Core Abilities

Petricite Burst
Casting a spell stores a charge. The next basic attack whirls his chains for bonus magic damage in a small area. While charged, he gains attack speed.
Chain Lash
Chain Lash
Throws chains in two lines that meet at a targeted spot, slowing on the way out and exploding after a short delay for the main damage.
Kingslayer
Kingslayer
Short lunge onto an enemy. Damages and heals Sylas; healing scales up the lower his own HP and the higher their missing HP.
Abscond / Abduct
Abscond / Abduct
Two-part ability. First cast is a short dash. Recast throws chains in a line, knocking up the first enemy hit and pulling Sylas to them.
Hijack
Hijack
Steals the target enemy champion's ultimate and lets Sylas cast it for one use. Pick your target in champ-select and learn 5 stolen ults per role.

Why these runes

Domination primary: Dark Harvest stacks on every takedown and Sylas farms kills thanks to his W heal in long skirmishes. Taste of Blood adds in-lane sustain, Grisly Mementos stacks trinket haste on takedowns, Ultimate Hunter shortens Hijack for late-game pick pressure.

Why secondary

Sorcery secondary: Manaflow Band fixes his mana problem in lane (his Q + W cost a lot for an early-game caster), Transcendence adds 10 ability haste by level 8 and refunds 20% of his basic cooldowns on takedowns from level 11, so the E reset window comes back faster.

When to switch secondary

Vs heavy poke lanes (Xerath, Vel'Koz, Ziggs) swap Sorcery to Resolve with Second Wind (regen vs ranged harass) and Overgrowth (bonus max health as minions die near you) so you survive to your level 6 Hijack power spike.

Win Condition

Hijack an enemy ultimate that completes your kill pattern (Malphite R for engage, Lux R for execute, Ekko R for safety) and chain your E-Q-W combo into the follow-up, healing through their burst with Kingslayer.

Weakness

Long-range skillshots and hard CC. With no escape past the first E dash, immobile mages with poke (Vel'Koz, Xerath) and point-and-click stuns cancel his all-in before W can heal him back up.

Overview

Sylas is a melee AP bruiser whose entire identity is Hijack (R): he steals the enemy ultimate and casts it for himself, copied with his own AP scaling. That mechanic means the same champion plays differently into every team comp — pick Malphite's ult to engage, Lux's to execute, or Ekko's to revive. Outside of his ult he is a short-range fighter with a dash-and-pull (E), a self-heal lunge (W), and a delayed AOE detonation (Q). The mid lane gives him level-6 access to enemy team comp ults and a short river path to swing skirmishes.

His game plan reads two layers deep: macro is the Hijack target (which enemy ult solves the missing tool in your own kit — engage, execute, or sustain) and micro is the E1-E2-Q-W chain on a target who has burned their escape. Skill expression sits in two places: choosing the right ult to steal in every fight, and threading the Q detonation timing so it overlaps with the slow you applied on E2 — that way you guarantee the explosion lands.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potions. Take Doran's Shield only into ranged poke matchups (Vel'Koz, Xerath, Ziggs) where the HP regen outweighs the missing AP.

Core items (in order):

  1. Hextech Rocketbelt Hextech Rocketbelt — first item spike. The active is a second short dash on top of E1, so you reach the back line on a target who already burned Flash. The 26.14 rework traded 10 ability power for 50 health (60 AP, 350 HP) and put Kindlegem in the recipe in place of Fiendish Codex — a trade Sylas takes better than a burst assassin does, because his damage comes from Petricite Burst autos and Nashor's Tooth on-hit rather than from one AP rotation. Note that the mobility did not come out ahead in the exchange: the same patch raised the Supersonic active from a 40-second cooldown to 50 seconds, a quarter longer between casts, so Abscond/Abduct (E) remains your primary way into the back line and the belt is the follow-up you spend once the fight is already committed.
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration. Default boots; swap to Mercury's Treads against heavy CC.
  3. Nashor's Tooth Nashor's Tooth — attack speed and on-hit magic damage that scales with AP. His Petricite Burst passive procs on every auto, so every Q-W-E sequence triggers an extra empowered hit. This is what makes Sylas a sustained-damage bruiser instead of a one-shot caster.
  4. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game scaling multiplier. The 30% AP amp pumps both his abilities AND the stolen ult, so every Hijack scales harder the later you build it.
  5. Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass — the stasis covers the dive window: you engage, drop your combo, and stasis through the enemy team's burst follow-up so Kingslayer (W) can keep healing you afterwards.
  6. Void Staff Void Staff — buy this the moment any priority enemy completes a Magic Resist item.

Situational items:

  • Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil — vs single-target magic CC that locks your E recast (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun). The shield eats one ability so your dash recast still resolves.
  • Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads — replace Sorcerer's Shoes when the enemy team has 2+ stuns or roots that lock you mid-combo.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — into healing-stacking compositions (Soraka mid, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo top). Caps enemy healing so your W trade doesn't get nullified by their sustain.
  • Abyssal Mask Abyssal Mask — vs AP-heavy enemy teams (2+ mages). MR for survival, plus the aura amps your team's magic damage on anyone you stand next to — which is always the case for a melee bruiser.
  • Riftmaker Riftmaker — vs extended-fight comps (tanks + bruisers). Converts your sustained damage to omnivamp, so Kingslayer keeps healing you through long skirmishes the enemy can't burst out of.

Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes is default. Mercury's Treads is the swap when the enemy team has hard CC; Ionian Boots of Lucidity is rarely correct because Ultimate Hunter and Transcendence already cover his ability haste needs.

Skill order: Max Q first (waveclear, main damage, and Petricite Burst proc fuel), W second (the heal scales hard per rank), E last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Domination with Dark Harvest, Taste of Blood, Grisly Mementos, Ultimate Hunter. Secondary Sorcery with Manaflow Band and Transcendence. The keystone (the headline rune at the top of the page) stacks on every takedown, so by 4-5 kills it adds a chunk of bonus damage on top of every combo.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Sylas beats

  • Game-winning AOE engage ult to steal

Hijack copies Unstoppable Force and gives Sylas the long-range knock-up teamfight starter his base kit lacks. He waits for the enemy to clump on an objective, steals the ult before committing E1, and the stolen Unstoppable Force initiates the fight on his timing.

    Malphite
  • Game-winning AOE engage ult to steal

Hijack copies Curse of the Sad Mummy and turns it into a point-blank AOE stun on every enemy around Sylas. He E1-E2s into the middle of a group, R steals and recasts the wrap, and the whole enemy team is locked while his Q detonation lands.

    Amumu
  • Game-winning AOE engage ult to steal

Hijack copies Call of the Forge God and gives Sylas a two-cast long-range knock-up the moment he reaches level 6. He fires the first cast from fog of war, then knocks-up the same line again on recast, controlling the entire teamfight from outside his usual short range.

    Ornn
  • Mage with a steal-worthy execute ult

Hijack copies Final Spark and gives Sylas a long-range linear execute his base kit completely lacks. After his combo blows up the front line, he steals Lux's R and uses it to finish low-HP backline carries from across the screen, cleaning up the fight he started.

    Lux
  • Mage with a steal-worthy global execute

Hijack copies Requiem and gives Sylas a global finisher that ignores positioning entirely. Whenever a low-HP enemy backs to base after his skirmish, Sylas steals R and snipes them from across the map, converting near-misses into kills with no map travel.

    Karthus

Champions that beat Sylas

  • Long-range artillery mage

Vel'Koz's Plasma Fission Q and Void Rift W both reach 1050 units, far beyond Sylas's 775-range Chain Lash. He chips Sylas from outside the E1 dash window, builds Organic Deconstruction passive stacks on every hit.

    Vel Koz
  • Long-range artillery mage

Xerath's Arcanopulse gains range the longer he charges it, well outside Sylas's E1 + Q gap-close window. He pokes Sylas off the wave from a screen away, Eye of Destruction W slows the dash approach.

    Xerath
  • Point-and-click hard-CC mage

Annie holds her Pyromania passive at 4 stacks, then Disintegrates Sylas the instant he lands Abduct. The point-and-click stun freezes him at the exact frame he is committed, his E recast goes on cooldown without resolving.

    Annie
  • Point-and-click hard-CC mage

Lissandra waits for Sylas's E1 dash, then Ring of Frost W roots him in melee range the instant he arrives. The root stops his combo before he can recast E2, Ice Shard Q chips him while he stands locked, and Frozen Tomb R seals the kill if he is below half HP after his W heal.

    Lissandra
  • Suppression CC mage

Malzahar's Nether Grasp suppression goes through Hijack's cast window and locks Sylas mid-channel before he can steal an ult. His W heal is wasted while he stands suppressed, Void Swarm voidlings chip him during the lock.

    Malzahar

Key matchups

  • Annie: Hardest matchup. Her Pyromania stun is point-and-click and lands the instant you commit Abduct. Buy Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil as your second item if the lane is going badly. Pre-6, farm with Q from max range and never E onto her until her stun charge is used.
  • Vel'Koz: Tough ranged poke matchup. Plasma Fission (Q) outranges Abscond / Abduct (E) and chips you faster than Kingslayer (W) heals back, and Void Rift (W) covers the ground you would cross to close. Take Doran's Shield, max Q to push and roam, and look to side-lane skirmishes where you can E onto squishies — a straight 1v1 in mid is unwinnable.
  • Yone: Skill matchup but Sylas favoured. His Spirit Cleave (W) shield absorbs the Q detonation, so trade after he has spent it. Kingslayer heals through that shield over time, and your E-Abduct catches him mid Soul Unbound (E) dash.
  • Twisted Fate: Counter-pick this one in lane. Pre-6 you outpush him; after 6, when he tries to roam, Abscond / Abduct (E) onto him at river and burst before Pick a Card (W) locks the gold card that would stun you. Track Destiny (R) with mid wards so you know when he is moving.
  • Diana: Skill matchup. Moonfall (R) pulls you in but does not interrupt the Abscond / Abduct (E) recast — dash forward into her, Abduct back out, and reset with Kingslayer (W) at low HP. Buy Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass as a third item to cover the Moonfall (R) into Crescent Strike (Q) follow-up.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: With E and Q you can already trade. Dash in with E1, drop Q at their feet, recast E2 to knock them up into the explosion, and walk out with Petricite Burst procced on the way back. Free poke if your dash is up.
  • Level 6: First Hijack. Scan enemy ults in champ-select and learn which 5 you want to steal across roles. Even an "average" stolen ult (Lux R, Karthus R) doubles your damage in skirmishes; a "great" one (Malphite R, Amumu R) wins you the next teamfight by itself.
  • Hextech Rocketbelt Hextech Rocketbelt completion (~ minute 11-13): First major item spike, and post-rework it is a survivability spike as much as an offensive one: the 350 health is what keeps the E1-E2-Q-W dive alive through the counter-burst while Kingslayer heals you back. The active is a second mobility tool, so you engage on a target who already burned their escape (Flash, Ekko E, Yasuo E). Roam pressure flips here.
  • Nashor's Tooth Nashor's Tooth + Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 22-26): Petricite Burst autos hit like a second ability between every spell cast. Sylas now wins extended duels against most bruisers and forces objective fights where his Hijack outscales the enemy team comp.

Common mistakes

  • Hijacking the first ult you can reach. Hijack has an 80-second base cooldown at rank 1: spending it on a low-value steal (an enchanter shield, a small AOE slow) wastes the entire pick window. Identify in champ-select the 1-2 enemy ults you want, and hold R until the right target is in range.
  • Casting Q before E2. The Q detonation has a delay. If you Q first and then E-Abduct, your target dashes out of the explosion zone with you. The correct order is E1 → E2 (knock-up) → Q (drops onto the airborne target) → W (heal) — the knock-up locks them inside the Q explosion radius.
  • Using W as poke. Kingslayer's healing scales the lower your HP. Hitting it at full HP for chip damage wastes a cooldown that runs 12 seconds at rank 1: you get back almost nothing, and now you have no heal when the enemy commits back. Save W for after you take a hit.
  • Standing still during Hijack channel. The cast has a short channel where you become a stationary target. Step behind your front line before casting R, or use it from fog of war. Standing in melee range while channelling is how you get cancelled by a stun and lose the steal.

Advanced tip

Practice E-flashing on the second cast. The E recast (Abduct) is a directional skillshot pull, and pressing Flash during its cast animation teleports your model — so you start the chains from a position the enemy was not preparing to dodge. This catches opponents who side-step the obvious dash line, especially mages who back off the moment they see E1. In high-stakes teamfights, an E2-flash onto the enemy carry is a 1-button game-winner: they cannot react to a chain that came from a different angle than your dash.
