Core Abilities

Arcane Mastery
Ryze's spells deal extra damage based on his bonus Mana, and his maximum Mana scales up with his Ability Power. Mana is his damage stat — every mana item adds AP and every AP item adds mana.
Overload
Overload
Linear skillshot at 1000 range. Hitting another ability resets Q and charges a rune; with 2 charges Q gains a brief Move Speed burst. Bounces to nearby targets that already have Flux on them.
Rune Prison
Rune Prison
Targeted slow at 615 range. Becomes a root instead of a slow if the target already has Flux from E. Main lock-down tool for the W into Q combo.
Spell Flux
Spell Flux
Targeted single-target debuff at 615 range that spreads Flux to nearby enemies. Sets up the W root, the Q bounce, and the bonus damage on R. Always the opener of the combo.
Realm Warp
Realm Warp
Places a portal nearby. After a few seconds, Ryze and any ally standing on the portal teleport to a target location up to 3000 units away. Win condition tool: cross-map flanks, escapes, and objective swaps.

Why these runes

Sorcery primary: Stormraider's Surge gives the Move Speed the kit lacks once E - W - Q takes 25% of a target's max health in 3 seconds. Manaflow Band feeds the mana the passive converts to damage; Transcendence shortens the cycle; Gathering Storm scales late AP.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery covers HP and mana in the bumpy first 8 minutes before Rod of Ages finishes; Cosmic Insight makes Flash and Realm Warp shorter to refresh between objective rotations.

When to switch secondary

Vs hard burst assassin lanes (Zed, Talon, Fizz) swap Inspiration to Resolve with Bone Plating (eats the first 3 hits of an all-in) and Unflinching (10 armor and magic resist while crowd controlled), which covers the dive itself.

Win Condition

Stack Mana from Rod of Ages and Luden's Echo, then cycle the E into W into Q combo until the bonus mana damage on the passive outscales every other mid laner. Use R to flank or rotate during objective fights.

Weakness

615 range on W and E means no poke without committing close. No dash and no escape — assassins with multiple gap-closers walk inside the combo before E lands. Weak before Rod of Ages stacks (~minute 10).

Overview

Ryze is a battlemage (a mage who fights at mid-range, not from far back) built around stacking Mana, then converting every point of Mana into bonus magic damage through his passive Arcane Mastery. His range on Rune Prison (W) and Spell Flux (E) is 615 — short for a mage — so he plays inside the melee threat zone but with a controlled combo cycle instead of dashes. The cycle is always the same: E spreads Flux to a target and nearby enemies, W roots a Fluxed target instead of slowing, Q (Overload) bounces between Fluxed targets for amplified damage, then the loop resets while the cooldown of Q is refreshed by every other ability cast.

His game plan changes by phase. Early (pre-6): stack Mana with Rod of Ages, take low-risk poke trades, survive matchups he cannot duel yet. Mid game (Rod of Ages stacked): force a fight on the wave bounce, land the combo cycle, snowball into roams. Late game: Realm Warp (R) turns every objective into a 5v3 — Ryze ports himself plus 2-3 allies to a flank and the team cleans up. Survive the 9-10 minute slow start and you out-scale almost every mid laner.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Ring Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potion Health Potions. Doran's mana regen feeds the early combo cycle and the small HP bump helps survive trades before Rod of Ages stacks.

Core items (in order):

  1. Rod of Ages Rod of Ages — first complete item. The cheapest source of Mana, HP, and AP all in one slot. It stacks over 10 minutes (gains stats every minute up to a cap) and is the single biggest power spike on Ryze: when the stacks finish, the passive Arcane Mastery turns every bonus mana point into bonus magic damage.
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration (the item ignores part of the enemy's Magic Resist, so your spells hit harder). Buy after Rod of Ages starts stacking; do not delay further.
  3. Luden's Echo Luden's Echo — second AP and mana spike. The AOE bolt on first cast lines up perfectly with Overload (Q) bouncing between Fluxed targets in a teamfight.
  4. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — the biggest AP (Ability Power, the stat that scales magic damage) multiplier in the game. On Ryze it also amplifies the max-Mana scaling through the passive: more AP means more max Mana, which means more bonus magic damage on every spell.
  5. Shadowflame Shadowflame — 110 ability power and a flat 15 magic penetration that never changes with the target's health. Its Cinderbloom passive makes your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% HP for 20% extra damage. Lines up with finishing off back-line carries (the squishy damage dealers, like ADCs and mages, that your team needs killed first) once Realm Warp drops you on top of them.

Situational items:

  • Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass — vs burst assassins (Zed, Talon, Akali — champions that deal most of their damage in 1-2 seconds). The 2.5-second stasis active (you become invulnerable but cannot move or cast) buys time for W and Q to come back off cooldown after they jump on you.
  • Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil — vs single-target magic CC that breaks the combo cycle (Lissandra R, Annie Q stun, Twisted Fate gold card). One block of a point-and-click hard CC (stuns and roots, as opposed to soft CC like slows) is enough to land the full E - W - Q sequence.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — vs healing-stacking comps (Soraka mid, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo top). Applies Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts the target's healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds), capping their regen.
  • Void Staff Void Staff — swap into the Shadowflame slot the moment a priority target (the enemy your team most needs dead — usually their main carry) buys a Magic Resist item.

Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes is the default. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity (boots that give Ability Haste, making your spell cooldowns shorter) is acceptable if the enemy team has only one Magic Resist source and you want a faster Realm Warp for objective rotations.

Skill order: Max Q (Overload) first (main damage and waveclear), E (Spell Flux) second (the Flux setup that converts W to a root), W (Rune Prison) last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Sorcery with Stormraider's Surge keystone (a keystone is the top, most-impactful rune of a tree; "to proc" a rune means to trigger its effect — Stormraider's procs once you deal 25% of a champion's maximum health in 3 seconds, which the E - W - Q cycle does), Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Gathering Storm. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight, or swap to Resolve with Bone Plating and Second Wind vs hard assassin lanes.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Ryze beats

  • Immobile mage without dash

Baleful Strike (Q) is a skill-shot poke and Event Horizon (E) is a stationary cage — Veigar has no mobility outside flash. Spell Flux (E) into Rune Prison (W) is a guaranteed root, then Overload (Q) bounces between fluxed targets for a clean burst before he can cage Ryze.

    Veigar
  • Short-range melee bruiser

Slice and Dice (E) covers 450 units of dash and Cull the Meek (Q) is melee-only — both fall short of Ryze's 1000-range Overload (Q) poke. Stack mana with Doran's Ring while kiting his Ruthless Predator (W) stun, and the Rod of Ages spike out-trades his fury-bar burst window.

    Renekton
  • Tanky bruiser with one telegraphed engage

Unstoppable Force (R) is his only gap-closer and the dash has a long travel-time telegraph. Spell Flux (E) into Rune Prison (W) roots him the moment the R lands, and Granite Shield only soaks one Overload (Q) before Arcane Mastery's bonus mana damage burns through it.

    Malphite
  • Tanky bruiser with point-and-click silence

Decisive Strike (Q) only silences on the next attack at melee range, and Judgment (E) needs him glued to Ryze to keep spinning. Ryze plays at 615 range so Garen has no gap-closer outside flash, and Rune Prison (W) roots him before Demacian Justice (R) is online.

    Garen
  • Dash-based mage with predictable cooldowns

Abscond/Abduct (E) dashes land Sylas inside Ryze's 615 Spell Flux (E) range, and Chain Lash (Q) is a telegraphed AOE he must commit to. Rune Prison (W) roots him before Kingslayer (W) can heal the trade back, and Realm Warp (R) denies the flank angle he needs for Hijack (R).

    Sylas

Champions that beat Ryze

  • Mobile assassin with multiple gap-closers

Living Shadow (W) plus Death Mark (R) double-dash blink onto Ryze inside the 615 cast range during the Rune Prison (W) windup. Razor Shuriken (Q) pokes from 900 while Ryze stacks mana, and the Contempt for the Weak passive amplifies the kill threshold on low-HP backs.

    Zed
  • Mobile assassin with stealth and resets

Shuriken Flip (E) plus Perfect Execution (R) double-dash blink onto Ryze inside 615 cast range, and Twilight Shroud (W) makes her unselectable, so targeted Rune Prison (W) cannot even be cast at her. Five Point Strike (Q) energy refunds keep her sticking on the next combo cycle.

    Akali
  • Long-range artillery mage

Arcanopulse (Q) charges to outrange Overload (Q), and Eye of Destruction (W) at 1000 plus Shocking Orb (E) at 1050 chain a slow-stun from outside his 615 cast range. The poke forces him to back before Rod of Ages stacks, and Rite of the Arcane (R) chunks from screen distance.

    Xerath
  • Point-and-click hard CC mage

Frozen Tomb (R) is a point-and-click stun-self-stasis that drops Ryze before he can finish the Spell Flux (E) into Rune Prison (W) combo. Glacial Path (E) reactivates as a teleport and Ring of Frost (W) is an AOE root that catches the short Ryze cast range every trade.

    Lissandra
  • Point-blank burst assassin-mage hybrid

Audacity (E) dashes onto Ryze at 615 range and Elemental Wrath / Edge of Ixtal (Q) empowers a wave clear plus burst combo that out-trades the Spell Flux (E) cast time. Terrashape (W) speed plus Supreme Display of Talent (R) river knock-up flip any teamfight angle.

    Qiyana

Key matchups

  • Veigar: Even pre-6 trades, easy after. His Event Horizon (E) is the only stun in the kit, and Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes lets you walk around the perimeter. After he commits the cage, E - W - Q roots him for full burst before his Q (Baleful Strike) stacks the kill.
  • Zed: Threat champion. Rush Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass as your second completed item after Rod of Ages. Use stasis the second his ultimate marker lands — by the time he can move again, W is back up to root him for the trade.
  • Xerath: Hard matchup. He pokes from beyond your Q range. Give up some CS (creep score: gold from killed minions) under tower, ping your jungler for early ganks, and roam to bot lane at level 6 with Realm Warp — you cannot win the 1v1 in lane.
  • Yasuo / Yone: Yasuo's Wind Wall (W) blocks Q and E; Yone's W is the Spirit Cleave shield instead. Save the combo for when Yasuo's W is on cooldown; until then, push the wave for prio (priority: vantage in lane that lets you leave without losing resources). Once Wind Wall is down, E - W roots them through the third Q dash and Q bounces clean off the wave's Fluxed minions.
  • Annie: Pre-6 matchup is even — she has stacks but you have range. After 6, Tibbers + Q stun is a guaranteed kill if she lands the first ability. Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil at item 3 is the answer; it blocks her Disintegrate (Q) stun once and that one block is enough to combo her down first.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: With Q and one point in E, the first poke loop comes online. E the wave, Q bounces to the enemy laner — small chip, no commit needed.
  • Level 6: Realm Warp (R) unlocks. Even without a kill threat, you can recall, then Realm Warp port back to lane in 2 seconds, denying the enemy a free push or roam.
  • Rod of Ages Rod of Ages stacks complete (~ minute 18-20): The biggest spike on Ryze. The passive now converts ~1500 bonus mana into bonus magic damage on every spell. Force a fight on the next objective — Drake or Herald — and look to chain the combo on a clumped enemy team.
  • Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 26-30): Late-game ceiling. A full E - W - Q rotation now bursts a back-line target through one Magic Resist item. Group as 5, use Realm Warp to flank, and bait the enemy to face the wrong direction.

Common mistakes

  • Casting W before E. Without Flux on the target, Rune Prison is just a slow. Combo order is E first, then W to convert slow into root, then Q for damage. Reverse it and you give up the root.
  • Holding Q for the perfect bounce. Overload has a 5-second cooldown that resets on any other ability cast. Spam it on every safe window — it is the cheapest button in your kit and your main waveclear.
  • Using Realm Warp as a Flash. R has a 2-second channel before the teleport fires. It is not an escape; it is a setup tool. Cast it before the fight, not during.
  • Standing in front of the minion wave. Your lockdown range is 615 — shorter than most mids. If you walk forward to last-hit, you eat poke. Hit minions from behind the line; step up only to commit the full combo.

Advanced tip

Practice double-Overload by chaining E - Q - W - Q: Spell Flux resets Overload, the first Q fires, then Rune Prison resets the cooldown again and the second Q lands on a now-rooted target for the full bounce damage. Most Ryze players cast E - W - Q and miss the second Q window entirely. The double-Q burst converts neutral trades into kill threats from level 4 onward — the single biggest skill gate between a snowball Ryze and a passive farm Ryze.
