Pick up leftover enemy summoner spell drops and item actives, then cast them once yourself. Casting a summoner spell also fires 3 homing missiles.
Sleepy Trouble Bubble
Sleepy Trouble Bubble
Long bubble that makes the target drowsy then asleep. The next damage source that wakes them is doubled (up to a cap). Main setup tool.
Portal Jump
Portal Jump
Short blink to a nearby spot for 1 second, then snap back. Used to dodge a skillshot, extend Q range, or set up an unexpected E angle.

Why these runes

Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet is guaranteed by E (sleep slow locks the target onto the Q line). Manaflow Band feeds her thirsty mana pool, Transcendence adds 10 ability haste across levels 5 and 8 for faster Q windups, Scorch chips low-HP targets that survive the burst.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery covers her weak early sustain (there is no healing anywhere in her kit), Cosmic Insight reduces summoner spell cooldowns so Spell Thief (W) has more flips to pick up across a game.

When to switch secondary

If the enemy team is double-mage (2+ AP threats with no Magic Resist), swap Inspiration to Domination with Cheap Shot (bonus damage against slowed targets — your E does this for free) and Ultimate Hunter (more Portal Jump (R) windows mid-fight).

Win Condition

Land Sleepy Trouble Bubble (E) on an isolated target, then chain a max-distance Paddle Star! (Q) for doubled wake-up damage. Once Luden's Echo and Shadowflame are online one E equals one deleted squishy.

Weakness

Very low mobility (Portal Jump (R) is a tiny blink, not a real escape) and no defensive ability in the kit. If E misses, the combo dies and you are kiteable. Hard countered by gap-close assassins and Wind Wall.

Overview

Zoe is a long-range artillery mage built around one combo: bubble first, missile second. Sleepy Trouble Bubble (E) is a long-range bubble that drowses the target then puts them to sleep; the first source of damage that wakes them is doubled. Her Paddle Star! (Q) is a missile she can redirect mid-flight and that scales damage with travel distance, so a clean E → max-range Q deletes squishy targets even before her first item. Spell Thief (W) lets her pick up leftover enemy summoner spells and item actives and cast them once, which is both her macro identity and her weirdest learning curve. She is one of the highest-skill-ceiling mid laners in the pool.

Her game plan is patient: poke with Paddle Star! redirects from fog of war, look for a single clean E on a target that has no dash, and finish them with the doubled wake-up. She is paper-thin in defenses and has no real escape, so positioning behind minions and behind your front line is the price of every game. Skill expression sits in two places — Q redirect timing (the missile is fastest in a straight line, slowest after a redirect) and W spell shopping (you should constantly scan the floor for Flash, Ignite, or Smite drops on kills).

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potions. Doran's gives the mana sustain Zoe desperately needs before Manaflow Band stacks.

Core items (in order):

  1. Luden's Echo Luden's Echo — primary burst spike and the mana pool that lets you actually use Paddle Star! (Q) on cooldown. The bouncing missiles also shove waves for free.
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration is exactly what your burst combo wants: it lifts more squishy targets into one-shot range.
  3. Shadowflame Shadowflame — extra burst, and its passive that activates against low-HP targets ("low-HP threshold passive" — extra damage when the enemy is under a certain HP %) lines up perfectly with Sleepy Trouble Bubble (E) wake-up damage.
  4. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game multiplier. Your fourth item if the game is going long.

Situational items:

  • Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass — into divers and assassins (Zed, Talon, Diana, Akali). The stasis covers the recovery frame after your Q + E combo when they jump on you.
  • Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil — into heavy single-target magic CC (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun). One spell shield can save the whole skirmish.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — into healing-stacking compositions (Soraka mid, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo top).
  • Void Staff Void Staff — the moment any priority target buys a Magic Resist item.

Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes is the default. Ionian Boots of Lucidity is acceptable only if you are going hard on Spell Thief (W) flips and need the summoner cooldown reduction.

Skill order: Max Q first (your main damage and waveclear, scaling is much stronger than the other slots), E second (utility setup), W last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight. Swap to Domination (Cheap Shot + Ultimate Hunter) if the enemy team has 2+ low-resistance squishies and you expect to chain ults across a teamfight.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Zoe beats

  • Immobile mage without dash

Zoe's Sleepy Trouble Bubble E is a long bubble with delayed sleep — Karthus has no dash or stealth and eats the doubled-damage Paddle Star! Q wake-up. Lay Waste Q is a delayed ground blast that cannot stop the bubble, and Death Defied only delays his death, not the setup.

    Karthus
  • Immobile mage without dash

Zoe's Sleepy Trouble Bubble E is a long bubble with delayed sleep — Veigar has no dash and eats the doubled-damage Paddle Star! Q wake-up. Event Horizon E cage requires Zoe to step inside, but her Portal Jump R blink and Q redirect angle make the cage trivial to avoid.

    Veigar
  • Immobile mage without dash

Zoe's Sleepy Trouble Bubble E is a long bubble with delayed sleep — Anivia has no dash and eats the doubled-damage Paddle Star! Q wake-up. Flash Frost Q is a slow projectile dodged by Portal Jump R blink, and Glacial Storm R zone is sidestepped by Spell Thief W speed picks.

    Anivia
  • Artillery mage with weak escape

Zoe's Paddle Star! Q redirects mid-flight from fog of war, poking past Arcanopulse Q without showing on minimap. Xerath's slow-cast Q charge lets Zoe sidestep with Portal Jump R, and Shocking Orb E stun is dodged by the same blink during commit windows.

    Xerath
  • Artillery mage with weak escape

Zoe's Paddle Star! Q redirects mid-flight from fog of war, poking past Bouncing Bomb Q without showing on minimap. Ziggs's slow-arc Q lets Zoe sidestep with Portal Jump R, and Satchel Charge W self-knockback is dodged by the same blink during the trade.

    Ziggs

Champions that beat Zoe

  • Mobile assassin with multiple gap-closers

Zed's Living Shadow W swap plus Death Mark R untargetable dash close the gap before Zoe can land Sleepy Trouble Bubble E. Razor Shuriken Q pokes Zoe through minions, and Portal Jump R is a 1-second blink not a real escape, so once Zed engages she has no answer.

    Zed
  • Mobile assassin with multiple gap-closers

Talon's Assassin's Path E wall-hop closes the gap from terrain angles Zoe cannot predict. Noxian Diplomacy Q empowered crit plus Rake W slow stack Blade's End bleed bursting Zoe before her bubble setup completes, and Shadow Assault R adds invisibility for repositioning.

    Talon
  • Mobile assassin with multiple gap-closers

Qiyana's Audacity E dash plus Elemental Wrath Q elemental empowered burst close the gap before Sleepy Trouble Bubble E lands. Supreme Display of Talent R stuns Zoe against terrain, and Terrashape W movement speed near elements keeps Qiyana sticking through Portal Jump R.

    Qiyana
  • Wind Wall user

Yasuo's Wind Wall W blocks both Paddle Star! Q and Sleepy Trouble Bubble E projectiles for 4 seconds — Zoe's entire kit is single-cast projectiles, so the wall deletes her trade window outright. Sweeping Blade E dashes through minions onto her after the wall expires.

    Yasuo
  • Mobile skirmisher with a spirit dash

Yone has no Wind Wall, but Mortal Steel Q at 2 stacks knocks up and dashes onto Zoe before her bubble setup completes. Soul Unbound E approaches while his body stays untargetable, and Fate Sealed R pulls Zoe out of safety into his team.

    Yone

Key matchups

  • Yasuo / Yone: Yasuo's Wind Wall eats your Paddle Star! (Q) and Sleepy Trouble Bubble (E) for 4 full seconds, which deletes your only damage windows. Hold your spells until the wall is on cooldown (25s at rank 1, 17s at rank 5). Yone has no wall, but his Mortal Steel (Q) knock-up closes the gap just as fast.
  • Zed / Talon: Diving threats. Buy Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass after Luden's Echo Luden's Echo; in lane, walk forward only when their Living Shadow / Assassin's Path is on visible cooldown. Sleepy Trouble Bubble (E) on the dash recovery frame is your only outplay.
  • Karthus: Pre-6 he actually outranges you (Lay Waste 875 against Paddle Star!'s 800), so poke with the fog redirect instead of a straight-line duel. Post-6 you out-pick him because Sleepy Trouble Bubble (E) interrupts his Requiem channel; if he opens R you have ~3 seconds to land E and break his cast.
  • Twisted Fate: Rotation race. He roams with Destiny (R), you roam with Spell Thief (W) drops. Q him before he Gold Cards you, and stay shoved out so his roams cost him CS while yours don't.
  • Orianna: Skill matchup. Same range, but she scales better with the same items. Trade only when her Command: Ball is on her side of the wave (no return-toggle damage), and look to roam any time she back-paddles to last-hit under tower.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2 (Q + E): With one point in each, you have your full trade. A bubble + max-distance Paddle Star! (Q) deals around 40-50% HP to a squishy target at level 2. Force a trade the moment Sleepy Trouble Bubble (E) is up.
  • Level 6 (Portal Jump (R) unlocked): Your bubble + Q windup gains a new angle — blink forward with R to extend Q range or to dodge their counter-skillshot mid-combo. First-blood pressure rises sharply once R is online.
  • Luden's Echo Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 12-14): Mana stops being a constraint and your waveclear flips. Push the wave, then roam — Spell Thief (W) summoner drops on a side-lane skirmish are free flips.
  • Shadowflame Shadowflame online (~ minute 22-26): The combo deletes anyone who has not built a single Magic Resist item. This is your "force objective fights" window.

Common mistakes

  • Throwing Q first, E second. Sleepy Trouble Bubble (E) is a setup spell — it travels slowly and is easy to sidestep on its own. Always bubble first, then send Paddle Star! (Q) at max distance into the now-asleep target. The wake-up damage is your kill condition; without it, Q is just chip damage.
  • Standing still during the redirect. Paddle Star! (Q) is redirectable mid-flight, but your character is rooted in place if you never move during the cast. Throw Q, then immediately walk sideways while reorienting the missile — this is the difference between getting all-inned and surviving the trade.
  • Sitting on Spell Thief (W) drops. Every time anyone dies, every time a Flash or Smite is cast nearby, a glowing icon drops on the floor. Walk over it. New players forget W exists for 20 minutes at a time. A picked-up Ignite plus your Q burst is often a free solo kill.
  • Ulting offensively at level 6. Portal Jump (R) is a 1-second blink with a tiny range. Treat it as a dodge tool (sidestep an Ahri charm, dodge a Lux Q) before you treat it as a gap-closer. Going aggressive with R first usually puts you in melee range of a champion that will delete you (Yasuo, Akali, Talon).
  • Standing in the front of a teamfight. Zoe has no defensive ability and no real escape — you are a glass cannon (a champion that does high damage and has very low defenses, like the ADCs). One Q + E from the back, then walk backward. Front-line Zoe dies.

Advanced tip

Practice the Q redirect from fog of war. Stand in a brush or behind your jungle wall, throw Paddle Star! (Q) without aiming directly at the target, let it travel for ~0.5-0.7 seconds (the longer it flies, the more damage it deals on impact), then redirect it to its real target during the moment they have lost vision on you. Because Paddle Star!'s damage scales with total travel distance and not just final-segment distance, a fog redirect with one full second of pre-travel hits noticeably harder than a straight line from the same starting point. Pro players use this to one-shot enemy laners on objective spawns; for you it just turns every river bush into a 350-damage poke at minute 10.
