Conqueror stacks on every auto (he is a melee carry: damage comes from basics not abilities), giving the bonus-AD spike that wins extended 1v1s by minute 12. Triumph refills HP on takedown — perfect for Undying Rage all-ins. Coup de Grace adds 8% damage under 40% HP.
Resolve secondary: Bone Plating cuts 30 to 60 damage (by level) off the next 3 hits within 1.5s, blunting pre-6 trade burst. Revitalize gives 5% heal and shield power, and another 10% on targets below 40% health, which is where Bloodlust and Undying Rage put you every fight.
Against burst assassins on the enemy team (Zed, Talon, Rengar) swap Resolve for Sorcery with Absolute Focus (bonus AD above 70% HP, fed by your hit-and-run lane) + Gathering Storm (scaling AD past minute 25). Trades pre-6 safety for late scaling.
Win Condition
Stay alive past minute 8 with Undying Rage, then crit-stack the splitpush (a 1v1 side-lane attacker who forces the enemy to respond): take a side tower every R cycle while your team plays 4v4 around objectives.
Weakness
Crumbles in early teamfights without Infinity Edge. Hard-countered by ranged laners (Vayne, Kayle, Gangplank) and by hard-CC that lands the moment Undying Rage expires (Pantheon stun, Ornn R).
Overview
Tryndamere is a melee crit-carry top laner whose entire identity is built around one button: Undying Rage (R). For 5 seconds he cannot die — his HP holds at 1 no matter the damage. That window is the longest "you cannot kill me" tool in the game: stack crit on basic attacks, run at the enemy carry, press R the instant you reach lethal HP, kill the carry, then Spinning Slash (E) out as the ult expires. He has no shields and no escape — just rage, autos, and a death timer he cheats every 80 seconds at max rank.
His game plan is splitpush (pressuring a side lane alone so the enemy must send 1-2 players to stop you while your team plays 4v4 elsewhere) plus controlled all-ins. Win lane against an immobile melee bruiser at level 2-3, then take side waves on repeat once Infinity Edge is online. Skill expression lives in two places: the R timing (press it AFTER you take a lethal hit, not before — the ult does nothing if your HP is full), and the E wall-jump (Spinning Slash can hop terrain at the right angle to escape ganks).
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Doran's Blade +
Health Potion. Against ranged top lanes (Teemo, Quinn, Gnar, Kennen) swap to
Doran's Shield for HP and regen-on-hit to soak the harass (poke at range to chip HP without committing).
Core items (in order):
Navori Flickerblade — first crit spike. Every attack, not just crits, removes 15% of Spinning Slash's remaining cooldown. On top of that the ability has its own reduction: 0.75 seconds per critical strike, 1.5 against champions. The two stack, which is why Navori comes first — it gives you the dash you need to stick on a fleeing carry or to wall-jump out of a gank.
Berserker's Greaves — Attack Speed (the rate at which you swing your basic attacks). Patch 26.16 raised the boots from 25% to 30% Attack Speed, and on a champion whose damage is entirely basic attacks that 5% is the whole chain: more swings = more crits = more Fury = more Conqueror stacks = more healing from Bloodlust.
Infinity Edge — the breakpoint where Tryndamere stops being a duelist and becomes a 1-shot threat to squishies (low-defense damage dealers like ADCs or mages). Crits go from 200% to 230% damage, and the item also hands you 75 Attack Damage and 25% crit chance, which is the bigger half of the spike. This is what turns a 50/50 1v1 into a 30-second kill timer on any squishy you reach.
Lord Dominik's Regards — armor pen + bonus damage to high-HP targets. Once the enemy front line starts stacking armor, this is what lets your autos still hurt a Sion or a Malphite in the late teamfight.
Bloodthirster — lifesteal (heal from your damage) + an overcap shield (extra HP-like buffer once lifesteal is maxed). Doubles the value of every splitpush trade — you walk back to lane at full HP without recalling.
Situational items:
Mortal Reminder — replaces Lord Dominik's vs heavy healing (Vladimir's Transfusion, Aatrox's Deathbringer Stance, Soraka, Yuumi). Applies Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts healing by 40%) on every auto.
Guardian Angel — vs heavy burst (a lot of damage packed into 1-2 seconds) comps (Zed, LeBlanc, Talon). Revive saves you when your Undying Rage already expired in the same fight.
Phantom Dancer — vs poke (long-range chip damage) and skirmish (short, repeated small fights) comps (Lucian, Kalista, Yasuo). 65% Attack Speed, 25% crit and 10% Move Speed, plus Spectral Waltz, which lets you walk through units. On a champion with one dash, walking through the front line is the sticking tool.
Black Cleaver — vs squads with two or more frontline bruisers (Sion, Ornn, Malphite). Any physical damage you deal to a champion cuts 6% of their Armor for 6 seconds, up to 5 stacks, so 30% at full stacks — and the shred is visible to your whole team, so every ally hitting that tank deals more damage. Patch 26.16 raised it to 45 AD (from 40). The same patch split its Move Speed effect between melee and ranged users, but the melee side stayed at 20: nothing changed for Tryndamere there, it is ranged champions who dropped to 10. That speed burst still keeps you glued to a fleeing bruiser while Spinning Slash (E) is down. Still a situational anti-armor buy.
Boots:
Berserker's Greaves is default for Attack Speed.
Plated Steelcaps swap in vs heavy AD comps (Zed, Talon, Vayne, Kalista) — armor plus a 10% cut to the damage you take from basic attacks.
Skill order: Max Q first (Bloodlust gives bigger AD and bigger heals per rank). Max E second (lower Spinning Slash cooldown, more dashes). Max W last. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16. Open level 1 with E for the gap-close, W at level 2 for the slow-on-back, Q at level 3 for the heal.
Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Coup de Grace. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating and Revitalize. Stat shards: Attack Speed / Adaptive Force / Health Scaling.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Tryndamere beats
Immobile tank without sustain
Undying Rage hard-counters Malphite's burst — Unstoppable Force R does little while Tryndamere sits at 1 HP for 5s. Watch Ground Slam E instead — it slows attack speed, the only stat that matters here. Granite Shield absorbs up to 10% max health, wasting early swings.
MalphiteImmobile melee bruiser without sustain
Renekton's Dominus R lasts 15 seconds, three times Undying Rage's 5 — do not wait it out, win inside his 5-second immunity window instead. Slice and Dice E cannot escape Spinning Slash E chase, and Ruthless Predator W's stun costs him nothing since he cannot die.
RenektonImmobile melee bruiser without sustain
Demacian Justice (R) is an execute, and Undying Rage (R) holds Tryndamere at 1 HP instead of zero, so the kill never fires. Decisive Strike (Q) wastes its empowered hit in that window, and standing in Judgment (E) just rebuilds Battle Fury's crit chance.
GarenImmobile melee bruiser without sustain
Noxian Guillotine (R) is an execute too, and Undying Rage (R) floors him at 1 HP no matter his Hemorrhage stacks. Decimate (Q)'s outer ring cannot out-damage Bloodlust (Q)'s healing, and Apprehend (E) only pulls him to melee, exactly where Spinning Slash (E) dashes back out of.
DariusSplitpush rival without on-demand all-in
Tryndamere out-duels Singed 1v1, but Mega Adhesive W does not just slow — it grounds, disabling Spinning Slash E, so never dash or exit through the puddle. Poison Trail Q cannot out-ramp Bloodlust Q, and Fling E throws him behind Singed, rooting him only in the adhesive.
Singed
Champions that beat Tryndamere
Ranged scaler who out-pokes
Silver Bolts (W) deals true damage every third hit, scaled to his Health, so she is ready the instant Undying Rage (R) drops. Final Hour (R) turns each Tumble (Q) into invisibility breaking a Spinning Slash (E) chase, and Condemn (E) walls him for a stun he cannot dash from.
VayneRanged scaler who out-scales
Kayle's Divine Judgment R makes her invulnerable the moment Tryndamere commits Undying Rage, neutralizing his all-in. The lane closes early — Divine Ascent turns her ranged at level 6 (525 range, 625 at 16), so kill her levels 1-5. Radiant Blast Q slow cannot be dashed through.
KayleRanged scaler who out-pokes
Gangplank's Parrrley Q reaches 625, which Spinning Slash E (650) can answer; the real threat is Powder Keg E, placed up to 1000 away and detonated from behind for chip you cannot reach. Trial by Fire burns melee exchanges, Remove Scurvy W cleanses Mocking Shout W slow and heals.
GangplankDuelist with self-peel
Jax's Counter Strike E dodges every Tryndamere auto during the 2-second active window and stuns him back on re-cast — Conqueror keystone stacks drop to zero, crit DPS collapses.
JaxDuelist with self-peel
Riposte (W) absorbs the Spinning Slash (E) hit and answers with a slow; she only stuns if she parries crowd control, which Tryndamere lacks. Lunge (Q) then walks her around him faster than he repositions, and Bladework (E)'s slow keeps his approach short of attack range.

Key matchups
- Malphite: Hard early-game favor for you, but watch his Unstoppable Force (R) post-6. Save Undying Rage for the moment AFTER his ult connects, not before. If you ult preemptively, his R lands the second yours expires. Trade short, walk out before he stacks Granite Shield back.
- Renekton: Pre-6 he chunks you with Cull the Meek (Q) + Ruthless Predator (W) stun. Stay on the side of the wave, use Spinning Slash only to dodge his W stun, not to engage. Post-6 you flip, but not because your R outlasts his 15-second Dominus burst: you flip because your 5 seconds of immunity are the ones where his Fury-empowered burst would otherwise kill you.
- Fiora: Watch for Riposte (W). Never dash Spinning Slash (E) into it — she eats the damage of the whole parry window and answers with a 25% slow, which on a champion with one gap-closer is enough to lose the trade. She only stuns if she parries actual crowd control, which you do not have. Trade only on auto-attacks: Duelist's Dance (P) shows one Vital at a time, and the four at once are Grand Challenge (R), which is the ability you walk away from.
- Kennen: Hard ranged matchup. Mark of the Storm (P) stuns you after any three ability hits, from level 1. What changes at 6 is Slicing Maelstrom (R), which stacks all three on its own. Buy
Doran's Shield, sit under tower, farm with Spinning Slash on the back-line minions only. Wait for jungler ganks. - Vayne: Pre-6 even, post-6 hard for you. Silver Bolts does true damage (damage that ignores armor and Magic Resist) on the third consecutive hit; with Attack Speed she finishes that stack inside your R window. Condemn (E) knocks you back when you commit. Hold E for the Tumble (Q) roll, not to engage.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3: With E + W + Q you have the full kit. Walk up, E in, W the back-turn slow, auto twice, E out on the cooldown. Most melee tops cannot answer the level 3 all-in (commit fully to a kill attempt).
- Level 6: Undying Rage unlocks the all-in window: one 5-second window every 120 seconds at rank 1. Use the first one before the enemy has learned to walk away instead of committing.
Navori Flickerblade completion (~ minute 11-13): Every attack now shaves 15% off the remaining Spinning Slash cooldown, and every crit on a champion takes another 1.5 seconds off it. Your stickiness explodes: split a side lane, force a 2v1 response, E out over a wall when the enemy commits, E back in shortly after.
Infinity Edge online (~ minute 24-27): Crits become a 1-shot threat. Your splitpush becomes uncontestable — the enemy must send 2 players to stop you, opening the 4v4 elsewhere where your team should be at Drake or Baron.
Common mistakes
- Pressing Undying Rage too early. If you R at 40% HP, the ult does nothing for the first 4 seconds — you wasted 4/5 of the duration. Wait until you take a hit that would otherwise kill you, then R. The visual cue: your HP bar flashing red below 10%.
- Wasting Spinning Slash to engage instead of saving it for the exit. E is your only mobility. Walk up to autos first, E only when committed or when you need to dodge a key skillshot. A Tryndamere with E on cooldown is a Tryndamere who dies to any gank.
- Splitpushing without vision. Side lane Tryndamere with no wards is a free kill for any jungler with a hard-CC ult (crowd control — stuns, roots, knockups; Sejuani, Wukong, Hecarim). Drop a control ward on the side bush before pushing past river.
- Teamfighting from the front line. Tryndamere is not a tank. In a 5v5 walk around the side, wait for the engage (the enemy committing to start the fight), then dive (jump on) the back-line carry. R when you take the first CC, kill the ADC, E out.
- Recalling on every wave during splitpush. Bloodthirster heals you from autos: a side-lane Tryndamere can full-heal on 1 minion wave. Stay on the map, take the next tower plate, recall only when both Undying Rage AND Spinning Slash are down.
Advanced tip
The Spinning Slash wall-jump is the highest-leverage mechanic in the kit. Spinning Slash can cross thin terrain if your initial position and the cast direction align: at the right angle, you hop over a wall instantly. The high-value spots: river wall from top lane to escape a Skarner gank, dragon pit wall to flank from above, baron pit corner to drop into a fight unseen. Practice in custom games — start at the lane brush, dash toward a specific wall pixel, repeat until the hop is reliable. Once you own 3-4 wall-jump lines per map, a Tryndamere who looks dead on the minimap is a Tryndamere who shows up behind the enemy carry 2 seconds later.
