Grasp triggers off W bite in every duel, healing Volibear and stacking permanent HP. Demolish punishes towers when you shove a lane, Bone Plating eats counter-jungle burst, Overgrowth turns farmed camps into permanent HP.
Triumph heals 5% missing HP plus 2.5% max HP and gives 20 bonus gold on takedown — perfect for diving towers with R and surviving the burst. Coup de Grace adds 8% damage to enemies under 40% HP for gank kill closure with double-W.
Vs heavy-CC enemy junglers (Sejuani, Maokai, Amumu), swap Precision to Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free base boots at minute 12) and Cosmic Insight (lower Summoner cooldowns), trading kill threat for tempo.
Win Condition
Level 3 by minute 3, gank a side lane with Q stun + double-W, snowball the ahead laner, convert pressure into objectives (Scuttle, Drake, Herald). Sundered Sky by minute 11, then solo-dive with R.
Weakness
No second escape, no clear sustain pre-W rank 3. Skirmishing junglers with dashes (Lee Sin, Nocturne) reset position faster than Q lands; loses 1v1s if he commits pre-Sterak's Gage.
Overview
Volibear in the jungle is a bruiser-tank ganker (a melee jungler who builds enough damage to convert ganks into kills and enough HP/resistances to survive the dive). His identity sits on three pillars: a passive that stacks Attack Speed for fast clears, a Q that hands him a guaranteed stun on the first basic attack — the best level 3 gank tool in the game without a flash — and an R that disables enemy towers, turning every gank into a potential tower dive (rushing under tower for a kill despite the tower's shots).
The game plan is "gank early, snowball laners (build a growing lead from kills + gold), take objectives." The Volibear clear is W start, E second camp, Q third camp, reaching level 3 around minute 3:00-3:15. From there every minute you are not ganking is wasted: Q's Move Speed plus an ally's slow or root chains into a guaranteed kill on most squishies. Mid-game, R unlocks tower diving — the tower-disable plus AOE slow lets a Volibear with R + Flash solo-dive a low-HP enemy hugging their tower. Late game you are the engage tool: R-flank, Q the carry, eat the burst while your team cleans up.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Mosstomper Seedling (450g) + 1
Health Potion (50g). That is the full 500 gold you start with; the Refillable Potion is a first-back purchase, not a start. Mosstomper Seedling is the melee jungle starter pet companion — it grows in stats as you clear camps and provides sustain during clear, and the Refillable Potion you buy on that first recall gives you reusable potions to top up HP between camps.
Core items (in order):
Mosstomper Seedling — pet companion (it grows as you clear camps). Once fully grown it gives you a Shield while out of combat and after killing a large monster — no Armor, no magic resist, no tenacity, just that shield. It is exactly the profile Volibear wants: you arrive at the next camp, or at the lane you are ganking, with effective HP already on top of your bar, which is what pays for opening a dive.
Sundered Sky — first full item. The first basic attack against any champion in a fight crits and heals Volibear for 90% of his base attack damage plus 4% of his missing Health, re-arming after 10 seconds on that target. Missing, not maximum: the heal pays least when you open a trade at full HP and most when you are already deep in one, so it rewards staying on the target through Q's stunning auto rather than hitting once and backing off. Two patches touched it and only one was a plain nerf: 26.16 cut the healing but handed back 50 health and dropped the Ruby Crystal from the recipe, then 26.17 took that health away again along with 5 attack damage, leaving the item at 40. The recipe is now Tunneler plus Caulfield's Warhammer, and the last step is a single 900-gold payment with no cheap component left to buy as filler. Still the first item every game, but time the back that completes it.
Plated Steelcaps — default boots when the enemy team's main damage source is basic attacks. Damage-reduction passive softens carries during R-dives.
Sterak's Gage — bonus HP plus a shield that triggers automatically below 30% HP. Shield scales with bonus HP, so it grows with every tank item. This is what lets Volibear survive the burst window after R-flanking.
Spirit Visage — magic resist plus healing-amp that boosts W double-bite heal and Sundered Sky's heal. Fourth item into any AP threat.
Dead Man's Plate — builds up to 20 bonus Move Speed while walking between camps and discharges it as bonus physical damage on the next basic attack, and cuts the effect of slows by 15%. Pairs with Q's Move Speed for unmissable ganks.
Situational items:
Mercury's Treads — swap from Plated Steelcaps vs 3+ CC sources or 2+ AP threats. Tenacity (a stat that shortens stun/slow duration) keeps Q windows alive in chain-CC fights.
Thornmail — vs auto-attack carries (Vayne, Tryndamere, Master Yi). Reflects damage and applies Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts the target's healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds), the only way to slow Tryndamere's regen or punish Vayne's lifesteal.
Force of Nature — vs heavy AP poke comps. Stacks MR as you take magic damage and grants Move Speed.
Jak'Sho, The Protean — vs balanced AD+AP teams. After 5 seconds of champion combat your bonus Armor and MR go up by 30% until the fight ends.
Hollow Radiance — vs grouped AP wave-clearers (Karthus, Brand, Cassiopeia). The magic burn aura ticks damage on anyone fighting near you and gives MR.
Boots:
Plated Steelcaps is the default. Switch to
Mercury's Treads vs heavy CC chains or AP-heavy compositions.
Skill order: Max W first (heal + on-hit damage scales hardest per rank — main clear sustain). Max E second (better Shield + longer slow). Max Q last. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Resolve with Grasp of the Undying — every 4 seconds in champion combat, your next auto deals bonus magic damage, heals you, and grants permanent HP. Pair with Demolish (your third attack on a tower deals a burst of bonus damage), Bone Plating (damage reduction on the next 3 hits after taking damage), and Overgrowth (HP scaling with nearby camp/minion deaths). Secondary Precision with Triumph (heal 5% missing HP plus 2.5% max HP and 20 bonus gold on takedown) and Coup de Grace (+8% damage under 40% HP). Stat shards: Adaptive Force + Adaptive Force + Health Scaling.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Volibear beats
Immobile farming AD jungler with dash on hit
Master Yi spends Alpha Strike (Q) on camps and its rank 1 cooldown is 20 seconds, so Volibear Thundering Smash (Q) plus level 3 invade lands the first-auto stun before Yi can Alpha out. Frenzied Maul (W) double bite chunks him before Highlander (R) attack speed window opens.
Master YiImmobile farming AP jungler without dash
Karthus has no dash at all, so Volibear Thundering Smash (Q) plus level 3 invade lands the first-auto stun cleanly. The Frenzied Maul (W) double-bite plus Sky Splitter (E) combo bursts him before Wall of Pain (W) can slow Volibear out of melee range or Requiem (R) channels.
KarthusIsolation assassins weak at level 3 ganks
Pre-6 Kha'Zix has no meaningful Leap (E) and Void Assault (R) stealth isn't online. Volibear invades red side at level 3: Q stun + double-W kills before Kha'Zix can reset the dash, because Taste Their Fear (Q) needs isolation he can't enforce.
Kha ZixForm-locked junglers vulnerable before transformation
Pre-form Kayn has weak stats and Reaping Slash (Q) on long cooldown; Shadow Step (E) only a terrain dash. Volibear's level 3 Q stun + double-W bursts him before orb threshold. Once Kayn transforms around minute 7 the matchup flips.
KaynMobile assassins vulnerable to point-and-click commit
Thundering Smash (Q) makes Volibear's next attack a stun and pins Zed while Living Shadow (W) is on cooldown, and Sky Splitter (E) slows the ground he has to land on when Death Mark (R) ends, taking away his exit angle.

Champions that beat Volibear
Skirmishing junglers with multiple dashes
Lee Sin's Safeguard (W first cast) is a self-dash to an ally or ward — he leaves attack range before the Thundering Smash (Q) stunning auto can land, so it whiffs. Dragon's Rage (R) kicks Volibear backwards out of his own follow-up range during the early skirmish window 3-6.
Lee SinSpell-shield assassins with global pressure
Nocturne's Shroud of Darkness (W) is a spell shield that eats Thundering Smash's crowd control component, so the Q window closes with no stun.
NocturneStealth junglers with clone deception
Shaco's Deceive (Q) is a stealth blink, so Thundering Smash (Q) runs out with nobody to stun. Hallucinate (R) then doubles the silhouettes and Stormbringer (R) lands on a spot, not on a champion, so half the time the sweet spot drops on the clone.
ShacoStack-scaling skirmisher junglers with damage reduction
Bel'Veth out-paces Volibear in a jungle skirmish — Endless Banquet stacking and Royal Maelstrom damage reduction blunt the Q stun plus double-W trade pattern before Frenzied Maul (W) can heal it back
Bel VethRoaming assassin junglers with wall traversal
Talon out-roams and out-bursts Voli pre-6 — Shadow Assault stealth bypasses Q stun lock and Rake slow keeps Voli out of W bite range

Key matchups
- Lee Sin: Hardest skirmish. Safeguard (W) dashes him out of attack range before the Thundering Smash (Q) stunning auto lands, and Dragon's Rage (R) kicks you clear of Frenzied Maul (W) bite range mid-trade. The 12-second Q gets the window back sooner; it does not win you the duel. Avoid invading pre-6; clear safely, ward Krugs / Gromp, and look for objective swaps (Drake / Herald) instead of duels. Post-6 your R reaches him through walls; the matchup neutralizes.
- Master Yi: Favorable. Invade his red side at level 3 with Q stun + double-W: he burns Alpha Strike on the camp and its 20-second rank 1 cooldown leaves him nothing to bait with. If you hit minute 3:30 with him still farming, walk in.
- Karthus: Heavily favorable. No escape ability, slow clear without items. Track his pathing and gank his lane every R-up — Q stun chains with most laner CC for a guaranteed kill.
- Kha'Zix: Favorable early, even mid-game. Scales hard with isolation kills, so stick close to your laners through minute 8 and deny him isolated picks. Once Q evolves (around minute 10-12), let him farm while you take objectives.
- Sejuani / Maokai: Skill matchups. They match your engage with their own ult-level CC. Don't try to out-engage them in a 5v5; flank (engage from a side angle, not the front) so their AOE ult catches their own back line.
Mercury's Treads mandatory here.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3: All three basic abilities unlocked. First gank window — clear three camps and rotate to a pushed lane. Q stun + double-W bursts most squishies. Thundering Smash is on 12 seconds at rank 1 since 26.15, down from 14, and stays rank 1 until level 14. That does not speed up your gank cadence, which is bound by walking: the two seconds only buy a second stun in a skirmish that runs past twelve seconds, which is a Drake fight, not a drive-by gank. If your laner has any slow or root (Ahri charm, Lulu Q, Sett W), it's a guaranteed kill.
- Level 6: First Stormbringer. R's bonus Health plus AOE slow plus tower disable transforms gank attempts into tower dives: leap onto a 40% HP enemy under their tower, the tower goes inert for a few seconds (longer at higher R ranks), Q-W-W with your laner's follow-up.
Sundered Sky completion (~ minute 10-12): First major spike, flatter than it used to be: 40 attack damage instead of 45 and a smaller heal since 26.16. Crit-on-first-hit still turns every Q stun into a winning trade, and because the heal scales with missing Health it is the long dives that pay, not the drive-by ones — but the R-up window now wants a laner's slow or root behind it.
Sterak's Gage + Spirit Visage (~ minute 20-25): Peak teamfight window. Sterak's shield plus healing-amp turn one R dive into a survivable window on the back line. Force every Drake and Baron fight here.
Common mistakes
- Q-ing into minions or jungle camps. Thundering Smash stuns the first champion you basic-attack during the Move Speed window — if you run into a creep and auto a minion, Q resolves with no stun on the enemy. Always walk through the minions and stop with a champion target in front.
- Forgetting the W second cast. Frenzied Maul does roughly twice the damage and heals when cast a second time on the same target within a few seconds. Single-cast W is a clear-only tool. Ganking with only one W per target gives up half your damage and all your sustain.
- Ganking before level 3. Pre-3 you have no Q stun and no engage. Trying to gank at level 2 wastes the passive surprise window (the laners haven't seen you on the map yet) and gives the enemy free vision of your jungle path. Always full-clear to level 3 first.
- R-ing in front of the enemy team. Stormbringer lands where you target. R in front of a team fight lets the enemy carry walk backwards while your team has nobody to focus. Always R behind the carry: forces them forward into your front line and uses the tower-disable for side-lane dives.
- Smiting too late on objectives. Volibear has no execute beyond autos + W bite — slow against a contested Drake or Baron with a Lee Sin or Kha'Zix smite-stealing. Smite when the objective drops below your own Smite damage: 600 at base, 1000 with Unleashed Smite, 1400 with Primal Smite. If unsure, Smite early.
Advanced tip
Practice the R behind tower dive in pushed side lanes. When an enemy laner is overextended (past river, no vision) at 50% HP, R behind their tower (towards their second tower or fountain), landing between them and their escape. R's tower-disable means the tower fires nothing for a few seconds, long enough for Q stun + double-W + your laner's follow-up. Check minimap pings and ward the river before committing; once you press R the leap cannot be cancelled.
