Precision primary: Shyvana fights last 5-7 seconds once R is active and Conqueror ramps each hit until W's explosion lands. Triumph heals on takedown, Legend: Alacrity speeds Q recasts, Last Stand pays off below 60% HP where Scalemail stacks shine.
Resolve secondary: Bone Plating cushions the first 3 hits of an enemy engage (the window where Shyvana is mid-R commit and exposed), Overgrowth adds permanent HP per nearby minion death — a passive snowball that compounds with Scalemail's permanent armor and MR stacks.
Vs AP pokers (Karthus jungle, Brand jungle), swap Resolve to Sorcery with Nimbus Cloak (Move Speed after Smite, helps land R) plus Gathering Storm (scaling Adaptive Force for the late-game gap).
Win Condition
Stack Scalemail by farming and skirmishing early, then use R Dragon's Descent to fear-engage from outside vision. Dragon Form W heals on champion hit, so every long fight tilts in your favor as bonus resistances pile up.
Weakness
Pre-6 Shyvana has no gap-close and her Q is melee range. Long-range kiters (Nidalee Q, Karthus E) and anti-tank true damage (Olaf E) tear through Scalemail before she stacks it.
Overview
Shyvana is a melee fighter / tank hybrid (a champion that trades a bit of burst for permanent stacking defenses and a teamfight ultimate) built around three ideas: she has no resource bar so her abilities are spammable, her passive Scalemail turns every takedown into permanent extra Armor and Magic Resist, and her R Dragon's Descent transforms her into a fear-engage dragon whose basic abilities all get an upgraded second form. That ultimate is the entire reason to pick Shyvana — she is the answer to enemy teams that need to land one big group engage (Malphite R, Sejuani R, Amumu R), because her R can blow up the cluster on its way in.
The jungle game plan is simple in shape. Clear (kill all the neutral monsters in your half of the jungle) fast — no mana cost means Shyvana spams Emberstrike and Molten Burst on every camp, and W's shield covers the chip damage. Gank (a surprise attack on a lane from the jungle) sparingly before level 6, because her only setup is E's slow and that alone rarely locks a target. From level 6 on, R is a win button: hold it for the enemy's hard-engage, fear-leap into them, and let Dragon Form W heal you back while E trails fire across the cluster.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Gustwalker Hatchling (450g) + 1 Health Potion (50g). That is the full 500 gold you start with; the Refillable Potion is a first-back purchase, not a start. The pet quest auto-completes around minute 3-4 once you have done two camps and damaged an enemy champion.
Core items (in order):
Gustwalker Hatchling — pet companion (auto-evolves around minute 3-4 once you have cleared enough camps). The Gustwalker companion grants a Move Speed burst that stacks on top of W's speed bonus and turns the clear-into-gank transition into a surprise dive (a full-commit attack onto an enemy under their own tower).
Ravenous Hydra — first legendary item, first big power spike (the moment in the game when your champion becomes much stronger). The cleave on every auto-attack triples your clear speed and helps you wave-clear side lanes between fights. The omnivamp (a heal proc on every type of damage) tops you back up between camps without ever recalling.
Plated Steelcaps — default boots vs most enemy comps. They reduce damage from basic attacks, which matters in long Dragon Form fights against marksmen (long-range physical damage carries like Caitlyn or Jinx).
Sterak's Gage — bonus AD scaled on base AD plus a Lifeline shield (an HP-threshold passive: a shield that auto-pops when your HP drops below ~30%). The shield triggers right when Dragon Form W's healing peaks, doubling the survivability window.
Black Cleaver — late-core slot, and the right one for a champion with no resource bar. 3000 gold for 45 attack damage, 400 HP and 20 ability haste, and haste is the stat Shyvana converts better than anyone: nothing but the cooldown stands between her and the next Emberstrike or Molten Burst. Carve strips 6% armor per hit up to five stacks, and between Q hits and Hydra cleave you are at the cap within a couple of seconds of landing in Dragon Form. Healing is the one thing she does not need to buy — Dragon Form W already supplies it.
Spirit Visage — late tank slot. Adds MR plus a healing-amp passive that boosts every heal source on you by 25% — W's Dragon Form heal and the healing Conqueror gives you at full stacks both become 25% more value, which is the real reason you can skip a lifesteal item entirely.
Situational items:
Mercury's Treads — swap from Steelcaps if the enemy has 3+ hard CC abilities (stuns, roots, fears that lock your character). The boots' tenacity stat reduces the duration of those CC effects so the second engage chain doesn't kite you forever.
Sundered Sky — 3100 gold for 40 attack damage after 26.16 cut the healing and 26.17 took 5 attack damage off, which is why it left the core build. Buy it when the game is a string of jungle duels rather than group fights: the guaranteed crit on the first auto of each fight is front-loaded damage that Dragon Form's ramp cannot provide.
Maw of Malmortius — vs single AP burst threats (Syndra, Veigar, LeBlanc). The magic shield triggers exactly when an AP threat is mid-combo on you, preventing a one-shot during your R commit.
Force of Nature — vs heavy AP comps (Brand jungle + Karthus + Vladimir). Magic Resist plus a passive Move Speed bonus that stacks on top of W's speed burst, so you keep closing the gap while the enemy team tries to kite you.
Death's Dance — vs squads with two strong physical damage dealers (e.g. Yasuo + Caitlyn): converts the burst AD (high damage in 1-2 seconds, like an assassin combo) you eat into a slow bleed (damage spread over a few seconds instead of all at once), giving you time to keep swinging in Dragon Form.
Guardian Angel — when you keep getting focused first as the engage tool. A free second life lets you commit deeper on R without throwing.
Boots:
Plated Steelcaps is default. Switch to
Mercury's Treads when the enemy team has more hard crowd control than basic-attack damage.
Skill order: Max W first (best clear, best shield, best Dragon Form heal). Max E second (Molten Burst's slow scales and clear speed flows from it). Max Q last — the recasts already do most of the damage at rank 1, so save the points. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Last Stand. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating + Overgrowth, or Sorcery with Nimbus Cloak + Gathering Storm if the enemy team has AP pokers (Karthus, Brand) you need to reach.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Shyvana beats
Tank jungler built around one hard-engage ultimate
Glacial Prison (R) is Sejuani's only long-range engage and Arctic Assault (Q) is a short body-contact dash. Dragon's Descent (R) fears her mid-R cast and interrupts the chain Frost setup, while Molten Burst (E) burns her stacked enemies, denying the Permafrost (E) follow-up.
SejuaniSustain skirmisher without disengage
Warwick relies on Jaws of the Beast (Q) auto-resets and Eternal Hunger passive heal to stay on Shyvana, but Primal Howl (E) is his only escape. Inferno Aegis (W) heal-on-hit out-sustains the Q heal, and Dragon's Descent (R) fears him out of Infinite Duress (R) suppression range.
WarwickSingle-target hard-engage caster
Unstoppable Force (R) is his only gap-closer and has a clear travel-time telegraph. Dragon's Descent (R) fears him mid-R cast and interrupts the knock-up, and in Dragon Form the wider Molten Burst (E) covers the whole cluster he was about to land on.
MalphiteRanged skirmisher that falls off into Dragon Form
Blinding Assault (Q) only blinds one auto while Emberstrike (Q) still cleaves in Dragon Form, and Behind Enemy Lines (R) requires Quinn to commit before Shyvana hits 6. Inferno Aegis (W) heal-on-hit out-sustains her Vault (E) kite damage.
QuinnRanged AP skirmisher that falls off into Dragon Form
Blinding Dart (Q) cannot stop the Emberstrike (Q) plus Tiamat cleave clear and Move Quick (W) move speed loses to Dragon's Descent (R) flight speed. Inferno Aegis (W) heal-on-hit out-sustains the Toxic Shot (E) poison once Shyvana reaches Dragon Form.
Teemo
Champions that beat Shyvana
Anti-tank skirmisher that bypasses Scalemail
Reckless Swing (E) deals true damage that ignores the armor and magic resist that Scalemail passive stacks. Ragnarok (R) plus Tough It Out (W) attack speed plus Berserker Rage passive let him out-DPS Shyvana inside her own R Dragon Form sustain window.
OlafLong-range poke jungler
Javelin Toss (Q) out-ranges Emberstrike (Q) by a full screen and applies an empowered Takedown auto-reset under 33% HP. Shyvana has no dash before level 6, so Bushwhack (W) trap zoning and Q poke bleed her HP and Scalemail stacks before she ever reaches melee.
NidaleeEarly-fight jungler that beats Shyvana pre-6
Sonic Wave / Resonating Strike (Q) gives Lee Sin a ranged engage at level 3 and Safeguard (W) shield blocks the chunk of an Inferno Aegis (W) trade. Dragon's Rage (R) knock-back resets Shyvana out of her R Dragon's Descent arrival zone.
Lee SinGlobal-pressure tank that out-tempos R engages
Stand United (R) teleports Shen onto Shyvana's Dragon's Descent (R) target with a large shield, neutralizing the dive entirely. Spirit's Refuge (W) blocks Dragon Form autos, and Shadow Dash (E) taunt locks Shyvana inside her own R commit before W detonates.
ShenMobile R-steal mage
Hijack (R) steals Dragon's Descent for Sylas's own engage and Kingslayer (W) heal beats Shyvana's Inferno Aegis (W) sustain in a 1v1. Abscond/Abduct (E) dashes around her Emberstrike (Q) radius, and Chain Lash (Q) AOE chip out-pokes her in jungle.

Key matchups
- Lee Sin: Early-fight king who beats you at level 3 if he opens with Sonic Wave plus Smite (the jungler summoner spell). Avoid his red-side jungle until level 4 and skip pre-6 invades. Once R is online and Hydra is up, the math swings — your sustained Dragon Form damage and W heal beat his single-rotation burst.
- Warwick: Sustain mirror in the jungle. He scales with Attack Speed and missing-HP healing; you scale with stacking resistances and Dragon Form heal. Don't open at full HP into him: let him commit Q first, take a bit of damage, then R-engage so his Eternal Hunger healing has nothing to scale on while your W heals you back.
- Sejuani: Tank jungler with hard CC. Your Q armor shred and Hydra cleave open her up, and her R Glacial Prison is exactly the engage you specifically counter — fear-leap with R the moment her R lands and the rest of her team eats the formation break too. Track her ult cooldown for objective fights.
- Kha'Zix: The classic counterpick (a champion specifically picked to neutralize you in draft) for skirmishers. He isolates and bursts you in 2 seconds (burst = high damage in 1-2 seconds) before Dragon Form heal stabilizes you. Group with your team after level 6 and play around vision (use wards to avoid being surprised); don't solo-invade his side of the jungle.
- Nidalee: She poke-clears with Javelin Toss from outside Emberstrike range. You can never trade with her while she is at full HP. Power-farm your own jungle until level 6, then look for cross-map R engages where she can't reach to defend. Shyvana wins games without ever fighting the enemy jungler: the pressure comes from where she chooses to land, not from beating Nidalee in the jungle.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3: All three basic abilities online. First gank window (a moment where you can leave the jungle to attack a lane). E for the slow on lane entry, walk in, Q-recast for the double-hit, W for the burst of speed and area damage. Most squishy laners are at 50% HP after one rotation.
- Level 6: First R unlocks Dragon Form. Cross-map fear-engages become a real threat: even an enemy who already used Flash loses the trade once Dragon's Descent fears them into your team.
Ravenous Hydra completion (~ minute 11-13): First dueling spike (the moment you can win 1v1 fights reliably). Clear speed nearly doubles, omnivamp tops you between camps, and your Dragon Form auto-cleave one-shots wave minions on the way to side-lane fights.- Two items + R online (~ minute 18-22): Peak teamfight window. Hold R for the enemy's grouped engage, fear-leap onto their backline, and cycle Dragon Form W heal + Q recasts + E fire trail until the fight ends. Every takedown stacks Scalemail permanently — by the third teamfight, the bonus resistances make you almost unkillable.
Common mistakes
- R'ing on cooldown for the dragon stats. R is your only fear and your only gap-close. Pressing it just to get the bigger size and the empowered basics wastes the fear on nothing. R is a commitment tool — press it for an engage you need to land, never as a "just in case" stat boost.
- Ganking pre-6 without setup. Pre-6 Shyvana has only E's slow and W's tiny speed burst. If the enemy laner has Flash up and the wave is far from your gank entry, that won't lock them in for Q range. Power-farm to 6 and gank with R after, when the fear does the job for you.
- Forgetting to stack Scalemail. Skipping a kill you could have helped secure, leaving the laner to finish off a low-HP enemy, staying out of a teamfight you could have joined: every takedown you pass up is permanent resistance you never get. Scalemail is a snowball stat: the early stacks pay off all game.
- Engaging with R from inside vision. The fear path is announced by the leap animation. If the enemy team has wards on your engage angle, they back off before R lands and you arrive on five spread-out targets with nobody following you in. R from fog (use jungle bushes or unwarded angles) — the surprise is half the damage.
- Skipping W in the combo. Dragon Form W heals on champion hit. Forgetting to recast it inside the fight throws away your main sustain. The sequence is always W in, Q recast for the double swing, E through the cluster, auto-cleave with Hydra — never auto-only.
Advanced tip
Practice the E-into-R fog engage on jungle entrances. From a brush the enemy team has not warded, throw Molten Burst across the choke so it lands the slow on the front-most target, then immediately R Dragon's Descent through the slowed unit toward the back line. The slow stretches the cluster apart for a fraction of a second, which is enough to land the fear on 3-4 of them at the same time instead of just the front tank. In Dragon Form, follow up with W on landing (heal procs as soon as a champion is in the explosion radius), Q recast on the back-line carry for the double-hit, and E again on the kited target — the second E passes through and trails fire on the retreat path. The full sequence takes under three seconds, and it is the difference between "Shyvana fears one tank" and "Shyvana fears the whole team and the fight is already over." Test it in a custom game against bots until the rhythm is automatic.
