Resolve primary: Aftershock procs (activates) when Ixtal's Impact stuns or Impale suppresses, stacking armor and magic resist for 2.5s when the enemy focuses you. Font of Life heals you and an ally on every CC, Conditioning adds resists past minute 12, Overgrowth scales HP late.
Inspiration secondary: Magical Footwear saves 300g on tier 1 boots so you can rush Hollow Radiance faster, and Cosmic Insight cuts Flash and Smite cooldown — both matter for surprise E + Flash ganks and for objective stealing on Drake and Baron.
Vs an AD-heavy enemy team (3+ basic-attack damage dealers), swap Inspiration to Precision with Triumph (refunds health and gold on takedown) and Legend: Alacrity (attack speed per stack); for tenacity use the third stat shard (15% tenacity and slow resist) or Mercury's Treads.
Win Condition
Charge Ixtal's Impact (E) through a wall to stun a key target, follow with Impale (R) to suppress and drag the back line into your team, then Q + W to chunk max Health through Threads of Vibration stacks.
Weakness
Ixtal's Impact is your only hard engage and has a long cooldown early. Whiff the E and you have no follow-up. Disengage tools and dashes that escape the R window (Yasuo E, Tristana W) break your win condition entirely.
Overview
Skarner is the highest-lockdown tank jungler in the game. His kit revolves around Ixtal's Impact (E), a wall-piercing dash that ends in a stun if you slam an enemy into terrain, and Impale (R), a multi-target suppression that drags up to three champions wherever you walk for the full duration. Threads of Vibration stacks on every hit and detonates for a chunk of max Health — your built-in damage even with a full tank build. Pick him when your team needs someone to drag the back line into the kill zone.
The trade-off: E has a long cooldown at rank 1 (22 seconds) and is your only real gap-closer. Whiff it and you have no plan B. Dashes that escape the R window break your win condition. Game plan: full clear, hit level 6, force a fight every time Impale is up, turn every successful R into a fight your team starts two or three players up.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Mosstomper Seedling (450g) +
1 Health Potion (50g). That is the full 500 gold you start with; the Refillable Potion is a first-back purchase, not a start. Mosstomper Seedling is the melee jungle starter (its companion attacks the monsters you fight, speeding up every camp). The Refillable Potion you pick up on that first back is a healing item that refills for free at base, saving gold on chip damage from camps (the neutral monster groups you farm).
Core items (in order):
Mosstomper Seedling — melee jungle pet starter. It grows on treats, one per large monster plus one on a timer; the first upgrade needs 15 and the final one, the only one that matters here, needs 35. That last evolution consumes the item and leaves Mosstomper's Courage: a 200-360 shield (based on level) that lasts until broken and refreshes after every camp you clear or after 10 seconds out of combat, plus 10% more damage to non-epic monsters and 50% less damage from them. The permanent shield stacks on top of Seismic Bastion (W) at the exact moment you engage.
Hollow Radiance — your most important first full item. Magic damage aura ticks every second on enemies near you, and during Impale (R) your suppressed targets are stuck on you for the whole suppression, which is only about one and a half ticks of the aura. The damage is not the point: the point is that they stand still, inside your auras, while your team walks in. Health and Magic Resist also harden you against AP burst.
Mercury's Treads — default boots for the engage role. Tenacity (a stat that shortens stuns and slows on you) lets you survive the CC chain the enemy throws at you the second you E in. Swap to
Plated Steelcaps vs 2+ AD auto-attack carries (Master Yi, Tryndamere, Caitlyn).
Sunfire Aegis — stacks Immolate burn AOE on top of Hollow Radiance, so a suppressed target eats two damage auras at once during the R drag. Patch 26.16 raised it to 2800 gold (from 2700) and rebuilt the burn around bonus Health (1.5% instead of 1%) against a slightly smaller monster modifier. The crossover against monsters sits near 570 bonus Health, and Hollow Radiance plus Sunfire alone put you at 750, so in this build the aura clears camps faster than it did before, not slower — and it still ticks for the whole time a target is stuck to you during Impale (R). Health and Armor scale your duel survivability past minute 14.
Jak'Sho, The Protean — late-game tank capstone. After 5 seconds of champion combat your bonus Armor and bonus Magic Resist go up by 30% until the fight ends. It rewards staying in the fight, not entering it, which is exactly what a suppression build does: perfect for sitting on top of your carry in long 5v5 teamfights.
Situational items:
Frozen Heart — vs AD auto-attack carries (Master Yi, Tryndamere, Jinx). Big armor block plus an aura that slows attack speed of nearby enemies.
Abyssal Mask — vs 2+ AP enemy champions. Nearby enemy champions take 12% more magic damage, which multiplies both your own Hollow Radiance ticks and every spell your AP teammate lands on the suppressed target.
Thornmail — vs healing-stacking AD comps (Aatrox, Master Yi, an ADC with Soraka). Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts healing received by 40%) auto-applies on hit.
Randuin's Omen — vs crit-based ADCs (Yasuo, Yone, Tryndamere). Active slows nearby enemies by 70% Move Speed for 2 seconds; passive cuts critical strike damage taken by 30%.
Warmog's Armor — after the first 2 items into long siege. Massive HP plus out-of-combat regen lets you E-engage repeatedly without basing.
Boots:
Mercury's Treads default.
Plated Steelcaps vs heavy AD basic-attack teams.
Skill order: Max Q first (lower cooldown, key for clear speed and damage), W second (bigger shield, shorter cooldown), E last (the stun stays 1.1s and the range does not move, so the ranks only buy damage and 1 second of cooldown each). Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Resolve with Aftershock (bonus armor and magic resist for 2.5s when you E-stun or R-suppress), Font of Life (each time you impair an enemy's movement, you and the lowest-health ally nearby heal), Conditioning (extra resists after minute 12), Overgrowth (passive HP per nearby minion killed). Secondary Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free tier-1 boots at minute 12) and Cosmic Insight (lower Flash and Smite cooldowns).
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Skarner beats
Immobile hyper-carry with no dash
The Hitman and the Seer passive locks Aphelios into a Weapon Queue System (E) gun cycle and Phase (W) only swaps weapons — he has no dash to break Impale (R) suppression. Ixtal's Impact (E) wall-stun catches him before Moonlight Vigil (R) can fire.
ApheliosEngage tank reliant on a single telegraphed ult
Unstoppable Force (R) is Malphite's only gap-closer and has a clear travel-time telegraph. Seismic Bastion (W) shield blunts the R knock-up burst, then Impale (R) suppresses Malphite mid-channel of his next engage — Granite Shield passive does not block suppression.
MalphiteLate-game scaling jungler with weak early
Karthus has no escape outside Death Defied passive revive and Wall of Pain (W) only slows. Ixtal's Impact (E) charges through walls to invade his jungle pre-6, catching him before the Defile (E) farm spike, and Impale (R) suppresses through Requiem (R) channel.
KarthusMobile assassin jungler with stealth
Impale (R) suppresses through the Hallucinate (R) clone-swap and ignores Quicksilver Sash. Ixtal's Impact (E) charges through walls to invade Jack In The Box (W) setups, and Seismic Bastion (W) shield absorbs the Deceive (Q) empowered crit at full HP.
ShacoMobile shadow-dash assassin jungler
Impale (R) suppresses through the Living Shadow (W) swap and the Death Mark (R) ghost return — neither dash breaks the suppression effect. Seismic Bastion (W) shield absorbs the Death Mark (R) detonate burst long enough for Threads of Vibration to chain back.
Zed
Champions that beat Skarner
Mobile fighter with windwall
Sweeping Blade (E) dashes through the cast of Ixtal's Impact (E) before the wall collision lands, breaking the engage. Wind Wall (W) blocks projectiles but more importantly the Last Breath (R) knock-up window starts the moment Impale (R) suppression ends.
YasuoDuelist with CC immunity ultimate
Ragnarok (R) makes Olaf immune to disables for the duration, so Impale (R) suppression simply does not stick. Reckless Swing (E) deals true damage that ignores Skarner's tank stats, and Undertow (Q) axe pickup gives perma move-speed chase through Threads of Vibration.
OlafMarksman with self-peel dash
Arcane Shift (E) blinks out of Ixtal's Impact (E) collision before Skarner can slam him into a wall, and Rising Spell Force attack-speed stacks let him keep firing while Impale (R) drags him. Trueshot Barrage (R) finishes Skarner mid-R commit.
EzrealEarly-aggressive jungler with global ult
Duskbringer (Q) gives move-speed on the spectral trail to outrun Ixtal's Impact (E) and invade Skarner's blue side pre-3. Shroud of Darkness (W) spell-shields the Impact stun, and Paranoia (R) global vision dive bypasses any defensive setup.
NocturneSustain duelist jungler with own suppression
Eternal Hunger passive heal-on-hit out-trades Skarner's Threads of Vibration max-HP damage, and Infinite Duress (R) is a suppression on a separate cooldown from Skarner's R. Blood Hunt (W) low-HP detection chases Skarner through his Ixtal's Impact (E) approach.

Key matchups
- Aphelios / Jinx: Your dream pick-into matchups. Both are immobile marksmen with no dash to break Impale (R). Jinx answers with Flame Chompers! (E) on the ground behind her and Zap! (W) to push you off; Aphelios has Binding Eclipse (Gravitum) to root you and Moonlight Vigil (R) to burst, and neither breaks a suppression. Charge Ixtal's Impact (E) from the side bush, chain Impale (R), and drag them to your team — they auto-attack you during the lock, feeding
Hollow Radiance ticks. Keep rushing
Hollow Radiance first: at 2800 gold
Sunfire Aegis is no longer the cheaper aura to open with. - Yasuo / Yone: Problem matchups. Yasuo's Wind Wall (W) blocks the Upheaval boulder throw and the auto-attacks your team needs to convert the suppression; Yone's Spirit Cleave (W) shield blunts your follow-up Q. Save Impale (R) until they have committed their dash (Yasuo E, Yone E).
- Karthus: Race matchup. He clears with Lay Waste (Q) AOE and hits his spike at level 6, and Wall of Pain (W) is the only thing that slows your approach. Invade pre-3 with E through the back wall of his blue or red buff. If he reaches level 6 unpunished, you lose the late game.
- Lee Sin / Elise: Early-aggressive junglers who invade. Sonic Wave (Q) finds you through the wall you were about to charge and Safeguard (W) puts Lee Sin back out of your grab; Elise opens on Cocoon (E). Your level 3 is decent (Q + W + E unlocked) but their level 3 is better. Full clear (kill every camp once) starting opposite their spawn, take scuttle (the river crab that grants vision when killed). Avoid 1v1s pre-6.
- Olaf: Hardest counter. Ragnarok (R) makes him immune to disables while he attacks, so Impale's suppression does not stick during his ult, and Reckless Swing (E) deals true damage straight through your armor stack. Bait his R with a fake E commit (cancel E by pressing it again before the dash commits), then engage. Rush
Frozen Heart after Hollow Radiance.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3: With Q, W, and E unlocked, your first gank threat is real. One E through the wall into a stun under a snowballing (a vantage that grows over time: kill → gold → item → more kill) ally is usually a kill.
- Level 6: First Impale. Tempo spike. Force a fight within 30 seconds of hitting 6 — gank a lane, contest scuttle, or set up the first Drake. A 3-man R on the enemy mid-jungle-support trio at Drake pit is game-defining.
Hollow Radiance completion (~ minute 12-14): Your aura goes from filler stat to real damage threat. Fighting for Drake or Rift Herald with Hollow Radiance ticking on the suppressed target wins the objective before your team commits.- 3-item spike (~ minute 22-26): Mosstomper + Hollow Radiance + Sunfire online. Two stacked AOE auras plus Threads of Vibration means a single R-suppressed target is already bleeding HP before your team even auto-attacks. Force every objective; this is your peak before carries scale past you.
Common mistakes
- Using E in open vision. Ixtal's Impact (E) has a visible wind-up and the enemy hears the cast sound; from open vision every champion with a dash or Flash gets out. Always start E from a fog of war angle (the unseen part of the map outside ally vision) — through a jungle wall, from tri-brush, or from inside a buff camp.
- R-ing the tank instead of the carry. Impale (R) is your single multi-target lockdown tool, a 120-second cooldown at rank 1, down to 90 at rank 3. Suppressing the enemy tank wastes it on a target with high resistances and no damage threat. Always R the ADC or AP carry whose death wins the fight.
- W-ing too early. Seismic Bastion (W) shield lasts only a few seconds. Pressing W before you E in burns the cooldown — the shield expires during your dash. Engage with E first, suppress with R, then W as the enemy team focuses you down.
- Forcing R on one squishy from open ground. Impale rewards multi-target casts. Wasting it on an isolated target gives up the 3-man potential. Wait two seconds for the front line to step up, then R through the cluster.
- Ignoring E as a disengage. Ixtal's Impact (E) is your fastest movement tool and it ignores walls. If you are caught in your own jungle, E the other way through the nearest wall and you are gone — most chase tools cannot follow through terrain.
Advanced tip
Practice the E + Flash trajectory snap on a target dummy. Ixtal's Impact (E) is steerable mid-cast, but you can also press Flash during the dash to instantly relocate without losing the collision grab. A line you see in high-ranked games: charge E from your red buff toward the enemy mid-laner walking up to last-hit, hold the wall-pierce angle, and Flash 90 degrees inward the moment they side-step. The collision still registers because the dash hitbox carries through the Flash, and you slam them into the wall they were retreating toward. Chained into Impale (R) on landing, it is a 5v3 fight starter from full fog of war — the enemy mid never sees the trajectory in time because the visible line of E pointed somewhere else.
