Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet procs every time the double-bomb stun lands, adding burst on top of Time Bomb damage. Manaflow Band fixes Zilean's tight starting mana, Transcendence pushes ability haste so Rewind chains the bomb stack faster, and Scorch closes poke at low HP.
Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery covers the early mana issues before Manaflow Band stacks, and Cosmic Insight reduces both summoner cooldowns and item active cooldowns (Zhonya's, Banshee's).
If the enemy mid is a mobile assassin (Zed, Talon, Akali), swap Inspiration to Resolve with Bone Plating (cuts the first 3 hits of incoming burst by 30 to 60 damage each, by level) and Revitalize (+5% heal and shield power, +10% on targets below 40% HP).
Win Condition
Land a double Time Bomb stun on a priority target, burst them with Luden's Echo and Cosmic Drive damage, then use Chronoshift on yourself or the jungler to flip a 2v1 collapse.
Weakness
No dash and a 3-second wind-up on the stun. If the enemy mid is mobile (Yasuo, Akali, Sylas), they enter your face before the bomb arms and you cannot kite away.
Overview
Zilean mid is a burst-utility mage who trades the standard "delete the carry" identity of mid laners for a "control the tempo of every fight" identity. His double Time Bomb stack is a guaranteed point-blank stun on any target without a dash, and his ultimate Chronoshift turns every objective fight into a 5v6 — your team plays one extra death-saved engage. Damage is real (Luden's Echo + Cosmic Drive give him decent burst) but the role is utility-first: you set up kills for the jungler and the ADC rather than soloing the side lane.
The game plan in lane is to push for level 2 first, drop Q on the wave to get the Arcane Comet proc, and stack two bombs (Q-W-Q) the moment the enemy steps to last-hit a melee minion. From level 6 onwards, Chronoshift unlocks aggressive river plays — you can dive an enemy jungle camp at half HP because the revive bails you out if the counter-gank shows up. In team fights, target priority enemies with the stun stack and pre-cast Chronoshift on your most fed carry before the engage triggers.
Recommended Build
Starting items: Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potions. Doran's gives ability power, mana regeneration, and HP — every stat Zilean needs in lane. Skip Corrupting Potion: the ring's mana regen is worth more.
Core items (in order):
Luden's Echo — first item. Burst proc on Time Bomb explosion adds AOE damage to your stun setup, and its 600 mana frees you to spam Q in lane.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity — boots of choice for the summoner and ability haste. Zilean's value scales linearly with spell uptime.
Cosmic Drive — ability haste, movement speed, ability power. Speeds up your kiting in fights and tightens the cooldown gap between Rewind and the next Q.
Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game scaling multiplier. Once the cap is online your Time Bomb burst doubles as a finisher on any squishy under 40% HP.
Shadowflame — extra burst, and the Cinderbloom passive (your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% HP for 20% extra damage; its 15 magic penetration is flat and never changes with the target's health) lines up cleanly with Time Bomb finishers.
Situational items:
Zhonya's Hourglass — into divers and assassins (Zed, Talon, Diana). Stasis active gives 2.5 seconds for Chronoshift to expire and the team to peel.
Banshee's Veil — into single-target magic CC (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun).
Morellonomicon — into healing-stacking compositions (Soraka mid, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo top). Applies 40% healing reduction on damage.
Void Staff — the moment any priority target buys their first magic resist item.
Boots:
Ionian Boots of Lucidity is default. Sorcerer's Shoes is acceptable when you go AP burst-first and the enemy team is squishy across the board.
Skill order: Max Q first (main damage and stun setup), W second (lower Rewind cooldown means stuns more often), E last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight, or Resolve with Bone Plating and Revitalize if the enemy mid is a mobile assassin.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Zilean beats
Immobile control mage without dash
Zilean's double Time Bomb Q stun lands on stationary Anivia — she has no dash to dodge the second bomb proc. He then burst-trades with Luden's Echo before she can answer with Flash Frost Q, and Glacial Storm R zone is too slow to threaten Zilean kiting with Time Warp E.
AniviaImmobile control mage without dash
Zilean's double Time Bomb Q stun lands on stationary Viktor — he has no dash to dodge the second bomb proc. He then burst-trades with Luden's Echo before Viktor can answer with Gravity Field W stun setup, and Hextech Ray E laser is dodged by Time Warp E self-speed.
ViktorImmobile control mage without dash
Zilean's double Time Bomb Q stun lands on stationary Veigar — he has no dash to dodge the second bomb proc. He then burst-trades with Luden's Echo before Veigar can answer with Event Horizon E cage, and Dark Matter W delayed AOE is sidestepped by Time Warp E self-speed.
VeigarLong-range artillery mage with weak escape
Time Warp E slow plus a Time Bomb Q under his feet pins Azir in place. Shifting Sands E needs his soldiers nearby for the dash, and Conquering Sands Q soldier movement is too slow to escape. A clean Q + W + Q chain stuns Azir before Emperor's Divide R cast.
AzirLong-range artillery mage with weak escape
Time Warp E slow plus a Time Bomb Q under his feet pins Ziggs in place. Satchel Charge W self-knockback is short and telegraphed — Zilean predicts the displacement and re-aims the second Q. A clean Q + W + Q chain stuns Ziggs before Mega Inferno Bomb R goes off.
Ziggs
Champions that beat Zilean
Wind Wall caster with multi-dashes
Yasuo's Wind Wall W deletes Zilean's incoming Time Bomb Q mid-flight, voiding the entire stun setup. Sweeping Blade E dashes through the bomb area before it arms, and Last Breath R locks Zilean during his Rewind W cooldown when he has no escape mobility.
YasuoHigh-mobility skirmisher with multi-dashes
Yone's Mortal Steel Q dash at 2 stacks and Soul Unbound E close the 900-unit Time Bomb Q range before the bomb arms, and his spirit form crosses the blast while his body stays behind. Fate Sealed R then pulls Zilean into the team after his Rewind W cooldown.
YoneHigh-mobility assassin
Zed's Living Shadow W swap closes the 900-unit Time Bomb Q cast range in under a second, and Death Mark R untargetable dash lands on Zilean during the bomb wind-up. Razor Shuriken Q chunks Zilean while Rewind W is on cooldown for the second stun.
ZedHigh-mobility assassin
Talon's Assassin's Path E wall-hop closes the 900-unit Time Bomb Q cast range from terrain angles Zilean cannot predict. Noxian Diplomacy Q empowered crit plus Rake W stack Blade's End bleed bursting Zilean before the double-bomb chain completes.
TalonHigh-mobility assassin
Akali's Shuriken Flip E dashes to a marked target, closing Time Bomb Q cast range instantly. Twilight Shroud W invisibility cancels Zilean's bomb target acquisition, and Perfect Execution R chains two dashes onto Zilean during the no-Rewind window.
Akali
Key matchups
- Anivia / Veigar: Favored. Both lack a dash, so the Q + W + Q stun lands clean. Stun set, then walk forward and auto-attack twice — Anivia's Flash Frost is too slow to retaliate before the stun expires.
- Viktor: Even. His Hextech Ray (E) clears the wave faster than your Time Bomb in early game, but Rewind lets you trade two Q's per his one E. Save Time Warp for the moment he commits Gravity Field.
- Yasuo: Hard matchup. Yasuo's Wind Wall blocks your only ranged damage tool, and his Sweeping Blade dashes close every 0.5 seconds when minions are around. Stack Q at point-blank only after he uses Wind Wall.
- Sylas: Tilted matchup. He steals Chronoshift with Hijack (R) every 80 seconds at rank 1, down to 30 at rank 3, which means the team utility you bring is also fueling him. Buy
Zhonya's Hourglass early so you survive his Kingslayer all-in. - Twisted Fate: Roam priority race. Both of you affect side lanes more than lane 1v1. Push the wave fast with Q, then follow his Destiny (R) with your own roam — your Time Warp speed buff on the jungler is the response to a Gold Card pickoff.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3: All three basic abilities online. Q + W + Q stuns for 1.1 seconds at Q rank 1, up to 1.5 at rank 5 — long enough for an auto-attack, then another Q once Rewind comes off cooldown.
- Level 6: First Chronoshift unlocks aggressive river plays. You can dive into deep enemy jungle vision because the revive saves you on the counter-gank.
- Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 12-14): Wave control flips because Time Bomb on the back-line minion clears it in one cast. You free up time for river rotations and Scuttle Crab fights.
- Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 24-28): Your full combo (Q + W + Q + auto + ignite + Comet proc) one-shots any squishy below 1700 HP that has not built magic resist. Force objective fights as soon as the cap completes.
Common mistakes
- Throwing Q for harass without W on hand. A single Time Bomb is just damage; a double Time Bomb is a stun. Always start the Q chain when Rewind is off cooldown — otherwise you give up your only CC and the trade collapses.
- Wasting Chronoshift on yourself early. The revive on Zilean is a panic button. Pre-cast it on the fed teammate (the ADC or jungler) before fights; the revive on a 0/3 Zilean changes nothing.
- Standing in maximum Q range during teamfights. 900 cast range puts you outside your team's peel. Stand at the second-furthest position so a flank does not delete you mid-channel.
- Skipping wards in mid. Zilean has no dash and a 3-second stun wind-up. A jungle gank from river fog kills you in two hits before the bomb arms. Buy a Stealth Ward every recall.
- Hard-shoving without a follow-up plan. Pushing mid means you commit to a roam or to invading enemy jungle. Pushing without going anywhere just hands the wave priority back.
Advanced tip
Practice the R-on-yourself dive: walk past the enemy mid's tower edge, cast Chronoshift on yourself as you cross the tower line, then drop your full Q + W + Q stun on the priority target inside their jungle. If the dive fails, the revive saves you. If the dive succeeds, you take a kill in 4v5 territory and recall safely. The trick is to cast R on yourself before you take the first tower shot, not after — Chronoshift's revive triggers on lethal damage, but the tower's auto-attack damage stacks fast enough to outpace the revive timing if you cast late.
