Core Abilities

Doom 'n Gloom
Vex periodically becomes Gloomy: her next basic ability fears and interrupts dashes. Any enemy who dashes near her gets marked for bonus damage that refreshes Gloomy.
Mistral Bolt
Mistral Bolt
Slow missile that speeds up mid-flight for magic damage. Main poke, waveclear, and combo finisher; consumes Gloom on enemies hit for extra damage.
Personal Space
Personal Space
Short shield plus a melee-range shockwave that damages enemies around her. Use it to tank a poke and self-peel against any enemy who walks on top of you.
Looming Darkness
Looming Darkness
Targeted shadow zone that lands after a short travel: deals magic damage, slows, and applies Gloom. Your setup tool — Gloom enables Q one-shots.
Shadow Surge
Shadow Surge
Long-range missile that marks the first champion hit. Recast to dash to them and deal bonus damage. Killing the marked target resets its cooldown.

Why these runes

Sorcery primary: Aery procs off Q and E for free poke damage on her low-cooldown abilities. Manaflow Band fixes Vex's tight early mana, Transcendence adds 10 ability haste by level 8 and 20% cooldown refunds on takedowns from level 11, Scorch finishes low-HP poke trades.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery sustains the lane (no innate healing), Cosmic Insight shaves cooldown off Flash and your summoner spells for more frequent R + Flash plays.

When to switch secondary

If the enemy team has 2+ low-resistance squishies, swap Inspiration to Precision with Presence of Mind (mana refund on takedown) and Coup de Grace (+8% damage to enemies under 40% HP) to chain R resets in team fights.

Win Condition

Land E for Gloom and the slow, then Mistral Bolt for empowered burst. After level 6, R into a marked squishy and chain into Q + W to finish; the R reset on takedown chains into a second pickoff.

Weakness

No dash and no real escape. Vex has slow projectiles, a melee-range W, and limited mana early — long-range artillery kites her, and reset assassins beat her if R misses or Doom 'n Gloom is on cooldown.

Overview

Vex is a short-to-mid range AP burst mage (a champion who deals a lot of damage in 1-2 seconds) built around one identity: she punishes mobility. Her Doom 'n Gloom passive periodically becomes Gloomy, and her next basic ability fears any enemy hit while also interrupting dashes — and any nearby dash also marks the dasher for bonus damage that refreshes the passive. The kit on top of that is straightforward: Looming Darkness (E) is a small zone that slows and applies Gloom, Mistral Bolt (Q) is the main empowered nuke, Personal Space (W) is a short self-peel shield + shockwave (a quick burst of damage around herself to push attackers off), and Shadow Surge (R) is a long-range mark-and-dash with a cooldown reset on takedown.

Her game plan is simple: in lane, use E to slow and apply Gloom, then Q through the Gloom for amplified damage; bait the enemy into dashing on you so Doom 'n Gloom triggers and they eat a fear; after level 6, look to R isolated targets and chain the reset on kill. She has no dash, no escape, and her W only works at melee range, so positioning behind your front line (the tank/bruiser that opens the fight) is the price of admission.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Ring Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potion Health Potions. The mana regen lets you spam Q and E for waveclear without running dry before your first back.

Core items (in order):

  1. Luden's Echo Luden's Echo — burst spike, mana sustain for Q spam, AOE damage on the first ability of a combo. Comes online around minute 12-14 and flips your wave control.
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration; turns your Q through Gloom into a real one-shot on squishies (low-defense targets like ADCs and other mages).
  3. Shadowflame Shadowflame — 110 ability power and a flat 15 magic penetration that never changes with the target's health. Its Cinderbloom passive makes your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% health for 20% extra damage, which lines up with R finishers.
  4. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game scaling multiplier, your highest-AP item slot.

Situational items:

  • Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass — into divers and assassins (Zed, Diana, Talon, Akali). Stasis buys the 2.5 seconds you need after blowing R while your team peels for you (protects you from whoever is attacking you).
  • Void Staff Void Staff — the moment any priority target buys a Magic Resist item.
  • Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil — into heavy single-target magic CC (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun).
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — into healing-stacking compositions (Soraka mid, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo top).

Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes is default. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity are acceptable if the team needs more R uptime as a finisher and the enemy has low MR.

Skill order: Max Q first (your only ranged damage and main DPS), E second (more damage and a longer slow: Looming Darkness sits on a flat 12-second cooldown at every rank, one second shorter than before, so ranks buy strength rather than uptime), W last because its shield amount barely scales and you only need one point for self-peel. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Sorcery with Summon Aery, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Aery procs off Q and E for free chip damage; Manaflow Band fixes Vex's tight early mana. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight, or Sorcery + Precision with Presence of Mind and Coup de Grace if the enemy team has multiple low-resistance squishies. Electrocute (Domination tree) is a viable alternative if you want more all-in burst at level 2-3, but Aery is the safer default given Vex's slow Q projectile.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Vex beats

  • Dash-reliant skirmisher with dash-through-unit

Vex Doom 'n Gloom passive marks Yasuo when he uses Sweeping Blade (E) dash and her next basic ability fears him. Mistral Bolt (Q) empowered fear interrupts Last Breath (R) windup mid-cast and Looming Darkness (E) slow keeps him out of Wind Wall (W) projectile-block range setup.

    Yasuo
  • Dash-reliant skirmisher with channeled ultimate

Vex Doom 'n Gloom passive marks Yone when Mortal Steel (Q) third-cast knock-up dash or Fate Sealed (R) dash trigger near her. Empowered Mistral Bolt (Q) fears him mid-combo and Looming Darkness (E) slow chains him during Soul Unbound (E) snapshot return path.

    Yone
  • Reset-based AD assassin with shadow dashes

Zed Death Mark (R) dash and Living Shadow (W) swap path both proc Doom 'n Gloom passive mark on entry, and Vex empowered Mistral Bolt (Q) fears him mid-combo. Shadow Surge (R) locks onto him once Death Mark commits and the takedown reset chains into a second pickoff.

    Zed
  • Reset-based AP assassin with stealth dash

Akali Shuriken Flip (E) dash and Perfect Execution (R) two-stage dash both proc Doom 'n Gloom passive mark on entry, and Vex empowered Mistral Bolt (Q) fears her mid-combo. Twilight Shroud (W) invisibility cannot cancel the fear and Shadow Surge (R) locks onto her dive.

    Akali
  • Dash-reliant skirmishers

Vex counters Sylas mid — Sylas Abscond / Abduct (E) dash triggers Doom 'n Gloom mark + fear; without dash Sylas's Kingslayer (W) heal can't sustain through Vex E + Q burst.

    Sylas

Champions that beat Vex

  • Long-range artillery AP mage

Xerath Arcanopulse (Q) fully charged out-ranges Vex Mistral Bolt (Q) 1200 and Looming Darkness (E) 800, so she has no dash to close the gap and eats poke every wave. Rite of the Arcane (R) snipes from off-screen and Shocking Orb (E) stuns her if she steps up to commit.

    Xerath
  • Long-range artillery AP mage

Vel'Koz Plasma Fission (Q) splits around minions and Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) reaches 1575, out-ranging Vex Mistral Bolt (Q) 1200 and Looming Darkness (E) 800, and she has no dash to close the gap. Tectonic Disruption (E) knock-up cancels her Mistral Bolt (Q) cast.

    Vel Koz
  • Targeted hard-CC AP mage with global ultimate

Twisted Fate Pick a Card (W) gold-card stun is a point-and-click lock that bypasses Doom 'n Gloom passive because it is not a dash, so the engage lands cleanly and her Personal Space (W) never gets the chance to peel.

    Twisted Fate
  • Targeted hard-CC AP mage with stun stacks

Annie Pyromania passive every fourth spell stuns through Summon Tibbers (R) point-and-click target, bypassing Doom 'n Gloom passive because it is not a dash, so the engage lands and Personal Space (W) never peels. Disintegrate (Q) plus Incinerate (W) bursts her low HP fast.

    Annie
  • Hard-CC AP mage with self-stasis ultimate

Lissandra Frozen Tomb (R) lands point-blank without a dash, bypassing Doom 'n Gloom passive trigger. Ring of Frost (W) root locks Vex mid Mistral Bolt (Q) cast and Glacial Path (E) does not trigger her passive because the claw projects before the dash, denying her self-peel fear.

    Lissandra

Key matchups

  • Yasuo / Yone: Free lane until they hit level 3. They want to E dash through your minions to engage (start the fight by closing the gap) — every dash triggers Doom 'n Gloom, so hold your Q as your fear ability and punish each gap-close. Bait Wind Wall with a free E, then commit your Q on the recovery frame.
  • Zed: Tough fight but playable. Hold W for his R dash-in to interrupt the marker, save Flash for his ult, and rush Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass as a second item. Never push past river without vision.
  • Xerath: Hardest matchup in the pool. He out-ranges you with a fully charged Q. Hug your minions to break vision on his skillshots, give up cs you cannot safely take, and look for a level 6 R flank because he has no escape — that one all-in often decides the lane.
  • Akali: Diving threat at level 6. She Shuriken Flip dashes in, which is exactly what your passive wants. Wait for her W shroud to pop, then E the shroud edge to slow and reveal — your empowered Q fears her mid-combo if Gloomy is up.
  • Orianna: Even matchup, decided by team fights. Don't auto-attack trade in lane; her ball shield + Luden's Echo Luden's Echo wins short trades. Wait for her E ball to be far from her, then E + Q her unshielded.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: With one point in Q plus the W you started at 1, you have a self-peel + a poke. Your first big level-2 trade comes when the enemy walks up to last-hit a low caster minion: E under them, Q through the Gloom for amplified damage. With E back every 12 seconds you get that window roughly once per wave, so a missed cast costs you one poke rotation, not the whole lane phase.
  • Level 6: First Shadow Surge unlocks ganks from your jungler and solo kills. If the enemy is at half HP, R them from screen-edge range, recast to dash in, and chain E + Q for the kill — the takedown resets R, letting you immediately chase a second target.
  • Luden's Echo Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 12-14): First real burst spike. The E + Q combo deletes a 1300 HP squishy if you land E under them and Q clips through the Gloom zone.
  • Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 26-30): Your R + Q one-shots squishies that have not built a single Magic Resist item. Force objective fights at this timing — Drake or Baron — because your team-fight value peaks here.

Common mistakes

  • Throwing Q before E. Mistral Bolt's empowered damage comes from clipping a target who has Gloom on them. If you Q before E, you lose the bonus damage and waste the only fast-cycle damage spell you have. Order is always E → Q.
  • W without a reason. Personal Space is a tiny shield on a 12+ second cooldown that only damages enemies in melee range. Don't burn it on cooldown for poke — save it for the moment an assassin lands on top of you, or for Doom 'n Gloom trigger when you know an engage is coming.
  • Burning R on the first available target. R has a 140s cooldown at rank 1 and resets only on takedown. If you fire it at a healthy frontline tank, you have no follow-up and no reset. Save it for a squishy under ~60% HP.
  • Standing in front of your minion wave to E. Looming Darkness has a slow travel time. If you cast it from in front of your minions you eat free skillshots (abilities you have to aim and the enemy has to dodge) from the enemy (Xerath Q, Vel'Koz Q, Zoe E). Always step behind your wave to cast.
  • Picking Vex into long-range poke. Pre-game decision: if the draft has Xerath + Lux or Vel'Koz, switch picks. Once locked, you cannot mechanic your way out — every CS you take inside their range costs HP you can't trade back.

Advanced tip

The Doom 'n Gloom timing bait: once Gloomy is up (passive icon glowing), the enemy laner can see it on your character. Skilled opponents will hold their dashes until the passive fades. Counter this by walking into them as if you're about to commit an all-in — most players panic-dash to disengage the moment you cross their threat range, and that panic dash is exactly the trigger you want. Your empowered ability then fears them and you reset the trade by E + Q through the fear animation. This trick wins lane against any dash-reliant champion because their habit fires faster than their patience.
