Core Abilities

An Acquired Taste
Basic attacks deal bonus damage scaled on bonus Health, so every HP item is also a damage item. Damaging enemy champions stacks Acquired Taste; at 3 stacks Tahm can spit-stun them with Q.
Tongue Lash
Tongue Lash
Linear skillshot that damages and slows the first target, and heals Tahm if it hits a champion. Applies a passive stack; at 3 stacks the target is stunned.
Abyssal Dive
Abyssal Dive
Dive underground and reappear at a target spot, knocking up enemies in the landing area. Gap-closer plus AOE engage tool with a 1.5s telegraph.
Thick Skin
Thick Skin
Passive: stores a percent of damage taken as grey health that heals out of combat. Active: convert stored damage into a temporary shield.
Devour
Devour
Eats one champion for a few seconds. On enemy: deals magic damage and removes them from the fight. On ally: shields them and carries them away from danger.

Why these runes

Resolve primary: Grasp triggers every 4s in melee, chipping HP and stacking permanent bonus health that feeds Tahm's HP-based passive. Demolish cracks a plated turret after a won trade; Bone Plating blunts the first 3 hits; Overgrowth turns minions into permanent HP.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Magical Footwear delivers free boots at minute 12, 45 seconds sooner per takedown (saves 300 gold for an early Heartsteel power spike) and Cosmic Insight cuts summoner spell and item active cooldowns — important because R is your single big save tool.

When to switch secondary

If the enemy team has 2+ hard CC (Leona stun + Maokai root + Lissandra ulti), drop Inspiration and take Precision secondary instead, with Triumph (heal on takedown) and Legend: Alacrity; for tenacity use the third stat shard (15%) or Mercury's Treads.

Win Condition

Stack health, soak damage in lane, then make picks: land Q from fog to slow, walk in, and use R to either remove an enemy carry or save your own from a dive.

Weakness

No real disengage and a slow base move speed — kiters who never let you close gap can poke you to death. R is single-target: if it is on cooldown your team loses its safety net.

Overview

Tahm Kench is a tank (a melee champion built to soak damage rather than deal it) whose entire game plan revolves around one resource: Health. The more of it he stacks from items, the harder his basic attacks hit (his passive An Acquired Taste scales with his bonus Health, so every HP item is also a damage item) and the more grey health he stores on E to convert into a shield. Top lane suits him: a long one-versus-one corridor where Grasp of the Undying keeps banking permanent Health, Tongue Lash (Q) to chip from range, and enough farm to reach the four items his whole plan depends on.

His game plan is patient. In lane, soak harass with E, use Q to poke and pull a minion last hit at the same time, and never blow R as a damage tool — it is a save button. Mid-game, walk into the enemy front line, W in for a knock-up, basic-attack twice to apply Grasp plus a passive stack, then Q for the stack-finisher stun. In teamfights, R is the swing vote: either remove the enemy ADC for 3 seconds, or pull your own carry out of a Malphite ultimate.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Shield Doran's Shield (450g) + 1 Health Potion Health Potion (50g). That is exactly the 500 gold you start with. The bonus health regen against basic attacks keeps you alive through the level 1-3 poke phase before your E is online; buy the Refillable Potion on your first back instead.

Core items (in order):

  1. Heartsteel Heartsteel — first item by default. Stand near an enemy champion for 3 seconds, then land one attack: it deals 70 (+6% max Health) bonus physical damage and gives you back 10% of it as permanent max Health, once per target every 30 seconds. That is roughly 25 permanent Health per proc at 3000 HP, and every point of it also feeds An Acquired Taste.
  2. Sunfire Aegis Sunfire Aegis — AOE burn that keeps ticking while you sit in melee range, letting you waveclear and apply Grasp stacks at the same time. Patch 26.16 put it at 2800 gold (from 2700) and rebuilt the burn around bonus Health (1.5% instead of 1%) against a smaller minion modifier; the crossover is 308 bonus Health, the item alone gives 350, and Heartsteel is already stacking in front of it, so the wave dies faster than before, not slower. It clears and it brawls: solid against bruiser top lanes, and the Health it adds feeds An Acquired Taste.
  3. Warmog's Armor Warmog's Armor — once you carry 2000 bonus Health, 8 seconds without taking damage regenerate 15% of your max Health every 5 seconds. With Heartsteel plus Sunfire plus Warmog's you clear that threshold on completion. Lets Tahm split-push and re-engage waves without recalling.
  4. Frozen Heart Frozen Heart — final teamfight item versus AD comps. Heavy armor, big mana pool for Q spam, and an aura that cuts the attack speed of nearby champions by 20% — direct downgrade on every basic-attack DPS you stand next to.

Situational items:

  • Thornmail Thornmail — versus auto-attack carries (Vayne, Tryndamere, Master Yi). The grievous-wounds debuff (a -40% healing reduction on the enemy) shuts down their lifesteal during the duel.
  • Force of Nature Force of Nature — 400 health and 55 magic resist up front; after eight instances of champion magic damage its Steadfast passive adds another 70 magic resist and 6% move speed at once.
  • Kaenic Rookern Kaenic Rookern — versus single-target AP burst (Syndra, Veigar, Annie). The magic shield from its passive absorbs one full ult-combo before it eats your HP.
  • Randuin's Omen Randuin's Omen — versus crit-heavy compositions (Yasuo + Caitlyn, Tryndamere). Cuts critical strike damage taken by 30%; the active slows nearby enemies by 70% Move Speed for 2 seconds.

Boots: Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps versus heavy basic-attack damage; Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads versus heavy magic damage or two or more hard crowd-control (stuns, roots, suppresses) on the enemy team.

Skill order: Max Q first (poke, slow, and stack tool — your main lane pressure), E second (more stored damage means more shield), W last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Resolve with Grasp of the Undying keystone — every 4 seconds in melee, your next basic attack deals bonus damage based on max HP, heals you, and stacks permanent HP. Demolish lets you crack a plated turret for bonus damage after shoving in a winning trade. Bone Plating absorbs the first 3 hits from a single enemy in a trade. Overgrowth converts minion kills into permanent HP. Secondary Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free boots at minute 12, 45 seconds sooner per takedown, and 10 extra Move Speed over normal boots) and Cosmic Insight (cuts cooldowns on summoner spells and item actives). Stat shards: Adaptive Force, Health Scaling, Health.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions TahmKench beats

  • Auto-attack carry with steroid ult

Tryndamere commits Undying Rage (R) — five seconds where he cannot drop below 1 HP, and his whole trade depends on attacking through it. Devour (R) swallows him mid-Rage — most of that invulnerability burns away inside Tahm, and he comes out with almost none left.

    Tryndamere
  • Auto-attack carry with steroid ult

Master Yi commits Highlander (R) for the movement speed and slow immunity his whole fight depends on. Devour (R) swallows him mid-Highlander and the buff keeps counting down while he is stuck inside Tahm, so he reappears with it nearly spent.

    Master Yi
  • All-in bruiser with short dash combo

Riven's Broken Wings (Q), Valor (E) shield and Ki Burst (W) stun all land as small hits, and Thick Skin (E) banks each one as grey health. Her combo fills Tahm's shield bar for him, and the three-stack Tongue Lash (Q) stun catches her recasting Blade of the Exile (R).

    Riven
  • All-in bruiser with short dash combo

Irelia's Bladesurge (Q) only chains if it keeps killing marked targets, and Defiant Dance (W) roots her in place while it charges. Tongue Lash (Q) lands its slow before Flawless Duet (E) can mark him, and every Bladesurge hit banks more grey health on Thick Skin (E).

    Irelia
  • All-in bruiser with short dash combo

Renekton's Slice and Dice (E) into Ruthless Predator (W) is a short burst gated by his Fury bar. Every hit of it banks grey health on Thick Skin (E), and the three-stack Tongue Lash (Q) stun catches him while Dominus (R) is still refilling that Fury.

    Renekton

Champions that beat TahmKench

  • Ranged top laner with built-in kite

Vayne's Tumble Q dashes her outside Tongue Lash range on every auto, and Silver Bolts W applies true damage every third hit that scales with Tahm's max HP — exactly the stat he stacks.

    Vayne
  • Ranged top laner with built-in kite

Quinn's Vault E dashes off Tahm onto Harrier passive marks, Behind Enemy Lines R lets her side-lane while he is locked in farm, and Blinding Assault Q removes his passive auto-attack chain.

    Quinn
  • Ranged top laner with built-in kite

Kennen's Lightning Rush E phases him through Tahm to apply Mark of the Storm from inside the wave, and Electrical Surge W adds another mark every few attacks plus one on activation, so the third mark stuns Tahm in melee while Kennen Rush-exits.

    Kennen
  • Long-range poker with safe waveclear

Gangplank places Powder Keg E up to 1000 units away and detonates it with Parrrley Q from 625 units behind it, so the AOE chip lands on Tahm without Gangplank ever entering the 900 units of Tongue Lash or the Abyssal Dive landing zone.

    Gangplank
  • Long-range poker with safe waveclear

Jayce's Shock Blast (Q) in Cannon form reaches 1050 units, more than Tongue Lash's 900, and extends to 1600 with 40% more damage through the Acceleration Gate (E). Hammer form (R) then answers Abyssal Dive (W) with Thundering Blow, knocking Tahm back on landing.

    Jayce

Key matchups

  • Darius: Even matchup, edge to you. Tongue Lash out-ranges Decimate (Q), including the outer ring of the axe where it hits hardest. Poke him with Q on cooldown, soak his Q with Bone Plating, then stack passive at 3 for the stun. Avoid trading inside his Hemorrhage stacks (the bleed from his passive); reset by walking out for 3 seconds.
  • Vayne: Lose lane, scale to teamfight. Her Silver Bolts (W) (third hit applies % max-HP true damage) ignore your tank stats. Stand near minions so Tumble (Q) puts her against the wall behind you. Buy Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps + Thornmail Thornmail early; in teamfights one R on her ends it.
  • Fiora: Hard matchup. Her Riposte (W) eats Tongue Lash (Q) and answers with a 25% slow; it only stuns you if you feed it the 3-stack stun version of Q, so never spend the stun cast into her W window. Grand Challenge (R) is what actually kills you: four Vitals of percent-HP true damage walk straight through the HP pool you spent the game stacking. Save Q until her W is on cooldown — track it on the buff bar. Play near tower and ask for jungle help; do not duel her without 2 items.
  • Mordekaiser: Even matchup. Realm of Death (R) isolates you in a 1v1 dimension, but your HP scaling and Q heal usually let you out-sustain him there. Save E active for after Obliterate (Q) lands; the shield from grey health blunts his Death's Grasp pull pressure.
  • Tryndamere: Favorable. Q poke plus Devour mid-Undying Rage (R) trivialises his only outplay button. Swallowing him removes 3 of the 5 seconds of the ult, so he comes out with the last 2 seconds and the Fury the ult granted him: the play is not to cancel it, it is to make him spend it for nothing while your team repositions. Spinning Slash (E) is his only exit afterwards, so hold the wave between him and his tower.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3 (Q + W + E): Full kit minus R. You can W in to engage, basic-attack twice for Grasp + a stack, and Q-stun on 3 stacks. First real all-in (a fight where you intend to score the kill, not just chip HP) window of the game.
  • Level 6 (R unlocked): First Devour. Versus melee top laners, R on them isolates them from the wave for 3 seconds — you can crash a wave and base, or hold flash to follow up jungle gank.
  • Heartsteel Heartsteel completion (~ minute 12-14): Your HP curve breaks open. There is no button to press: standing next to the enemy laner for 3 seconds charges the next attack, which pays out in damage and in permanent Health. Force trades on cooldown — even unfavorable lanes flip here.
  • 3-item online (~ minute 22-26): With Heartsteel Heartsteel + Sunfire Aegis Sunfire Aegis + Warmog's Armor Warmog's Armor, you sit at 4k+ HP and regenerate to full out of combat. Group with team for Baron or Drake fights — your front-line presence wins skirmishes.

Common mistakes

  • Using R on yourself or an ally for "movement." Self-spit R (eating an ally and walking them somewhere) costs you the whole ability for 120 seconds at rank 1, and still 80 at rank 3. Wasting it to reposition by 800 units is a net loss. Save it for either removing the enemy ADC from a fight, or saving a teammate at 5% HP from a dive.
  • Casting E active too early. Thick Skin's shield equals the percent of damage you have stored. Cast it at 0-30% stored damage and you get a tiny shield. Walk into the trade first, let enemies dump 2-3 abilities, then activate E for a near-full shield right as their burst rotation ends.
  • Engaging with W without a follow-up. Abyssal Dive has a 1.5s telegraph (the underground bubble enemies see before you re-emerge). If you W without your jungler nearby or without Q's slow already applied, the enemy walks out before the knock-up lands. Use W only when their flash is down or a slow is on them.
  • Building damage items instead of HP. Tahm Kench's scaling is HP, not AD or AP. A 4k-HP Heartsteel auto-attack hits harder than a 3k-HP Trinity Force one. Resist the urge to "feel impactful" with damage items — your team's carries deal the damage, you deal the lockdown.
  • Picking Tahm Kench blind into ranged tops. "Blind" means locking your champion before seeing the enemy's pick. Tahm has no dash and a slow base move speed. Vayne, Quinn, Kennen, Teemo all kite him out of lane. If draft order forces it, plan around teamfights, not lane wins.

Advanced tip

Bait the Bone Plating timing. Walk forward as if to engage, let the enemy dump their first 2 abilities onto you (Bone Plating absorbs flat damage from each of their first 3 hits in the window), then turn around with Q the moment their burst rotation visibly drops. The enemy expects you to keep walking forward into a trade you would lose; instead you walked out of their best window with most of your HP and their Bone Plating-absorbed cooldowns wasted. Re-approach 6 seconds later with Grasp ready and a stack already on them. This works best versus all-in bruisers (Riven, Renekton, Irelia) whose entire trade pattern lives in their first combo rotation.
