Core Abilities

Fury of the North
Out of combat, Sejuani gains Frost Armor: bonus Armor, Magic Resist, and immunity to slows. She can shatter a stunned enemy with a basic attack for big magic damage.
Arctic Assault
Arctic Assault
Short forward dash that knocks up the first enemy line it crosses. The dash stops on the first enemy champion hit. Main engage tool.
Winter's Wrath
Winter's Wrath
Two mace swings: first a tap, then an AOE swipe in a cone. Damages, slows, and stacks Frost on enemies — your main source of Frost stacks.
Permafrost
Permafrost
Detonates Frost stacks on an enemy champion: stuns and damages them. Needs 4 Frost stacks (built up by W and her R). Your only single-target stun.
Glacial Prison
Glacial Prison
Long-range bola that stuns the first champion hit and slows everyone else inside an ice storm. The teamfight starter — pair with E for a back-to-back stun chain.

Why these runes

Resolve primary: Aftershock procs on every Q knockup and E stun, giving 2.5s of bonus Armor and Magic Resist as your team commits behind you. Font of Life heals you and an ally on every CC land, Conditioning compounds with tank items, Overgrowth scales HP off jungle clears.

Why secondary

Sorcery secondary: Nimbus Cloak gives you free Movement Speed the moment you Flash or Smite into the engage — bridges the 650 Q range gap. Transcendence gives 5 ability haste at level 5 and 5 more at level 8, then refunds 20% of basic cooldowns on takedowns from level 11.

When to switch secondary

If the enemy team has 2+ Cleanse/QSS users that will pop your R chain, swap Sorcery to Inspiration with Cosmic Insight (more Summoner Spell uptime) and Magical Footwear (free base boots at minute 12, saving the 300 gold of Boots for an earlier Hollow Radiance).

Win Condition

Land R on the enemy carry to start the fight, walk in with Q knockup, and chain W into E for a second stun once Frost stacks are up. Sit on top of their back line while your team unloads.

Weakness

Q is a short 650-range dash with no follow-up if it misses, and E needs the Frost stacks that only W builds. With R down and the enemy kiting you out of W range, you have no single-target CC at all.

Overview

Sejuani is a tank jungler whose game plan is "land the stun, hold the stun". She has two pieces of hard crowd control on different cooldowns — Arctic Assault (Q) knocks an entire line up, and Permafrost (E) stuns one champion once Winter's Wrath (W) has stacked enough Frost — and her ultimate Glacial Prison (R) is a 1300-range root that starts the teamfight from off-screen. Her passive Fury of the North gives her Frost Armor out of combat, so she rolls into ganks already shielded with bonus Armor and Magic Resist.

The trade-off: she is melee, her Q dash only covers 650 units, and she needs W to build Frost stacks before E can stun. Miss the R and she becomes a slow tank, easy to kite for 60-90 seconds. Game plan: pick the fight, soak the damage aimed at you, and buy your own back line the room to deal damage untouched.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Mosstomper Seedling Mosstomper Seedling (450g) + Health Potion Health Potion (50g). That is the full 500 gold you start with; the Refillable Potion Refillable Potion, which refills for free at base, is a first-back purchase and not a start. Mosstomper Seedling is the tank jungle starter: it helps you clear camps and, once fully grown, gives you a shield out of combat and after each large monster you kill.

Core items (in order):

  1. Mosstomper Seedling Mosstomper Seedling — pet companion (auto-evolves around minute 3-4 once it has earned enough XP). Once fully grown it completes the Jungle Quest and grants a shield while you are out of combat and after killing a large monster, which is the version you want on Sejuani because you open fights in melee and want that buffer before the first engage.
  2. Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads — default boots. Grant tenacity (a stat that shortens stuns and slows on you) so Sejuani keeps walking after a chain-CC engage. Swap to Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps vs 3+ AD threats with no hard CC chain.
  3. Hollow Radiance Hollow Radiance — your first big spike. Burn aura ticks damage on nearby enemies and reduces their healing, exactly what you need when standing on top of the enemy carry post-R. Buy every game.
  4. Kaenic Rookern Kaenic Rookern — 400 HP and 80 Magic Resist plus a passive magic shield (a one-use barrier that absorbs magic damage) that builds up after 15 seconds without taking magic hits. You enter every fight with the shield already at full because you spend most of your time clearing camps that deal physical damage.
  5. Jak'Sho, The Protean Jak'Sho, The Protean — late-game tank spike. Stacks Armor and Magic Resist every second in combat (up to 8 stacks for ~30% bonus resists). On Sejuani, who forces the fight to last, this passive is almost always max-stacked when the team commits.

Situational items:

  • Sunfire Aegis Sunfire Aegis — vs melee bruiser-heavy teams (Sett, Darius, Olaf). Burn aura stacks on Hollow Radiance, bonus armor hardens you against frontline focus.
  • Abyssal Mask Abyssal Mask — when 3+ enemies deal magic damage. Reduces magic resist of enemies near you, so every spell on a stunned target hits harder.
  • Thornmail Thornmail — vs AD carries with built-in life-steal (Aatrox, Trundle, Master Yi). Reflects magic damage on every basic attack you receive and applies Wounds (a debuff that reduces healing by 40%) for 3 seconds.
  • Warmog's Armor Warmog's Armor — vs long-range chip damage (Xerath, Varus). Heals you to full HP out of combat after a few seconds, so poke between fights does nothing.
  • Force of Nature Force of Nature — vs heavy AP with chain CC (Anivia, Lissandra, Brand). Slow-resist passive stacks with Frost Armor — you keep moving while other tanks get locked.

Boots: Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads is the default. Plated Steelcaps only into AD-heavy comps with no meaningful CC chain.

Skill order: Max W first (main Frost stacker, AOE clear, your damage source), E second (single-target stun comes online faster), Q last (range and knockup angle do not scale with rank). Put a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Resolve with Aftershock, Font of Life, Conditioning, Overgrowth. Secondary Sorcery with Nimbus Cloak and Transcendence, or swap to Inspiration with Cosmic Insight and Magical Footwear if the enemy team has 2+ Cleanse/QSS users.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Sejuani beats

  • Immobile marksman without a built-in dash

Jinx has no dash and Flame Chompers! (E) is a slow-arming AOE root that does not save her from a long-range engage. Glacial Prison (R) is a 1300-range skill-shot that stuns her in place, then Winter's Wrath (W) plus Permafrost (E) re-stuns her before she can rocket back.

    Jinx
  • Immobile marksman without a built-in dash

Ashe has no dash, only the Frost Shot passive slow on autos. Glacial Prison (R) is easy to land on a target that cannot dodge sideways, and Winter's Wrath (W) stacks Frost on her, so Permafrost (E) re-stuns before Enchanted Crystal Arrow (R) can fire from a safe distance.

    Ashe
  • Grouped AOE channelled teamfighter

Death Lotus (R) is a stationary channel that needs Katarina alive in the middle of the team. Arctic Assault (Q) knocks her up and breaks the channel, and Glacial Prison (R) on the first target plus the AOE slow shuts down Bouncing Blade (Q) reset chains and Shunpo (E) hops.

    Katarina
  • Knockup-dependent windwall user

Arctic Assault (Q) is a body-contact dash, not a projectile — Wind Wall (W) cannot block it. Yasuo needs allied knockups to cast Last Breath (R) and Sejuani's knockup is on her own dash, so he cannot stop the engage and Glacial Prison (R) still hits behind the wall.

    Yasuo
  • Burst assassin jungler

Deceive (Q) empowered crit is the bulk of Shaco's burst and Fury of the North Frost Armor mitigates the hit at full HP. Glacial Prison (R) cancels Hallucinate (R) reposition, and Winter's Wrath (W) stacks Frost so Permafrost (E) finishes him before Jack In The Box (W) detonates.

    Shaco

Champions that beat Sejuani

  • Duelist with parry

Riposte (W) parries Permafrost (E) and reflects the stun back onto Sejuani, and Lunge (Q) plus Bladework (E) keep Fiora sticking outside the 650 Arctic Assault (Q) range. Grand Challenge (R) Vital procs deal percent-HP true damage that shreds Sejuani's stacked armor.

    Fiora
  • Long-range artillery beyond R range

Rite of the Arcane (R) and Arcanopulse (Q) both fire from far beyond Glacial Prison's (R) 1300 cast, and Sejuani has no gap-closer outside the 650 Arctic Assault (Q) dash. The poke chunks her HP before she can ever start a fight, and a missed R is a free 90s of shoving.

    Xerath
  • Marksman with built-in repositioning

Arcane Shift (E) blinks out of Permafrost (E) range the moment Frost stacks hit 3-4, and Mystic Shot (Q) on hit poke keeps Sejuani permanently low. She lands Glacial Prison (R) but cannot follow up with a second stun because the target is already 475 units away.

    Ezreal
  • Kite-clear AP jungler with sleep

The outer ring of Watch Out! Eep! (W) kites Sejuani's 650 Arctic Assault (Q) range and Blooming Blows (Q) gives perma Move Speed stacks. Lilting Lullaby (R) puts the carries Sejuani just engaged into sleep, negating her stacked Frost follow-up window entirely.

    Lillia
  • Reset bruiser jungler with clone

Warrior Trickster (W) drops a stealthed clone that absorbs Glacial Prison (R) instead of Wukong, wasting a 90s ult. Cyclone (R) chains a multi-knockup that interrupts Winter's Wrath (W), and Nimbus Strike (E) dash stays out of Permafrost (E) range.

    Wukong

Key matchups

  • Lee Sin / Elise: Early invade junglers. Place vision wards (the trinket every champion gets at game start, reveals a small area for ~90 seconds) on raptors and red buff. Avoid 1v1s before level 3; your W-stack into E-stun combo needs all three abilities to win a duel, which only happens after a full first clear.
  • Master Yi / Karthus: Scaling junglers who outscale you after minute 25. Force fights and objectives (Drake bot side, Rift Herald top side, Baron later) before minute 20. Use R every time it comes up: a held R is wasted gold compared to a teamfight every 90 seconds.
  • Hecarim / Volibear: Mirror engage but with faster clears and more single-target damage. Do not try to outclear them; play around lane priority (the lane pushing toward the enemy, so the laner can leave for a few seconds) and gank with R whenever it's available.
  • Maokai / Amumu: Tank junglers with their own AOE engage. Whoever lands R first wins the teamfight. Hold yours until after they commit so your stun layers on top of theirs (enemy stays locked through both durations combined), then walk in with Q.
  • Kha'Zix / Rengar: Assassins who jump your back line. Body-block for your carries (stand between the assassin and your damage dealer) — W cone plus Frost Armor punish them for committing near you, and a quick Q flank flips the fight.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3: With Q, W, and E all unlocked, your first gank threat is real. Walk in with Q for the knockup, W to build Frost stacks while basic attacking, then E to re-stun once stacks max out. Pick the lane with the lowest enemy HP and the strongest follow-up CC ally.
  • Level 6: First Glacial Prison. This is your single biggest power swing. Find a fight within 30 seconds of hitting 6 — gank a lane on the side that just lost lane priority (the laner is stuck under his own tower and cannot rotate), contest Scuttle (the river crab that grants vision when killed), or set up the first Drake.
  • Hollow Radiance Hollow Radiance completion (~ minute 12-14): Your AOE damage goes from harmless to a real threat in 5-man brawls. Fighting for Drake or Rift Herald with the burn aura ticking on every contesting enemy wins the objective even when you do not press R at all.
  • 3-item spike (~ minute 22-26): Hollow Radiance + Kaenic Rookern + Jak'Sho online. R cooldown is at 90s rank 3 (105s at rank 2), so you teamfight twice between Baron timers (every Baron has a 5 minute respawn). This is your peak — force every objective.

Common mistakes

  • Throwing Q on cooldown for chip damage. Q is your only gap-closer. Use it to start the fight, not to poke. Spend it on a wave, and when a real fight starts 8 seconds later you are left with no engage tool for another 12 to 18 seconds.
  • Pressing E without Frost stacks up. E does nothing if the target lacks 4 Frost stacks (the icons stack on the HP bar from W swings and R hits). New players press E expecting a stun, and nothing happens at all: the ability goes on cooldown and the target keeps walking. Confirm the icon, then press E.
  • Walking into R range without setup. R has 1300 cast range but you have to see the target. Solo-walking into a bush and firing from fog usually stuns the enemy tank instead of the carry. Wait for vision (laners pinging a target, an ally ward already placed) before you commit.
  • Leaving Frost Armor on cooldown by farming through enemy chip. The passive only refreshes after 8-10 seconds out of combat. Take one poke ability and your Armor and Magic Resist drop until the clock resets. Stop clearing 5 seconds before a fight so the passive is full when you engage.
  • R on the enemy tank instead of the carry. R stuns one champion. The team needs the stun on the back line (marksman or burst mage who deals most of the damage). Use Flash (the Summoner Spell that teleports you a short distance once every ~5 minutes) to flank around the frontline and land R on the carry — never on the closest target.

Advanced tip

Practice the R → E double-stun chain on a target dummy. Cast Glacial Prison first; while the bola is in the air, mash W so the swing lands the instant R connects (R applies max Frost stacks, W adds two more, target over-stacked). The R stun lasts ~1.5-1.75 seconds; queue E on the same target the frame R ends and you re-stun for another second. That is 2.5 seconds of hard CC on one champion from one rotation — long enough for a Caitlyn Ace in the Hole or a Jhin R to dump all four shots. This separates Sejuani mains from generic tank junglers: it removes the enemy carry from a fight, every 90 seconds, for free.
