Short blink that turns you invisible for a few seconds. First attack out of stealth is a guaranteed crit if it lands from behind. Your gank engage and escape.
Jack In The Box
Jack In The Box
Plant a hidden box that arms and fears the first enemy that walks within range. Damage adds up while it attacks. Used for early invades, vision denial, and bait setups.
Two-Shiv Poison
Two-Shiv Poison
Throws a dagger that damages and slows. Bonus damage under 30% HP — the execute that closes kills your Q + auto did not finish.
Hallucinate
Hallucinate
Spawns a clone that mimics you and explodes on death into three mini boxes. Use for fake-outs, extra DPS in skirmishes, and emergency disengage.

Why these runes

Domination: Hail of Blades gives three super-fast autos out of Q stealth, multiplying the empowered crit + Backstab into a one-burst kill. Sudden Impact adds 20-80 true damage per Q blink, Sixth Sense pings enemy wards on your path, Relentless Hunter chains ganks across the map.

Why secondary

Precision: Triumph restores 5% missing HP plus 2.5% max HP on takedown — the sustain you need to chain an in-out trade. Coup de Grace adds 8% damage to enemies under 40% HP, which combos with E's under-30% execute scaling for a clean kill.

When to switch secondary

Into tanky front lines (Ornn, Sion, Maokai) swap Precision for Inspiration: Magical Footwear (free Boots at minute 12, lets you skip into The Collector earlier) + Cosmic Insight (more Smite and Flash uptime in objective fights).

Win Condition

Use Q to flank from fog and crit a back-line target from behind. Combine R for double DPS in skirmishes; use E to execute under 30% HP. Snowball early kills before the enemy buys Control Wards on every corner.

Weakness

Hard CC (Malzahar R, Skarner R, Veigar E cage) cancels Q mid-stealth and stops the gank. Once the enemy buys Control Wards on river entrances, your stealth pattern is exposed and the kit loses its main edge.

Overview

Shaco is a melee AD assassin built around stealth, fear, and flank angles. His passive Backstab punishes basic attacks landed from behind with bonus damage, and his Deceive (Q) is a short blink that hides him for a few seconds — together they force you to play every fight like you are circling the target rather than walking at them. The W box is a pre-fight tool: drop it on a likely path before the lane opponent reaches the bush, and the fear chain hands you a free crit.

The game plan: clear bot-to-top with W for early sustain, place a W box in the river bush at minute 1:30 to deny vision, then look for level 3 ganks where the lane opponent has burned Flash. Use Q to enter from fog, auto-attack from behind for the empowered crit, E to slow and execute under 30% HP, and Q out if it goes sideways. After level 6 every skirmish becomes a 2v1 in your favor — the R clone mirrors your basic attacks for a few seconds and explodes into three mini boxes for a denial wall on retreat.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Gustwalker Hatchling Gustwalker Hatchling (450g) + 1 Health Potion Health Potion (50g). That is the full 500 gold you start with; the Refillable Potion Refillable Potion (150g) is a first-back purchase, not a start. Gustwalker is one of the three Summoner's Rift jungle starters that replaced Hailblade and Emberknife in patch 12.22: a companion pet that speeds up clears with bonus attack speed on Smited monsters and applies a brief speed-up after killing camps. Shaco needs to be on the lane before the vision dies, not after.

Core items (in order):

  1. Gustwalker Hatchling Gustwalker Hatchling — companion pet starter (450g). It grows on treats from large monsters: 15 for the first evolution, which upgrades Smite to Unleashed Smite, and 35 for the second, which upgrades it to Primal Smite. Out-of-combat speed turns river crossings into gank windows, and arriving first is Shaco's biggest lever.
  2. Youmuu's Ghostblade Youmuu's Ghostblade — first item rush. Lethality (flat armor penetration against low-armor targets, basically free damage on squishy back-line champions) plus an active speed boost.
  3. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity — ability haste boots so Q is up more often. Each extra Q is another gank or an invisible exit from a failed dive.
  4. The Collector The Collector — execute passive: targets below 5% HP die instantly. Closes the kills your burst would otherwise leave at 60 HP.
  5. Edge of Night Edge of Night — spell shield blocks the first enemy ability after a short channel. Saves you from Malzahar R, Lissandra R, or any single point-and-click crowd control that would cancel Q before stealth procs.
  6. Serylda's Grudge Serylda's Grudge — late-game armor penetration that scales with the target's armor, plus a slow on damaging abilities for chases.

Situational items:

  • Eclipse Eclipse — into bruiser-heavy comps (tanky melee fighters like Sett, Aatrox, Mordekaiser): the Ever Rising Moon shield lets you survive an extended trade when the front line is the only target available.
  • Umbral Glaive Umbral Glaive — vs enchanter supports (Janna, Lulu, Yuumi) that drop a Control Ward on every river bush: on-cast ward clear lets your Q stealth actually work.
  • Profane Hydra Profane Hydra — when your team needs side-lane pressure: cleave passive plus active execute lets you splitpush (push a side lane alone to force the enemy to respond) without losing burst on the carry.
  • Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads — swap from Lucidity vs heavy magic CC (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun). Tenacity (a stat that shortens stuns and slows applied to you) lets you Q out before they re-engage.
  • Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps — swap vs double-AD comps (two strong physical damage threats like Yasuo + Caitlyn): flat armor and basic-attack damage reduction.

Boots: Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity is the default. Mercury's Treads or Plated Steelcaps only when the matchup explicitly demands them.

Skill order: Take W at level 1 for the box-bait invade, E at level 2 for slow + poke, Q at level 3, then max Q first (lower stealth cooldown is your biggest lever), E second (slow + under-30% execute), W last. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Domination with Hail of Blades, Sudden Impact, Sixth Sense, Relentless Hunter. Secondary Precision with Triumph and Coup de Grace. Stat shards: Adaptive Force / Adaptive Force / Health Scaling.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Shaco beats

  • Squishy AP carry jungler without hard CC

Karthus has no dash and Wall of Pain (W) only slows — once Shaco lands a Deceive (Q) flank from fog, the Death Defied passive grants a single revive but cannot stop the second Backstab on the body. Two-Shiv Poison (E) executes him under 30% before Requiem (R) channel can finish.

    Karthus
  • Squishy carry jungler without hard CC

Mounting Dread (E) stacks for ramping damage but does no CC, and Wolf's Frenzy (W) puts Kindred in melee proximity. Deceive (Q) flanks during the W proximity zone and Lamb's Respite (R) zero-HP zone is countered by Hallucinate (R) clone tanking the channel duration.

    Kindred
  • Slow-clearing jungler without pre-6 gank

Shyvana relies on Scalemail passive for clear speed and her only pre-6 gap-closer is Emberstrike (Q) auto-reset. Jack In The Box (W) invades her red and blue buff before level 3 — the fear chain plus Deceive (Q) Backstab wipes her before Dragon's Descent (R) is online.

    Shyvana
  • Low-mobility marksman with one blink

Arcane Shift (E) is Ezreal's only blink and has a 19s base cooldown — once it is down, Deceive (Q) blinks behind him during the teamfight setup. Backstab passive turns the empowered crit into a one-shot before Trueshot Barrage (R) can fire as a panic disengage.

    Ezreal
  • Squishy hybrid duelist without sustained mobility

Hextech Capacitor passive gives Jayce a short speed window on form-swap but no real escape. Deceive (Q) bypasses his Shock Blast (Q) cannon-form poke window, and Two-Shiv Poison (E) executes him under 30% before Mercury Hammer (R) hammer-form survival tools kick in.

    Jayce

Champions that beat Shaco

  • Front-loaded bruiser jungler with point-and-click setup

Sonic Wave (Q) tags Shaco through Deceive's (Q) stealth start-up — hit during cast cancels the blink before Backstab procs. Safeguard (W) shield blocks Two-Shiv Poison (E) execute scaling, and Dragon's Rage (R) knock-back resets Shaco out of his ult clone wall on disengage.

    Lee Sin
  • Suppression mage that cannot be cleansed

Nether Grasp (R) applies a 2.5-second suppression that Quicksilver Sash and Mercury's Treads tenacity do not break. Once Malzahar catches Shaco, Deceive (Q) is wasted because the cast is interrupted on damage tick, and Malefic Visions (E) spreads damage during the suppression.

    Malzahar
  • Suppression bruiser jungler

Impale (R) is a directional suppression Skarner can drag Shaco out of his own jungle with, ignoring all tenacity stats. Seismic Bastion (W) shield plus passive Threads of Vibration slow chain prevent Deceive (Q) repositioning during the suppression window.

    Skarner
  • Tanky jungler with built-in counter-engage

Powerball (Q) closes the gap on Shaco fast and Frenzying Taunt (E) cancels his auto-attack window during Backstab — the taunt forces him to walk toward Rammus instead of circling behind. Defensive Ball Curl (W) reflects Shaco's empowered crit damage back onto him.

    Rammus
  • Plant-AOE caster flex pick

Grasping Roots (E) catches Shaco mid Deceive (Q) cast and the root applies on the body even from fog. Stranglethorns (R) AOE knock-up plus plant aggro hits the Hallucinate (R) clone, and Deadly Spines (Q) plus Rampant Growth (W) seeds chip his low base HP.

    Zyra

Key matchups

  • Lee Sin: Avoid level-2 and level-3 invades. His Q Sonic Wave plus W shield beats your kit before your first Q rank is even online. Clear bot-to-top, hover Scuttle with a box on the river entrance, and let your laners catch him if he over-extends.
  • Karthus: Free matchup. He has no escape and walks alone to push waves. Pre-6, drop a W box on the path he walks to take Raptors and Q in for the empowered crit. Level 6 onward, R + Q + AA + E deletes him from across his jungle while he is channeling Requiem.
  • Elise: Power-spike race. She wins level 3 ganks; you win level 6 onward thanks to R double-DPS. Clear as fast as she does, bot-to-top, contest Drake with a W box wall in the pit, and trade objectives until R is online.
  • Jarvan IV: Counter-engage threat. His E-Q knock-up cancels Q mid-stealth. Buy Edge of Night Edge of Night earlier than usual; the spell shield eats his flag-toss combo before stealth procs.
  • Graves: Even early, your favor after first item. Never duel him in the open jungle pre-6 — his W smoke screen blinds you and cancels Backstab. Wait for him to push out toward Scuttle, Q in from the back-side river bush, E slow, auto-attack reset, and pull him into your bot laner.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3 (Q + W + E): Full kit unlocked. Look for an isolated gank — flank a side lane through the river bush with W boxes pre-placed in the lane brush, Q in, auto-attack reset, E for the slow and the under-30% execute. Pre-6 Shaco gank is one of the strongest in the game when the target has used Flash.
  • Level 6 (first Hallucinate): Burst spike. Your power in mid-river skirmishes jumps here: R to spawn the clone, Q to flank, auto-attack from behind, E to execute. The clone soaks one or two skill-shots and explodes into mini boxes when it dies — an extra denial wall on your retreat.
  • Youmuu's Ghostblade Youmuu's Ghostblade completion (~ minute 9-11): Burst spike. The active speed boost lets you cross half the map for a flank (entering a fight from a side the enemy cannot see, usually behind their back line). Force fights around the second Drake.
  • The Collector The Collector + Edge of Night Edge of Night (~ minute 18-21): Pick spike. Q from fog behind the carry, auto-attack crit, E for the kill — and the spell shield eats whatever follow-up CC the support tries. This is when Shaco becomes a teamfight-deciding pick machine (a pick = killing an isolated enemy outside the teamfight).

Common mistakes

  • Walking up to the gank target instead of flanking. Backstab demands you hit from behind for the crit. Always Q in from a side they are not facing — pathing toward their face gives up roughly half your damage.
  • Using R for damage instead of as a body double. Hallucinate is both a damage button (clone auto-attacks) and a deception button (clone runs forward while you stealth back, or soaks a stun). Late-game the deception value matters more — split the clone away from your real body to bait skill-shots.
  • Placing Jack In The Box in a visible lane. Boxes are for fog of war. A W on a visible wave gets cleared by minions or a single auto. Plant them in tri-bush, river bush, drag pit entrances, and on the recall path.
  • Greeding the kill after a failed Q. If the empowered crit does not delete the target, Q out immediately. Never trade auto-attacks face-to-face after the burst — your AD without crit and Backstab is unremarkable.
  • Skipping Edge of Night against suppression comps. Suppression (Malzahar R, Skarner R) cannot be cleansed by Mercury's Treads tenacity. If either is on the enemy team, Edge of Night Edge of Night is third item, not fifth.

Advanced tip

Drill the R-clone-fake-out: immediately after casting Hallucinate, send the clone at the enemy while you back away through fog. The enemy team almost always blows their CC on the closer target, leaving the real Shaco free to Q in three seconds later, flank from behind, and clean up. This trick is the single highest-leverage habit on the champion — pulled off cleanly in a Baron setup, a solo pick on the enemy ADC is a free objective. The skill ceiling is the direction-input timing: too early and the clone runs into your team, too late and the enemy realizes which body is real.
