Core Abilities

Runic Blade
Casting an ability charges Riven's blade up to three stacks. Each basic attack consumes one stack to deal bonus physical damage.
Broken Wings
Broken Wings
Three-part dash combo. Each cast is a short forward step that deals damage; the third hit knocks back nearby enemies. Animation-cancel each step with an auto-attack to fire passive procs in between.
Ki Burst
Ki Burst
Short-range AOE stun around Riven (260 range). Main lock-down tool — needs you to be in melee range to land it.
Valor
Valor
Short dash with a shield that absorbs damage for about 1.5 seconds. Doubles as gap-closer, disengage, and animation-cancel for Q steps.
Blade of the Exile
Blade of the Exile
Empowers her sword for ~15 seconds: bonus AD, longer auto-attack range, and access to Wind Slash — a long-range cone finisher that deals more damage the lower the target's HP.

Why these runes

Precision: Conqueror stacks on Q1-AA-Q2-AA-Q3 trades. Triumph refunds HP on takedowns, Legend: Alacrity speeds the autos between Q steps for cleaner animation-cancels, Coup de Grace lines up with Wind Slash below 40% HP.

Why secondary

Resolve secondary: Bone Plating dampens early all-ins from lane bullies (Renekton, Pantheon, Darius), Revitalize amplifies the E shield value and any heal you take from your support items.

When to switch secondary

Vs ranged poke top (Vayne, Quinn, Teemo, Gnar) swap Resolve to Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free boots around minute 12) and Biscuit Delivery (early sustain to survive the harass before you reach Eclipse).

Win Condition

Win the lane through animation-cancelled Q-AA combos and short trades, snowball (turn a small lead into a bigger one) onto side lanes, then close fights with R + Wind Slash on a low-HP carry.

Weakness

No mana, no ranged tools, and a long R cooldown out of ult. Long-range poke and disengage shut you down before W lands; hard CC at the start of an engage cancels Q steps and the E shield.

Overview

Riven is a melee skirmisher (a fighter who wins through repeated short fights instead of one big burst) built around animation-cancelling. Her Broken Wings (Q) is three separate dashes that each can be interrupted by a basic attack or Valor (E) to fire her Runic Blade passive in between. A clean Q-AA-Q-AA-Q-AA combo doubles her damage output compared to spamming the buttons in order. She has no mana, so her ceiling is "how fast can you press buttons cleanly" rather than resource management.

The top lane game plan is short trades, then snowball. Use Q and E for mobility, land Ki Burst (W) to stun (small AOE around her, very short range), and weave auto-attacks between every spell cast to spend passive stacks. After level 6, Blade of the Exile (R) extends her auto-attack range and unlocks Wind Slash — a long-range cone that deals bonus damage to low-HP targets, perfect for finishing a kill on someone running away. Mid-game she splitpushes a side lane (pushes alone to force a response) and turns 1v1s into kills with R uptime.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Blade + 1 Health Potion. Take Doran's Shield only into ranged harass lanes (Kennen, Quinn, Vayne) where you need the regen to reach minute 6.

Core items (in order):

  1. Eclipse Eclipse — your main spike: 60 AD and 15 Ability Haste, and no lethality on it. Two separate ability or auto-attack hits on the same champion within 2 seconds trigger Ever Rising Moon — bonus physical damage worth 8% of their maximum Health plus a 150 (+40% bonus AD) shield. Riven clears that threshold inside a single Q step, so the flat AD and the proc both land on every trade.
  2. Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps — default boots into AD-heavy teams. Buy after Eclipse if the lane is melee or AD ranged.
  3. Black Cleaver Black Cleaver — armor shred stacks on every Q step and auto-attack, amplifying both Riven's damage and her team's follow-up. The 26.16 buff to 45 AD is worth more to Riven than to anyone else, because a clean combo turns AD into damage six or seven separate times in three seconds instead of once. The move-speed burst on dealing damage is untouched for melee champions — 26.16 halved it only for ranged buyers — and it still covers the last step between Q3 and an enemy walking away, without spending E on it. HP and Ability Haste round out the duelist profile.
  4. Sterak's Gage Sterak's Gage — 400 flat health, 20% tenacity, and bonus attack damage worth 50% of your base AD, so it grows with your level and not with your other items. Its Lifeline shield is worth 60% of your bonus health, fires when you would drop below 30% health, decays over 4.5 seconds and comes back every 90 seconds. Buy when you start engaging fights instead of just splitpushing.
  5. Death's Dance Death's Dance — turns physical damage you take into a slow bleed across a few seconds (damage spread over time, not instant). Buy vs teams with two strong physical damage dealers (e.g. Yasuo + Caitlyn): you survive the burst window long enough to Q out and re-engage.

Situational items:

  • Stridebreaker Stridebreaker — alt first item vs kiters and ranged tops (Vayne, Gnar, Kennen). The active is not a dash: it slows every enemy around you by 35% and gives you up to 35% decaying Move Speed per champion hit. You still close the gap with Q and E, but they cannot walk back out of the combo.
  • Maw of Malmortius Maw of Malmortius — vs heavy magic burst (Rumble, Vladimir, Cassiopeia). Lifeline triggers only when magic damage would take you under 30% health, and then adds 10% omnivamp until the fight ends.
  • Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads — vs heavy magic damage or chained crowd control (Lissandra, Malphite, Ryze). Tenacity reduces stun and slow durations.
  • Guardian Angel Guardian Angel — vs a fed AD assassin (Zed, Talon, Kha'Zix). Second life lets you finish the R + Wind Slash combo even if you die mid-engage.
  • Hubris Hubris — vs squishy back lines when you are ahead. Takedown stacks (a bonus that grows after each kill or assist) compound a Riven lead into one-shot range on carries.
  • Ravenous Hydra Ravenous Hydra — when you splitpush (push a side lane alone to force a response). AOE cleave plus life steal makes 1v1s and waveclear trivial.

Boots: Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps is the default. Switch to Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads when the enemy team has 2+ chained CC (crowd-control) sources.

Skill order: Max Q first (higher damage per step; the 13-second cooldown is the same at every rank), E second (shield value and cooldown), W last. R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Coup de Grace. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating and Revitalize. Swap secondary to Inspiration with Magical Footwear and Biscuit Delivery when the lane is heavy ranged poke (Vayne, Quinn, Teemo, Gnar).

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Riven beats

  • Immobile melee juggernaut

Decisive Strike (Q) is a short empowered melee auto, and Judgment (E) has no gap-closer: Garen walks through units while spinning, never faster than you. Valor (E) sidesteps the silence, then Broken Wings (Q) cancel-steps kite him out before the spin lands real damage.

    Garen
  • Stack-scaling late-game juggernaut

Siphoning Strike (Q) is the only stack source and needs an in-melee auto reset, while Wither (W) has a long cooldown. Riven bullies him pre-6 with Broken Wings (Q) cancel combos plus Ki Burst (W) stun, denying farm before Fury of the Sands (R) scaling kicks in.

    Nasus
  • Stack-based bruiser with directional pull

Decimate (Q) outer ring is his only sustain and Apprehend (E) is a skill-shot pull on a long cooldown. Ki Burst (W) stuns at melee to cut the Q windup, and a sideways Valor (E) dodges the pull cone — denying both the heal and the Hemorrhage stack chain.

    Darius
  • Slow melee mage without dash

Obliterate (Q) is a slow ground-target slam with clear telegraph and Death's Grasp (E) is a short pull on a long cooldown. Riven cancels every Q cast with a Valor (E) sidestep, then Q-resets onto him for a Runic Blade proc chain — out-mobilizing him every trade.

    Mordekaiser
  • Pet-summoner top laner with weak early

Yorick trades poorly at levels 2-6 and relies on Eulogy of the Isles (R) to summon the Maiden. Animation-cancelled Broken Wings (Q) plus Ki Burst (W) chunk him before Shepherd of Souls (P) banks four graves, and Valor (E) absorbs the empowered Last Rites (Q) hit with its shield.

    Yorick

Champions that beat Riven

  • Ranged hyper-scaling ADC top

Tumble (Q) is a short dash that resets her auto rhythm from outside Broken Wings (Q) range, Silver Bolts (W) stacks true damage on the third hit, and Condemn (E) knocks Riven back mid all-in step. She kites the Q combo every wave and snowballs into Final Hour (R).

    Vayne
  • Duelist with point-and-click dodge and stun

Counter Strike (E) dodges every auto-attack landed on him for two seconds and stuns nearby enemies at the end — exactly the autos that the Broken Wings (Q) combo needs for Runic Blade procs. If you mistime the bait, Empower (W) plus Leap Strike (Q) reverse the all-in.

    Jax
  • True-damage duelist with parry

Riposte (W) parries the next spell or auto and stuns the caster back — the perfect counter to Ki Burst (W), Riven's only lockdown in lane. Bladework (E) plus Lunge (Q) keep her sticking, and Grand Challenge (R) Vital procs deal percent-HP true damage that ignores armor.

    Fiora
  • Armor tank with point-and-click hard CC

Unstoppable Force (R) is a long-range dash no crowd control can stop; it knocks Riven up mid Broken Wings (Q) and cancels her Blade of the Exile (R) animation. Granite Shield plus Thunderclap (W) armor scaling means her early Q-AA combos chip the shield without breaking it.

    Malphite
  • Ranged AP top with auto-attack denial

Blinding Dart (Q) blinds Riven for 1.5 to 2.5 seconds by rank, deleting the auto-attack procs that her Runic Blade needs between Broken Wings (Q) steps. The combo collapses without the AA cancel windows, and Toxic Shot plus Move Quick (W) kite him outside Q range until R unlocks.

    Teemo

Key matchups

  • Renekton: Lane bully. Stay safe pre-3, dodge his W stun, and last-hit at max range. Trade only after you have W at level 3, and only when his fury bar is empty. After 6 the matchup evens out — your R + Wind Slash chunks him past his W damage reduction window.
  • Darius: Bait his Apprehend (E) with a sideways Valor (E), then commit a Q-AA-W-Q2 trade while his pull is on cooldown. Never let him land his Decimate (Q) outer ring on you — that is his only sustain in lane.
  • Vayne: Hard counter unless she misplays. She kites (moves backward while attacking, keeping distance) your Broken Wings (Q) with Tumble (Q) and chews your HP with Silver Bolts (W). Start Doran's Shield, freeze the wave near tower (hold the wave still close to your turret so she can't last-hit safely), and call for jungle ganks before level 6.
  • Jax: Roughly even, leans his way at 6. His Counter Strike (E) dodges every auto-attack in your Q combo and stuns at the end. Bait it by walking up without committing Q, wait for the dodge window to close, then all-in.
  • Camille: Skill matchup. Her Hookshot (E) stuns through your dash; save Valor (E) to dodge the second jump, not the wall attach. Whoever lands their setup CC first wins the trade.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3: All three basic abilities online. You can land Q1 — AA — E — Q2 — AA — W — AA — Q3 for a full passive-stacking trade. Look for this trade the second the enemy walks up to last-hit.
  • Level 6: Blade of the Exile (R) unlocks an all-in window (full kill commit). The bonus AD plus extended auto range carry into a Wind Slash finisher if the target survives the initial burst.
  • Eclipse completion (~ minute 10-12): Damage per Q step jumps on the flat 60 AD and on Ever Rising Moon, which your Q1-AA-Q2 chain triggers inside its 2-second window every single trade. There is no lethality on the item: what buys you the wave control is the raw AD and the shield you walk away with. Wave control flips: you can shove and roam with the wave on the enemy's side, looking for picks on side lanes.
  • 3 items (Sterak's online, ~ minute 24-28): You become a teamfight skirmisher: dive the back line (the squishy carries standing behind their tanks) through Q resets and E mobility, survive their burst with Sterak's shield + E timing, and clean up with R + Wind Slash. With a 45 AD Black Cleaver Black Cleaver underneath, the bruiser standing between you and that back line stops being a wall and starts being the target that feeds your shred stacks.

Common mistakes

  • Spamming Q without auto-attacks in between. Each Q step charges your Runic Blade passive — but the bonus damage only fires on a basic attack. Q-Q-Q with no auto cancels in between throws away two-thirds of your damage. Always weave an AA between each Q cast.
  • Using R early for the stats. R is your snowball tool and the ability that decides fights through Wind Slash, and it costs you 120 seconds at rank 1, 90 at rank 2, 60 at rank 3. Burning it for waveclear or a small skirmish leaves you a beefy auto-attacker for the next two minutes. Save R for kill commits.
  • Casting W at max distance. Ki Burst is a 260-range AOE around Riven — short. Players new to the champ press W expecting a Q-range stun and miss every trade. Q-step in first, then W to stun, never W from outside Q range.
  • Engaging into a parry. Fiora's Riposte (W) and Sivir's Spell Shield (E) eat your Ki Burst stun for free: bait them by faking a step with E, then commit. Pantheon's Aegis Assault (E) is a different problem: it blocks damage from the front, not crowd control, so W still stuns him and breaks the channel. Against him you want to W, not to wait.
  • Splitpushing pre-R availability. You are the splitpusher of the team only when R is up. Without R you cannot 1v1 a coordinated answer; if R is on cooldown, group with allies for objectives until it comes back.

Advanced tip

Practice the R-cancel Wind Slash combo: cast Blade of the Exile (R) to activate the empowered window, finish your Q-AA-W combo on a target, then release Wind Slash the moment they drop below 40% HP. Wind Slash damage scales inversely with target HP — it grows by up to 200% as their health drops, so at 25% HP it deals two and a half times its floor — and the cone reaches far past your normal auto range. The key trick: you can buffer Wind Slash during an animation by holding the keybind, so it fires the frame your next auto ends. This nets you ~100 extra effective range on the finisher and turns most flee attempts into a kill.
