Precision primary: Lethal Tempo turns Spray and Pray into a real DPS button; Triumph refunds HP on takedowns during teamfights, Legend: Alacrity pushes Q-ambush attack speed higher, Coup de Grace finishes low-HP carries surviving Contaminate.
Domination secondary: Taste of Blood adds free poke heal on your W slow procs in lane, and Relentless Hunter scales out-of-combat move speed for ambush approaches when you have no dash to close the gap.
Against heavy poke teams (xerath, ziggs, varus), swap Domination to Resolve with Second Wind (slow HP regen on damage taken) and Overgrowth (bonus max HP at later minute marks) to survive the lane.
Win Condition
Stack Deadly Venom on the back line during chaos, then unload Spray and Pray from inside the enemy formation once they have committed to the front line. Statikk Shiv plus Infinity Edge is the breakpoint.
Weakness
No dash, no blink, weakest first 10 minutes of any marksman. If you get caught before R unloads, your team has no carry — divers and assassins delete you before stealth comes back online.
Overview
Twitch is the textbook stealth hypercarry marksman: invisible at range, weak for the first ten minutes, and game-ending the moment his first two attack-speed items come online. Deadly Venom (P) stacks true damage on every basic attack (up to 6 stacks); Contaminate (E) detonates every stack on every poisoned enemy in a 1200-unit radius. Ambush (Q) is what makes him different from every other ADC: he goes invisible out of vision, walks to a flanking position, and re-emerges with bonus attack speed. Spray and Pray (R) turns his basic attacks into piercing bolts — fire it from inside a clumped enemy team and every shot hits 3-5 targets at once.
The game plan: survive lane with Venom Cask (W) poke, hit Statikk Shiv plus Berserker's Greaves around minute 11-13, then play as an ambush flanker. Park in a side bush with Ambush ready, wait for the enemy to commit forward, then walk into their back line and pop R. Skill expression sits in Ambush timing (oracle lens and sweepers reveal you), Venom Cask placement (slow + 2 stacks set up Contaminate), and R angle (firing from behind the back line is roughly 3x the value of firing from your own front).
Recommended Build
Starting items: Doran's Blade + 1 Health Potion (450 + 50 = the full 500 gold you start with). Doran's Blade is the safer pick because Twitch's lane is a survive-to-spike marathon, and the bonus HP plus on-hit damage stacks Deadly Venom faster than the lifesteal alternatives.
Core items (in order):
Statikk Shiv — first-item rush. Energized is a counter, not a fixed attack number: you need 100 stacks, each basic attack gives 15 with this item (6 base plus 9 from its Electroshock passive) and every 24 units you walk adds 1 more. Standing still that is about seven attacks; moving between shots it is far fewer, which is why Twitch sees it fire so often while he circles a wave. When it fills, the next attack throws chain lightning for AOE magic damage. Attack speed also brings Lethal Tempo online faster than any alternative.
Berserker's Greaves — attack speed boots, 30% attack speed since 26.16 instead of 25%. On a marksman whose damage is Deadly Venom ticking per stack, that extra 5% is a shorter path to 6 stacks in every trade. Mercury's Treads only against 3+ hard CC threats (tenacity = the stat that shortens stuns and slows on you).
Infinity Edge — your biggest damage spike. Crit damage doubles every piercing bolt during R; the item that flips Twitch from "annoying poke" to "deletes the enemy back line".
Runaan's Hurricane — hypercarry teamfight multiplier. The extra bolts proc on-hit (Deadly Venom, Statikk Shiv energized) on 2 extra targets, so you stack poison on 3 enemies at once and Contaminate detonates on all of them. Riot buffed the bolt damage in 26.16 and raised the move speed to 5% from 4%: on a marksman with no dash, that move speed is peel you carry in an item slot.
Lord Dominik's Regards — 35% armor penetration, a flat figure that never scales. What scales is Giant Slayer: up to 15% bonus damage against a champion, read off their bonus health and capped at 1500 bonus health. Mandatory once a front-liner starts stacking HP.
Situational items:
Mortal Reminder — against heavy healing comps (Soraka, Vladimir, Aatrox). Replace Lord Dominik's if their healing matters more than their HP stacking. Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts the target's healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds) applies the moment your auto-attacks tag a healer.
Phantom Dancer — against assassin or diver pressure (Zed, Samira, Yasuo flank). Spectral Waltz makes you Ghosted (you walk through other units instead of being blocked by them) and the 10% move speed buys the half-second you need to walk out of melee range with no dash.
Bloodthirster — against heavy poke or stalemate lanes. Lifesteal plus overheal shield keeps you topped up between fights.
Wit's End — against AP-heavy enemy teams (2+ mages plus an AP support like Brand or Zyra). On-hit magic damage stacks with Deadly Venom; magic resist keeps you alive long enough to fire R. Read the 26.16 magic resist change the right way round: Twitch now starts on 33 instead of 30 and grows 1.1 per level instead of 1.3, so he is tougher in lane and through mid-game and lands at essentially the same number by level 18 (51.7 against 52.1). Wit's End is still the answer to a magic bot lane, but for the on-hit magic damage it adds, not because the patch made him more fragile.
Guardian Angel — against comps that can lock you down once (Malzahar R suppression, Nautilus chain CC). The revive turns one failed positioning into a second teamfight chance.
Boots:
Berserker's Greaves is default. Mercury's Treads against heavy AP CC; Plated Steelcaps against double-AD threats (two physical damage threats like Yasuo + Caitlyn).
Skill order: Max E first (Contaminate is your big AOE damage button and ramps hard on rank), W second (Venom Cask cooldown for poke and stack setup), Q last (Ambush utility scales with item attack speed, not with rank). Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Precision with Lethal Tempo, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Coup de Grace. Secondary Domination with Taste of Blood and Relentless Hunter, or Resolve with Second Wind and Overgrowth against poke. Stat shards: Attack Speed / Adaptive Force / Health.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Twitch beats
Immobile late-scaling marksman
Jinx has no dash and her Switcheroo! Q rocket form scales far less with bonus attack speed. Ambush Q stealths Twitch into auto-attack range from fog, Contaminate E stack burst deletes her before Get Excited! passive move-speed reset can fire.
JinxImmobile late-scaling marksman
Aphelios has no dash and his E slot is only a queue, showing the next gun rather than letting him choose it. Ambush Q stealths Twitch into auto-attack range from fog, Contaminate E stack burst melts him through Moonlight Vigil R.
ApheliosImmobile late-scaling marksman
Senna has no dash and Curse of the Black Mist E camouflage is short and conditional. Ambush Q stealths Twitch from fog past her invisibility timing, Contaminate E stack burst lands during Piercing Darkness Q cast animation.
SennaHP-stacking tank
Sion's Glory in Death passive reanimates him with rapidly decaying health. Contaminate E per-stack burst plus Lord Dominik's Regards turn his bar into a free target, Spray and Pray R chains across his Unstoppable Onslaught R charge.
SionHP-stacking tank
Cho'Gath's Feast R stacks pile raw max health on him, inflating the exact bar Contaminate E per-stack burst shreds in one 6-stack cast. Carnivore passive heal cannot keep up with Deadly Venom passive ramping ticks, Rupture Q knockup is dodged via Ambush Q stealth re-entry.
Cho Gath
Champions that beat Twitch
Early-pressure laning marksman
Draven out-trades Twitch in the level 1-6 window before Deadly Venom passive can stack 6 — Spinning Axe Q auto-empowers chunk his low base HP. League of Draven passive bonus gold snowballs early items, Blood Rush W chases Ambush Q stealth angles.
DravenEarly-pressure laning marksman
Lucian out-trades Twitch in the level 1-6 window before Deadly Venom passive can stack 6 — Lightslinger passive double-shot plus Relentless Pursuit E gap-close lets him burst Twitch before Ambush Q stealth comes online.
LucianEarly-pressure laning marksman
Caitlyn out-ranges Twitch by 100 units, 650 against 550, and her Yordle Snap Trap W plus Piltover Peacemaker Q line control the brush angle Ambush Q relies on. Headshot passive procs out-trade Deadly Venom ramping, 90 Caliber Net E slows him while the recoil carries her away.
CaitlynMobile assassin who dives the back-line
Twitch has no dash and no instant CC against gap-closers. Zed's Death Mark R lands on his back-line spot before Ambush Q can refresh stealth, Living Shadow W swap closes the gap, Razor Shuriken Q chip pre-bursts him.
ZedMobile diver who deletes channels
Samira's Wild Rush E dash plus Inferno Trigger R delete Twitch inside his Spray and Pray R window before the piercing autos can finish. Daredevil Impulse passive ramps her style rank on every Flair Q proc, Blade Whirl W destroys the Venom Cask W missile before it lands.

Key matchups
- Draven: Heavily Twitch-unfavored levels 1-6. His Spinning Axe (Q) out-trades you at every step. Don't fight him pre-3; freeze the wave near your turret (let his minions stack so he has to overextend to last-hit), hit level 6 with R up, then look for jungle dives only when he overextends. Once you have
Statikk Shiv the matchup flips: Ambush around his last-hit position and unload R. - Caitlyn: Unfavored. She outranges your basic attacks and bullies the lane with Q + Yordle Snap Trap (W) setups. Stand behind minions, dodge sideways out of her Q line, and never step on a bush she has been sitting in (likely traps). Survive to two items — her teamfight scaling falls off hard against your R AOE.
- Lucian: Unfavored, especially with a Nami support. Respect his level 3 all-in (passive double-shot + Q dash + W speed-up). Hold Flash as a self-peel; never burn it on poke. Get to
Statikk Shiv without dying and the lane stabilizes. - Jinx: Favored after two items. Same "no dash, hypercarry" profile but you have stealth ambush and she does not. Look for an Ambush flank during a Drake skirmish — she has no answer to R fired from behind her position.
- Ezreal: Even, slight Twitch favor late. His Arcane Shift (E) dash counters most ambushes 1v1, but his short auto-attack range means he cannot kite a Twitch who closed the gap with stealth. Bait his E with a fake Venom Cask approach, then Ambush in the second after it goes on cooldown.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2: With one point in W and E, you can poke the enemy ADC for ~15% HP every wave — W applies one stack of Deadly Venom on impact and another for each second they stay in the cloud, E detonates whatever stuck. The only level where Twitch wins a trade pre-item.
- Level 6: First Spray and Pray unlocks dive pressure. If the enemy ADC steps too far forward, Ambush in from the bush, stack 6 Deadly Venom with R bolts, then E for the detonation. The full combo deletes a 1600-HP target in under 2 seconds.
Statikk Shiv completion (~ minute 11-13): First real spike. Lethal Tempo stacks hit the soft cap inside one combo, and once the Energized counter is full the next attack chains lightning across the wave — charge it by moving between shots while you shove, not by standing still and hitting. Buy the boots on the same back: at 30% attack speed they now match Statikk Shiv's own attack speed for a third of the gold. Start looking for Ambush flanks around Drake.
Infinity Edge +
Runaan's Hurricane online (~ minute 24-28): The hypercarry breakpoint. Crit bolts during R hit 3 targets at once, and a single Ambush into a clumped team wins a teamfight in one rotation.
Common mistakes
- Using Ambush as an escape. Ambush has a long cast time and oracle lens (a sweeping trinket that reveals stealth) plus control wards cancel it on the spot. Stealth is for entering fights from a flank angle, not surviving one — your only escape if caught is Flash and your support's peel.
- Firing R from your own back line. Twitch's R bolts pierce in a straight line from where he stands. From the back, the bolts hit the front-line tank first and the squishies (champions with low defenses, like ADCs and most mages) behind get nothing. Walk forward, then fire — even a half-step into the enemy formation triples the damage.
- Stacking Deadly Venom on the tank. Contaminate hits every poisoned target in 1200 units, so one stacking auto-attack on the back line plus Venom Cask covers the rest. Wasting your auto-attack window on the front-line bruiser leaves the back line clean and your damage drops by 60%.
- Greedy positioning at Baron. A revealed Twitch in the Baron pit cannot Ambush back out — the pit is warded and the smite contest means oracle lens is up. If your team commits, fire R and accept death; never try to walk out invisible from a contested objective.
- Building Bloodthirster first by default. Bloodthirster gives sustain but no crit and no attack speed. Twitch's damage comes from Lethal Tempo plus crit on R bolts — lifesteal first delays Infinity Edge by 8 minutes and you never hit the hypercarry breakpoint in time.
Advanced tip
Practice the bush-Ambush-R flank during skirmishes around Drake and Rift Herald. The pattern: park in the side bush opposite the objective with Ambush ready, wait for the enemy team to commit to the pit, then walk through fog into a flanking position behind their back line. Cast Ambush only after you have walked most of the angle — the camouflage timer is short, and if you stealth from your own side the timer expires before you reach a useful position. The frame the enemy commits is your trigger: pop R, walk into the densest cluster of squishies, fire 4-5 piercing bolts, then Contaminate as your exit. The Ambush reset on takedown gives you a second stealth to walk out invisible. The skill ceiling is the wall-walk timing: too early and camouflage expires inside their vision web, too late and the fight is over before you arrive.
