Precision with Conqueror ramps up bonus AD as Zaahen sticks in Q-W-E rotations; Triumph heals on takedowns to stack with Cultivation of War's revive window, Alacrity speeds the Q follow-up auto, Last Stand pays out under R sustain at low HP.
Resolve secondary: Second Wind regens HP after poke (critical for a melee diver with no ranged trade), Revitalize boosts Q's self-heal and R's damage-to-healing conversion.
Versus a quiet, scaling lane swap Resolve to Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free base boots at minute 12) and Cosmic Insight (18 summoner spell haste, 10 item haste, so Flash and TP come back sooner, but no ability haste).
Win Condition
Use W to pull and lock the target, E to close the final gap, then chain Q1 + Q2 (the knock-up recast) to finish. After the first item, take over the side lanes, R's healing keeps you fighting without going back.
Weakness
Skill-shot W and short-range R mean Zaahen must commit to enter melee. Long-range pokers, true-damage duelists, and point-and-click hard CC shut down his all-in before Q recast lands.
Overview
Zaahen is a melee Darkin fighter (a corrupted ancient warrior bound to a weapon — in his case, a glaive) built around stacking his passive Determination and chaining a four-ability combo into a target. The kit is short to learn: an empowered auto with a recast knock-up (Q), an 850-range pull (W), a dash plus AOE slice (E), and a self-healing slam (R). He is a fighter / skirmisher (mixes damage and durability in 1v1 and 2v2 fights, and needs a team-mate's engage to matter in a 5v5), not a pure assassin: he wants extended trades where Q's heal and R's conversion can refill his HP.
In lane, wait for the enemy to step forward, hit W through a minion to pull them out of position, follow with E to close the gap, then land Q1 (the double slash) and recast Q2 (the knock-up) for the all-in. Mid-game on, look for side-lane 1v1s — Zaahen is one of the strongest duelists with R available. The passive revive on full Determination also turns risky dives into trades you can survive.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Doran's Shield +
Health Potion. The HP-regen passive on Doran's Shield carries Zaahen through the first few levels before his Q heal scales up.
Core items (in order):
Eclipse: first-item spike. 60 attack damage and 15 ability haste for 2900 gold, and no sustain of its own; the omnivamp it used to carry was removed in patch 14.1, so your healing in lane comes from Q and R only. Ever Rising Moon triggers when you hit a champion with two separate attacks or abilities within 2 seconds, which Q1 and Q2 do by design, and pays out as max-health damage plus a 2-second shield.
Plated Steelcaps — default boots when the enemy hurts you mostly with basic attacks. They cut that damage in extended trades (back-and-forth exchanges in lane).
Black Cleaver — every Q hit adds a stack that shaves the enemy's armor (the stat that reduces physical damage). It carries 45 attack damage since 26.16, up from 40, and adds HP and ability haste for more Q recasts per fight.
Sterak's Gage — HP plus a lifeline shield: when your health drops below ~30%, an automatic shield triggers. That window is exactly when Grim Deliverance (R) heal-on-damage refills you to full.
Situational items:
Mercury's Treads — swap from
Plated Steelcaps when the enemy team has heavy magic damage or chained CC (crowd control: stuns, roots, knock-ups — anything that locks you down so you cannot act).
Maw of Malmortius — versus heavy AP burst (AP = ability power, the stat behind magic damage; burst = high damage delivered in 1-2 seconds). The Lifeline passive turns the magic damage that would drop you below 30% health into a shield for 3 seconds plus 10% omnivamp, often the difference between dying mid-engage and surviving long enough to cast R.
Death's Dance — versus burst of either type, physical or magic (Ignore Pain defers 30% of both on a melee champion) (e.g. Yasuo + Caitlyn). It turns burst into a slow bleed (damage spread over the next few seconds instead of landing all at once), giving Q and R healing time to refill HP.
Edge of Night — versus single-target hard CC that one-shots your engage (Morgana Q, Blitzcrank hook, Lissandra R). It carries a spell shield that nullifies the next enemy ability. It is not one-shot: it comes back on a 40-second timer that restarts every time a champion damages you, so in a long side-lane fight you can get two out of it.
Serylda's Grudge — versus enemies stacking armor (tanks like Malphite, Ornn). The armor penetration keeps Q damage relevant deep into the late game; Bitter Cold only slows targets already below 50% health, so treat it as a finisher, not as engage.
Boots:
Plated Steelcaps is the default. Switch to
Mercury's Treads when the enemy team has three or more sources of CC or heavy magic damage.
Skill order: Max Q first (it is your main damage and heal), E second (lower cooldown means more dashes per fight), W last. Leaving W last costs less than it used to: its cooldown starts at 14 seconds at rank 1 (down from 16) and only reaches 12 at rank 5, so a single point already buys you almost the full uptime. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Runes are passive effects you choose pre-game. Zaahen uses Precision primary with the keystone Conqueror — ramps your damage as you keep fighting — plus Triumph (heal on takedowns), Legend: Alacrity (attack speed for faster Q follow-up autos), and Last Stand (more damage at low HP). Secondary: Resolve with Second Wind + Revitalize for sustain. Versus quiet, scaling lanes swap secondary to Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free boots at min 12) and Cosmic Insight (18 summoner spell haste, 10 item haste, no ability haste).
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Zaahen beats
Immobile melee bruiser without dash
Aureate Rush E closes the gap on demand and Dreaded Return W pulls Nasus out of point-blank Siphoning Strike Q range. Wither W slow is point-and-click but does not stop the E dash, and Spirit Fire E zone deals only sustained low damage Zaahen heals through Q.
NasusImmobile melee bruiser without dash
Aureate Rush E closes the gap on demand and Dreaded Return W pulls Garen out of point-blank Decisive Strike Q range. Garen has no dash to dodge the Q1 plus Q2 knock-up recast, and Judgment E spin can be kited by Zaahen between dash cycles.
GarenImmobile melee bruiser without dash
Aureate Rush E closes the gap on demand and Dreaded Return W pulls Mordekaiser out of Death's Grasp E pull range. Indestructible W shield breaks fast under Zaahen's empowered Q double-slash, and Obliterate Q wind-up is dodged by the W pull repositioning.
MordekaiserShort-range mage without a dash
Vladimir must step into melee for Transfusion Q full damage and Tides of Blood E stacks. Dreaded Return W pulls him mid-cast into Q1 plus Q2 knock-up. Sanguine Pool W costs current Health and sits on a 28-second cooldown at rank 1, maxed last, so once burned he has no escape.
VladimirShort-range mage without a dash
Ryze pokes at 1000 with Overload Q, but needs Spell Flux E at 615 to spread it, the range where Dreaded Return W reaches him. Pull him mid-cast into Q1 plus Q2 knock-up before he disengages with Realm Warp R; Rune Prison W is too short to peel Zaahen mid-dash.
Ryze
Champions that beat Zaahen
True-damage duelist with parry or reset
Riposte W parries the Q2 knock-up recast and stuns Zaahen for 2s during the all-in window; parried on Q1 alone it is a 25% slow instead. Duelist's Dance vital procs shred his drain build with true damage, and Grand Challenge R sustains Fiora through Grim Deliverance heal.
FioraTrue-damage duelist with parry or reset
Hookshot E is a long-range terrain dash that repositions Camille out of the Dreaded Return W pull line before it lands. Precision Protocol Q true damage on the second hit shreds Zaahen's drain pool, and The Hextech Ultimatum R isolates him from his team.
CamilleLong-range or blind-based kiter
Vault (E) knocks Zaahen back out of Aureate Rush (E) follow-up range, so he has no way to stick once she kites. Blinding Assault (Q) blanks The Darkin Glaive (Q) empowered auto mid-windup, and Behind Enemy Lines (R) gives Quinn the map speed to leave the lane entirely.
QuinnLong-range or blind-based kiter
Blinding Dart Q cancels The Darkin Glaive Q empowered auto mid-windup, denying Zaahen's main damage and heal pattern. Toxic Shot E ticks damage on every auto that connects, and Noxious Trap R mushrooms zone the dash approach making Aureate Rush risky.
TeemoHard-CC tank with point-and-click lockdown
Unstoppable Force R interrupts Aureate Rush E mid-dash and stuns Zaahen out of the Q recast window. Granite Shield passive plus armor stack neutralize the Q1 plus Q2 burst, and Ground Slam E attack speed slow disables Cultivation of War passive stacking.
Malphite
Key matchups
- Darius: Skill matchup (the player who plays better wins). Stay outside the range of his E pull when his bleed has three or more stacks on you (his passive shaves your HP per second per stack). Use Aureate Rush (E) to disengage after a short trade, not to engage. After 6, R heals you back faster than his Noxian Guillotine can finish you.
- Garen: Easy matchup. Garen has no dash and no ranged ability. Use W from behind your minion wave to pull him off-position, then chain E + Q1 + Q2. With Dreaded Return (W) back every 14 seconds at rank 1 you can afford to whiff one, so wait until his Decisive Strike (Q) is on cooldown before stepping up. Do not commit your combo while his Courage (W) damage reduction is up: wait for it to drop before you spend Q2.
- Vladimir: Strong for Zaahen pre-6. Aureate Rush (E) closes the gap before he can Pool (W); pull him out of Pool's landing zone with a follow-up W. Buy
Executioner's Calling early for Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts healing by 40%) against his sustain. - Fiora: Hardest matchup. Her Riposte (W) parries the Q knock-up recast and her vitals (marks she autos for true damage — damage that ignores armor and MR) bypass your drain build. Bait the parry with a fake Q1 + E cancel before committing the recast. Push the wave and roam (leave lane to help mid) for picks instead of forcing the 1v1.
- Malphite: Hard matchup. Avoid standing on top of your minion wave — his Q is long-range poke (low-cost ranged damage to chip your HP) that hits you for free. Freeze the wave near your tower (keep the wave on your side) to deny him farm. After item 1, his Unstoppable Force (R) interrupts your Aureate Rush (E) — never E into him without Flash up.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2: With Q + E unlocked, Zaahen has his first all-in window (a window where you can fully commit, with no fallback). E + Q1 + Q2 deals enough to chunk most squishies (champions with low durability) to half HP. At level 3 the W pull joins the chain and comes back every 14 seconds at rank 1, so a missed Dreaded Return no longer costs you the whole wave.
- Level 6: Your first R unlocks. Grim Deliverance heals for a chunk of the damage you deal in its AOE — this is the moment Zaahen turns a 50/50 trade into a kill.
Eclipse completion (~ minute 11-13): Your damage spikes hard. Force side-lane duels and look to dive lanes with your jungler — the player who farms the jungle camps and rotates to lanes — through tower shots.- Two items + R online (~ minute 18-22): Peak teamfight window. The
Sterak's Gage lifeline shield plus Grim Deliverance's heal-on-damage let you dive the enemy backline (the squishy carries who stand behind their own tanks) and survive the focus fire.
Common mistakes
- Recasting Q2 too early. Q1 must hit first, otherwise Q2's knock-up does not fire on a clean target. Walk up with W ready, land W, then Q1, then recast Q2 the moment the second slash animates. If you mash the recast key, you lose the knock-up.
- Burning E for movement instead of kill setup. Aureate Rush (E) is your closer. Save it to dash onto a target already locked by W, not to cross the wave faster. A wasted E means no follow-up on the next W pull.
- Pressing R on cooldown. Grim Deliverance has a long cooldown and the rise animation takes a beat. Save R for committed all-ins where you need healing back. Casting R from full HP on a target you were already killing wastes the conversion.
- Ignoring the passive bar. Cultivation of War's full-stack buff and revive are huge. If you are one auto away from filling it, take that auto before tower-diving — the revive saves you if the dive goes wrong.
- Stacking armor over haste/AD. Zaahen is a skirmisher, not a tank. He survives by healing damage back through Q and R; that healing scales with the damage you deal. Tank-HP-only items kill both output and sustain.
Advanced tip
Use Aureate Rush (E) to cancel the Q1 wind-up animation mid-cast. Start Q1 facing one direction, then dash with E through a minion or behind the enemy so the slash lands at a different angle. This E-into-Q1 cancel turns predictable approaches into reads the enemy cannot pre-dodge. Practice it in custom on a target dummy: queue Q1, hold the cast for a tick, dash with E, watch the Q resolve at the new position. In real games, the highest-impact use is dashing into a Fiora who side-stepped a telegraphed Q, then catching her on the rebound before her Riposte (W) is back up.
