Resolve primary: Aftershock triggers on Q-stun and W knock-up, giving armor/MR plus AOE damage on engage. Font of Life heals you and the lowest-health nearby ally on immobilise; Bone Plating blunts the first 3 abilities; Unflinching gives 10 armor and MR while crowd controlled.
Inspiration secondary: Magical Footwear gives free base boots at minute 12 (300 gold saved for the Solstice Sleigh power spike) and Cosmic Insight cuts cooldowns on summoner spells and item actives — important for Flash + Exhaust uptime in 2v2 lane skirmishes.
If you face an enchanter support without hard CC (Soraka, Sona, Janna) instead of a tank, swap Inspiration for Sorcery secondary with Manaflow Band (sustains your Q spam in lane) and Transcendence (10 ability haste plus the cooldown refresh on takedown).
Win Condition
Soak damage for your ADC, look for picks with Q from fog, and turn the engage with W knock-up. R as a save button outweighs any damage option in your kit.
Weakness
No real disengage and a telegraphed W landing zone that the enemy can dodge. R is a long cooldown: if it is down your ADC has no safety net against dives.
Overview
Tahm Kench is a tank support (a melee champion built to soak damage and lock down enemies, not to deal damage himself) whose entire job is being the bouncer between your ADC and the enemy team. He has two engage tools (Q slow to set up, W AOE knock-up to commit) and one save tool (R swallows your ally and walks them out of danger). Trade-off: he is huge, slow, and obvious — the enemy always sees him coming.
His game plan splits into two phases. Level 1-5: poke with Q to chip the enemy ADC and farm Acquired Taste stacks; at the third stack Q lands as a stun and you engage with W. Level 6+: R is a panic button for your ADC. In teamfights, you are either eating an enemy carry to remove them from the fight or eating your own carry to save them — never both, and never to "reposition" yourself.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
World Atlas — the support starter that upgrades on gold thresholds, not on a clock: Runic Compass after it has generated 400 gold, Bounty of Worlds after another 800, both free.
Stealth Ward trinket completes your starter loadout.
Core items (in order):
World Atlas → upgrades to Bounty of Worlds and finally to
Solstice Sleigh — the tank-engage completion. Slowing or immobilising a champion near an ally heals both of you and grants 20% decaying move speed for 2.5 seconds; perfect for chaining your W knock-up into ADC kite follow-up.
Knight's Vow — bind it to your ADC. You absorb 14% of the damage they take and heal for 12% of the damage they deal to champions. Stacks Tahm's "I take the hit, you survive" identity to absurd levels.
Spirit Visage — magic resist, HP, ability haste, and a +25% boost to all healing and shielding received. Buffs Tongue Lash self-heal, Thick Skin shield, Knight's Vow incoming heal share, and any ADC heal cast on you (Soraka W, Sona W).
Force of Nature — versus AP-heavy enemy comps. After you take magic damage from champions 8 times it adds 70 magic resist and 6% bonus move speed on top of its own stats. Without this, AP burst (Brand, Annie, Lux ulti) bypasses your HP wall.
Situational items:
Locket of the Iron Solari — versus AOE engage compositions (Malphite ulti + Yasuo ulti, Wukong ulti, Kennen ulti). The active drops a 290-360 shield on every nearby ally exactly as their wombo lands ("wombo combo" = a chained AOE all-in).
Zeke's Convergence — versus teams you have to stand on top of. Casting Devour summons Frostfire Tempest, a 5-second storm that deals 30 magic damage per second and slows enemies by 30%.
Thornmail — versus basic-attack-heavy enemy carries (Vayne, Master Yi, Tryndamere). Grievous wounds (a -40% healing debuff) shuts down their lifesteal during the duel.
Kaenic Rookern — versus single-target AP burst (Brand support, Annie support, Karthus ulti). The big magic shield from the passive absorbs one full burst combo.
Boots:
Mercury's Treads as default (most bot lanes have hard CC support);
Plated Steelcaps versus heavy AD comps (Draven, Caitlyn, Trundle jungle).
Skill order: Max Q first (poke, slow, stack tool — your main pressure tool in lane), W second (shorter cooldown, longer landing range, more damage), E last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Resolve with Aftershock keystone — after immobilising an enemy with Q stun or W knock-up, you get a burst of armor/MR plus an AOE damage proc. Font of Life heals you and the lowest-health nearby ally each time you immobilise an enemy. Bone Plating blunts the first 3 enemy hits in a trade. Unflinching gives 10 armor and magic resist while you are crowd controlled and for 2 seconds after. Secondary Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free base boots at minute 12, 45 seconds sooner per takedown, saving the 300 gold of Boots) and Cosmic Insight (cuts cooldowns on summoner spells and item actives). Stat shards: Adaptive Force, Health Scaling, Health.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions TahmKench beats
Aggressive ADC without a built-in dash
Draven needs to walk forward to catch Spinning Axes and has only Stand Aside as a one-hit positional tool. Tahm's Tongue Lash slow stacks An Acquired Taste from outside the axe-catch range, the 3-stack stun lands the instant Draven steps to a falling axe.
DravenAggressive ADC without a built-in dash
Miss Fortune commits Bullet Time as a stationary channel and has no dash to break out. Tahm walks Tongue Lash poke into her during Strut downtime, the 3-stack stun freezes her mid-channel.
Miss FortuneAggressive ADC without a built-in dash
Kai'Sa pre-Icathian Rain evolved spike has no dash — Killer Instinct R needs charges from a Void Seeker hit first. Tahm Tongue Lash slows her on every wave approach, the 3-stack stun lands before she can stack passive plasma on the support.
KaisaShort-trade ADC who commits one combo
Lucian commits Relentless Pursuit E as his only repositioning tool and burns it for the Ardent Blaze trade. Tahm's Abyssal Dive W knocks him up the instant the E dash ends, the 3-stack Tongue Lash stun catches him in the air.
LucianShort-trade ADC who commits one combo
Tristana commits Rocket Jump W as both engage and escape and it goes on cooldown after a single jump. Tahm Abyssal Dive lands as she touches ground, the 3-stack Tongue Lash stun freezes her before Explosive Charge detonates.
Tristana
Champions that beat TahmKench
Tank engage support with longer-range CC
Leona's Zenith Blade E covers 875 units and drags her onto Tahm the moment he steps up, the attached immobilise holds him in place, and Shield of Daybreak Q chains a second stun through Bone Plating.
LeonaTank engage support with longer-range CC
Nautilus's Dredge Line Q hook pulls Tahm from 1150 units, further than Abyssal Dive reaches before rank 4, and drags him into Riptide E AOE slow. Depth Charge R chains a knock-up stun on landing.
NautilusEnchanter who cleanses or shields through CC
Lulu's Whimsy W polymorph turns Tahm into a critter mid Tongue Lash windup, cancelling the cast and the stack chain. Wild Growth R knocks up the ally he dove onto and buffs its health, and Help, Pix! E shields the ADC through his follow-up damage.
LuluEnchanter who cleanses or shields through CC
Milio's Breath of Life R cleanses the slow from Tongue Lash and hands the whole bot lane tenacity right as the 3-stack stun lands, breaking Tahm's only kill setup in lane. Cozy Campfire W heal-zone uptime then out-sustains his sustained trade pressure across the next two waves.
MilioLong-range CC mage with skillshot lockdown
Morgana's Dark Binding Q roots from 1250 units, further than Abyssal Dive reaches at any rank, so it lands before Tahm can dive in — and he has no dash to sidestep the slow projectile.
Morgana
Key matchups
- Leona: Hard matchup. Her Zenith Blade (E dash + immobilise) closes 875 units the moment you step up, and Solar Flare (her ulti stun) hits before Aftershock can proc to mitigate. Stand 2 minion-widths behind your ADC; let her commit engage first, then W in to peel and burn her cooldowns. Save R for after her Solar Flare lands.
- Pyke: Skill matchup. His Bone Skewer (Q hook) out-ranges your Tongue Lash, but his Phantom Undertow (E dash that leaves a stunning phantom behind him) is dodgeable on telegraph (the dark stripe of water on the ground). Bone Plating eats the burst of his Q + E combo; W onto him after he ults (Death from Below) — he is locked in animation and cannot dash out.
- Lulu: Bad matchup. Her Whimsy (W polymorph, turns you into a critter that cannot attack or cast) cancels your Q windup and your W casting frame. Wait for her to use W on your ADC for the speed buff (her common opener) — that is your only engage window. Save R for after she Whimsies your ADC to prevent the follow-up.
- Nautilus: Even matchup, edge to him level 1-3. His Dredge Line (Q hook) goes through minions; sit behind your tank wave to break vision on him. After level 6, your R on his ADC is bigger than his R on yours because R-swallow removes a target from his W splash hits.
- Soraka: Favorable. She has no dash and no escape, and Astral Infusion (W) heals her ADC at the cost of her own HP — every cast lowers her HP and feeds your kill setup. W in on her, 3-stack Q for the stun, your ADC follows up. She has no flash range advantage either.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3 (Q + W + E): Full kit minus R. The W knock-up procs Aftershock, your basic attacks build Acquired Taste, and once the target carries 3 stacks the next Q stuns. First real 2v2 all-in (a fight where both supports + both ADCs commit fully) window.
- Level 6 (R unlocked): First Devour. Versus dive-heavy enemy supports (Leona, Pyke, Nautilus), R now turns their commit into a wasted cooldown by eating your own ADC mid-engage and walking them under tower. Your bot lane stops dying to single-target dives almost overnight.
Solstice Sleigh completion (~ minute 12-14): Lane priority (the ability to leave lane without losing CS) flips. Every slow or knock-up you land near an ally now heals you both and hands out 20% decaying move speed; you can permanently dictate trades.
Knight's Vow online (~ minute 18-22): You soak 14% of the damage your bound ADC takes, and heal for 12% of the damage they deal to champions. Combined with R, your team's carry is functionally unkillable in a teamfight as long as you are alive.
Common mistakes
- Using R on yourself to "escape." R has no self-cast: it targets an ally, or an enemy champion who already carries 3 Acquired Taste stacks. The mistake people make is panicking and eating their ADC just to run away when no enemy threat is on the ADC yet — you just removed your own team's damage from the fight.
- W engaging without your ADC in range. Abyssal Dive telegraphs its landing circle before you re-emerge. If your ADC is 3 screens away, the enemy walks out of the landing zone and you W into a 1v2 where you threaten nothing. Always check your ADC's position before pressing W.
- Spamming Q and missing the stack timing. Acquired Taste stacks fall off if you stop damaging the target, and you reset to 0 without ever getting the stun. Track stacks (icon over the enemy's head): the stun only comes from a Q landed on someone already at 3.
- Building damage items as support. Tahm support scales on HP and resistances, not AP or AD. Liandry's Torment or Riftmaker gives you damage the team does not need and you lose the HP/armor/MR that makes your R-save work.
- Picking Tahm into hard-poke 2v2. Lulu / Karma / Janna with a long-range mage ADC (Caitlyn, Ezreal) bleed your HP from 1100+ range without committing. W is dodgeable on telegraph, Q hits one target. If draft forces it, hold flash and play for jungle ganks.
Advanced tip
Use R on your own ADC pre-emptively, not reactively. Most Tahm supports panic-R when the ADC is already at 10% HP — by then the damage is locked in. Instead, R the moment you see the enemy commit a deterministic combo onto your ADC: when Malphite presses R toward your Jinx, swallow Jinx during the dash animation, before the unstoppable hits her. The R-swallow makes Jinx untargetable for the duration, Malphite's ulti lands on no one, and the engage burns for nothing. This works versus any cast-time engage (Ashe arrow, Sejuani R, Wukong R, Kennen R, Galio R): the rule is you must R before the lock-in damage tick fires, not after.
