Core Abilities

Short Fuse
Every few seconds Ziggs' next basic attack deals bonus magic damage. Casting any ability shortens this cooldown — weave autos between spells for free damage.
Bouncing Bomb
Bouncing Bomb
Linear bomb that bounces up to twice and explodes once, dealing magic damage in a small area. Main poke and waveclear tool. Thrown at 850 range, it reaches 1400 with the bounces.
Satchel Charge
Satchel Charge
Throws an explosive that detonates on recast, knocking enemies away. Ziggs is also knocked by the blast — your only escape and a tool to displace divers.
Hexplosive Minefield
Hexplosive Minefield
Scatters a ring of mines that slow and damage enemies on contact. Your zoning tool: drops a no-go zone for divers and slows targets into your other spells.
Mega Inferno Bomb
Mega Inferno Bomb
Global-range bomb that lands after a travel delay. Massive damage at the center, 65% of it at the edges. Snipes low-HP enemies across the map or wipes grouped fights.

Why these runes

Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet procs off your Q at long range, where its damage amp is maxed. Manaflow Band sustains Q spam, Transcendence adds 5 ability haste at level 5 and 5 more at level 8, Scorch closes kills on enemies sitting at 30-40% HP after a Q exchange.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery covers the mana hunger of the first 6 levels (Q costs 50-70 mana, you cast it every wave). Cosmic Insight gives more Flash uptime — Flash is your only second escape after Satchel Charge self-knockback.

When to switch secondary

Vs 2+ low-resistance squishies (e.g. Caitlyn + Senna + Zed backline), swap Inspiration to Domination with Cheap Shot (bonus damage on slowed targets — your E mines slow) and Ultimate Hunter (cuts R cooldown per takedown, more cross-map snipes).

Win Condition

Out-range every other mid laner with Bouncing Bomb, shove waves on cooldown to free roams, and use cross-map R to finish low-HP enemies at objectives once Luden's Echo and Shadowflame are online.

Weakness

No dash and the only escape is Satchel Charge self-knockback (long cooldown). Hard countered by divers and gap-close assassins; if Satchel is on cooldown, a dash chain deletes you before you can answer.

Overview

Ziggs is the textbook artillery mage: every part of his kit is built around throwing things at long range and refusing to engage. Short Fuse (P) turns his auto-attacks into a chip-damage tool that resets faster every time he casts a spell, Bouncing Bomb (Q) is one of the longest non-ultimate ranges in the game with bounces that extend it further, Hexplosive Minefield (E) is a slow-and-zone tool he drops on the ground to lock down a path, and Satchel Charge (W) doubles as a self-displacement (Ziggs is knocked back by his own bomb) — his only real escape. The whole kit asks one question: am I in their range or are they in mine? You want the answer to be "mine, every time."

His mid-lane game plan is simple to describe and demanding to execute: throw Q at the wave every cooldown to shove minions, weave a passive-empowered auto-attack into the enemy laner whenever they step up to last-hit, save W for divers and gank exits, and start every fight by dropping E on the spot the enemy must walk through. After level 6, R (Mega Inferno Bomb) lets you join any fight on the map — pings, vision and minimap awareness become as important as mechanics. Ziggs has no dash, no shield, and no heal, so your defensive options are positioning, Flash, Satchel Charge self-knockback, and Zhonya's Hourglass after your first item.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Ring Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potion Health Potions. Doran's Ring solves the mana hunger of Q-on-cooldown poke and gives the AP scaling that lets you one-shot ranged minions with one Q.

Core items (in order):

  1. Luden's Echo Luden's Echo — your first big spike. Mana, ability haste, and the bonus Echo damage on every damaging ability align perfectly with how you throw Q between auto-attacks. Buy it first every game.
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration for the squishy targets you want to delete with R snipes. Default boots unless the enemy has 2+ hard-CC threats and you need Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads for tenacity (reduced duration on stuns and slows).
  3. Shadowflame Shadowflame — extra burst plus Cinderbloom: its 15 magic penetration is flat and never changes with the target's health, while your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% health for 20% extra damage. This is exactly the window where R finishes kills across the map.
  4. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game scaling multiplier (+30% total AP). Build third or fourth depending on whether the enemy team has already bought magic resist items.

Situational items:

  • Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass — into divers and assassins (Zed, Akali, Diana, Talon). Stasis is the only answer Ziggs has when a dash chain crosses his front line (the tanks and bruisers standing up front to absorb hits while you fire from behind). Buy second item if your team has no peeler (someone who can protect you from divers).
  • Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil — into telegraphed single-target magic CC (Ahri Charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate gold card). The shield blocks the first spell that would otherwise lock you for the entire fight.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — into heal-stacking compositions (Soraka mid, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo top). The Grievous Wounds passive (anti-heal) cuts their healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds, so your poke actually translates to dead targets.
  • Void Staff Void Staff — the moment any priority target buys their first magic resist item. Stops the enemy from soft-countering your whole build with a single component.

Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes is default. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity are acceptable if your team needs extra R uptime to snipe across the map.

Skill order: Max Q first (main poke and waveclear), E second (a stronger slow on the minefield), W last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, and 16.

Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Ziggs beats

  • Immobile mage without a dash

Veigar must stand still to cast Dark Matter W delayed AOE and Baleful Strike Q stack farming. Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q outranges his approach and Satchel Charge W self-knockback escapes any Event Horizon E cage attempt before it lands.

    Veigar
  • Immobile mage without a dash

Anivia must stand still to cast Flash Frost Q line stun and Glacial Storm R zone damage. Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q outranges her cast range and Hexplosive Minefield E zones the area she needs to occupy to deal Frostbite E follow-up damage.

    Anivia
  • Immobile mage without a dash

Karthus must stand still to cast Lay Waste Q single-target rings on minions. Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q outranges his approach window, and Satchel Charge W self-knockback escapes Wall of Pain W slow before Karthus closes for the all-in.

    Karthus
  • Immobile mage without a dash

Viktor must stand still to channel Hextech Ray E laser line and Arcane Storm R AOE. Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q outranges Siphon Power Q charged poke, and Hexplosive Minefield E zones his Gravity Field W stun setup before it triggers.

    Viktor
  • Short-range burst mage with no dash

Annie's Disintegrate Q is 625 range and her damage tools are short-range point-and-click. Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q is thrown at 850 and reaches 1400 with bounces, and his Satchel Charge W self-knockback resets the gap whenever Annie walks up for Pyromania setup.

    Annie

Champions that beat Ziggs

  • Mobile assassin with multiple gap-closers

Zed's Living Shadow W swap closes half the lane in a single button, crossing Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q range before he can land more than one poke. Death Mark R untargetable dash lands on Ziggs during Satchel Charge W cooldown, and Razor Shuriken Q chunks through.

    Zed
  • Mobile assassin with multiple gap-closers

Akali's Shuriken Flip E dashes directly to a marked target, bypassing Hexplosive Minefield E slow ring. Twilight Shroud W gives invisibility to escape Q poke, and Perfect Execution R chains two dashes onto Ziggs before Satchel Charge W cooldown resets.

    Akali
  • Mobile assassin with multiple gap-closers

Fizz's Playful / Trickster E makes him untargetable mid-flight, dodging Bouncing Bomb Q and Mega Inferno Bomb R reflexively. Urchin Strike Q closes the remaining distance, and Chum the Waters R lands a guaranteed shark engage on Ziggs during the no-dash window.

    Fizz
  • Wind Wall champion with sustained mobility

Yasuo's Wind Wall W blocks Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q projectile entirely, deleting the poke that keeps him at range. Sweeping Blade E dashes through Hexplosive Minefield E slow ring to close the gap. The lane is lost the moment Yasuo has W up.

    Yasuo
  • Melee skirmisher with a shield and a spirit dash

Yone's Spirit Cleave W shield soaks Bouncing Bomb Q chip on every trade. Soul Unbound E spirit form dashes through Hexplosive Minefield E slow ring while his body stays untargetable, and Fate Sealed R yanks Ziggs out of his backline position into the team.

    Yone

Key matchups

  • Yasuo / Yone: Yasuo's Wind Wall blocks the projectile of your Q; Yone has no wall of his own, only the Spirit Cleave shield. Save Q until Yasuo has spent the wall on a minion bounce, and hold E for the recovery frame to slow them.
  • Diana / Akali: Diving threats with multiple gap-closers (a "gap-closer" is any dash, blink, or jump that crosses ground fast). Buy Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass after Luden's Echo Luden's Echo; never use Flash offensively in lane against them, and drop E (Hexplosive Minefield) between you and them when you see the dash start.
  • Veigar: Stationary mage you out-pressure pre-6. Push him under tower with Q on cooldown, throw W at his feet whenever he steps up to last-hit, and recall before his cage threshold (level 6) flips the lane.
  • Anivia: Even pre-6, she scales harder post-6. Avoid stacking with your wave — her W (Crystallize) wall splits you from your minions and forces a long backline trade where she out-trades you with passive egg. Roam to side lanes the moment your R comes up; she has zero mobility to follow.
  • Twisted Fate: Roam-priority race. If he picks gold card on you, W in front of yourself before he closes (the knockback breaks his auto-attack lock). Otherwise track his R with vision wards on river and tri-bush; if he ults to a side lane, ping bot/top and shove your wave instead of chasing.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2 (Q + E): First spike. With one point in Q plus the E you just learned, you can throw Q to push the wave and follow with E at the enemy's feet if they walk up to last-hit. This window is when you push for first blood with a jungle gank.
  • Level 6 (R unlocked): First Mega Inferno Bomb is up. Cross-map snipes become available — watch the minimap, ping when you see an enemy at low HP (a kill window — "burst" meaning high damage concentrated in 1-2 seconds), and fire R with prediction since the bomb takes time to travel.
  • Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 12-14): Wave control flips ("wave control" = who decides where the minion wave fights, you or the enemy laner). Your Q now one-shots ranged minions, so you can shove and roam with the wave on the enemy's side, freeing the jungler into their bot side.
  • Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 24-28): Your R one-shots squishies that have not built a single magic resist item. Force grouped objective fights here — Baron, Soul Drake, late-game team contests where one bomb hits the whole back line.

Common mistakes

  • Throwing Q at max range for no setup. Q is the spell your whole lane runs on — 50-70 mana on the shortest cooldown you have, cast every wave. A max-range Q that the enemy walks away from is wasted mana you needed for the wave. Throw it where you can stack a Short Fuse auto on top.
  • Holding W as a defensive option only. Satchel Charge is a fight-starter too: drop it under the enemy's feet to knock them into your team (the knockback affects them, not just you). Used aggressively at level 3-4, W is a 70-damage knockback at rank 1 that doubles as an engage tool.
  • Ulting one isolated target. R does massive damage at the center but the edge only deals 65% of it. If only one enemy is in range, a regular Q poke would have done more for less cooldown. Save R for grouped fights or for an out-of-position low-HP enemy who cannot walk out of the blast.
  • Pushing without vision. Ziggs has no escape (no dash, no blink, no shield) except Flash and W self-knockback. Pushing past river without a ward in the enemy jungle is the fastest way to feed an early gank. Place a Stealth Ward or Control Ward in tri-bush before every shove.
  • Auto-attacking without Short Fuse ready. Your passive resets every time you cast a spell, but a normal auto without the passive ready does negligible damage. Always check the icon over your champion before stepping up — if the bomb isn't lit, walk back.

Advanced tip

Practice the W self-knockback escape over walls. When a diver crosses onto you (Zed Death Mark, Akali R, Diana Lunar Rush), drop Satchel Charge (W) between you and them, then detonate it immediately. The blast knocks Ziggs back — and if you stand near a wall, it knocks you over the wall, putting a piece of unwalkable terrain between you and the chase. Specific walls that work from mid lane: the wall behind your mid-lane bush, the tri-bush wall into your jungle, and the raptor camp wall. Practice the timing in the practice tool until you can cast-and-detonate in under 0.3 seconds — at that speed, it beats most dash animations and turns a guaranteed death into a clean escape.
