judgment (E), and at 11 her attacks add fire waves: the lane is unwinnable long before her item spikes.

    Kayle

Key matchups

  • Darius: Lose level 1, win after Stridebreaker if you avoid his E pull. Buy Doran's Shield, hug Q level for the cleanse.
  • Fiora: You beat her until level 6, as long as she does not land her Vitals on you. Trade with W active to deny her parry value, then disengage.
  • Quinn: Skill matchup; she kites with Q blind + E vault. Take Teleport, give up the CS on the first wave, and roam to mid from wave 4 onward.
  • Vayne top: Your worst-feeling matchup. Build Plated Steelcaps level 1, take Doran's Shield + Second Wind, and play for the jungler — you cannot win 1v1 trades after 6 on this matchup.
  • Mordekaiser: Slow lane into a death realm spike. Trade short, hit Q + E when his W is on cooldown, and back to Maw of Malmortius before his second item.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: Q + E unlocks a real all-in. If they push the wave to you and your jungler is on top side, this is your kill window.
  • Level 6: Demacian Justice lets you finish low-HP targets that previously walked away. Track enemy summoners; without Flash, every melee top is in execute range.
  • Stridebreaker timing (~ 11 minutes): Wave control flips in your favor. Slow shove, freeze, or split push depending on map state. Q + active is gap-close insurance against ganks.
  • Late game: with R scaling off the health the enemy has already lost, plus Sterak's Gage, you become a flanking threat that kills carries on your own. Your job is to spin up E where they cannot see you (inside the fog of war) and land R before their support can push you off the carry.

Common mistakes

  • Walking up at low W stack count. Courage passive grants resistances per stack; if you have 0 stacks (e.g. just respawned), avoid extended trades until you reload via minions.
  • Using R as opener. R is for execution, not setup. If you open with it, the cast time tells the enemy to disengage, and you lose the kill timer.
  • E into a stationary wave. Garen pays no resource, so the cost of a wasted Judgment is entirely the cooldown: 9 seconds at rank 1, 6 at rank 5. Spinning at 3 minions you could last-hit in 2 autos means the E is down for the next trade window and the lane has read your rotation. Save it for champions.
  • Forgetting Q's silence. Q silences for 1.5 seconds. Always Q-engage on a champion mid-cast (Lulu polymorph, Karma shield, Lissandra R) — the silence interrupts the cast.

Advanced tip

Demacian Justice is true damage, so shields are the only thing that stops it: nothing else in the game reduces it. Learn the threshold instead of eyeballing it. At rank 3 the target dies from roughly 26% maximum health plus 204 flat health, so a 2400 HP carry is dead below about 830 HP. Flash-R is the play when they are one dash from safety, not an opener: hold Flash for it.
