Core Abilities

Garden of Thorns
Seeds spawn around Zyra every ~13 seconds (faster at higher levels). Casting Q or E near a seed turns it into a plant that attacks the nearest enemy for several seconds.
Deadly Spines
Deadly Spines
Rectangular area-of-effect zone in front of Zyra. Casting near a seed grows a Thorn Spitter (ranged plant) that pokes from afar.
Rampant Growth
Rampant Growth
Place a seed on the ground (lasts 60s). Holds up to 2 charges. Killing enemies reduces the seed cooldown — every kill near Zyra is a free plant.
Grasping Roots
Grasping Roots
Linear skillshot that roots all enemies on its path. Casting near a seed grows a Vine Lasher (melee plant) whose basic attacks slow enemies. Your kill setup with the AD carry.
Stranglethorns
Stranglethorns
Large area-of-effect thicket at a target location. Enemies inside take damage and are knocked airborne when it contracts after ~2 seconds. Enrages all plants inside the zone for massive bonus damage.

Why these runes

Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet procs off E roots and Q hits, on its own cooldown, adding burst on top of plant damage. Manaflow Band fuels W seed spam, Transcendence adds 10 ability haste by level 8 so seeds and R come back faster, Scorch closes poke at low HP under tower.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery solves Zyra's mana hunger in the first 6 levels (the W charge cost adds up), and Cosmic Insight gives extra Flash uptime — Flash is your only escape, the kit has no dash.

When to switch secondary

Vs hard-engage tank supports (Leona, Nautilus, Rell) where surviving the first stun chain wins the lane, swap Inspiration to Resolve with Bone Plating (reduces back-to-back engage damage) and Revitalize (boosts Mikael's Blessing heal).

Win Condition

Pre-seed both W charges before each trade, then E + Q on the rooted target lights up two plants at once for free poke. Post-6, Stranglethorns enrages every plant inside the zone for a teamfight-winning ultimate.

Weakness

No mobility, no shield, no self-peel. Hard countered by dive supports who jump past the linear E root, and by area-of-effect cleanse/displace tools that wipe the plant field before R lands.

Overview

Zyra support is a plant-summoning area-of-effect mage who turns the lane into a minefield. Her passive Garden of Thorns drops seeds every ~13 seconds; casting Deadly Spines (Q) or Grasping Roots (E) near a seed grows a plant — a ranged Thorn Spitter or a slowing Vine Lasher — that fights for her. The lane plan is: pre-place both W (Rampant Growth) seeds in the brushes, walk up only when seeds are ready, E to root, Q on the rooted target to detonate two plants at once. The plants do the auto-attack damage Zyra cannot — even a Zyra who never lands an auto out-pokes most lanes.

The cost is fragility. Zyra has no dash, no shield, no peel for the carry, no built-in sustain. Her E is a linear skillshot that mobile engage supports skip over, and her ultimate Stranglethorns (R) has a ~2 second wind-up before the knockup — long enough for any decent Alistar or Rakan to displace her out of her own zone before it triggers. The pick is binary: pre-seed and out-poke until your AD carry can all-in (an "all-in" is total commitment to the kill — no exit, you go until someone dies), or eat one engage, die, and feed bot lane. The level-3 spike with all three abilities online is where Zyra's edge appears; from there the snowball (a "snowball" is an early lead that grows: kill → gold → item → more kills) is plants → plates → tower.

Recommended Build

Starting items: World Atlas World Atlas (there is one support starter and every support buys it) + 2 Health Potion Health Potions.

Core items (in order):

  1. Bloodsong Bloodsong — the finisher you choose, free, when Bounty of Worlds upgrades: one of five. Mandatory: gives the gold income that funds real items, plus a Spellblade proc that adds bonus on-hit damage after every ability.
  2. Liandry's Torment Liandry's Torment — Zyra's defining damage item. Percent-HP burn (damage spread in the seconds after the hit, not instant) is reapplied by every plant attack and every Q, punishing tanks and stacked-HP teams.
  3. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity — ability haste boots, prioritised over Sorcerer's Shoes because as support you cast more abilities and farm fewer minions. Faster W recharge means more plants per fight.
  4. Shadowflame Shadowflame — 110 ability power and a flat 15 magic penetration that never changes with the target's health. Its Cinderbloom passive makes your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% health, for 20% extra damage. Lines up with R + plant enrage on the low-HP target.
  5. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game scaling multiplier. 130 ability power on top of a passive that raises your total ability power by 30%, and plants scale with AP.

Situational items:

  • Mikael's Blessing Mikael's Blessing — into hard crowd control threats on your ADC (Leona stun chain, Morgana Q, Pyke hook). Cleansing the lock-down on your carry is the closest thing Zyra has to peel (peel = abilities that protect an ally by pushing or stunning attackers off them).
  • Locket of the Iron Solari Locket of the Iron Solari — into heavy area-of-effect engage compositions (Malphite R, Kennen R, Wukong R). The active shield is a teamfight save button when your team is grouped on objective.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — into heal-stacking compositions (Soraka, Yuumi peel, enemy team with Aatrox or Vladimir). Grievous Wounds passive cuts their healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds.
  • Void Staff Void Staff — the moment any priority target finishes their first magic resist item. Stops a single 850-gold Negatron Cloak from soft-countering your entire build.

Boots: Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity is default. Swap to Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads if the enemy team has 3+ hard CC threats with magic damage.

Skill order: Max Q first (highest base damage and the main poke tool when paired with a seed for a Thorn Spitter plant), E second (more root duration and damage), W last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, and 16.

Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Zyra beats

  • Immobile mage without dash

Zyra's Grasping Roots E is a long linear root that lands clean on Karthus — no dash to dodge. The root chains into Deadly Spines Q plus a Stranglethorns R knockup. Karthus's only escape is Wall of Pain W slow which does not break the root or the plant burst.

    Karthus
  • Immobile mage without dash

Zyra's Grasping Roots E is a long linear root that lands clean on Veigar — no dash to dodge. The root chains into Deadly Spines Q plus a Stranglethorns R knockup. Veigar's Event Horizon E cage cannot peel a Zyra at range while her plants attack from behind.

    Veigar
  • Immobile mage without dash

Zyra's Grasping Roots E is a long linear root that lands clean on Anivia — no dash to dodge. The root chains into Deadly Spines Q plus a Stranglethorns R knockup. Crystallize W wall offers no displacement to escape, and Anivia's slow Flash Frost Q is sidestepped.

    Anivia
  • Squishy enchanter with low HP

Zyra's Deadly Spines Q plus Garden of Thorns plants out-damage Yuumi's healing throughput. Yuumi has no body while detached from her ADC, and You and Me! W cannot save her ADC from a Stranglethorns R knockup zone covering the entire bot lane.

    Yuumi
  • Squishy enchanter with low HP

Zyra's Deadly Spines Q plus Garden of Thorns plants out-damage Soraka's Astral Infusion W healing throughput, since she pays her own Health to heal. Equinox E silence is short-range and cannot prevent Zyra's pre-placed Rampant Growth W seed setup at range.

    Soraka

Champions that beat Zyra

  • Hard-engage tank support

Leona's Zenith Blade E dash plus Solar Flare R chain CC bypass Zyra's plant zoning, dashing through the field onto her without slowing. Shield of Daybreak Q stun chains the lock, and Sunlight passive marks Zyra for bonus team damage during the no-peel commit window.

    Leona
  • Hard-engage tank support

Nautilus's Dredge Line Q hooks Zyra through minions, pulling her out of her pre-placed plant field. Staggering Blow passive triggers root on the first auto, Riptide E AOE slow stacks the CC chain, and Depth Charge R chain knock-up finishes her before R triggers.

    Nautilus
  • Hard-engage tank support

Rell's Ferromancy Crash Down W knocks Zyra up from range with AOE landing, bypassing her plant zoning. Shattering Strike Q stuns and wipes shields as the all-in lands, and Magnet Storm R pulls Zyra into the kill setup denying her R cast.

    Rell
  • All-in burst support with built-in survival

Pyke's Phantom Undertow E dashes him out of a failed engage and leaves a phantom that stuns on the way back, and Death From Below R executes Zyra below the HP threshold before her plant field ramps. Bone Skewer Q hook pulls Zyra out of pre-placed seeds.

    Pyke
  • All-in burst support with built-in survival

Pantheon's Shield Vault W stuns through plant attacks and his Comet Spear Q poke shreds Zyra's HP bar from outside Grasping Roots E range. Aegis Assault E blocks plant auto-attack damage from one direction, and Grand Starfall R hard-engages over walls.

    Pantheon

Key matchups

  • Leona / Nautilus / Rell: Hard-engage tank supports. Stand outside their flash-engage range until you have Mikael's Blessing Mikael's Blessing. Pre-place both W seeds in your bot brush so any engage walks into a wall of plants the moment you E root the engager.
  • Blitzcrank / Thresh / Pyke: Hookers. Stand behind a minion at all times — their hook is a single-target skillshot that the wave breaks. Punish missed hooks with E → Q for free poke (poke = ranged damage to wear the enemy's HP down without committing to a fight); never auto-attack out of cover when their hook is up.
  • Yuumi: Free lane. Yuumi has no body when she is not attached to her ADC. Pre-seed brushes and time E to land the moment she detaches to last-hit or proc her empowered auto. One detached Yuumi caught by E → Q is a kill before her carry can shield her.
  • Soraka: Out-pressure her by stacking poke until her mana runs dry. Soraka heals her ADC at a percentage of her own HP — every plant tick on the ADC undoes 30 seconds of her healing. Drop Morellonomicon Morellonomicon after Liandry's if she is fed.
  • Rakan: The hardest mobile engage in the kit. Rakan's Grand Entrance (W) leaps over your E root and chains into a charm via The Quickness (R). Never stand at max range of his Grand Entrance without a Vine Lasher between you and him; the slow on the plant attacks is your only chance to Flash out before he lands the charm.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3 (all abilities online): First spike. With Q + W + E unlocked, the full rotation works: pre-place a W seed, E root, Q the rooted target while standing on a second seed — two plants spawn at once and the enemy support loses 30% HP from one combo.
  • Level 6 (R unlocked): First Stranglethorns. If the enemy bot lane stands in the same brush (almost always — supports stack behind their ADC), pre-seed it with both W charges, drop R on top — the vines snap after 2 seconds and knock up for 1 second, and every plant in the zone is enraged for 150% bonus damage.
  • Bloodsong + Liandry's Torment online (~ minute 14-16): Damage flips. From here you out-damage every enchanter support and threaten the kill on a fed ADC. Force grouped fights at drake.
  • R + Shadowflame online (~ minute 22-26): Two grouped enemies eat a full enraged plant field and die. Pick angles where the enemy carry and support are within R radius of each other, ideally near a chokepoint.

Common mistakes

  • Casting W in the middle of a fight. Rampant Growth has a delay before the seed is usable. By the time it lands, the fight is over. Pre-seed before the fight starts — drop 2-3 seeds in the brush or behind your minion line during the downtime between waves.
  • Throwing E for naked poke. Grasping Roots without a seed nearby is a slow linear skillshot that hits one enemy for small damage. Always check the ground first: if there is no seed in range, W one down or wait for the passive. The same E is worth far more when it grows a Vine Lasher next to it.
  • Standing in front of your ADC. Zyra has no peel. If you stand in front, the engage hits you, you die, your ADC has no support. Stand at the same depth or one step behind the carry, with a minion between you and any hook.
  • Ulting on a single target. R has a 2 second wind-up. On a single fleeing target the knockup lands after they have already dashed or flashed away. Save R for fights where two or three enemies are inside the zone and crowd-controlled (your ADC's stun, your own E root, or a wall like Anivia or Trundle).
  • Auto-attacking the wave for last-hits. As support, you do not take last-hits — the gold from your AD carry's farm funds the lane. Stand back, poke with plants, auto-attack a minion only if your carry is dead or recalling.

Advanced tip

Practice the R + Flash combo. Stranglethorns has a target-location cast: cast R on the ground, then immediately Flash into the middle of the enemy team — the zone repositions with you. This turns a flank into a wombo-combo engage (a "wombo" is when multiple ultimates chain together to catch the whole team at once): you appear inside their back line with the knockup two seconds out, every plant in the zone enraged, and your team's follow-up arriving as the knockup lands. The window is tight (~0.25s between the R cast and the Flash), but a single connected R + Flash on a stacked enemy team is a guaranteed teamfight win.
