Core Abilities

Time In A Bottle
Stores Experience over time. Right-click an ally who is close to leveling up to share the bottle and finish their level — Zilean gets the same XP back.
Time Bomb
Time Bomb
Toss a bomb at a target spot. It sticks to the first unit nearby (priority to champions) and explodes after 3 seconds for area magic damage.
Rewind
Rewind
Reduces the cooldowns of Zilean's other basic abilities. Lets you stack two Time Bombs for a guaranteed point-blank stun.
Time Warp
Time Warp
Targeted buff: slows an enemy's movement speed or speeds up an ally's. Your main peel and engage tool.
Chronoshift
Chronoshift
Place a protective rune on an ally for 5 seconds. If they would take lethal damage in that window they go into stasis on the spot and then revive there with part of their HP. Nothing teleports anywhere.

Why these runes

Inspiration primary: Unsealed Spellbook lets Zilean swap summoners during the game (Exhaust early, Teleport mid game). Hextech Flashtraption replaces Flash on cooldown with a 2-second channel for repositioning under Chronoshift, and Cosmic Insight raises spell uptime.

Why secondary

Sorcery secondary: Manaflow Band fixes Zilean's tight starting mana so he can spam Q in lane without recalling, and Transcendence pushes the ability haste needed to chain Q + W + Q rotations at a comfortable pace.

When to switch secondary

If the enemy team has 2+ engage threats (Leona, Rell, Malphite), swap Sorcery to Resolve with Bone Plating (lowers burst damage in the first 1.5s of trading) and Revitalize (+5% heal and shield power, and 10% stronger on targets below 40% health).

Win Condition

Stack Time Bombs (Q + W + Q) to land a guaranteed stun, then use Chronoshift on the diving ally so your ADC trades through enemy burst with a free revive.

Weakness

No reliable disengage and only one short-range CC tool. If the enemy lands a hard engage on you before Chronoshift is up, the trade is lost and you have no panic button.

Overview

Zilean is a utility mage support whose entire identity is built around time. His passive Time In A Bottle quietly catches up an ally's level whenever Zilean falls behind, his ult Chronoshift is the only ability that revives an ally, and his stun is a stacked Time Bomb combo that needs precise timing rather than aim. He has decent magic damage in lane (Q-W-Q bursts a low-HP enemy) but he is not a kill-lane support: the win comes from sustaining your ADC, peeling diving threats, and bringing back the most valuable ally during fights.

The game plan is built in three phases. In lane (levels 1-5), use the Time Bomb stack to punish over-extension and Time Warp to peel away from hooks and engages. From level 6 to 11, Chronoshift opens the dive game: your ADC can make very aggressive trades knowing they have a free revive, and your jungler will dive towers under it. After level 11 you become a roaming peeler: place wards, drop Chronoshift on the most valuable carry every fight, and chain stuns on whoever steps onto your team's frontline.

Recommended Build

Starting items: World Atlas World Atlas (there is one support starter and every support buys it) + 2 Health Potion Health Potions. It grants gold and sustain, and upgrades on its own into Runic Compass Runic Compass and then Bounty of Worlds Bounty of Worlds as it earns you gold. At that point you choose one of five finishers, free. Celestial Opposition Celestial Opposition is the right pick for Zilean, because its damage reduction rewards standing in range to peel — but it is a choice you make, not an automatic upgrade.

Core items (in order):

  1. Imperial Mandate Imperial Mandate — first item for utility supports. Its passive rewards hard crowd control, not slows: every time your Time Bomb stun (Q + W + Q) lands, the target is marked Vulnerable (takes 7% more damage from everyone for 4 seconds), and your stun-setup abilities gain +20 ability haste so the combo comes back faster. Patch 26.13 rebuilt the path around a support's income: the old 850-gold Blasting Wand is out, and the item now assembles from Bandleglass Mirror Bandleglass Mirror (900 gold) plus two Amplifying Tome Amplifying Tomes (400 gold each). Once the Mirror is done, 400 gold in your pocket still buys a piece of the item; with the old Blasting Wand it bought nothing. After both Tomes there is still 700 gold of assembly left, so the last step is the heavy one. The same patch cut the item's ability power to 60: buy it for the Vulnerable mark and the mana regen, not because it is the biggest ability power chunk in your build — it no longer is.
  2. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity — boots of choice because Zilean lives and dies by spell uptime. Cuts both summoner spell and ability cooldowns.
  3. Redemption Redemption — heal-from-anywhere active. Drop it on a teamfight area or under a tower dive to swing the trade. Pairs naturally with Chronoshift in the "save the ADC" combo.
  4. Cosmic Drive Cosmic Drive — ability haste, movement speed, ability power. Lets Zilean kite while still landing Time Bombs at the edge of fights.
  5. Shurelya's Battlesong Shurelya's Battlesong — your last item. The active gives every nearby ally 30% Move Speed for 4 seconds, and that is the one buff that genuinely stacks with the Time Warp (E) ally speed-up: press both and the team crosses the ground before the enemy can reposition. Do not buy Ardent Censer Ardent Censer here — its Sanctify only fires when you heal or shield an ally, and the only Health Zilean restores is the Chronoshift revive itself.

Situational items:

  • Mikael's Blessing Mikael's Blessing — into hard single-target CC on your ADC (Morgana Q, Ashe R, Leona R). It removes the crowd control from your carry and heals them 100-250. It does not work on knock-ups or suppression, so against Rell and Nautilus it does not save you from the engage, only from what comes after it.
  • Locket of the Iron Solari Locket of the Iron Solari — into team-wide burst compositions (Malphite R, Kennen R, Yasuo). The shield is an active you have to press as the engage lands: 290-360 to every nearby ally, decaying over 2.5 seconds, on a 90-second cooldown. Supports die with it still charged.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — into healing-heavy enemies (Soraka, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo). Every Time Bomb that connects applies 40% healing reduction.
  • Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil — into single-target magic CC that can pick you off (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun).

Boots: Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity is default. Mercury's Treads is acceptable when the enemy team is 3+ AP / hard CC.

Skill order: Max Q first (main damage and stun setup), E second (peel and engage tool), W last. Be clear about what W last costs you: the only thing W scales is its own cooldown, from 14 seconds down to 6, and your only crowd control needs Q → W → Q. Leaving it at rank 1 from level 3 to level 14 puts your stun on a 14-second timer for the whole laning phase. It is still the right call, because Q damage is what wins lane trades, but it is a trade rather than a free choice. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Inspiration with Unsealed Spellbook, Hextech Flashtraption, Biscuit Delivery, Cosmic Insight. Secondary Sorcery with Manaflow Band and Transcendence. Shards: Ability Haste / Adaptive Force / Health Scaling.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Zilean beats

  • Enchanter that scales on healing

Zilean's Time Bomb Q chain detonates in an area and bursts down Soraka before Astral Infusion W heals can save the ADC. She pays her own Health every time she heals, leaving her vulnerable, and Chronoshift R then guarantees Zilean's ADC survives the brief 2v2 trade window.

    Soraka
  • Enchanter that scales on healing

Zilean's Time Bomb Q chain detonates in an area and bursts down Karma before Inspire E shields her carry. Inner Flame Q only slows, so Time Warp E self-speed walks out of it, and Chronoshift R guarantees Zilean's ADC survives the 2v2 burst trade.

    Karma
  • Enchanter that scales on healing

Zilean's Time Bomb Q chain detonates in an area and bursts down Lulu before Help, Pix! E shield reaches her ADC. Whimsy W polymorph is single target and cannot stop a bomb already stuck from detonating, and Chronoshift R guarantees Zilean's ADC survives the trade.

    Lulu
  • Immobile hyper-carry on enemy team

Time Warp E slow plus Time Bomb Q stun pin down dash-less Jinx before she kites the fight. Get Excited! passive movement speed only triggers on takedowns, and if the engage flips, Chronoshift R undoes the all-in by reviving the most threatened ally.

    Jinx
  • Immobile hyper-carry on enemy team

Time Warp E slow plus Time Bomb Q stun pin down dash-less Kog'Maw before he kites with Bio-Arcane Barrage W bonus range and percent-HP on-hit damage. Icathian Surprise passive is irrelevant if Chronoshift R revives Zilean's ADC after the brief 2v2 burst window.

    Kog Maw

Champions that beat Zilean

  • Point-and-click engage tank

Leona's Zenith Blade E plus Solar Flare R chain locks Zilean before he can drop a Time Bomb Q. Shield of Daybreak Q follow-up stun chains the CC, and the engage is near-guaranteed because Sunlight passive marks every ally auto for bonus damage on the locked-down target.

    Leona
  • Point-and-click engage tank

Rell's Ferromancy Crash Down W is a fixed-distance dash with AOE knock-up that locks Zilean before he can drop a Time Bomb Q. Shattering Strike Q stuns and wipes shields on top of the all-in, and Magnet Storm R pull chains the kill before Chronoshift R can revive.

    Rell
  • Point-and-click engage tank

Nautilus's Dredge Line Q hook plus Depth Charge R chain knock-up lock Zilean before he can drop a Time Bomb Q. Staggering Blow passive triggers root on the first auto, and Riptide E slow zone prevents Time Warp E kite from saving the ADC.

    Nautilus
  • Hook-based picker

Blitzcrank's Rocket Grab Q one-shots Zilean's positioning, pulling him from outside Time Bomb Q range. Power Fist E knock-up chains the punish, and Static Field R silence locks Zilean out of Rewind W and Chronoshift R during the kill setup window.

    Blitzcrank
  • Hook-based picker

Pyke's Bone Skewer Q one-shots Zilean's positioning, pulling him from outside Time Bomb Q range. Phantom Undertow E blink chains the punish, and Death From Below R execute resets on assist for snowball chains through Chronoshift R revives.

    Pyke

Key matchups

  • Soraka: Even matchup, decided by who procs their support item more. Stack Time Bomb early — her healing capacity drops once she hits half mana, and Zilean's Q range out-pokes her Starcall slow.
  • Leona: Hard matchup. Save Time Warp (E) for the moment she throws Zenith Blade (E, the dash and root) and slow her so your ADC walks away. Never stand at melee range pre-6.
  • Blitzcrank: Vision matters more than dueling. Ward the lane brush every 30 seconds; if a hook lands on you with no Chronoshift up, the lane is gone. Keep a minion between you and Blitzcrank when you walk up to poke.
  • Lulu: Even but tedious. Lulu's Whimsy (polymorph) locks you out of casting the second Q, so it breaks the stack before it starts; bait it out with a sidestep first, then commit.
  • Pyke: Chronoshift triggers on lethal damage whatever the source, Death From Below included — it is not bypassed. The real problem is that his R resets on an assist, so he can execute the ally you have just revived. Track his ult and pre-cast Chronoshift on the lowest-HP teammate before fights.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3: All three basic abilities online. Q + W + Q stuns for 1.1 seconds at rank 1, reaching 1.5 at rank 5. At level 3 that is two basic attacks from your ADC, not a full rotation: it pins the target, it does not kill it on its own.
  • Level 6: First Chronoshift unlocks the dive game. Your jungler can tower-dive bot lane under your revive; pre-cast it on the diver as they enter tower range.
  • Imperial Mandate completion (~ minute 13-15): Every Time Bomb stun now marks the target Vulnerable — they take 7% more damage from your whole team for 4 seconds, so a landed Q + W + Q turns into a free burst window for your ADC. The same item also shaves cooldown off your stun setup, so the combo comes back faster every fight. The completion timing has not moved, because the total cost did not change; the road there did. Bandleglass Mirror on the first back already hands you ability power, ability haste and mana regen, and every 400-gold Amplifying Tome after it is a purchase a support can actually afford between waves.
  • Level 11: Chronoshift cooldown drops to 90 seconds, and you have second R + Cosmic Drive online. From here you can cover every objective fight (drake, herald, baron) with at least one revive ready.

Common mistakes

  • Throwing Q for poke without W on hand. A single Time Bomb is just damage; a double Time Bomb is a stun. Always start the combo when Rewind (W) is off cooldown — otherwise you give up your only CC for 14 seconds at rank 1 and the trade collapses.
  • Wasting Chronoshift on yourself early. The revive on Zilean is a panic button, not a strategy. Pre-cast it on the carry (the ADC or fed mid-laner) before fights; your own death matters less than theirs.
  • Saving Time Warp for "later". E is on a 15-second cooldown — use it offensively to slow a hook setup or a melee engage, then W cuts its cooldown for the disengage moments later. Hoarding it means the fight ends before you press it.
  • Standing in the front line. Zilean is squishy (mage HP without dash). Sit behind the ADC, throw Time Bomb past your front line, and only step up to drop Chronoshift on the diver.
  • Walking up without vision. Pre-6 a hook lane (Blitzcrank, Pyke, Thresh) can pick off Zilean from a brush in two seconds. Buy Stealth Wards every recall and place them in the lane brush before pushing.

Advanced tip

Practice the double-bomb pre-engage: throw Q on the ground next to your ADC, then immediately W to reset and Q again on the same spot. The first bomb sticks to an enemy who walks over it; the second bomb detonates the first, applying the stun. Done correctly this gives you a stun that lands the moment the enemy steps forward — no skillshot needed. It is the most consistent way to set up an all-in for a melee jungler like Vi or Lee Sin.
