Core Abilities

Spiked Shell
Rammus gains bonus Attack Damage that scales with his Armor and Magic Resistance. Every defensive item you buy also buffs your basic-attack damage.
Powerball
Powerball
Rammus rolls into a ball, gaining huge Move Speed that ramps up over 2 seconds. The first enemy hit takes magic damage, is knocked back and stunned for 0.4s; nearby targets are slowed. Your only gap-closer and engage tool.
Defensive Ball Curl
Defensive Ball Curl
Timed defensive stance: large Armor and Magic Resistance bonus while it lasts, and any enemy that basic-attacks you takes magic damage back. Recast to end it early. You keep moving normally the whole time.
Frenzying Taunt
Frenzying Taunt
Target an enemy champion or jungle monster: they are forced to walk toward Rammus and basic-attack him for 1.2s at rank 1, up to 2s at rank 5. Those attacks feed straight into W's reflect.
Soaring Slam
Soaring Slam
Rammus leaps to a target area and slams down, dealing magic damage and slowing. If cast while Powerball is active, enemies near the impact center are knocked up instead — Q + R becomes a flashy AOE crowd control combo.

Why these runes

Resolve primary: Aftershock procs the instant Frenzying Taunt connects, stacking armor and MR on top of Defensive Ball Curl. Font of Life heals you and an ally on every taunt, Conditioning adds resists past min 12, Overgrowth turns long games into 150-200 free HP.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Magical Footwear saves 300g on tier 1 boots so you can rush Hollow Radiance faster, and Cosmic Insight cuts Flash and Smite cooldown — both matter for ganks (extra Flash + Q windows) and for objective stealing on Drake and Baron.

When to switch secondary

Vs an AD-heavy enemy team (3+ basic-attack damage dealers), swap Inspiration → Precision with Triumph (heals and pays gold on takedown) + Legend: Alacrity (attack speed per stack); for tenacity use the third stat shard (15% tenacity and slow resist) or Mercury's Treads.

Win Condition

Roll Powerball from fog into a key target to stun them, follow with R mid-roll so Soaring Slam knocks up the group, then taunt the closest auto-attacker into your W reflect while your team cleans up.

Weakness

Powerball wind-up telegraphs engages to alert teams. Out of Q, Rammus has zero ranged threat and one lock per fight — kited comps and magic-burst teams ignore his armor wall.

Overview

Rammus is the simplest tank jungler with the most punishing identity: he rolls in, locks the most dangerous auto-attacker into his armor wall, and lets them basic-attack themselves to death. Powerball (Q) is a wind-up dash that rolls as far as you keep it going, up to 6 seconds of channel: the first enemy hit is knocked back 125 units, stunned for 0.4 seconds and slowed along with everyone nearby. Frenzying Taunt (E) forces a target to walk into Rammus and auto-attack him for 1.2s at rank 1, up to 2s at rank 5, and Defensive Ball Curl (W) reflects magic damage on every basic attack he takes during that window. The harder a carry hits, the harder they hurt themselves.

The trade-off: zero ranged threat outside Q and a kit built around a single 1v1 lock. Magic-damage burst teams bypass the armor wall, and skilled enemies side-step the predictable Q roll. Game plan: full clear, hit level 6, gank a lane with priority every 90s, translate every taunt into a kill.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Mosstomper Seedling Mosstomper Seedling (450g) + 1 Health Potion (50g), which is exactly the 500 gold you start with. Mosstomper Seedling is the jungle starter (its companion attacks the monsters you fight, speeding up every camp). The Refillable Potion Refillable Potion is a first-back purchase, not a start: it is a healing item that refills for free at base, saving gold on chip damage from camps (the neutral monster groups you farm).

Core items (in order):

  1. Mosstomper Seedling Mosstomper Seedling — pet companion. It grows on treats, one per large monster plus one on a timer; the first upgrade needs 15 and the final one, the only one that matters here, needs 35. That last evolution consumes the item and leaves Mosstomper's Courage: a 200-360 shield (based on level) that lasts until broken and refreshes after every camp you clear or after 10 seconds out of combat, plus 10% more damage to non-epic monsters and 50% less damage from them. The permanent shield is what lets you open a fight already at full effective HP, which is exactly what a W-based duel wants.
  2. Hollow Radiance Hollow Radiance — your most important first full item. Magic damage aura stacks with Defensive Ball Curl, so every second a taunted target stands next to you is extra damage. Health and Magic Resist also harden you against AP burst.
  3. Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps — default boots vs AD-heavy teams. They block a flat % of basic-attack damage, exactly the damage type your W is designed to bait. Swap to Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads vs 2+ hard CC or magic-damage teams — tenacity (a stat that shortens stuns and slows) keeps you mobile after engaging.
  4. Sunfire Aegis Sunfire Aegis — adds an Immolate burn aura on top of Hollow Radiance, so a taunted target eats two AOE damage sources at once (AOE = area of effect, damage on a zone). Health and Armor scale W's bonus higher (Spiked Shell converts both into bonus AD). Since patch 26.16 it costs 2800 gold, the same as Hollow Radiance, and the burn scales on 1.5% of bonus Health instead of 1%. The break-even point against monsters is around 570 bonus Health. Hollow Radiance and Sunfire together already give you 750, so in this build the aura clears camps faster than before, not slower. With the two auras priced identically, the order between them is decided by the enemy damage type — Hollow Radiance first for the Magic Resist, Sunfire first only against a fully basic-attack team where you want the Armor early.
  5. Jak'Sho, The Protean Jak'Sho, The Protean — late-game tank capstone. After 5 seconds of champion combat your bonus Armor and bonus Magic Resist go up by 30% until the fight ends. It rewards staying in the fight, not entering it, which is exactly what a taunt build does: perfect for sitting on top of your carry in long 5v5 teamfights.

Situational items:

  • Frozen Heart Frozen Heart — vs AD auto-attack carries (Master Yi, Tryndamere, Jinx). Big armor block plus an aura that slows attack speed of every enemy near you — they hit your W reflect slower.
  • Abyssal Mask Abyssal Mask — vs 2+ AP champions. Nearby enemy champions take 12% more magic damage, which multiplies both your own Hollow Radiance ticks and everything your AP teammate lands on the taunted target.
  • Randuin's Omen Randuin's Omen — vs crit-based ADCs (Yasuo, Yone, Tryndamere). Active slows nearby enemies by 70% Move Speed for 2 seconds; passive cuts critical strike damage taken by 30%.
  • Dead Man's Plate Dead Man's Plate — vs kite-heavy comps. Shipwrecker builds up to 20 bonus Move Speed while you walk and discharges it as bonus physical damage on your next attack. It closes gaps, it does not stick to the target: the sticking is still the taunt.
  • Warmog's Armor Warmog's Armor — after first 2 items into long siege fights. Massive HP plus out-of-combat regen lets you spam Q engages without basing.

Boots: Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps default. Mercury's Treads vs 2+ hard CC chains or pure AP damage.

Skill order: Max Q first (lower cooldown, faster engage), W second (bigger reflect), E last (cooldown does not change with rank). Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Resolve with Aftershock (activates when you taunt with E, bonus armor and magic resist for 2.5s; the engage rune of the game), Font of Life (each time you impair an enemy's movement, you and the lowest-health ally nearby heal), Conditioning (extra resists after minute 12), Overgrowth (3 permanent Health for every 8 minions or monsters that die near you: roughly 150-200 HP by the late game, plus 3.5% max Health once you pass 120 absorbed). Secondary Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free tier-1 boots at minute 12) and Cosmic Insight (lower Flash and Smite cooldowns).

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Rammus beats

  • Auto-attack reliant true-damage skirmisher jungler

Frenzying Taunt forces Master Yi to basic-attack into Defensive Ball Curl reflect, and Wuju Style true damage autos feed the magic-damage reflect at maximum rate. Alpha Strike multi-target dash cannot save him during the taunt window.

    Master Yi
  • Crit-stacking unstoppable melee duelist

Frenzying Taunt forces Tryndamere to basic-attack into Defensive Ball Curl reflect, and Bloodlust-stacked crit autos feed the magic-damage reflect at double rate. Spinning Slash dash repositions him but does not break the taunt.

    Tryndamere
  • Stance-shifting on-hit fighter jungler

Frenzying Taunt forces Udyr to basic-attack into Defensive Ball Curl reflect, and Wilding Claw on-hit procs feed the magic-damage reflect every swing. Iron Mantle cannot absorb his own reflected damage.

    Udyr
  • Reset auto-chain skirmisher jungler

Frenzying Taunt forces Viego to basic-attack into Defensive Ball Curl reflect, and Sovereign's Domination passive auto procs plus Blade of the Ruined King passive on-hits feed the magic-damage reflect every swing.

    Viego
  • Transforming auto-empowered bruiser jungler

Frenzying Taunt forces Kayn to basic-attack into Defensive Ball Curl reflect, and Rhaast-form empowered autos feed the magic-damage reflect every swing. Shadow Step wall-dash bypasses Powerball wind-up.

    Kayn

Champions that beat Rammus

  • Global-execute AP scaling jungler

Karthus's Requiem R is global magic damage Rammus cannot avoid by rolling away, bypassing Defensive Ball Curl armor entirely. Lay Waste targeted bursts ignore his armor stack as magic damage, and Defile AoE channel ticks through his W reflect without taking damage back.

    Karthus
  • AoE bouncing-fire AP support or jungler

Brand's Pyroclasm R bounces between teammates, applying Blaze stacks that detonate burn damage on Rammus and his team, bypassing Defensive Ball Curl armor. Pillar of Flame zones his Powerball roll path.

    Brand
  • Stealth ambush AP jungler

Fiddlesticks's Crowstorm R AoE-ticks magic damage in range, bypassing Defensive Ball Curl armor entirely. Terrify fear cancels Frenzying Taunt mid-cast, and A Harmless Scarecrow passive lets him impersonate a ward and ambush Rammus during his slow Powerball wind-up.

    Fiddlesticks
  • Dragon-form AoE-magic AP jungler

Shyvana's magic damage bypasses Defensive Ball Curl armor and ticks on Rammus regardless of his W stack. Dragon's Descent R grants area magic damage on every auto, so he keeps taking damage he cannot reflect while his armor stack does nothing for him.

    Shyvana
  • Sleep-AoE ranged AP jungler

Lillia's Lilting Lullaby R puts Rammus to sleep, canceling Frenzying Taunt setup before he engages. Blooming Blows AoE magic damage stacks on his entire team, bypassing Defensive Ball Curl armor, and Dream-Laden Bough true-damage burst scales per second of sleep chase.

    Lillia

Key matchups

  • Master Yi / Tryndamere: Your ideal pick-into matchups. Both rely on basic attacks and have no ranged tool — Frenzying Taunt is a death sentence. Highlander (R) makes Yi immune to slows but not to disables, so the taunt still holds; Alpha Strike (Q) is the real problem, because it makes him untargetable mid-cast — taunt after it lands, not before. Against Tryndamere, taunt him inside Undying Rage (R) so Bloodlust (Q) heals him straight into your W reflect. Buy Frozen Heart Frozen Heart second item.
  • Karthus / Brand: Hard counter matchups. AP damage ignores your armor and Karthus's Requiem (R) is a global tick that hits even through W. Brand punishes the roll itself: Sear (Q) stuns you the moment you are carrying a Blaze stack, and Pyroclasm (R) bounces through your whole team while you stand still taunting. Stay grouped, ward jungle entrances (placed items that reveal a small map area for ~90s), force fights before minute 18. Rush Hollow Radiance Hollow Radiance then Abyssal Mask Abyssal Mask vs two AP threats.
  • Lee Sin / Elise: Early-game junglers who invade your weak side. Sonic Wave (Q) starts every Lee Sin play and Dragon's Rage (R) kicks you out of your own follow-up; Elise opens on Cocoon (E) and leaves on Rappel (spider E) before the taunt lands. Powerball is the fastest disengage in the game — if you see them at your raptors, roll out toward your laners. Avoid 1v1s pre-3; full clear (kill every camp once) and look at scuttle (the river crab that grants vision when killed).
  • Olaf: Problem matchup. Ragnarok (R) makes him immune to disables while he keeps attacking, so taunt does not stick during his R, and Reckless Swing (E) deals true damage that ignores every resist you stacked. Bait his R first, then taunt when it expires. Your W still reflects his autos during the window.
  • Fiora: Problem matchup. Riposte (W) parries the Powerball stun and stuns you on the way back, and Grand Challenge (R) turns every resist you stacked into percent-HP true damage. Bait the parry with a fake Q (cancel by pressing Q again before the roll commits), or Q from a 90-degree side angle.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3: With Q, W, and E unlocked, your first gank threat is real. Look at the lane with the lowest enemy HP and an ally who can follow up CC; one Q stun into E taunt under a snowballing (a vantage that grows over time: kill → gold → item → more kill) ally is usually a kill.
  • Level 6: First Soaring Slam. Use Q + R together: the moment Powerball connects, press R mid-roll — the slam knocks up everyone near the impact center for a teamwide AOE crowd control combo. Find a fight within 30 seconds of hitting 6 — gank a lane, contest scuttle, or set up the first Drake.
  • Hollow Radiance Hollow Radiance completion (~ minute 12-14): Your W aura goes from soak-only to real damage threat. Fighting for Drake or Rift Herald with Hollow Radiance ticking wins the objective without your team needing extra damage.
  • 3-item spike (~ minute 22-26): Mosstomper + Hollow Radiance + Sunfire online. Two stacked damage auras plus your W reflect means a single taunt kills most squishies if your team auto-attacks them once. Force every objective: this is the window where you can start a fight without waiting for your team to be ready.

Common mistakes

  • Pressing Q from open vision. Powerball has a wind-up where you accelerate visibly and the enemy hears the rolling sound. From open vision, every laner Flashes or dashes out before you connect. Always start Q from a fog of war angle (the unseen part of the map outside ally vision) — tri-brush, river bush, or behind the enemy wave.
  • Taunting the tank instead of the carry. Frenzying Taunt is your single lockdown tool, 12s cooldown. Taunting the enemy tank wastes it on a target with no auto-attack damage. Always taunt the ADC or AP carry whose autos feed your W reflect.
  • Toggling W on too early. Defensive Ball Curl runs for a fixed duration on a 7-second cooldown, so an early press wastes both. Engage with Q first, taunt, then W.
  • Forcing engages without follow-up. Rammus has no real burst on his own — the kit is built to keep an enemy locked while your team kills them. Powerballing into a 1v1 vs a fed carry with no ally in range means you taunt them and they kill you while you stand still. Wait until at least one ally is within 800 units before pressing E.
  • Ignoring Q as a disengage. Q is your fastest movement tool by far. If you are caught in your own jungle, press Q the other way and roll out — full Powerball Move Speed beats most chase tools. The same roll that starts a fight is the one that gets you out of it.

Advanced tip

Practice the Flash + Q reorientation trick on a target dummy. Powerball locks you into a fixed direction once it reaches full speed, but you can press Flash mid-roll to instantly snap your trajectory. A Q rolling top-side along the river can Flash 90 degrees inward to hit a backline carry stepping up for a wave — the enemy has no time to react because the visible roll was pointed elsewhere. Chained into Soaring Slam (R) right after the Flash, this is the highest-impact engage in the kit: a full-speed Powerball plus 425 units of Flash plus an R knock-up on the carry, all under 1.5 seconds. It is what separates a player who knows the champion from one who only knows the combo.
