Why these runes

Precision with Press the Attack: three consecutive autos amplify your own damage by 8% for the rest of the fight, lining up with W slow plus two Q breaths. Triumph heals on takedown, Legend: Alacrity speeds Q animations, Coup de Grace +8% damage under 40% HP for the kill secure.

Why secondary

Sorcery secondary: Transcendence pushes ability haste so Q and W come back faster during stack farming, and Scorch gives early-lane chip damage from W landing — turning a passive farm phase into a slow poke phase.

When to switch secondary

Versus heavy hook or burst supports (Blitzcrank, Thresh, Pyke), swap Sorcery to Resolve with Bone Plating (flat damage reduction on the first 3 hits) and Overgrowth (bonus max HP), trading some late-game scaling for early-lane survival.

Win Condition

Reach 125 stacks before minute 20, then 225 stacks before the first Baron. With evolved Q execute online and three crit items, every grouped fight is yours.

Weakness

No reliable escape (E is offensive, not defensive) and a vulnerable level 1-9. If the lane is a hook or dive bot lane, every Q you cast on a minion is a Q you cannot cast on the enemy chasing you.

Overview

Smolder is a marksman with a passive that turns the entire game into a stack count. Every minion killed with Super Scorcher Breath (Q) and every ability hit on a champion adds one Dragon Practice stack, scaling his basic ability damage. At 125 stacks his Q evolves into an AOE breath that hits everyone around the target; at 225 stacks it gains a max-HP true damage execute on top. The whole identity of the champion is "farm patiently, stack mom's homework, then start one-shotting tanks from minute 25 onward".

The game plan is straightforward but unforgiving: last-hit minions with Q instead of auto-attacks whenever your mana allows it, poke with Achooo! (W) from 1500 units when you cannot reach the wave, and avoid the inviting all-ins that other marksmen can win pre-6. Flap, Flap, Flap (E) is not a Flash — it is an offensive dash that bombards the lowest-HP enemy nearby, so you cannot mash it under tower to escape a gank. Pair Smolder with a peel support (Lulu, Janna, Soraka, Yuumi, Karma) and let mom do the late-game work.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Blade Doran's Blade + Health Potion Health Potion. Doran's Shield Doran's Shield is acceptable into a poke matchup (Caitlyn, Varus) where you only need to survive long enough to farm Q stacks.

Core items (in order):

  1. Statikk Shiv Statikk Shiv — first item: attack speed, movement speed, and an energized AOE proc that finishes minion waves with a single Q. The fastest stack-farming first item Smolder has.
  2. Berserker's Greaves Berserker's Greaves — bonus attack speed; the default boots option, Boots of Swiftness Boots of Swiftness is the swap when the enemy team has multiple slows or a Rammus.
  3. The Collector The Collector — crit, lethality, and an execute under 5% HP that triples up with Smolder's 225-stack Q execute on tanks and his Coup de Grace rune.
  4. Infinity Edge Infinity Edge — the spike that turns the third-item Smolder into a real hyper-carry. It does double duty: 30% critical strike damage takes every crit from 200% to 230%, and 75 attack damage feeds both your autos and the physical half of every Q breath. Skipping it leaves real damage on the table, so do not delay this item.
  5. Bloodthirster Bloodthirster — life steal plus an overheal shield; the final piece that lets Smolder out-sustain Aatrox, Vladimir, and Dr. Mundo in long fights instead of being kited out.

Situational items:

  • Rapid Firecannon Rapid Firecannon — into short-range bot bullies (Samira, Yasuo bot). The Energized attack gains 35% bonus attack range, so the auto half of your Q-AA cycle lands from outside their auto-attack window.
  • Mercurial Scimitar Mercurial Scimitar — vs single-target hard CC that locks you out of your stack-farming phase (Ashe R arrow, Morgana Q snare, Malzahar R suppression). The active cleanses the CC with one button.
  • Lord Dominik's Regards Lord Dominik's Regards — vs frontline stacking 3000+ HP. 35% armor penetration keeps your physical damage from bouncing off a big armor bar; the 225-stack burn is true damage and ignores armor on its own.
  • Mortal Reminder Mortal Reminder — vs healing-stacking comps (Soraka, Aatrox, Dr. Mundo). Grievous Wounds cuts their healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds; without it the chip damage your stacking Q applies gets healed back faster than you can stack.
  • Guardian Angel Guardian Angel — vs heavy dive comps (Malphite + Yasuo, Hecarim). The revive turns one positioning slip into two team-fight contributions, which a stationary stack-farmer needs more than most.

Boots: Berserker's Greaves Berserker's Greaves is the default. Boots of Swiftness Boots of Swiftness is correct into multiple slows or root-heavy comps where mobility lets you reposition to E onto the lowest-HP target.

Skill order: Max Q first (the stack engine and your scaling damage), W second (slow and poke uptime), E last (offensive utility only). Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16. Open level 1 with W for the long-range poke at the first wave meet, then put your level 2 point in Q to start the stack count.

Runes: Primary Precision with Press the Attack, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Coup de Grace. Secondary Sorcery with Transcendence and Scorch, or Resolve with Bone Plating and Overgrowth versus heavy hook or burst supports.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Smolder beats

  • HP-stacking tank with no escape

Super Scorcher Breath (Q) 225-stack evolution deals true damage based on max HP, and Sion's Glory in Death passive HP pool plus Soul Furnace (W) stack make him a bigger trophy. Decimating Smash (Q) is a 2-second charge that Achooo! (W) interrupts before the stun lands.

    Sion
  • Immobile AP scaler with cage setup

MMOOOMMMM! (R) is a cross-map AOE ground target and Veigar needs to stand still to set up Event Horizon (E) cage into Primordial Burst (R). He has no dash to leave the sweet spot, and Phenomenal Evil Power passive AP needs farm time Smolder also wants.

    Veigar
  • Immobile backline ADC support

Senna has no dash and her Last Embrace (W) is a delayed root that needs her stationary. Achooo! (W) pokes from 1500 units while she walks up to soul stack, and the 225-stack Super Scorcher Breath (Q) true damage execute deletes her low base HP from across the map.

    Senna
  • Short-range melee bot bully

Yasuo has only Sweeping Blade (E) for mobility and Steel Tempest (Q) range is 475. Achooo! (W) pokes from 1500 units while Yasuo cannot reach the wave, and Wind Wall (W) blocks projectiles only briefly while Smolder farms Dragon Practice stacks safely.

    Yasuo
  • Early-game ADC that falls off into stacking spike

Spinning Axe (Q) needs Draven to walk into auto range to catch the falling axe, and Blood Rush (W) only refreshes when he catches one. Achooo! (W) pokes him during the catch animation, and 225-stack Super Scorcher Breath (Q) executes his squishy build.

    Draven

Champions that beat Smolder

  • Hook support with single-target pull

Smolder's only escape is Flap, Flap, Flap (E) which is a 16-24 second offensive tool, not a real defensive dash. A landed Rocket Grab (Q) converts to a kill before E is up, and Power Fist (E) knock-up chains straight into the follow-up burst before Dragon Practice stacks matter.

    Blitzcrank
  • Hook support with carry execute

Bone Skewer (Q) pulls Smolder into the kill zone before Flap, Flap, Flap (E) can disengage. Phantom Undertow (E) returns to him chaining a stun, and Death From Below (R) executes Smolder's low base HP before 225-stack Q evolution comes online.

    Pyke
  • Long-range bot poke laner

Piltover Peacemaker (Q) pokes from 1250 and her 650 base attack range outranges Smolder's 550 auto. Yordle Snap Trap (W) zoning denies the stack farming path, and Smolder cannot retaliate without burning Achooo! (W) mana on harass instead of last-hits.

    Caitlyn
  • Roaming assassin with shadow dashes

Living Shadow (W) plus Death Mark (R) double-dash reach Smolder's back line through terrain-ignoring leaps. Flap, Flap, Flap (E) flies toward the lowest-HP target — often Zed himself as bait — so the evasion tool is the commit tool that wastes the only mobility.

    Zed
  • AP burst flex pick with stun setup

Dark Sphere (Q) setup plus Scatter the Weak (E) knock-back stun denies the stationary Q stack farming, and Unleashed Power (R) one-shots Smolder before 225-stack evolution. Force of Will (W) adds a long-range sphere throw that punishes standing still to cast MMOOOMMMM! (R).

    Syndra

Key matchups

  • Caitlyn / Varus: Long-range poke laners. Take Doran's Shield Doran's Shield, hide behind the wave, and farm with Q under tower for stacks. Their lane pressure drops sharply once you finish Statikk Shiv Statikk Shiv — both scale into late game worse than you do, so survive the first ten minutes and the matchup flips.
  • Draven: He wins every auto-attack trade pre-6 and his early all-in beats yours. Do not match him in the open: stay behind your support, use Q only for last-hits, and look to win the matchup by simply outscaling him after one item. Doran's Shield Doran's Shield is a strong start here.
  • Ezreal: Skill matchup. He pokes with Mystic Shot but commits to a stationary cast each time. Walk up only during his Q animation to last-hit with your Q; if he uses Arcane Shift (E) for poke, that is your window to throw W down his retreat path because the dash leaves him stationary for the recovery frames.
  • Jhin / Senna: Safe matchups. Neither dashes and neither matches your scaling. Farm patiently, stack with Q on every minion you can afford the mana for, and play for the late-game Baron fight rather than for a kill in lane.
  • Samira / Yasuo bot: Short-range melee bullies. Take Rapid Firecannon Rapid Firecannon after Statikk Shiv Statikk Shiv and abuse the range gap. Never auto-attack-trade with Samira once her Daredevil Impulse combo has reached S grade; cancel her ult-window potential by holding W to slow her in and E away from her, not towards her — your E is offensive but its movement speed component still saves you if you target a minion behind you.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 6: First MMOOOMMMM! unlocks cross-map kill participation. If you have line of sight to a low-HP enemy on bot side of the map, you can secure it from base; in lane it turns a W-Q trade into a kill you can confirm from outside their range.
  • 125 stacks (~ minute 14-18): Super Scorcher Breath evolves into an AOE breath that hits everyone around the target. Wave clear flips: you push 4-minion waves with a single Q-AA combo. Force Statikk Shiv Statikk Shiv before this spike to make the wave-clear matter for jungle pathing.
  • 225 stacks (~ minute 22-28): The execute kicks in: Q deals max-HP true damage to low-HP enemies. The tank stacking 3500 HP across from you is now slower to kill than the squishy backline by exactly zero seconds. This is the moment to force Baron Nashor, Drake, and Elder Dragon fights — your team has to play around this window.
  • Infinity Edge Infinity Edge online (~ minute 28-32): 75 attack damage and 30% critical strike damage land at once, so both your autos and the physical half of every Q breath jump. With three items and Press the Attack amplifying your damage, no enemy squishy survives a full combo at this stage.

Common mistakes

  • Last-hitting with auto-attacks instead of Q. Every minion killed with your auto-attack is a stack you did not get. As long as you have the mana, Q the killing blow. The mana refund on Q kills means you pay almost nothing per stack, but only if you actually use the spell.
  • Treating Flap, Flap, Flap like Flash. E bombards the lowest-HP enemy in range, which is often the diver chasing you, not the way out. Pressing E to escape a Blitzcrank Q makes you fly toward him, not past him. Use E offensively to finish a low-HP target, never as a panic button.
  • Spamming W for harass in early lane. Achooo! costs 50-70 mana and Smolder's mana pool is small. Two W casts equal one recall. Hold W for guaranteed hits — on someone slowed, snared, or hooked — not for pokes the enemy can side-step.
  • Forcing fights before 125 stacks. Pre-evolution Smolder has the worst damage output of any marksman in his price range. Trying to win a 2v2 at minute 10 with 40 stacks is a lost fight. Sit on the wave, farm with Q, accept the grind.
  • Standing at maximum range during team fights. Maximum W range puts you outside your support's peel. Stand one auto-attack length back from your front line, not on its tip — assassins (any champion that bursts a target down in 1-2 seconds) target you the moment they see you isolated, and Smolder has no real escape spell to bail him out.

Advanced tip

Cancel your Super Scorcher Breath (Q) animation by buffering an auto-attack input immediately after the cast. The Q projectile still fires, but Smolder's attack timer is not eaten by the wind-down — you squeeze in one more auto per Q-AA cycle. Across a six-second trade, that is two extra autos of Press the Attack stacking and Statikk Shiv energized charge. Drill it in practice tool until the input is automatic before taking it into ranked.
