Conqueror stacks fast in long top trades: every Q, every W cleave, every auto and every spirit hit during Soul Unbound ticks it. Triumph refunds HP on takedown for the splitpush 1v1, Legend: Bloodline scales lifesteal, Coup de Grace adds 8% under 40% HP after Fate Sealed.
Bone Plating absorbs the first 3 hits of the bruiser trade — the window between Q1 and the Q2 tornado dash. Unflinching gives 10 armor and magic resist while you are crowd controlled and for 2s after, blunting point-and-click stuns (Fiora W, Jax E, Malphite R).
Against ranged tops (Vayne, Gnar, Quinn), swap Resolve → Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free boots minute 12, 300g toward Shieldbow) + Biscuit Delivery (3 lane biscuits restoring HP/mana for poke survival).
Win Condition
Survive the early lane, reach Immortal Shieldbow, then splitpush a side lane for a 1v1. Land Mortal Steel knock-up, replay damage with Soul Unbound, finish with Fate Sealed when enemy TPs in.
Weakness
Counter-attack abilities (Fiora Riposte parry, Jax Counter Strike) eat your Q tornado and reset the trade. Ranged top poke (Vayne, Gnar, Quinn) shoves you under tower before you reach melee range.
Overview
Yone plays top lane as a hybrid duelist: stack two Mortal Steel (Q) charges for a tornado knock-up (a hit that lifts the target into the air, briefly stunning them), use Soul Unbound (E) to commit-and-retreat in the same animation, and finish with Fate Sealed (R) when the enemy lacks an escape. The trade-off is real: his kill threat lives in a 3-4 second commit, and the top lane is full of bruisers with point-and-click counter-attacks (Fiora Riposte, Jax Counter Strike) that eat that window.
His game plan is to survive the early lane, reach Immortal Shieldbow + Berserker's Greaves, and then splitpush a side lane to force a 1v1 (pushing alone in a side lane to force the enemy to respond). Skill expression sits in two places: choosing which trade to commit to (a Q1 short trade is "safe", a Q2 + E commit is "all-in" — full-commit kill attempt without disengage) and reading the enemy Teleport timer so you know whether the splitpush is a free duel or a 1v3 ambush.
Recommended Build
Starting items: Doran's Blade + 1 Health Potion. The Doran's gives 2.5% omnivamp (a small heal on all damage dealt) and AD, which scales with the AD-stacking crit build. Against ranged tops (Quinn, Vayne, Gnar), swap to Doran's Shield: 110 health and the regen Enduring Focus turns on for 8 seconds every time they poke you, which is what carries the ranged lane to your first back.
Core items (in order):
Immortal Shieldbow — first-item default. 25% crit chance, 55 AD, and an HP-threshold passive (a shield that triggers when you drop below 30% HP). It carries no lifesteal — that comes from Bloodthirster. Combined with the Spirit Cleave shield you get two layered shields per fight — the main reason Yone wins splitpush 1v1s against bruisers who out-damage him on paper.
Berserker's Greaves — attack speed boots, 30% since Patch 26.16, up from 25%. Spirit Cleave (W) scales both its cooldown (14 seconds down to 6) and its cast time (0.5 down to 0.19) on bonus attack speed, so the boots buy shield uptime on top of the damage — which is why they come before the W max, not after it.
Infinity Edge — your biggest damage spike. With Way of the Hunter (which doubles crit chance from every other source), Shieldbow + IE puts you at exactly the 100% crit cap: 25% and 25%, doubled. Yone's crits are still damped, but only slightly — Patch 26.17 cut the penalty from -10% to -5%, so they land at 95% of a normal crit instead of 90%. With Infinity Edge's bonus crit damage on top, a crit now lands for 218.5% of your attack damage instead of 207%.
Bloodthirster — pure AD, big lifesteal, and an overheal shield. Past three items you cannot stack more crit chance (you are at the cap), so the build pivots into raw AD scaling — exactly what carries a top-lane splitpush.
Situational items:
Trinity Force — first-item swap when you are ahead in lane and want sticky splitpush pressure: Quicken grants 20 Move Speed for 2 seconds on every attack, so you stay on top of a target walking away. It no longer carries a slow. 36 AD, 30% attack speed, 333 health, 15 ability haste and a Spellblade proc (a bonus burst of damage on the auto right after a spell cast) on Q make the side-lane 1v1 reliable, but you sacrifice the safety-net shield of Shieldbow.
Mortal Reminder — against heavy healing tops (Aatrox, Dr. Mundo, Fiora with Bloodletter's). Applies Grievous Wounds (cuts healing on the target) for a few seconds whenever you damage them. Buy fourth or fifth, swap with Bloodthirster.
Guardian Angel — against assassin focus or all-in dive comps (Camille, Pantheon dive teams). The revive gives you a free reset to W-shield and Q-tornado the team that just used everything on you.
Maw of Malmortius — against heavy AP tops (Vladimir, Kennen, Rumble). Magic shield + lifesteal under low HP keep you alive long enough to land R and crit them down.
Boots: Berserker's Greaves by default: swapping to anything else now gives up 30% attack speed. Mercury's Treads against 3+ targeted stuns and roots; note the 30% tenacity does nothing against knock-ups or suppression, so a Malphite R or a Skarner R is not a reason to buy them.
Skill order: Max Q first (main DPS plus the tornado is your only solo knock-up), W second in top lane (max W gives a bigger Spirit Cleave shield in extended bruiser trades — different from mid, which maxes E for more spirit-form windows), E last. Point in R at 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Bloodline, Coup de Grace. Conqueror stacks fastest on Yone because every Q, W cleave, auto-attack, and the spirit hits during Soul Unbound tick it — exactly what you want in long top-lane trades. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating and Unflinching for survivability. Lethal Tempo is the alternative keystone for an attack-speed-focused playstyle and even faster W cooldowns — pick Conqueror against tankier teams, Lethal Tempo into squishy split-pushers.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Yone beats
Immobile melee bruiser without disengage
Spirit Cleave W shield plus Soul Unbound E spirit return both outlast Tryndamere's Undying Rage R timer, and Mortal Steel Q knock-up cancels Spinning Slash E mid-trade. Bloodlust Q heals are not enough to outpace Way of the Hunter passive crit chance scaling.
TryndamereImmobile melee bruiser without disengage
Spirit Cleave W shield plus Soul Unbound E spirit return outlast Garen's burst window. Garen has no mobility to escape Fate Sealed R, which yanks him out of Judgment E range, and Decisive Strike Q silence cannot interrupt Yone mid Soul Unbound dash.
GarenStack-dependent juggernaut with weak mobility
Mortal Steel Q plus Soul Unbound E out-trades Nasus before his Siphoning Strike Q stacks scale. Wither W slow is point-and-click but does not stop Soul Unbound E spirit dash, and Fury of the Sands R cannot peel Yone's Fate Sealed R pull in skirmish.
NasusStack-dependent juggernaut with weak mobility
Apprehend E pull is short-range and Soul Unbound E dashes out of the outer-edge bonus damage cone of Decimate Q before the slow connects. Hemorrhage stacks need sustained autos to scale, but Spirit Cleave W shield resets the trade health pool fast.
DariusImmobile mage without a dash
Soul Unbound E makes Yone's body untargetable for the dash duration, so Lay Waste Q rings and Defile E ticks hit empty space if he uses E to leave. Karthus has no dash to escape the Mortal Steel Q tornado that follows, and Death Defied passive cannot kite Yone's chase.
Karthus
Champions that beat Yone
Duelist with point-and-click counter-attack
Riposte W parries Mortal Steel Q tornado knock-up and stuns Yone back, since the tornado is an immobilising effect, killing his only CC tool in the 1v1. Duelist's Dance vital procs heal Fiora through Spirit Cleave shield damage, and Grand Challenge R sustains the all-in.
FioraDuelist with point-and-click counter-attack
Counter Strike E dodges Q autos and tornado wind-up during the channel and stuns Yone on cast, killing his only CC tool in the 1v1. Empower W bonus damage on the next auto bursts through Shieldbow, and Leap Strike Q closes Soul Unbound E spirit gap.
JaxTank with AOE crowd-control ultimate
Unstoppable Force R is an AOE knock-up Soul Unbound does not dodge, the body left behind cannot be touched, but the spirit you are steering is a normal targetable unit, so the charge lands on it. Granite Shield passive plus armor stack neutralize tornado burst.
MalphiteTank with AOE crowd-control ultimate
Call of the Forge God R is an AOE knock-up Soul Unbound does not dodge, the body left behind cannot be touched, but the spirit you are steering is a normal targetable unit, so the ram lands on it. Searing Charge E only knocks you up if Ornn slams into terrain, so hug open ground.
OrnnEarly-level all-in bruiser
Shield Vault W stuns through Mortal Steel Q wind-up at level 2, locking Yone out of his tornado setup. Comet Spear Q empowered line throw bursts Yone's HP before level 6 and Immortal Shieldbow, and Aegis Assault E blocks the auto-attack damage Yone needs.

Key matchups
- Darius: Skill matchup. Avoid the outer edge of his Decimate (Q) where the slow connects — his only setup for Apprehend (E) pull. Use Soul Unbound to dash out the moment he commits Noxian Guillotine (R): the body left behind cannot be touched, but the spirit you are steering is a normal target, so R still finds you if it catches the spirit before E ends. Buy
Bloodthirster earlier than usual to out-heal his bleed. - Fiora: Hard counter. Her Riposte (W) parries the Mortal Steel (Q) tornado knock-up and, because the tornado is an immobilising effect, the parry stuns you back. Never commit Q2 into a Fiora with W up — she will parry it and burst your remaining HP with Lunge (Q) + auto-attacks. Save your tornado for after her Riposte is on cooldown: 24 seconds at rank 1, dropping to 16 at rank 5.
- Sett: Skill matchup. Facebreaker (E) catches your spirit while you are out, and the stun only fires if he pulls targets from both sides. Use E during his The Show Stopper (R) cast: the grab is a targeted pick, so it lands on the spirit, and you come back with the W shield up. Buy
Mortal Reminder against his lifesteal stack. - Tryndamere: Favourable. Spirit Cleave (W) shield + Soul Unbound (E) spirit return both outlast his Undying Rage (R) timer. Force the all-in at 6 — he has no escape and Fate Sealed (R) pulls him out of Spinning Slash (E) retreat range.
- Jax: Hard counter. Counter Strike (E) dodges Mortal Steel (Q) + auto-attacks during the channel and stuns you on cast. Never trade in Jax's E window. Wait for him to use E first (17s cooldown at rank 1), then commit your full combo.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2: With Q + E you can E-dash through a minion and Q1 for a fast trade. Step back before they can return — at level 2 you have no Q2 tornado yet, no reset.
- Level 6: Fate Sealed (R) unlocks. Use Teleport to roam mid or bot side if your jungler signals an objective — R turns a 4v4 into a 4v3 by picking off whoever steps out alone (killing an isolated enemy outside a teamfight).
Immortal Shieldbow completion (~ minute 12-14): Lane flips. The HP-threshold shield (the passive that triggers when you drop low) + Spirit Cleave shield gives you two layered shields per fight for all-ins that would have killed you before. Splitpush starts here.
Infinity Edge online (~ minute 22-26): You hit the crit cap; auto-attacks delete most squishies in 2-3 hits. Force objective fights or keep splitting — the enemy must commit 2+ to stop you, opening your team for the opposite-side play.
Common mistakes
- Committing Q2 into a Fiora or Jax with W/E up. Riposte parries the tornado knock-up and stuns you back (a parry only stuns when it catches an immobilising effect, which the tornado is); Counter Strike dodges every auto-attack during the channel and stuns on cast. Always wait for those abilities to be on cooldown before you commit the tornado.
- Stacking crit chance past Infinity Edge. Yone's passive doubles crit chance from items (the "crit cap" — once you hit 100% effective crit, more crit chance is wasted gold). After Shieldbow + IE you are at exactly 100%; the build pivots into raw AD and utility: Bloodthirster for lifesteal, and Mortal Reminder when you need the 40% Grievous Wounds and 30% armor penetration, accepting that its 25% crit chance is dead weight once you are already capped.
- Splitpushing without watching enemy Teleport. Top splitpush is a 1v1 only if the enemy mid/bot is busy. If their Teleport (TP) is up, a side wave shove is a 1v3 invitation. Ping for vision before committing more than 2 waves into the enemy turret.
- Wasting R on a single target. Fate Sealed pulls every enemy caught in the line, so its value scales with how many you hit. Spending it on a lone splitpusher burns a cooldown of well over a minute for a single target. Wait for grouped fights, or use R to engage 2+ enemies from a side angle.
- Not punishing return-cooldowns. After your enemy uses their main escape (Camille E hookshot, Aatrox Q3 displacement, Riven E shield), you have a 10-15 second window where they have no mobility or defensive layer. That is the only window where Yone wins the 1v1 — recognize it and commit instead of trading patiently.
Advanced tip
Practice the E-into-fight, snap-back-out pattern for splitpush 1v1s. Cast Soul Unbound to dash forward through a minion onto the duelist, throw Q-stack + W cleave, then let E expire so the spirit snaps back to your body — which stayed safely behind the minion wave. Most opponents commit their burst expecting Yone to be there when E ends; when he is 600 units back, their cooldowns are wasted. Pair with
Guardian Angel late game and you become almost impossible to lock down in a side-lane skirmish.
