Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet procs on Bouncing Bomb (Q) long-range pokes, doubling damage every cooldown. Manaflow Band fixes early mana from Q-spam on the wave, Transcendence pushes ability haste for double pokes, Scorch finishes trades at 30-40% HP.
Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery solves Ziggs' mana hunger over the first six minutes and gives free sustain; Cosmic Insight gives extra Flash uptime — Flash is your second escape after Satchel Charge self-knockback, and bot lane has more all-in pressure than mid.
Vs a hyper-engage bot duo (e.g. Leona + Kai'Sa, Nautilus + Samira), swap Inspiration to Resolve with Second Wind (sustain through poke when behind) and Revitalize (boosts every shield/heal your support gives), making the all-in less lethal.
Win Condition
Out-poke the enemy bot lane from the start of the game with Bouncing Bomb, accumulate plate gold off Short Fuse passive, and turn early HP leads into kills with R cross-map snipes after Luden's Echo completes.
Weakness
No dash and no mobility tools beyond Satchel Charge self-knockback. Dive supports (Pyke, Leona, Nautilus) plus hyper-mobile ADCs (Lucian, Kai'Sa) collapse on you before W comes off cooldown if your support cannot peel.
Overview
Ziggs bot is the poke-mage carry option in a lane normally filled by auto-attack ADCs (Caitlyn, Jhin, Ezreal). His kit is identical to Ziggs mid — same passive, same spells — but the role is different: he is paired with an enchanter or peel support (Lulu, Janna, Yuumi, Nami) who shields him while he throws Bouncing Bomb (Q) from outside auto-attack range, and his job is to bleed the enemy bot duo's HP bar one trade at a time, then convert the HP lead into plate gold using Short Fuse (P) auto-attacks on the tier 1 turret. Late-game, he becomes a second AP threat his team can use to wipe grouped fights with Mega Inferno Bomb (R) while the support keeps him alive.
His bot-lane game plan splits into two phases. Phase 1 (lane, levels 1-9): throw Q at the enemy ADC every cooldown, weave a passive auto onto whoever steps up to last-hit, and use W purely defensively to break engage hooks (Blitzcrank, Nautilus, Pyke, Thresh). Phase 2 (mid-game, levels 9+): R comes online with shorter cooldowns and you become the lane that wins from across the map — recall pings, drake setups, and cross-map sniping all become available the moment you complete Luden's Echo. Bot Ziggs is more vulnerable than mid Ziggs because the enemy support is built around all-in or hook engage. Without a peel support of your own, you lose; with one, you out-scale every ADC matchup in the game.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Doran's Ring + 2
Health Potions. Doran's Ring fixes mana costs of Q-on-cooldown and gives the AP scaling Ziggs cares about over flat damage. Skip Corrupting Potion unless the enemy support is heavy auto-attack harass (Pantheon, Pyke melee phase).
Core items (in order):
Luden's Echo — your first major spike. The 600 bonus mana lets you throw Q on cooldown, the 10 ability haste shortens it further, and Echo fires six bolts off every damaging ability, splashing onto whatever stands next to your target. Buy first every game.
Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration for the squishy ADCs and supports you want to delete with bounces of Q. Default boots unless the enemy bot has 2+ CC threats, then
Mercury's Treads for tenacity (reduced duration on stuns, slows, roots).
Shadowflame — 110 ability power and a flat 15 magic penetration that never changes with the target's health, plus the Cinderbloom passive: your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% health for 20% extra damage. Lines up exactly with the kills you finish with R snipes across the map.
Rabadon's Deathcap — 130 ability power plus Magical Opus, which increases your total ability power by another 30%. Buy third or fourth depending on whether the enemy already has magic resist.
Situational items:
Zhonya's Hourglass — into dive comps with multiple gap-closers (a "gap-closer" is any dash, blink or jump that crosses ground fast — Leona + Kai'Sa, Pyke + Tristana). Stasis covers the moment the dash chain crosses your peel (someone protecting you, usually your support). Often the right second item if your support is squishy themselves.
Banshee's Veil — into telegraphed single-target magic CC (Morgana Q, Twisted Fate gold card if he roams bot, Ahri Charm bot lane). The shield blocks the spell that would otherwise lock you for the entire fight.
Morellonomicon — into heal-stacking comps (Soraka support, Yuumi as the enemy support, Senna stacks). The Grievous Wounds passive (anti-heal) cuts their healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds, so your poke actually translates to dead enemies.
Void Staff — the moment any priority target buys their first magic resist item (usually the enemy support first). Stops the enemy from soft-countering your whole build with one component.
Boots:
Sorcerer's Shoes is default.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity are acceptable if your team needs more R uptime for cross-map snipes.
Skill order: Max Q first (main poke and plate damage), E second (mine damage only: the 40% slow, its 1.5 seconds and the 16-second cooldown are identical at every rank), W last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, and 16. Take W at level 2 (not E) when the enemy support is a hook champion (Blitzcrank, Nautilus, Pyke, Thresh) — you need the self-knockback online ASAP.
Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Ziggs beats
Long-range immobile ADC
Caitlyn's 90 Caliber Net E is her only dash and goes backward — not a real escape. Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q reaches 850 units, past Caitlyn's 650 auto-attack range, so he chips her for free and only walks into his own 550 attack range for a Short Fuse proc when she is already low.
CaitlynLong-range immobile ADC
Senna has no dash at all and her Curse of the Black Mist E only camouflages her at melee range to an ally. Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q reaches 850 units, past Senna's 600-unit base attack range, so he chips her every cooldown while she has to step up to collect souls.
SennaTelegraphed-hook engage support
Blitzcrank's Rocket Grab Q is a slow-projectile hook with a long cast time. Ziggs' Satchel Charge W self-knockback knocks him backward out of the hook landing zone — even if the hook connects. Hexplosive Minefield E zones the Power Fist E follow-up engage.
BlitzcrankTelegraphed-hook engage support
Nautilus's Dredge Line Q is a slow-projectile hook with a long cast time. Ziggs' Satchel Charge W self-knockback knocks him backward out of the hook landing zone — even if the hook connects. Hexplosive Minefield E zones the Riptide E follow-up wave damage.
NautilusShort-range dash-engage tank
Leona's Zenith Blade E is an 875-range dash, the longest engage tool in her kit. Ziggs' Hexplosive Minefield E drops a slowing ring between Ziggs and Leona that delays the engage by a full second, giving Satchel Charge W time to reposition out of Solar Flare R.
Leona
Champions that beat Ziggs
Hyper-mobile ADC with multiple dashes
Lucian chains dashes inside Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q range — Relentless Pursuit E plus Lightslinger passive double-tap auto procs let him weave dashes between Q bounces. Piercing Light Q line poke chunks Ziggs through Satchel Charge W cooldown windows.
LucianHyper-mobile ADC with multiple dashes
Kai'Sa closes ground inside Ziggs' Bouncing Bomb Q range — Supercharge E (invisible once evolved) plus the Killer Instinct R warp, which also hands her a shield on arrival, carry her through the Hexplosive Minefield E slow ring. Second Skin Plasma stacks then burst him.
Kai SaWind-wall / dash-in dive ADC
Samira's Blade Whirl W destroys the Bouncing Bomb Q projectile entirely while spinning. Wild Rush E dashes through any enemy including minions, resetting on kill to chain across the wave onto Ziggs, and Inferno Trigger R deletes him in seconds.
SamiraWind-wall / dash-in dive ADC
Tristana's Rocket Jump W is a 900-range dash that resets on takedown, letting her chain dashes onto Ziggs through Hexplosive Minefield E slow ring. Buster Shot R knock-back is too short to reposition Ziggs out of his Explosive Charge E ticks back on her.
TristanaRoam-and-execute engage support
Pyke's Bone Skewer Q hook plus Death From Below R executes targets below an HP threshold — exactly the HP Ziggs sits at after a trade. Phantom Undertow E blink chains the punish, and Gift of the Drowned Ones passive heals Pyke in stealth.
Pyke
Key matchups
- Caitlyn / Senna: Long-range ADCs you out-range with Q. Throw Q at the spot they have to walk to for last-hits; if Caitlyn places a trap (W), do not stand on it but feel free to throw Q through it to chip her HP. Recall before her level-6 ult timing (Ace in the Hole).
- Lucian / Kai'Sa: Hyper-mobile ADC threats. Hold W for their gap-close (Lucian Relentless Pursuit, Kai'Sa Supercharge), and drop E (Hexplosive Minefield) at your own feet when you see the dash animation start. Buy
Zhonya's Hourglass second item. - Blitzcrank / Pyke / Thresh / Nautilus: Hook supports. Always stand behind a minion when you cast Q — the hook prioritises whatever is in front, and the minion eats it for you. If a hook lands on you, W at your own feet and detonate immediately: the knockback breaks the follow-up before they can stun you.
- Leona / Rell / Nautilus engage: Wait for the dash to commit, then W at your feet to knock the tank off you, E behind you to prevent the chase, and ping your support for peel. Never face-check a bush against them.
- Yuumi support: Annoying but soft. The enemy support is permanently attached to their ADC, so your R in a bot-lane skirmish hits both at once. Force fights when you have R up; she has no escape if the ADC dies and she detaches.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2 (Q + W): First spike. With one point in Q and W unlocked, you can punish any hook attempt (W self-knockback) and still throw Q to push the wave. Most level-2 all-ins from the enemy lose to a clean W detonation.
- Level 6 (R unlocked): Mega Inferno Bomb comes online. Bot lane is rarely the place to use R for kills (the lane is short and Q already wins trades), but cross-map snipes onto a low-HP top laner or jungler become available the moment you ping for one.
- Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 12-14): Wave control flips ("wave control" = who decides where the minion wave fights, you or the enemy laner). Your Q now one-shots ranged minions, so you shove the wave on cooldown to free your support to roam mid or take river vision for drake.
- Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 24-28): Your R one-shots every squishy on the enemy team. Force grouped 5v5 fights at Baron and Soul Drake; with Q spam adding chip damage between R, you out-trade any enemy ADC who doesn't have a peel support of their own.
Common mistakes
- Throwing Q at max range without a wave to bounce off. Q is only efficient when the bounce lands on top of an enemy. A naked Q at maximum range with no minion to chip first wastes the cooldown — wait until the enemy ADC steps near a caster minion you can clip through.
- Auto-attacking instead of Q for last-hits. Your auto-attack damage is low; missing a Q because you wanted to auto a low-HP minion costs you up to 70 mana and a wave of priority. Use Q for last-hits whenever the wave is far enough back that the cast cooldown is not wasted.
- Walking forward when the enemy support has not used engage. Engage supports (Blitzcrank, Leona, Nautilus, Pyke, Thresh, Rell) have one job: catch you out of position. If you have not seen their engage spell go off in the last 10 seconds, assume it is up and stand behind a minion.
- Saving R for the bot lane. Most kills in bot lane come from Q burst plus your support's CC. R is more valuable as a cross-map kill closer or wave-clear bomb when the enemy team starts grouping for an objective. Look at the minimap every 5 seconds when R is up.
- Using W offensively in lane. Bot lane has too much engage potential. Satchel Charge (W) is your only escape — burn it as a poke tool in lane and the next Blitzcrank hook or Leona engage kills you uncontested. Keep it ready.
Advanced tip
Practice the plate-and-roam tempo. After level 6, when Luden's Echo is about to come online, push the wave hard with Q on cooldown, weave a Short Fuse auto onto the bot-lane tier 1 turret (the empowered attack hits harder than a plain one, so plates fall faster), grab one or two plates of gold, then recall with full HP and mana. Buy
Luden's Echo plus
Stealth Ward (free trinket reset on recall) and walk to the mid-lane river. With Q up and R up, you create kill pressure on the enemy mid and jungler at the same time. This single pre-recall plate plus mid-lane roam is what separates a passive Ziggs bot from one who carries the game by minute 16.
