26.18

Core Abilities

Way of the Hunter
Every second auto-attack deals bonus magic damage. He also gets double critical strike chance from every other source, and since Patch 26.17 his crits land at 95% of a normal crit instead of 90%.
Mortal Steel
Mortal Steel
Stab in a line, treated as a basic attack. At two stacks the next Q becomes a dash that knocks airborne (knock-up = lifts the target into the air, briefly stunning them).
Spirit Cleave
Spirit Cleave
Cone slash that damages enemies and grants Yone a shield. Shield scales with the number of champions hit. Cast time and cooldown scale with attack speed.
Soul Unbound
Soul Unbound
Yone's spirit leaves his body for a few seconds, gaining move speed. His body is left behind and untargetable; when E ends he snaps back to the body and replays a portion of the damage dealt during the dash.
Fate Sealed
Fate Sealed
Yone blinks behind the last champion in a line and pulls every enemy hit toward his landing spot. Long range knock-up R, scales hard with kit setup.

Why these runes

Conqueror stacks fast on Yone — every Q, W, auto, and the Soul Unbound spirit hits tick it. Triumph refunds HP on takedown, Legend: Bloodline scales lifesteal, Coup de Grace adds +8% under 40% HP for the execute after the Fate Sealed pull.

Why secondary

Bone Plating absorbs the first 3 hits of the trade — exactly the window between Q1 and the Q2 tornado dash. Unflinching gives 10 armor and magic resist while you are crowd controlled and for 2s after, blunting point-and-click stuns mid-fight.

When to switch secondary

If the enemy team has 2+ squishy carries and no point-and-click CC, swap Resolve → Domination with Sudden Impact (bonus true damage after the E dash) + Treasure Hunter (gold on early kills) — snowball the lead instead of surviving.

Win Condition

Stack two Q charges, dash with E to land the tornado knock-up, then R the airborne target. Mid-game roam side lanes after Immortal Shieldbow and pick squishies that fall in your R cone.

Weakness

Point-and-click hard CC (Annie stun, Malzahar suppress, Lissandra ult) lands on his body the moment Soul Unbound returns. Long-range artillery (Xerath, Ziggs) shoves him under tower before he reaches melee range.

Overview

Yone is a melee skirmisher built around two ideas: stack two Mortal Steel (Q) charges for a tornado knock-up (a hit that lifts the target into the air, briefly stunning them), and use Soul Unbound (E) as a "free trade" window — his body stays behind, untargetable, while his spirit dashes in and out. The trade-off is real: his entire kill threat lives in a single 3-4 second commit, and any hard CC the moment E returns gives up the trade entirely.

His game plan is to farm safely through the laning phase, reach Immortal Shieldbow + Berserker's Greaves, and then snowball through team fights (snowball = an early lead that grows into more kills, gold, and items) where his Fate Sealed (R) pulls the enemy back line into his team's CC chain. Skill expression sits in two places: timing Soul Unbound during the enemy's burst window, and finding R angles where the cone yanks 2+ enemies — not just a one-target pickoff (eliminating an isolated enemy outside of a team fight).

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Blade + 1 Health Potion. The Doran's gives omnivamp (a small heal on the damage you deal) and AD, which scales with the AD-stacking crit build.

Core items (in order):

  1. Immortal Shieldbow Immortal Shieldbow — first-item default. 25% crit chance, 55 AD, and an HP-threshold passive (a shield that triggers when you drop below 30% HP). It carries no life steal — that comes from Bloodthirster. The shield is the single biggest reason Yone can survive the all-in (full-commit kill attempt) trades his playstyle forces; combined with the Spirit Cleave shield, you get two layered shields in the same fight.
  2. Berserker's Greaves Berserker's Greaves — attack speed boots, 30% since Patch 26.16 instead of 25%. Yone banks that stat twice: Spirit Cleave (W) scales both its cast time and its cooldown with attack speed, so the boots buy shield uptime on top of the damage.
  3. Infinity Edge Infinity Edge — your biggest damage spike. With Way of the Hunter (which doubles crit chance from every other source), Shieldbow + IE puts you at exactly the 100% crit cap: 25% and 25%, doubled. Yone's crits are still damped, but only slightly — Patch 26.17 cut the penalty from -10% to -5%, so they land at 95% of a normal crit instead of 90%. On a 200% base crit plus Infinity Edge's +30% crit damage, that is 218.5% AD per crit instead of 207%.
  4. Bloodthirster Bloodthirster — pure AD, big lifesteal, and an overheal shield. Past three items you cannot stack more crit chance (you are at the cap), so the build pivots into raw AD scaling instead.

Situational items:

  • Mortal Reminder Mortal Reminder — against heavy healing comps (Soraka, Aatrox, Dr. Mundo). Applies Grievous Wounds (cuts healing on the target) for a few seconds whenever you damage them. Buy fourth or fifth, swap with Bloodthirster.
  • Guardian Angel Guardian Angel — against assassin focus or burst (Zed, LeBlanc). The revive gives you a free reset to W-shield and Q-tornado the team that just used everything on you.
  • Maw of Malmortius Maw of Malmortius — against heavy AP burst (Syndra, Veigar, Vladimir). Magic shield + omnivamp under low HP keep you alive long enough to land R and crit them down.
  • Trinity Force Trinity Force — first-item swap when you are ahead in lane and want sticky pressure: Quicken grants 20 Move Speed for 2 seconds on every attack, so you stay on top of a target walking away. It no longer carries a slow. 36 AD, 30% attack speed, 333 health, 15 ability haste and a Spellblade proc (a bonus burst of damage on the auto right after a spell cast) on Q make all-in dives more reliable, but you sacrifice the safety-net shield of Shieldbow.

Boots: Berserker's Greaves is default. Mercury's Treads is the swap when the enemy team has 3+ hard CC sources you cannot dodge with Soul Unbound (E) (targeted stuns, suppresses, grounding effects) — count them honestly, because dropping the 30% attack speed also stretches the W cooldown you lean on when a trade goes wrong.

Skill order: Max Q first (main DPS plus the tornado is your only solo knock-up), E second (lower cooldown means more spirit-form windows), W last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Bloodline, Coup de Grace. Conqueror stacks fastest on Yone because every Q, W cleave, auto-attack, and the spirit hits during Soul Unbound tick it. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating and Unflinching for survivability in melee trades. Lethal Tempo is the alternative keystone for a more attack-speed-focused playstyle and even faster W cooldowns — pick Conqueror against tankier teams, Lethal Tempo into squishy lanes.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Yone beats

  • Immobile mage without a dash

Soul Unbound E makes Yone's body untargetable for the dash duration, so Lay Waste Q rings and Defile E ticks hit empty space if Yone E's away. Karthus has no dash to escape the Mortal Steel tornado knock-up that follows, and Death Defied passive cannot kite Yone's chase.

    Karthus
  • Immobile mage without a dash

Soul Unbound E makes Yone's body untargetable for the dash duration, so Dark Matter W and Primordial Burst R hit empty space if Yone E's away. Veigar has no dash to escape the Mortal Steel tornado knock-up, and Event Horizon E cage is too short to peel Yone in melee range.

    Veigar
  • Immobile mage without a dash

Soul Unbound E makes Yone's body untargetable for the dash duration, so Glacial Storm R zone and Frostbite E procs hit empty space if Yone E's away. Anivia has no dash to escape the Mortal Steel tornado knock-up, and Crystallize W wall offers no displacement.

    Anivia
  • Immobile melee bruiser without disengage

Spirit Cleave W shield plus Soul Unbound E spirit return both outlast Tryndamere's Undying Rage R timer, and Mortal Steel Q knock-up cancels Spinning Slash E mid-trade. Bloodlust Q heals are not enough to outpace Way of the Hunter passive crit chance scaling.

    Tryndamere
  • Immobile melee bruiser without disengage

Spirit Cleave W shield plus Soul Unbound E spirit return outlast Garen's burst window. Garen has no dash to dodge Fate Sealed R, which yanks him out of Judgment E range, and Decisive Strike Q silence cannot interrupt Yone mid Soul Unbound dash.

    Garen

Champions that beat Yone

  • Point-and-click hard CC mid champion

Annie's Disintegrate Q and Incinerate W are point-and-click targeted damage with no projectile to dodge via Soul Unbound. After four spell casts Pyromania makes her next one stun automatically, locking Yone on body return from spirit dash and killing the trade entirely.

    Annie
  • Point-and-click hard CC mid champion

Frozen Tomb R is a point-and-click stun on Yone's body — it lands the instant Soul Unbound snaps him back from the spirit dash, with no projectile to dodge. Ring of Frost W is a self-centered AOE root that cannot miss, and Glacial Path E gives her escape mobility.

    Lissandra
  • Point-and-click hard CC mid champion

Nether Grasp R is a channeled suppress on a single target with no projectile to wall — it lands the instant Soul Unbound snaps Yone back. Void Shift passive cancels the first CC Yone lands, burning his Q tornado knock-up into a useless cooldown trade.

    Malzahar
  • Early-level all-in bruiser

Shield Vault W stuns through Mortal Steel Q wind-up at level 2, locking Yone out of his tornado setup. Comet Spear Q empowered cone bursts Yone's HP before level 6 and Immortal Shieldbow, and Aegis Assault E blocks the auto-attack damage Yone needs to charge Q stacks.

Key matchups

  • Annie: Hard counter. Her Pyromania stun is point-and-click (no skillshot to dodge), and at level 6 her Tibbers (R) deletes you the moment Soul Unbound returns. Stay behind minions, never burn E offensively pre-6, and ask your jungler for an early gank. Buy Maw of Malmortius Maw of Malmortius as your fourth item.
  • Zed: Skill matchup. Use E to be in spirit form during his Death Mark (R) cast: while in spirit form the death mark's bonus damage applies to your body, but you can W-shield up the moment you snap back. Buy Guardian Angel Guardian Angel as your fourth item if he is fed.
  • Yasuo: Mirror melee skirmisher. Whoever lands the tornado knock-up first wins the all-in; both of you have an E-Q reset combo. Save E for defensive escape through minions instead of committing through Yasuo until you have Shieldbow.
  • Karthus: Favourable. His Lay Waste (Q) is a delayed skillshot — use Soul Unbound to dash through the cast window and the damage hits empty space. After 6, Fate Sealed (R) can interrupt his Requiem (R) channel mid-cast.
  • Xerath: Skill matchup. His range out-pokes yours pre-6. Hug the side of the wave to deny his W angle; at 6 use R to blink behind him on objective fights — his only escape is Flash.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: With Q + E you can E-dash through a minion and Q1 for a fast trade. Step back before they can return — at level 2 you have no Q2 tornado yet, no reset.
  • Level 6: Fate Sealed (R) unlocks. If your jungler has any knock-up (Vi Q, Sejuani Q, Nautilus R), Yone's mid-game roams turn into guaranteed kills bot side.
  • Immortal Shieldbow Immortal Shieldbow completion (~ minute 12-14): Lane phase flips. The HP-threshold shield (the passive that triggers when you drop low) plus the Spirit Cleave shield gives you two layered shields per fight, letting you commit to all-ins that would have killed you before. Roam side lanes the moment the wave is shoved.
  • Infinity Edge Infinity Edge online (~ minute 22-26): You hit the crit cap and your auto-attacks delete squishies in 2-3 hits. Force objective fights and look for R angles that pull 2+ enemies — a 1-target R is a wasted ultimate at this point.

Common mistakes

  • Burning E offensively pre-6 in a losing matchup. Without R you have no follow-up burst, and Soul Unbound has a 22s cooldown at rank 1. If the spirit returns you into the enemy stun, you eat full damage with no reset. Use E defensively instead.
  • Stacking crit chance past Infinity Edge. Yone's passive doubles crit chance from items (the "crit cap" — once you hit 100% effective crit, more crit chance is wasted gold). After Shieldbow + IE you are at exactly 100%; the build pivots into raw AD (Bloodthirster) instead of more crit items like Phantom Dancer.
  • Wasting R on a single target. Fate Sealed pulls every enemy in a line cone — its value scales with how many enemies you hit. Casting it on an isolated support is throwing away a 120-second cooldown ultimate at rank 1. Wait for grouped fights, then R the back line through the front line.
  • Ignoring the Q stack timer. Mortal Steel stacks expire after a few seconds. If you Q1 the enemy and then back off without Q2, the stack vanishes and you lose the knock-up. Plan the trade so Q1 and Q2 land in the same window — usually Q1 → E-dash → Q2 tornado.
  • Not punishing return-cooldowns. After your enemy uses their main escape (Zed W, LeBlanc W, Akali W), you have a 10-15 second window where they have no mobility. That is the only window where Yone wins the all-in — recognize it and commit instead of waiting passively.

Advanced tip

Practice the E-into-fight, snap-back-out pattern. Cast Soul Unbound to dash into the enemy back line, throw your Q-stack + W cleave on the carry, then let E expire so the spirit snaps back to your body — which has been safely behind your front line the whole time. The trade-off is mental: most Yone players commit E forward and then panic when the spirit form ends inside the enemy team. Treat Soul Unbound as a damage-window tool, not a gap-closer: the dash out of the fight is the half that keeps you alive. Pair this with Guardian Angel Guardian Angel late game and you become almost impossible to lock down in a single rotation.
