Resolve primary: Grasp procs every 4 seconds on melee AA — fits the Q-AA loop for free HP and trade healing. Demolish punishes any wall touch for big plate damage, Bone Plating eats Riven/Irelia combos, Overgrowth converts watched minions into HP.
Precision secondary: Triumph refunds HP on every kill or assist (saves dive attempts under tower) and Coup de Grace adds bonus damage to targets under 40% HP — relevant because your Heroic Charge wall stun lands the killing blow on a fleeing low-HP enemy.
Vs lanes with no all-in pressure (Singed, Teemo) where Grasp will not proc, swap secondary to Inspiration with Magical Footwear plus Cosmic Insight. Vs heavy AP burst, take Force of Nature earlier instead of changing your secondary tree.
Win Condition
Deny enemy dashes with Steadfast Presence, wall-stun with Heroic Charge for kills, then group mid-game to peel for carries by grounding any diver who steps near you.
Weakness
No ranged tools — Heroic Charge fails on open ground without a wall, and Hammer Shock barely outranges a melee minion. Hard-countered by ranged top laners who poke you out before you can engage.
Overview
Poppy is a tank and vanguard (a durable frontline whose job is to start fights and absorb them, not to out-damage the enemy laner) built around two anti-engage tools. Steadfast Presence (W) stops enemy dashes outright, grounding the diver and slowing them. Heroic Charge (E) is a dash that pushes the target backward — if that push collides with a wall, the target is stunned. Hammer Shock (Q) is a short-range, two-tick swing for trades and last-hits; Keeper's Verdict (R) is a two-mode ultimate that can either short-knockback (quick cast) or charge up into a map-spanning knockaway (full channel).
Top lane suits her because the side lane has walls everywhere — every river edge, tri-bush corner, and alcove turns Heroic Charge into a stun setup. The game plan: bait the enemy's dash, W to deny it, E them into terrain, Q-AA-AA rotation under Grasp of the Undying. Mid-game, group for objectives — your R quick-cast resets bad enemy engages and your wall-stun E sets up your jungler. Late-game, your role is peel (protect your own carry): one W turns off a diver entirely.
Recommended Build
Starting items: Doran's Shield + 1 Health Potion is the default — soaks early auto-attack harass and pairs with Grasp of the Undying for trade healing. The 26.16 rework leaned this start further: base health regeneration is 4 per 5 seconds now, and the early levels are about holding the wave until your first tank item rather than out-hitting the laner. Take Doran's Ring only if you're forced into the rare AP burst variant against a heavy magic-damage lane.
Core items (in order):
Plated Steelcaps — early Armor and reduced auto-attack damage. Default top boots vs AD opponents (most top laners are physical damage).
Sunfire Aegis — HP, Armor, and an immolation aura. The aura ticks during your Hammer Shock trades and helps you shove the wave for tempo. It costs 2800 gold since 26.16, up from 2700, so plan the back around the finished item and not the components.
Jak'Sho, The Protean — Gives 350 health, 45 armor and 45 magic resist. Voidborn Resilience gains a stack per second in champion combat and at 5 stacks raises your bonus armor and bonus magic resist by 30% until combat ends. It front-loads in the first five seconds and then holds, which lines up with the moment your W aura expires and the fight becomes a straight brawl.
Thornmail — vs auto-attack carries (ADCs, Yasuo, Jax). Reflects damage and applies Grievous Wounds (cuts enemy healing by 40%) on hit.
Spirit Visage — Magic Resist, HP, and amplified healing from all sources (Grasp procs, summoner shields, ally heals).
Situational items:
Mercury's Treads — boots swap vs AP-heavy enemy teams (3+ magic damage threats) or heavy hard CC chains (multiple stuns and roots in a row).
Heartsteel — first-item alternative when the lane is melee bruiser (Sett, Darius, Mundo) and you can safely melee them through Grasp procs to stack the HP passive.
Randuin's Omen — vs crit-stacking carries (Yasuo + Caitlyn, Tryndamere top): the passive cuts critical strike damage taken.
Unending Despair — vs AD teams that surround you in fights (Master Yi, Tryndamere, Jax) — 50 armor, plus 3% of your bonus health in magic damage to nearby enemies every 4 seconds, healing you for 250% of it.
Force of Nature — vs squads with two strong magic damage dealers (Brand + Syndra, Cassiopeia + Karma) for layered Magic Resist plus stacking Move Speed when hit by magic damage.
Boots:
Plated Steelcaps is the default into AD lanes. Swap to
Mercury's Treads when the enemy team has 3+ AP threats or heavy hard CC. Boots of Swiftness are acceptable into kite-heavy comps (Vayne + Kalista) where closing the gap matters more than resists.
Skill order: Max Q (Hammer Shock) first — lower cooldown, double-tick area, and the one number in the kit that grows where it counts. Since 26.16 each tick deals 7 / 7.5 / 8 / 8.5 / 9% of the target's maximum Health per rank, where it used to be a flat 9% at every rank, so ranking Q is now the difference between chipping the enemy tank and not. Do not rank Q for the slow: in the same patch it went from 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% to 20 / 23 / 26 / 29 / 32%, but it also gained a new term, +8% per 1000 bonus health. At rank 5 you are back to the old 40% as soon as you own 1000 bonus health, which on this build is around your second tank item, so the slow follows your tank items and not your skill points. With base attack damage down to 56 and the Q's bonus attack damage ratio cut from 100% to 75% in the same patch, the kills come from the wall stun rather than from the auto exchange. Max E (Heroic Charge) second, W last — its active duration is fine at rank 1, and the passive is already at full strength there: 16% of your total Armor and Magic Resist since 26.16, up from 12%, doubled to 32% below 40% Health. Mana is no longer the limit on that pattern — 300 base growing 45 per level, up from 280 and 40. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Resolve with Grasp of the Undying (every 4 seconds in melee combat your next AA deals bonus magic damage and heals you — perfect for the Q-AA loop), Demolish, Bone Plating, Overgrowth. Secondary Precision with Triumph and Coup de Grace. Stat shards: Adaptive Force / Adaptive Force / Health.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Poppy beats
Dash-reliant Wind Wall skirmisher top
Yasuo's Sweeping Blade gets grounded by Steadfast Presence mid-cast, dropping him slowed and unable to chain Steel Tempest tornado. Wind Wall does not stop Heroic Charge, and any wall turns that dash into a stun that wins the trade before Yasuo can answer.
YasuoMark-reset dash duelist top
Irelia's Bladesurge dash gets grounded by Steadfast Presence mid-cast, denying her the mark-reset chain her DPS depends on. Defiant Dance damage reduction cannot save her from Heroic Charge wall-stun follow-up, and Flawless Duet stun cannot fire on a grounded target.
IreliaThree-cast Broken Wings combo duelist
Riven's Broken Wings third cast dash gets grounded by Steadfast Presence mid-air, dropping her slowed and unable to chain Valor shield or Ki Burst stun. A Heroic Charge into any top lane wall stuns her long enough to win the trade.
RivenSoul-Unbound twin-blade skirmisher
Yone's Soul Unbound E forward dash gets grounded by Steadfast Presence mid-cast, leaving him stranded with no return blink. Mortal Steel tornado cannot fire while slowed, and Heroic Charge wall-stun against terrain locks him for the trade.
YoneWall-anchored Hookshot bruiser
Camille's Hookshot anchors to a wall on cast and her engage path lines her up with terrain — Heroic Charge gets a guaranteed wall-stun follow-up against the same wall she just anchored to.
Camille
Champions that beat Poppy
True-damage tumble ADC top
Tumble is a dash, so Steadfast Presence does stop it, but Tumble is back every 6 seconds at rank 1 and every 2 seconds at rank 5, while Steadfast Presence comes back only every 20. Poppy cannot deny them all. Silver Bolts true damage chews through her Armor stacks in between.
VayneMark-stacking ranged shuriken top
Thundering Shuriken pokes from 950 range against a 475 Heroic Charge, and Lightning Rush gives 100% Move Speed to leave before Poppy closes. He stays targetable throughout, so what beats her here is distance and not immunity.
KennenParry duelist top laner
Fiora's Riposte parries Heroic Charge and reflects the stun back onto Poppy, cancelling her single committed engage. Duelist's Dance vital procs deal true damage that ignores Poppy's Armor stacks every few seconds.
FioraResist-stealing chomp bruiser top
Subjugate drains 40% of Poppy's current Armor and Magic Resist, the exact stats she stacks, and the cut lingers 4 seconds after the drain. Pillar of Ice reshapes the terrain Heroic Charge needs, and Frozen Domain hands him attack speed and 25% more healing.
TrundleStealth blind poke kiter top
Blinding Dart blanks the autos that carry Iron Ambassador, so Poppy loses her shield pickup and her Grasp proc while Hammer Shock keeps landing for chip only. Noxious Trap mushrooms then cover the wall angles Heroic Charge needs.
Teemo
Key matchups
- Yasuo / Yone: Favorable.
Plated Steelcaps plus
Thornmail rush wrecks their auto-attack pattern. Hold W until they commit to Sweeping Blade (E) — pop it as they dash in and they get grounded mid-air. Don't waste W on a minion-to-minion dash. - Fiora: Hard counterpick. Her Riposte (W) parries your E and reflects the stun back. Do not open with E while her W is up: bait it with an auto-attack or with the Iron Ambassador buckler first, then charge once Riposte is on cooldown (24 seconds at rank 1, 16 at rank 5). Never let her hit a vital on you.
- Camille: Even matchup. Her Hookshot (E) anchors on a wall — wait for the second cast, then E her into the same wall she just used. Whoever lands their wall stun first wins the trade.
- Vayne: Hard counterpick. Tumble (Q) is a dash, so Steadfast Presence (W) does stop it — the problem is that Tumble is back every 6 seconds at rank 1 and every 2 at rank 5, while Steadfast Presence (W) is on a 20-second cooldown. You cannot deny them all: spend W on the Tumble that takes her out of Heroic Charge (E) range, not on the one she uses to reposition on the wave. In between she kites you with Silver Bolts (W) true damage. Farm under tower, call your jungler at level 3.
- Darius: Survivable. Stay outside his Decimate (Q) edge for the first 3 levels — the straight auto exchange is no longer yours, so the answer is terrain. Once you hit level 4-5, Heroic Charge (E) him into the tri-bush wall during his Apprehend (E) pull; he commits forward, you wall-stun, and the Hammer Shock (Q) second tick plus Grasp procs do the rest.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2 (W + E): First major spike, and it is now a crowd-control spike rather than a damage one. With W to deny their dash and E to set up the wall stun, you can still punish any over-extended melee opponent, but on 56 base attack damage the follow-up rarely kills on its own: if Riven walks up to last-hit at low HP, E her into the lane wall and finish with Ignite or a jungler, not with three autos.
- Level 6: Keeper's Verdict unlocks. Quick cast becomes a fast knockback, which does cancel cast-time ultimates like Garen's Demacian Justice (0.435s cast). It does nothing against instant self-buffs like Tryndamere's Undying Rage, which has no cast time and can be used while he is crowd controlled; full charge can still save a teammate across the river. Most kills come from quick-cast R into a follow-up E.
Sunfire Aegis completion (~ minute 12-14): First tank power spike, and at 2800 gold it now lands at the late end of that window. You can dive bot lane or mid through tower with W active to negate their escape dash, then survive 2-3 tower shots while your team finishes the kill. Until it is done you are a laner with tank stats and no tank item, so hold the wave near your tower.
Jak'Sho, The Protean online (~ minute 18-22): Mid-game peak. Stacking-resist passive turns the 2 seconds of W active into the window where the enemy engage simply does not arrive. Group with the team for Dragon and Baron — your E sets up flanks, your R counter-engages anyone diving the carries.
Common mistakes
- Holding W too long, then never using it. Steadfast Presence active is on 20 seconds at rank 1 and only drops to 12 when you finish maxing it, which with this skill order is level 18. That is still one denial per skirmish, so spend it on any meaningful dash — Yasuo Sweeping Blade, Irelia Bladesurge, even a Lee Sin Q-2 in your direction — instead of holding it for the perfect one.
- E without a wall in mind. Heroic Charge in open lane just pushes the enemy backward harmlessly. Before you press E, locate the nearest wall in your dash path (the line from you, through the target). Open jungle entrance, tri-bush, river wall — pick one, then engage.
- R-flashing on a single target in lane. Keeper's Verdict has a long cooldown and is most valuable for team-fight disengage or saving a carry. A full-charge R on a 1v1 kill in lane gives up a 5-man impact for a single kill.
- Maxing W or E first. Poppy's trade pattern lives on Q (Hammer Shock) — two ticks of damage scaled to the target's maximum Health, and that percentage is the only thing in her kit that climbs meaningfully per rank (7% up to 9%). Always max Q first: it is the only thing in the kit whose percentage of target maximum health climbs per rank (7% to 9%, twice per cast). E is the second max and it is not flat either: the wall stun grows from 1.6 to 2.0 seconds and the damage from 40 to 120 per hit. W is last because the passive resists are already at full value from rank 1 and the active duration is a fixed 2 seconds.
- Treating the Iron Ambassador buckler as something you can come back for. It only sits on the ground for 4 seconds, and an enemy champion who walks over it destroys it. The shield is worth 11% to 20% of your maximum health for 3 seconds, so decide immediately: either the path to it is safe and you take it now, or you write it off. Aim the empowered attack so the buckler falls on your side of the wave, not theirs.
Advanced tip
Master the E-Flash stun combo. Press E onto a target who is not near a wall — they start moving backward from the push. Mid-push, Flash to the side or behind the target. The push direction stays in your original facing, which lets you angle the push into a wall the enemy didn't think they were near (a jungle entrance ledge, the alcove behind Baron, a sliver of river terrain). Practice in Practice Tool — it's the single highest-impact mechanic Poppy has, turning any open-ground enemy into a guaranteed pick.
