Grasp triggers off W bite every 4 seconds in trades, healing Volibear and stacking permanent HP. Demolish punishes the turret after a winning trade for chunked plate gold, Bone Plating eats bruiser burst, Overgrowth converts farmed minions into permanent HP.
Triumph restores 5% of your missing health plus 2.5% of your maximum health on takedown — perfect for diving the back line with R and surviving the burst. Coup de Grace adds 8% damage to enemies under 40% HP for kill closure with double-W.
Vs ranged tops (Vayne, Quinn, Teemo), swap Precision to Sorcery with Nimbus Cloak (Move Speed after Flash/Ghost) and Gathering Storm (late Adaptive scaling), trading kill threat for engage range.
Win Condition
Hit level 6, R-flank or R-dive the back line, land Q stun on the carry, double-W for burst plus heal, stay alive long enough for cleanup. Spike compounds with Sterak's Gage and Spirit Visage.
Weakness
No range and no dash at all — Q is a run, not a leap. Ranged tops with blind or knockback kite him from outside auto range; true-damage duelists (Fiora, Camille R) ignore tank stats and shred him 1v1.
Overview
Volibear is a bruiser-tank hybrid (a melee champion who builds enough damage to threaten kills and enough HP/resistances to survive being focused). His identity sits on three pillars: a passive that stacks Attack Speed on every hit, a Q that doubles his Move Speed towards champions and hands him a guaranteed stun on his next basic attack, and an R leap onto back-line carries that disables enemy towers nearby. The kit forces close-range, sustained fights — exactly the shape where Grasp, Sterak's Gage and Spirit Visage's healing-amp stack into a tank that hurts.
The game plan is "survive lane until 6, then start hunting." Pre-6 Volibear has no dash escape, so the lane is small trades on Q stuns and farming under tower if pushed. From minute 8-10 on, every time R is up the side lane stops being a 1v1 — it becomes a 30-second window where a Volibear who Flashes and then lands R behind the enemy carry deletes them. Late game he is the engage tool: R-flank, Q the highest-priority target, eat focus while the team cleans up.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Doran's Shield +
Health Potion. The HP-regen passive softens enemy poke (low-cost ranged damage chipping HP without committing). Doran's Shield is the default — your win condition is "still alive at minute 14."
Core items (in order):
Sundered Sky — your defining first item. The first basic attack against any champion in a fight crits and heals Volibear for 90% of his base attack damage plus 4% of his missing Health, once every 10 seconds per target. Read that as missing and not maximum: the item is at its worst when you poke from full and at its best when the duel has already gone long and you are the one at 40% — which is exactly the trade Q's stunning auto and the W double-bite are built to hold. Two patches in a row touched it. Patch 26.16 cut the healing but added 50 health and removed the Ruby Crystal from the recipe; patch 26.17 took that health back out and shaved 5 attack damage, so the item now finishes at 40 attack damage. The build path is Tunneler, then Caulfield's Warhammer, then a 900-gold upgrade with no cheap component left to buy on a short back. Tunneler at 1150 gold is a realistic first back and it is health plus attack damage, so the half of the item that keeps you in lane arrives first.
Plated Steelcaps — default boots when the enemy team's main damage source is basic attacks. Damage-reduction passive softens carries during engage.
Sterak's Gage — bonus HP plus a shield that triggers automatically below 30% HP. The shield scales with bonus HP, so it grows with every tank item. This is what lets Volibear survive the burst window after R-flanking onto a back line.
Spirit Visage — magic resist plus healing-amp that boosts W double-bite heal and Sundered Sky's heal. Fourth item into any AP threat.
Dead Man's Plate: 55 armor, 350 health, 4% move speed. Shipwrecker builds up to 20 bonus move speed while you walk and dumps it as bonus physical damage on your next attack; the slow was removed in patch 14.1, so what keeps you on a target is Q, not this item. Unsinkable adds 15% slow resist, which is the part that actually protects the engage.
Situational items:
Mercury's Treads — swap from Plated Steelcaps vs 3+ CC sources or 2+ AP threats. Tenacity (a stat that shortens stun/slow duration) keeps Q windows alive in chain-CC fights.
Thornmail — vs auto-attack carries (Vayne, Tryndamere, Master Yi). Reflects damage and applies Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts the target's healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds), the only way to slow Tryndamere's Bloodlust regen or punish Vayne's lifesteal.
Force of Nature — vs heavy AP poke comps (Brand + Karthus, Vladimir, Cassiopeia). 70 magic resist and 6% Move Speed after 8 magic hits.
Jak'Sho, The Protean — vs balanced AD+AP teams; bonus Armor + MR rise 30% after 5s of champion combat.
Hollow Radiance — vs grouped AP wave-clearers (Karthus, Brand, Cassiopeia). The magic burn aura ticks damage on anyone fighting near you and gives MR.
Boots:
Plated Steelcaps is the default. Switch to
Mercury's Treads vs heavy CC chains or AP-heavy compositions.
Skill order: Max W first (the double-bite heal and on-hit damage scales hardest per rank — your main lane sustain and trade tool). Max E second (better Shield value plus a longer slow for engage). Max Q last; one early point is enough for the Move Speed and stun duration. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Resolve with Grasp of the Undying — every 4 seconds in lane combat, your next basic attack on a champion deals bonus magic damage, heals you, and grants permanent HP. Pair with Demolish (your third attack on a turret adds 85 plus 28% of your max health as physical damage, every 30 seconds, which is how a winning trade turns into a plate), Bone Plating (damage reduction on the next 3 hits after you take damage), and Overgrowth (HP scaling with nearby minion deaths). Secondary Precision with Triumph (restores 5% of your missing health plus 2.5% of your maximum health on takedown — saves you after R-diving) and Coup de Grace (+8% damage to enemies under 40% HP). Stat shards: Adaptive Force + Adaptive Force + Health Scaling — extra trade damage early and bonus HP for the late-game tank stack.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Volibear beats
Short-range melee duelist with spin dash
Volibear Thundering Smash (Q) Move Speed burst plus guaranteed first-auto stun catches Tryndamere mid-Bloodlust (Q) crit window, denying his Spinning Slash (E) escape angle.
TryndamereShort-range melee duelist with dash-through-unit
Volibear Thundering Smash (Q) Move Speed burst plus guaranteed first-auto stun interrupts Yasuo Sweeping Blade (E) dash mid-flight on a clean Q connect. Frenzied Maul (W) double bite outheals Last Breath (R) burst window and Way of the Wanderer passive shield refreshes too slow.
YasuoHypermobile melee duelist with grapple dash
Volibear Thundering Smash (Q) Move Speed burst plus guaranteed first-auto stun lands before Camille Hookshot (E) grapple comes back up, locking her for double Frenzied Maul (W). Sky Splitter (E) slows her landing zone, and the double bite out-heals The Hextech Ultimatum (R) cage.
CamilleMelee bruiser with long Q animation combo
Aatrox The Darkin Blade (Q) third-cast knock-up has a long wind-up, so Volibear Thundering Smash (Q) clean stun cancels the swing mid-animation. Frenzied Maul (W) double bite outheals Deathbringer Stance passive damage and World Ender (R) revive does not break the Q stun chain.
AatroxMelee juggernaut with grit-charge W
Sett Haymaker (W) needs grit charge time, so Volibear Thundering Smash (Q) lands inside that window and double Frenzied Maul (W) outheals the eventual knock-up trade. Sky Splitter (E) slows him while the charge builds, so the second bite arrives before Facebreaker (E) can pull.
Sett
Champions that beat Volibear
Ranged ADC top with knockback escape
Vayne Condemn (E) knocks Volibear out of attack range before the Thundering Smash (Q) stun auto lands, and pins him to terrain instead. Silver Bolts (W) true damage cuts through his Overgrowth health, and the Final Hour (R) invisibility makes Sky Splitter (E) a guess.
VayneRanged kite top with blind and vault
Quinn Vault (E) knockback resets her behind Volibear before the Thundering Smash (Q) stunning auto lands, denying the engage. Blinding Assault (Q) blanks the empowered auto and Heightened Senses (W) attack speed kites the Frenzied Maul (W) bite window in extended lane trades.
QuinnRanged AP poke harasser with blind
Teemo Blinding Dart (Q) blanks the empowered first-auto stun of Volibear Thundering Smash (Q) outright, denying the engage. Toxic Shot (E) poison plus Noxious Trap (R) zones kite him out of Frenzied Maul (W) bite range and Move Quick (W) resets spacing every trade.
TeemoTrue-damage duelist with a parry
Fiora's Riposte (W) parries Thundering Smash's stunning auto and stuns Volibear back instead. Her Duelist's Dance Vitals deal true damage (damage that ignores Armor and Magic Resist — no defensive stat reduces it), so Volibear's tank stack does nothing in the 1v1.
FioraAnti-melee duelist who dodges basic attacks
Jax's Counter Strike (E) dodges every basic attack for 2 seconds, including the stunning auto that ends Volibear's Q. Q resolves with no stun, no damage, and Counter Strike then stuns Volibear and everyone around him.
Jax
Key matchups
- Darius: Hard early. His Hemorrhage bleed (a damage-over-time stack that ramps with each hit) ticks through your W heal, and his pull cancels your Q wind-up if he lands it first. Freeze the wave (let it sit just outside your tower so he walks far from his) and trade only when his Apprehend is in cooldown. After
Sterak's Gage the trade flips. - Garen: Skill matchup. Decisive Strike (Q) silences you, so the risk is being unable to cast Thundering Smash (Q) at the exact moment you want to engage. If your Q is already running, the silence does not touch it — the stun comes from a basic attack and it goes out anyway. So press Q before you walk into range of his empowered auto, not after. Bait the silence with a feint step forward, then commit once he has spent it on your minions. With Thundering Smash back every 12 seconds you can spend one Q on the bait and still have it ready for the real trade.
- Vayne / Teemo / Quinn: Hardest lanes. They sit outside your auto range and use blind or knockback to cancel Thundering Smash's stunning auto. Take
Doran's Shield, freeze under tower, and call your jungler the moment they overextend. Buy
Thornmail after Sundered Sky if Vayne snowballs (builds a growing lead from kills and gold). - Fiora: Hardest melee. Her W is a parry (a brief shield that blocks and counters the next ability — bait it with a basic attack before committing Q). Her Vitals deal true damage, so HP stacking does nothing. Rush
Plated Steelcaps and play for jungle ganks. - Aatrox: Favorable. His Q third-cast knock-up has a long animation tell; a clean Thundering Smash stun cancels the swing. Save Q for the third Q specifically. Double-W out-heals his World Ender (R) bonus AD window.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3: All three basic abilities unlocked, and this is where the 26.15 buff lands hardest: Thundering Smash is on 12 seconds at rank 1 instead of 14 and stays rank 1 until level 14, so it is two seconds off every trade cycle you actually play. Your first real Q stun + double-W trade lands here. If you can pin a melee laner against your minion wave at this point, you win the all-in (a full commit to a kill, no fallback).
- Level 6: First Stormbringer. R's Health buff plus AOE slow plus tower disable turns 1v1s into kill threats, but read the rank: the tower stays off for 2 seconds at rank 1, 3 at rank 2 and 4 at rank 3. A level 6 dive has to be in and out inside those 2 seconds.
Sundered Sky completion (~ minute 11-13): First major spike, smaller than it was: 40 attack damage instead of 45 and a reduced heal since 26.16. The crit-on-first-hit still converts every Q stun into a winning trade, and the missing-Health half of the heal means the deeper you are the more it returns, so push the wave once it is online — but a solo R dive onto bot lane now wants your jungler behind it rather than the item alone.
Sterak's Gage + Spirit Visage (~ minute 22-26): Peak teamfight window. The Sterak's shield plus Spirit Visage healing-amp turn one R dive into a 4-second invincibility where Volibear deletes the back line. Force every Drake and Baron fight here.
Common mistakes
- Q-ing into minions. Thundering Smash stuns the first champion you basic-attack during the Move Speed window — if you run into a wave and auto a caster minion, Q resolves with no stun on the enemy champion. Always walk through the minions and stop with a clear champion target in front.
- Forgetting the W second cast. Frenzied Maul does significantly more damage plus a heal when cast a second time on the same target within a few seconds. Single-cast W is a clear-only tool. If you only press W once in a champion duel, you gave up half your damage and all your sustain.
- R-ing in front of the enemy team. Stormbringer lands where you target, not where you came from. R in front of a fight lets the enemy carry walk backwards while your team has nobody to focus. Always R behind the carry: it forces them forward into your front line and gives the tower-disable for side-lane dives.
- Building full tank with no Sterak's Gage. The burst window is the 2 seconds after R lands. Without Sterak's, the enemy carry chunks Volibear through Plated Steelcaps before he reaches W bite range. Sterak's shield is non-negotiable: it goes down right after boots, before any other defensive item.
- Wasting E from max range. Sky Splitter's Shield only triggers if Volibear stands in the blast zone. Throwing it out at max range for the slow alone throws away half of what the ability does. E goes on your own feet when you engage.
Advanced tip
Practice the Flash-R reverse engage in side-lane skirmishes (1v1 or 2v2 fights in side lane while the rest of the map fights elsewhere). When the enemy is pushed past river without vision, R behind them so you land between them and their tower. The R-slow plus Q-stun chain forces them away from their escape, and the tower-disable covers the dive even if their jungler shows. Positioning matters more than timing.
