Precision (long-fight runes): every Olaf trade is a 4-6 second melee scrap. Conqueror stacks each auto and Q, peaking when Berserker Rage's missing-HP bonus kicks in. Triumph heals on kill, Bloodline stacks lifesteal, Last Stand adds damage below 60% HP.
Resolve secondary: Bone Plating reduces damage on the next 3 hits after you take damage, perfect for surviving the opener of an all-in. Overgrowth scales bonus HP for every nearby minion that dies — a top laner farming 8+ minions per wave gets max stacks on its own.
Vs heavy poke or ranged tops (Quinn, Teemo, Gnar), swap Resolve to Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free boots minute 12) and Biscuit Delivery (3 free biscuits restoring HP and mana). You trade brawl tools for sustain and tempo, since you cannot trade in melee anyway.
Win Condition
Win extended trades at low HP in Berserker Rage: Q to slow, walk into E range for the true-damage chunk, auto with W's bonus AS. Snowball Stridebreaker into mid-game R-cleanse engages.
Weakness
Almost no escape — once Q is on cooldown and the target is out of axe range, Olaf walks at base Move Speed with no dash. Pokers, kiters, and ranged tops chip his HP from outside E range.
Overview
Olaf is a juggernaut / bruiser (a slow melee fighter that mixes damage with survivability and wins extended scraps) built around his passive Berserker Rage: the lower his HP, the more Attack Speed and Life Steal he gets. He wants to fight at low HP — that is the core mental shift. His kit gives him exactly one piece of mobility (Q, an axe throw he can pick back up to reset the cooldown), one single-target true-damage strike (E, that costs him HP), and one of the strongest ultimates in the game — R Ragnarok cleanses every active CC (crowd control: stuns, roots, knockups — anything that locks your character down) on Olaf and makes him immune to new CC for as long as he keeps swinging.
The game plan is simple to describe and easy to mess up. In lane, Q-poke the enemy at distance, walk to the axe to reset Q, and only E them when they are in burn range or when you need the kill — every E costs a chunk of your own HP, so spamming it for fun puts you in execute range. Once you hit Berserker Rage's sweet spot at ~30-40% HP, W for bonus Attack Speed and the shield, and trade in melee. From mid-game on, R is a teamfight win button: hold it for the moment the enemy frontline lands their hard engage, cleanse the chain, and walk to the back line (the squishy carries who stand behind their tanks) for E + autos.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Doran's Shield +
Health Potion. The HP-regen passive softens poke (low-cost ranged damage that chips your HP without committing to a fight) until your level 2 power spike. Take
Doran's Blade only into a melee lane where you fully expect to all-in level 1-2 (Sett, Mordekaiser, mirror Olaf).
Core items (in order):
Stridebreaker — first-item spike (the moment your damage and stickiness — your ability to stay glued on a target that tries to run away — jump the most). The active Breaking Shockwaveis not a dash: it deals damage and slows everyone around you by 35%, then hands you 35% decaying move speed for 3 seconds per champion hit — that move speed, not a gap-closer, is what lets Olaf stay in Reckless Swing range. AD, HP, and ability haste (a stat that lowers ability cooldowns) all line up with the kit.
Plated Steelcaps — default boots when the enemy hurts you mostly with basic attacks. They reduce that damage in extended trades (back-and-forth exchanges of damage in lane).
Sterak's Gage — bonus AD scaled on base AD plus a Lifeline shield (an HP-threshold passive: a shield that pops automatically when your HP drops below ~30%). The shield activates exactly when Berserker Rage's missing-HP bonuses peak — perfect chemistry.
Death's Dance — gives 60 attack damage, 50 armor and 15 ability haste. Ignore Pain spreads a share of all damage you take over 3 seconds instead of landing it at once, and Defy cleanses the leftover bleed and heals you when a champion you damaged dies. Combined with R's CC immunity it lets Olaf walk through entire engages.
Black Cleaver — the fifth slot, and a better fit than Sundered Sky, the healing item it replaces. 3000 gold buys 45 attack damage, 400 HP and 20 ability haste; Carve strips 6% armor per hit up to five stacks; Fervor gives Move Speed on every hit, and melee champions get the larger share of it. Note where the shred lands: E is true damage and ignores armor anyway, so Carve is what makes your Q axes and your basic attacks hurt a top laner who bought plate. The Move Speed is the closest Olaf gets to a second dash.
Situational items:
Mercury's Treads — swap from
Plated Steelcaps when the enemy team has heavy magic damage or three or more sources of CC. The tenacity stat (which shortens the duration of CC effects on you) keeps your R from being kited around the fight after the first cleanse runs out.
Sundered Sky — 3100 gold for 40 attack damage and a heal that was trimmed once, in 26.16; 26.17 took 5 attack damage off and left the healing alone. Reach for it only in a melee lane you have to out-sustain (Darius, Sett, Mordekaiser), where the crit-heal on the first auto of each trade covers the HP that E charges you.
Spirit Visage — vs heavy AP (Ability Power, the stat behind magic damage). Adds Magic Resist plus a healing-amp passive that boosts your passive life steal, Death's Dance bleed-clean, and any Sundered Sky heal.
Serylda's Grudge — vs tank squads stacking armor and tenacity. Armor penetration plus a slow proc (a passive that triggers automatically on each ability hit) on every damaging ability — Q, E, and Stridebreaker active.
Dead Man's Plate — when you need the Move Speed stack passive to walk down kiters (Quinn, Vayne top, Gnar) and reach E range without burning Q on cooldown.
Boots:
Plated Steelcaps is the default. Switch to
Mercury's Treads when the enemy team has three or more CC sources or heavy magic damage.
Skill order: Max E first — the true-damage scaling per rank is huge and one full E rotation deletes squishy tops. Every basic attack shaves 1 second off Reckless Swing (2 against monsters), so the way to get more E is to keep attacking between casts, not to wait out the cooldown. Max Q second (bigger slow + better damage on the axe-pickup loop). Max W last, not because it scales badly (the flat shield goes from 10 to 130 and the attack speed from 40% to 80%) but because Reckless Swing's true damage grows faster and is what actually kills top laners. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Bloodline, Last Stand. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating + Overgrowth, or swap to Inspiration with Magical Footwear + Biscuit Delivery if the enemy is a ranged top (Quinn, Teemo, Gnar) and you need lane sustain instead of brawl tools.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Olaf beats
Unstoppable engage rock tank
Ragnarok cleanses Malphite's Unstoppable Force knock-up the moment he lands, removing the only engage tool his team's win condition depends on. Olaf walks through Ground Slam slow and Seismic Shard slow with R immunity.
MalphiteSelf-stasis AP control mage
Ragnarok cleanses Lissandra's Frozen Tomb stun the second she casts it on Olaf, removing the lockdown her teamfight ult depends on. Ring of Frost root and Ice Shard slow are both cleansed and ignored for the swing duration.
LissandraKnock-up channel engage tank
Ragnarok cleanses Sion's Decimating Smash knock-up at the moment of impact, denying him the lock his engage needs. The Roar of the Slayer slow is ignored under the same immunity, so Sion cannot peel Olaf off the target he chose.
SionStack-scaling Q juggernaut top laner
Nasus's first 6 levels are passive farming — Olaf Q-pokes him off the wave with Undertow slow chip, E-bursts him at sub-40% HP under Berserker Rage, and snowballs Stridebreaker before Siphoning Strike stacks reach the kill threshold.
NasusLate-scaling ranged carry top laner
Kayle is one of the weakest champions at level 6, and Celestial Blessing does not cover the burst Berserker Rage puts out at low HP. Olaf kills her with Reckless Swing early, before Divine Ascent turns her basic attacks ranged and the lane stops being reachable.
Kayle
Champions that beat Olaf
Ranged Demacian Eye kiter top
Quinn sits outside Reckless Swing range and chips Olaf with Harrier auto procs every few seconds. Vault dash repositions her out of Undertow pickup range mid-trade, and Blinding Assault blinds Olaf's auto chain under Berserker Rage.
QuinnTrue-damage tumble ADC top
Vayne's Tumble takes her out of Reckless Swing range every few seconds, and Silver Bolts deal true damage no armor reduces. Condemn pins Olaf against a wall for a stun Ragnarok can cleanse but not prevent, and every second stunned is free damage for her.
VayneParry duelist top laner
Fiora's Riposte parries Reckless Swing and turns Olaf's own commit into a stun on himself, cancelling the all-in. Her Duelist's Dance vitals then chip him with true damage every few seconds, and stacking HP does nothing against it.
FioraCounter-strike dodge duelist top
Jax's Counter Strike (E) dodges every Berserker Rage auto-attack for the length of the channel, denying Olaf his entire damage rotation and stunning him at the end of it. Empower (W) then adds 50-190 magic damage on the next hit, so magic resist and not armor is what blunts him.

Key matchups
- Garen: Skill matchup (the better player wins, regardless of pick). His W (Courage) cuts incoming damage for 4 seconds, but the shield and the 60% tenacity only cover the first 0.75 seconds — it eats one E hit, but his Q silence is dodgeable by walking sideways. Q-poke from range when his W is down; under R, you out-trade him at low HP if you have at least one item lead.
- Sett: Favorable lane. His Q-W combo is telegraphed (the wind-up is visible enough to react). Q at distance to slow, walk in, E at low HP after he commits W. Don't trade if his Grit (his shield bar) is full — wait for him to spend it on minions.
- Fiora: Hardest melee matchup. Her W is a parry (a brief shield that blocks and counters the next ability) — bait it with a Q before committing E. Her Vitals do true damage, so Death's Dance is mandatory; rush
Spirit Visage only if she gets early kills. - Quinn / Teemo: Very rough ranged matchup. They blind you (cancels your auto-attacks for a short time) or kite you out of E range. Freeze the wave near your tower (stop pushing and keep the wave on your side of the lane) to deny them farm (the gold and XP from killing minions), and call your jungler — Olaf cannot win this 1v1 without help.
- Mordekaiser: Even matchup decided by R timing. His R isolates you in a 1v1 realm, but Olaf's R cleanses his E pull and grounds him during the swing — pop R the moment his E lands and he loses the fight. Buy
Spirit Visage early if his R is killing you.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2: With Q + E unlocked, you have a real all-in window (a window where you can fully commit to a kill, with no fallback). Q at distance to slow, walk into E range, E for the true-damage chunk — most level-2 melees are at 40% HP after one rotation.
- Level 6: First R unlocks. Even at 0 items, R cleanses any single CC the opponent has and lets you free-walk into E range. Look for a level-6 all-in the moment the enemy uses their main CC ability for waveclear.
Stridebreaker completion (~ minute 11-13): The active move speed from Breaking Shockwave, not a dash, gives Olaf a real second way to stay on target. Force side-lane 1v1s and roam (leave your lane to help mid or bot) for picks (isolated kills on out-of-position enemies).- Two items + R online (~ minute 18-22): Peak teamfight window. Hold R for the enemy hard-engage, cleanse the chain, walk into the back line (the squishy carries who stand behind the tanks), and E + auto until the carry dies. Ragnarok starts at 3 seconds and each basic attack or Reckless Swing that lands on an enemy champion extends it by up to 2.5 seconds. Attacking minions does nothing for the duration, so never break off the carry to farm inside your own ultimate.
Common mistakes
- E-spamming for damage in lane. Every E costs you HP. Spam it on minions and you walk yourself into Q-poke execute range for the enemy. Use E only when the target is in burn range or when the killing-blow refund will recover the cost.
- Pressing R defensively at low HP. R does not heal. If you pop it just to survive a stun, you waste the cleanse on a single CC and have no R left for the actual fight 2 minutes later. R is a commit tool — press it to keep attacking, not to escape.
- Forgetting to walk to the axe. Walking over the axe cuts Q's remaining cooldown, down to as little as 2.5 seconds if you grab it immediately. Without the pickup, Q is a flat 9-second ability at every rank; with the pickup it comes back in 2.5 seconds or less. Ranking Q buys damage and a stronger slow, never a shorter cooldown. In every lane interaction, your feet should be walking toward the axe by default.
- Building pure tank. Olaf scales with AD, not HP-only. Stacking Sunfire + Warmog's flat out kills your damage; you stop killing squishies and become a slow walking minion. Stick to the AD-bruiser core (Stridebreaker → Sterak's → Death's Dance).
- Chasing kiters past Tier 2 turret. Olaf has no escape outside Q. Without R or the Stridebreaker move speed active, every step past turret is a free gank (a surprise attack from the enemy jungler) — and his slow base Move Speed means he cannot disengage clean.
Advanced tip
Practice the axe loop, but time it honestly: picking the axe up the instant it lands leaves about 2.5 seconds of cooldown, and only an axe that has been on the ground for 2.5 seconds refunds Q in full. The play is therefore to throw Q through your target, keep walking, and pick the axe up on the far side while the slow is still running, so the refund and the second throw arrive together instead of you standing still waiting for them. In a real lane, the highest-impact use is during a level-2 all-in: open with Q to slow, walk to pick it up while the enemy commits an ability, re-throw Q to lock them in melee, then E for the true-damage chunk. The same trick works in teamfights to chain-slow a back-line carry that tries to walk away from your R commit. Test it in a custom game on a target dummy until the rhythm is automatic — the difference between "Olaf misses the kill" and "Olaf solo-kills the squishy" is one extra Q in the chain.
