Core Abilities

Stone Skin
Wukong gains stacking armor and max health regeneration while fighting champions and monsters. Lane sustain (the way you heal back HP) comes from this passive, not from items.
Crushing Blow
Crushing Blow
Empower your next attack to gain bonus range, deal bonus damage, and shred the target's armor for a few seconds. Reset basic attack — weave between two normal autos.
Warrior Trickster
Warrior Trickster
Become invisible and dash a short distance, leaving a clone behind that attacks nearby enemies. It is both a gap-closer and an escape, and the clone doubles as a decoy that baits enemy abilities.
Nimbus Strike
Nimbus Strike
Targeted dash onto an enemy that sends out clones to strike everyone nearby. Your only reliable gap-closer, and it grants an attack speed buff once the dash lands.
Cyclone
Cyclone
Extend the staff and spin for 2s, gaining move speed. Each enemy caught is knocked up once for 0.6s, and the spin can be recast after 0.5s. AOE knock-up teamfight ultimate.

Why these runes

Conqueror stacks across the E-Q-AA pattern and the R multi-hit: in a 5v5 you reach 12 stacks for damage plus 8% healing. Triumph pays on champion takedowns, Alacrity speeds Crushing Blow weaves, Last Stand pays when you dive low after the W bait.

Why secondary

Resolve secondary: Bone Plating absorbs the first burst trade when an enemy top laner walks up to punish your minion farming, Revitalize amplifies the Sterak's Gage shield value so the shield procs under heavier burst.

When to switch secondary

Into a poke-heavy enemy top (Teemo, Quinn, Kennen, Jayce) swap Resolve to Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free boots at minute 12 to save gold) and Biscuit Delivery (free pots in lane so the poke does not push you to base prematurely).

Win Condition

Survive lane phase by trading on Crushing Blow cooldown, then look for splitpush pressure or 5v5 setups around dragon: R into 2+ grouped enemies is a game-winning multi-knock-up.

Weakness

No hard CC outside R. Against ranged tops who can poke from outside Nimbus Strike range, you arrive at minute 14 already 30% HP down. Pre-6 you have no all-in window.

Overview

Wukong is a melee fighter / diver — meaning he closes the gap with a short dash and commits to a fight to lock down the high-damage targets — built around one signature moment: his R Cyclone. He spins his staff, knocks up everyone he passes through, and his team converts. In top lane, the kit is straightforward: E to dash onto the enemy laner, Q to weave an empowered armor-shred auto, W to disengage and reset positioning when the trade is over. He is one of the easier top laners to learn (difficulty 2/5 on our scale) because the combo always looks the same: E-Q-AA, then W out if the enemy answers.

His game plan in lane is to trade on every Crushing Blow cooldown against immobile melee enemies, farm safely against ranged poke matchups, and look for R windows around the river — drake fights are where Wukong wins games. Skill expression is in W timing (the clone is a bait target: drop it where the enemy is about to commit, not before) and in deciding when to splitpush (push a side lane alone to force the enemy to send a defender) versus when to teleport to a 5v5 the moment R is up.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Blade Doran's Blade + Health Potion Health Potion. Against ranged top lanes (Teemo, Quinn, Kennen) swap to Doran's Shield Doran's Shield to survive the poke phase.

Core items (in order):

  1. Black Cleaver Black Cleaver — first big item: 3000 gold for 45 attack damage, 400 HP and 20 ability haste. In a lane where you trade on Q cooldown, the haste is worth as much as the damage. Carve adds 6% armor off per hit up to five stacks on top of Crushing Blow's debuff, which breaks a top laner who answered you by buying plate.
  2. Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps — default boots into most enemy teams. Swap to Mercury's Treads if the enemy comp has 3+ stuns/roots or two AP threats.
  3. Sundered Sky Sundered Sky — 3100 gold for 40 attack damage. Only one of the two recent passes was a plain nerf: 26.16 cut the healing while raising the health and removing a component from the recipe, and 26.17 took that health back plus 5 attack damage. The upshot is 5 AD less than Black Cleaver for 100 gold more, which is why it is no longer the opener. It is still the right third item: Crushing Blow resets your auto-attack, so you decide when the crit lands and where the heal goes.
  4. Sterak's Gage Sterak's Gage — late-game spike. The HP shield procs (auto-triggers) under burst (high damage in 1-2 seconds) and the tenacity passive shortens crowd control so Cyclone does not get interrupted halfway through.
  5. Jak'Sho, The Protean Jak'Sho, The Protean — late-game tank spike. The stacking armor and magic resist passive turns you into a real frontline (the tank/bruiser that opens a fight) you can sit in for the full duration.

Situational items:

  • Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads — into heavy CC or AP-heavy lanes (Malphite R, Rumble, Sylas). Swap Steelcaps when crowd control (stuns, roots, slows) is the bigger problem than physical damage.
  • Death's Dance Death's Dance — vs heavy burst damage (Yasuo + Caitlyn, or a fed AP mid). Turns 30% of the physical and magic damage you take into a slow bleed spread over 3 seconds, so you have time to react instead of getting deleted.
  • Hollow Radiance Hollow Radiance — into grouped AP wave-clearers (Karthus, Brand, Cassiopeia). The burn aura punishes them for fighting near you and speeds up wave clear; for actual anti-heal, buy Executioner's Calling or Mortal Reminder instead.
  • Maw of Malmortius Maw of Malmortius — vs heavy magic burst (Rumble, Vladimir, Cassiopeia, Sylas). The magic shield procs (auto-triggers) under 30% HP and saves you from the first ability rotation; the lifeline passive saves an all-in.
  • Dead Man's Plate Dead Man's Plate — vs kite-heavy comps (Caitlyn, Senna, Kog'Maw — enemies that walk back while attacking you to stay out of melee range). Movement speed plus Unsinkable's 15% slow resist help you stick to the back line (the high-damage carries who stand behind their tanks) after R.

Boots: Plated Steelcaps default. Mercury's Treads if the enemy team has 3+ stuns/roots or two AP threats.

Skill order: Max Q first (main damage, armor shred, lowest cooldown), E second (lower cooldown means more dash trades + setup for Q), W last. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Last Stand. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating and Revitalize. Stat shards: Attack Speed, Adaptive Force, Health Scaling.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions MonkeyKing beats

  • Short-range stack-scaling juggernaut without dash

Crushing Blow (Q) bonus range out-trades Nasus Siphoning Strike (Q) auto window, denying his stack accumulation under tower. Wither (W) slow does not stop Nimbus Strike (E) dash and Fury of the Sands (R) HP buff cannot save him from Cyclone (R) knock-up at four items.

    Nasus
  • Short-range spin juggernaut without dash

Warrior Trickster (W) breaks Garen Judgment (E) spin channel target lock so the damage burns on the clone, and Crushing Blow (Q) bonus range out-trades Decisive Strike (Q) silence reach. Nimbus Strike (E) dash plus Demacian Justice (R) miss leave Garen exposed to Cyclone (R).

    Garen
  • Short-range juggernaut with W true damage

Nimbus Strike (E) dashes past Sett Facebreaker (E) 450 pull range so the trade always favors range, and Crushing Blow (Q) bonus range out-trades Haymaker (W) windup. Warrior Trickster (W) breaks The Show Stopper (R) target lock and Pit Grit passive cannot reset on clone.

    Sett
  • Armored frontline tank with shield passive

Black Cleaver plus Crushing Blow (Q) armor shred cuts through the armor Malphite stacks, breaking Granite Shield's 10% absorb early instead of letting it recharge. Warrior Trickster (W) turns Wukong invisible as Unstoppable Force (R) lands, so the charge hits empty ground.

    Malphite
  • Armored frontline tank with stacking resists

Black Cleaver plus Crushing Blow (Q) armor shred deletes Ornn Living Forge passive masterwork resistances, so even when he survives the all-in his team-wide passive value drops. Warrior Trickster (W) turns Wukong invisible as Call of the Forge God (R) lands, missing empty ground.

    Ornn

Champions that beat MonkeyKing

  • Ranged AP top with blind and poison

Teemo Blinding Dart (Q) blanks the Crushing Blow (Q) empowered auto, and Toxic Shot (E) plus Move Quick (W) keep him outside the 650 range of Nimbus Strike (E). Noxious Trap (R) covers his retreat, and his passive stealth leaves the Warrior Trickster (W) clone hitting nothing.

    Teemo
  • Ranged kite top with vault knockback

Quinn Vault (E) knockback dashes her out of Nimbus Strike (E) range and Blinding Assault (Q) blanks Crushing Blow (Q) empowered auto. Heightened Senses (W) attack speed kites Cyclone (R) follow-up and Behind Enemy Lines (R) escapes Wukong dive across the map.

    Quinn
  • Ranged AP top with stack-stun mobility

Kennen Thundering Shuriken (Q) and Electrical Surge (W) poke Wukong from outside Nimbus Strike (E) range, and Lightning Rush (E) escapes Cyclone (R) area before knock-up resolves.

    Kennen
  • CC-immune duelist with cleanse ultimate

Olaf Ragnarok (R) strips the stun from Cyclone (R) and grants CC immunity, so the spin still displaces him but nothing else lands. Berserker Rage ramps his attack speed the lower he gets, and Reckless Swing (E) true damage chunks Wukong regardless of armor.

    Olaf
  • CC-immune duelist with HP-zero ultimate

Tryndamere Undying Rage (R) keeps him alive at 1 HP through the Cyclone (R) burst, so he walks out swinging at full damage while Wukong's only hard CC is on cooldown. Mocking Shout (W) slow plus Spinning Slash (E) kite every Nimbus Strike (E) gap-close in a long duel.

    Tryndamere

Key matchups

  • Darius: Even matchup. Trade on Crushing Blow cooldown — Q range out-spaces Darius's Apprehend hook range, so you can land Q-AA and walk back before he gets a full Decimate. Never trade inside his bleed-stack reset window (he wants 5 stacks for the empowered Noxian Guillotine). If he ults you below 50% HP, W to break target lock on the execute.
  • Fiora: Hard matchup. Her Riposte eats Crushing Blow entirely and answers with a 25% slow and cripple for 2 seconds; it only stuns you if it catches an immobilising effect, which Crushing Blow is not. Either way you lose the whole Q cooldown, so never throw Q into her W stance. Play around her vitals: bait the parry with an E in, W out, then re-engage. Buy Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps first and look for jungler help — solo you lose at every item spike.
  • Teemo: Ranged poke matchup, the worst of your lane phase. He pokes you from outside Nimbus Strike's 650 range and Blinding Dart (Q) blocks Crushing Blow's auto outright, so a blind trade costs the whole cooldown. Take Doran's Shield, farm under tower, and call for a gank — do not trade until Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads and Black Cleaver Black Cleaver are online, and even then walk in only after Move Quick (W) is spent.
  • Garen / Nasus: Favorable. Crushing Blow's range out-trades their melee auto window. Garen's Judgment (E) does most of its damage while you stand in it, so trade with Q, then W out of the spin and let the clone soak the rest. Against Nasus, deny his Siphoning Strike stacks by zoning him off the wave with E-Q every cooldown.
  • Sett: Favourable. Your E dashes past Sett's Facebreaker pull range, and Crushing Blow's armor shred punishes his self-healing W shield. Wait for him to commit Haymaker, W the moment he winds it up so the clone eats it.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3: With one point in Q, E, W you have the full trade combo. Walk in from the side of the wave you control, E onto the enemy laner, Q auto, W to disengage. This is your first real trade window in lane.
  • Level 6: Cyclone unlocks. Any grouped fight around dragon or the river scuttle crab is a multi-knock-up waiting to happen. Communicate with your jungler — your team starts winning the early dragon fights whenever R is up.
  • Black Cleaver Black Cleaver completion (~ minute 12-14): 100 gold cheaper than the item that used to open the build, so it lands slightly sooner, and five Carve stacks plus Crushing Blow's debuff mean the enemy top laner's armor stops answering your trades. This is where you solo-kill in lane or teleport into a fight bot side.
  • 3-item spike (Black Cleaver + Boots + Sundered Sky, ~ minute 22-25): Peak teamfight power. R + Q + AA combo deletes a back-line carry (the high-damage enemy who stays behind their tanks), and you have enough HP to survive the focus afterward.

Common mistakes

  • Using R with nobody to hit. Cyclone lasts 2 seconds and gives you 20% move speed while it runs, so you can walk into a group after starting it; what you cannot do is get more than one knock-up out of the same enemy. Opening R at max distance still wastes most of the duration: E in first, then spin.
  • Wasting W before the fight starts. Warrior Trickster's clone is a fake target: it tricks the enemy into burning abilities on a copy. If you W to reposition with no enemy nearby, the clone has no one to fool. Use it the moment an enemy commits an ability, not before.
  • Spinning the front line. Cyclone catches anyone you walk through — that includes the enemy tank. If you R the Sion, he is happy: you wasted your ult on the wrong target while the carries flank around. Always aim R at the squishy back line.
  • Throwing Q out of range to "poke" minions. Crushing Blow is a melee auto-reset, not a ranged ability. If you Q a minion at the front of the wave you waste the buff on something that will not return damage. Save Q for fights or for last-hitting under tower.
  • Trading while the enemy's reset window is up. Several top laners (Riven, Irelia, Jax) chain their cooldowns into one burst window. If you engage while those cooldowns are ready, you eat the whole combo with nothing of your own left.

Advanced tip

Practice the R-Flash combo: start Cyclone on the spot, then Flash forward at any point during the 2 second spin. The AOE knock-up follows you — you end up on top of an enemy team that thought they were safe outside your dash range. The trade-off is you spend Flash, so save the trick for fights that win the game (baron contests, late-game 5v5s). Drill it in the Practice Tool a dozen times before trying it in a ranked match; the timing window is short and the cooldown on Flash is long.
