Resolve primary: Grasp procs every 4 seconds in melee trades, healing you and stacking permanent HP that compounds with Living Forge's bonus resists. Demolish punishes plates after engage, Conditioning unlocks late tank scaling, Overgrowth turns farmed minions into permanent HP.
Inspiration secondary: Magical Footwear gives free base boots at minute 12, 45 seconds sooner per takedown (saves the 300 gold of Boots). Cosmic Insight cuts Flash and item active cooldowns - critical for Randuin's Omen timing in fights.
If the enemy team has 3+ AP threats (champions whose damage scales with Ability Power), swap Inspiration to Sorcery with Manaflow Band (mana sustain in lane) and Transcendence (5 ability haste at level 5 and 5 more at level 8; ability haste has no 40% ceiling).
Win Condition
Use Q pillars to set up E knock-ups and W Brittle, engage with R recast on objectives, and forge masterwork items for allies to out-scale the enemy team late game.
Weakness
Slow base movement and no built-in escape. Hard countered by ranged poke and percent-HP true damage that bleeds your front line down before you can engage.
Overview
Ornn is a melee tank engager built around three loops: setting up a knock-up (a small toss into the air that interrupts everything the enemy is doing) with Q pillar plus E, applying Brittle with W, and forging masterwork items in lane for himself and his team. The passive Living Forge is the single most important mechanic to understand — it does two things at once. First, every point of Armor and Magic Resist you build gives you bonus Armor and MR on top, so stacking defensive items gets disproportionately strong. Second, you can shop without recalling (going back to base): Ornn never wastes a wave walking to base, and at champion level 13 Living Forge automatically upgrades the first eligible Legendary item in Ornn's own inventory into its Masterwork version, worth 1000 gold of extra stats. From level 14 to level 17, once per level and once per ally per game, he can walk within 600 units of a teammate and forge the same upgrade on the first eligible Legendary item they own: four allies, four more 1000-gold upgrades, 5000 gold of value the enemy team never gets. That is why a fed Ornn (one who has racked up early kills and gold lead) snowballs the whole map, not just his own lane.
The game plan is "engage on your terms, stay alive, and feed your team upgrades." In lane, drop Q at last-hit range (the moment a minion is low enough to be killed by one of your basic attacks for gold) to poke (chip the enemy's HP from a safe distance) and zone (occupy space so they cannot walk in to farm). Then chain Q-E-W-AA when the enemy steps into the pillar. From minute 6 onward, R turns every river skirmish (the river is the area separating the lanes) into a setup window — you ult from fog of war (the unwarded gray area on the map), recast E to charge into the elemental, and the redirected hit knocks up everyone it touches across the line. Late game your job is frontline (the role of being the first body in a fight, soaking damage so the squishy carries — fragile high-damage teammates — behind you can position safely). You walk in first, eat the engage, and let your Living Forge resists drag out the fight while your team kills theirs.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Doran's Shield +
Health Potion. Doran's Shield regen is the strongest early sustain item in any melee top matchup, and its passive (extra healing from minion damage) lets Ornn auto-tank early waves while shopping in lane via Living Forge.
Core items (in order):
Iceborn Gauntlet — your defining first item. After casting an ability, your next basic attack deals 150% base AD bonus physical damage and drops a stationary 300-radius frost field for 2 seconds that slows melee enemies by 25%. Land the empowered attack next to your Q pillar so the field covers the spot your E has to hit, then charge. Also gives you ability haste (cooldown reduction) to throw more pillars per fight.
Plated Steelcaps — default boots when the enemy main damage is basic attacks. Cuts incoming auto-attack damage during extended fights.
Thornmail — armor plus a Grievous Wounds debuff (a debuff that cuts the target's healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds) on the auto-carries (Attack Damage carries that deal damage with basic attacks, like Caitlyn or Jinx) who attack you. The single best item against AD-heavy teams (squads where most damage comes from Attack Damage rather than Ability Power).
Spirit Visage — magic resist, HP, ability haste, and a healing-amp passive that boosts every regen tick on you (Grasp HP, Doran's Shield healing, Soraka or Yuumi support heals).
Force of Nature — late-game MR plus a movement speed passive that compensates for Ornn's slow base speed, helping you close R-recast distance from longer engage range.
Situational items:
Heartsteel — first-item alternative to Iceborn into safe lanes (Nasus, Vladimir) where you can stack HP under tower undisturbed. Permanent stacking HP compounds with Living Forge's resist scaling.
Mercury's Treads — boots swap vs heavy AP teams or 3+ hard CC chains (multiple stuns or roots in a row). Tenacity (a stat that shortens stuns and slows on you) keeps you mobile through engage.
Randuin's Omen — vs crit-stacking AD compositions (champions whose basic attacks have a chance to deal massive bonus damage — a "critical strike" — like Yasuo, Caitlyn, Tryndamere). Passive: you take 30% less damage from critical strikes. Active: Humility slows nearby enemies by 70% movement speed for 2 seconds, which is how you peel a Tryndamere off your carry.
Hollow Radiance — vs grouped AP (Ability Power) waveclear comps that clear minion waves with abilities, like Karthus + Brand. The burn aura ticks magic damage on enemies fighting near you and gives MR.
Frozen Heart — vs heavy basic-attack DPS teams (Damage Per Second teams whose carries — like Master Yi, Tryndamere, Kog'Maw — kill you with sustained auto-attacks). The attack-speed slow aura cripples auto-carries trying to whittle you down, and the armor + ability haste stack with your existing tank profile.
Boots:
Plated Steelcaps is the default into AD lanes. Swap to
Mercury's Treads when the enemy team has 3+ AP threats or heavy hard CC.
Skill order: Max Q first (the slow, the pillar uptime, and the highest base damage scale per rank). Max W second (ramp Brittle damage and lower the cooldown so you can chain Brittle setups every fight). Max E last; one early point is enough for the dash mobility. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Resolve with Grasp of the Undying keystone (every 4 seconds in lane combat your next basic attack on a champion deals bonus magic damage, heals you, and grants permanent HP). Pair with Demolish, Conditioning, and Overgrowth. Secondary Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free base boots at minute 12, 45 seconds sooner per takedown) and Cosmic Insight (cooldown reduction on summoner spells and item actives).
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Ornn beats
Bleed-stacking grab juggernaut
Darius has no dash — Volcanic Rupture pillar plus Searing Charge knock-up locks him into Brittle, and the Brittle knock-back from Bellows Breath (W) shuts down Apprehend pull retaliation.
DariusStack-scaling Q juggernaut top laner
Nasus has no dash and Wither slow does not interrupt Searing Charge into a Brittle knock-up. Ornn shoves him off the wave with Volcanic Rupture, denying Siphoning Strike stack farming, and Living Forge passive bonus resists shrug off Spirit Fire armor shred.
NasusSpinning silence juggernaut top laner
Garen has no dash, and cleansing the Decisive Strike slow does not save him from Searing Charge into a Brittle knock-up, twice per Volcanic Rupture rotation. Living Forge's bonus resistances let Ornn shrug off the Judgment spin while he waits for the next pillar.
GarenPool-immune AP scaling mage top
Pre-level 6 Vladimir cannot duel Doran's Shield Ornn with Grasp proccing every 4 seconds. Volcanic Rupture pillar plus Searing Charge knock-up applies a Brittle knock-up before Sanguine Pool comes online, and Living Forge passive bonus resists shrug off Transfusion poke.
VladimirSpell-combo scaling AP mage top
Pre-level 6 Ryze cannot duel a Doran's Shield Ornn with Grasp proccing every 4 seconds. Volcanic Rupture (Q) outranges his Overload (Q) trade pattern, and Searing Charge (E) into the pillar knocks him up before Rune Prison (W) can root.
Ryze
Champions that beat Ornn
Stealth blind poke kiter top
Teemo sits at auto-attack range and lets Toxic Shot chip Ornn's HP every wave, faster than Doran's Shield can regenerate it. Blinding Dart then blanks his basic attacks, so he cannot farm the wave back or land a Grasp of the Undying hit while the poison keeps ticking.
TeemoMark-stacking ranged shuriken top
Kennen's Thundering Shuriken (Q) pokes from 950 range, outside Volcanic Rupture (Q). Electrical Surge (W) adds a mark, and the third mark from any of his abilities stuns Ornn out of the Searing Charge commit.
KennenParry duelist top laner
Fiora's Riposte parries Searing Charge and stuns Ornn instead, cancelling the whole Brittle combo before it starts. Her Duelist's Dance vitals then deal true damage every few seconds, and Ornn's stacked armor does nothing against it.
FioraCounter-strike dodge duelist top
Jax's Counter Strike (E) dodges Ornn's attacks and stuns at the end, breaking the Brittle sequence. Empower (W) then adds 50-190 magic damage on the next hit, so it is magic resist and not armor that answers him.
JaxRanged on-hit ascending top laner
Kayle's Starfire Spellblade (E) on-hit deals percent-health magic damage that ignores Ornn's armor stacking. From level 6 Divine Ascent (P) makes her ranged with +350 attack range, which puts her outside Volcanic Rupture (Q) entirely.

Key matchups
- Darius: Survivable. Avoid the outer edge of his Q for the first 4 levels and farm with Q poke at max range. Once you have
Iceborn Gauntlet components (around minute 10) you can answer his all-in (full commitment to a kill, no disengage) by dropping pillar behind him, E into the pillar for knock-up, W for Brittle, then Grasp-AA him while his Hemorrhage stacks (Darius's bleed passive that ramps up damage when he stacks 5 hits — let it expire by walking away) fall off. - Fiora: Hard counter. Her W is a parry (a brief shield that blocks and counters the next ability you throw — bait it with an auto-attack before committing E). Her vitals deal true damage (damage that ignores both armor and magic resistance — your tank stats do nothing against it). Take
Doran's Shield, freeze the wave near your tower (let it sit just outside so she has to walk far from her tower to last-hit), and call your jungler at level 4-6. - Teemo: Hardest possible lane. He sits outside Q range, blinds you on a short cooldown so your auto-attacks miss, and his shrooms zone the bushes you need for engage. Take
Doran's Shield, accept losing 20-30 CS, and recall on first
Iceborn Gauntlet components. Group with team after first back — solo splitpush (pushing a side lane alone to force the enemy to respond) into Teemo does not work. - Mordekaiser: Hard pre-6 and worse post-6. His R isolates you in a 1v1 box, and the passive on Death's Grasp (E) gives him 5-15% magic penetration by rank, so a slice of your magic resist simply does not count. He has no percent-health damage of his own unless he buys Liandry's Torment. Pre-6, dodge his Q edges and trade only when Doran's Shield procs are up. Post-6, never fight him 1v1 with R off cooldown — wait for your team or your jungler (the teammate who farms the jungle camps and roams between lanes).
- Renekton: Even, decided by jungle pressure. He bullies you out of CS (creep score, the count of minions you have last-hit) until level 5-6 with Ruthless Predator (W): two hits and a short stun normally, three hits and a much longer stun at full Fury, but only ever one stun per cast. Take Doran's Shield, max Q for safe poke, and look to all-in him at level 6 when R plus E-pillar gives you a knock-up he cannot stun-cancel.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 6: First R unlocks. Up to this point Ornn is a passable laner, but R-recast turns every unwarded (no enemy wards watching the spot) mid-river skirmish into a 2-3 person knock-up. Coordinate with your jungler the moment you hit level 6 — call a fight on Scuttle (the river crab whose buff gives the team that kills it vision plus a shrine of move speed) or Voidgrubs (small early-game monsters spawning in Baron pit; killing them gives bonus damage to towers).
Iceborn Gauntlet completion (~ minute 12-14): First major teamfight power spike. The slow zone after every ability cast keeps enemies stuck in Q pillars and inside W cone radius. Force ganks (a jungler ambushing a lane to score a kill) and side-lane skirmishes here.- 3-item spike with Living Forge upgrades (~ minute 18-22): At level 13 your passive automatically forges your first eligible Legendary item into its Masterwork version, worth 1000 gold of stats, and from level 14 you can walk up to a teammate (the carry — your AD or AP main damage dealer, usually) and forge the same 1000-gold upgrade onto their first eligible Legendary item. This is the breakpoint where Ornn's tank-engager identity becomes a team gold lead, not just a personal stat lead. Force every Drake fight (Drake is the dragon objective in the bottom side river that gives team-wide buffs) from here.
Spirit Visage online (~ minute 26-30): Peak teamfight window. Healing-amp boosts every regen source on you, including support heals and Grasp HP. Walk in first on every Baron call (Baron Nashor is the top-river late-game objective whose buff empowers minions and pushes towers); your job is to soak the opening engage so the squishy backline (the carries who deal damage from behind their team's tanks) can position freely.
Common mistakes
- Walking E into the enemy without setup. Naked E is a damage dash — no knock-up, no setup. The whole point of the spell is the terrain collision. Drop Q first and wait the full 1.125 seconds it takes the magma pillar to erupt, then E into it. The pillar lasts 4 seconds, so you have time: what you do not have is the half second the combo feels like it should take.
- Forgetting to recast R for the redirect. A non-redirected R is just a slow + Brittle line. The recast (charge into the elemental and slap it sideways) is what gives you the AOE knock-up across the team. If you ult and your team starts the fight without your recast, you wasted half the spell.
- Reading Living Forge as a resistance-only passive. It amplifies your bonus armor, your bonus magic resist and your bonus health by 10%, rising to 30% after all five Masterwork upgrades. Health items are amplified just as much as resistance items. The reason to buy Spirit Visage before Warmog's Armor is the healing amplification and the magic resist against a specific enemy team, not a discount on effective health.
- Roaming away from your own wave at level 4-5. Ornn moves slowly. By the time you finish a roam (leaving your lane to help another lane) to mid, your tower has eaten 2 plates (the gold-rewarding armor segments on early-game towers) and your top wave has crashed under enemy tower. Stay top, push the wave, and look for R roams only after level 6 when the cross-map ult justifies leaving lane.
- Sitting on your ally upgrades. Your own upgrade is automatic at level 13 and costs you nothing, so it is never a choice. The four ally upgrades at levels 14 to 17 are the choice, and they expire with the game: walk to your AD carry within 600 units and forge, then the mid laner, then the rest. An unspent upgrade is 1000 gold left on the floor.
Advanced tip
Learn the R into fog from terrain angle. The elemental travels along the line you ulted, so casting R from a wall or unwarded jungle camp means the enemy team sees the cast indicator but cannot see your body for the recast. Walk along the elemental's travel line through fog of war, recast E to charge into it from an unexpected angle, and the redirected knock-up lands on a backline that thought they had time to flash. This converts R from "engage" to "pickoff" (a kill on a single isolated enemy) and is the single move that separates a competent Ornn from a teamfight-winning one.
