Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet auto-procs on every W hit, adding free poke every 2v2 cooldown. Manaflow Band fixes Q-spam mana at support income, Transcendence gives 10 ability haste and 20% takedown cooldown refunds, Scorch finishes a low-HP support recalling just below death.
Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery solves the early mana problem (support Xerath has no Doran's Ring fallback) and Cosmic Insight gives extra Flash uptime — Flash is your only answer to an engage closing the line because the kit has no innate escape.
Vs heavy hook supports (Blitzcrank, Thresh, Pyke) where surviving the first hook decides the lane, swap Inspiration to Resolve with Bone Plating (reduces back-to-back damage from the hook combo) and Revitalize (boosts the Mikael's Blessing shield value when you build it second).
Win Condition
Out-range every standard bot lane: poke the enemy AD carry from outside their auto-attack range with Q every cooldown, land the W → E stun setup at level 3+, and convert global pressure into objective kills with R.
Weakness
Zero dash, no shield, no heal, no peel for the ADC. R roots Xerath in place during the channel. Any hard-engage support (Leona, Nautilus) past minion line deletes him before the ADC can react.
Overview
Xerath support is the most extreme poke-mage support in the game. He brings none of the traditional support tools — no shield, heal, peel, or tanky engage. What he brings is a screen-wide kill threat from level 1. Every spell either fires from outside the enemy bot lane's effective range or sets up the next spell that does. Q (Arcanopulse) charges to a huge linear distance, W (Eye of Destruction) drops a delayed AOE with a stronger inner circle that slows hard, and E (Shocking Orb) stuns longer the further it travels — max-range E is a multi-second lock on the enemy ADC. The lane plan: poke with Q from behind your minion wall (the row of minions blocking skillshots), drop W on the ADC's farming spot, E the slowed target, and your ADC walks up for the kill.
The cost is fragility. Xerath has zero mobility — no dash, no blink, no shield, no heal — and his ultimate roots him for the entire channel. He cannot peel an engage off the carry; he can only kill the engager faster than the engager kills the carry. The pick is binary: either you control lane through pure range and snowball (an early lead that grows: kill → gold → item → more kills), or a single Leona engage past minute 3 hands the lane to the enemy. The W → E kill setup and the R cross-map finisher are the two windows you must execute correctly.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
World Atlas + 2
Health Potions. World Atlas is the support starter, the same one every support buys, and it earns gold whenever you damage an enemy champion while an ally is nearby — which Xerath does on every Q-W in lane. It becomes Runic Compass, then Bounty of Worlds once the quest completes, and only at that last step do you pick your upgrade: Bloodsong is one of five options, and it is the one this build takes.
Core items (in order):
Bloodsong — the support quest reward. Mandatory for the income: 9 gold every 10 seconds, 200 health, 75% base health and mana regen, and four ward charges. It carries no ability power at all. Its Spellblade passive needs a basic attack to land after an ability, and Xerath almost never throws one, so treat Bloodsong as your wallet and your vision, not as damage.
Luden's Echo — Xerath's defining damage item. Burst-AOE on next ability cast, plus 100 AP, 600 mana and 10 ability haste — the mana and the haste are what let you hold Q-spam pressure on support income. It carries no magic penetration: that arrives with Shadowflame. The burst proc lets a single Q chunk the entire enemy bot lane if they stand together.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity — ability haste boots, prioritised over Sorcerer's Shoes because as support you cast more abilities and farm zero minions. More R uptime per teamfight is the priority.
Shadowflame — extra burst plus Cinderbloom: against a target below 40% of their maximum health, your magic and true damage critically strike for 120%, a flat +20% on the finisher. The 15 magic penetration in the stat block is unconditional and works from the moment you buy it. Lines up with R finishers cross-map.
Situational items:
Mikael's Blessing — into hard CC threats on your ADC (Leona stun chain, Morgana Q, Pyke hook). Cleansing the CC on your carry is the closest thing Xerath has to peel — buy it before any other defensive option when the enemy support is engage-locked.
Zhonya's Hourglass — into assassin junglers that gank bot (Zed roams, Kha'Zix, Talon, Rengar). Stasis is the only answer Xerath has when a dash chain reaches him during R channel; pre-aim Flash + Zhonya's so neither is wasted.
Morellonomicon — into heal-stacking comps (Soraka mid, Vladimir, enemy team with Aatrox or Dr. Mundo). Grievous Wounds passive cuts their healing by 40%.
Void Staff — the moment any priority target finishes their first magic resist item. Stops one finished Magic Resist item from soft-countering your build.
Boots:
Ionian Boots of Lucidity is default for the ability haste. Swap to
Mercury's Treads if the enemy team has 3+ hard CC threats with magic damage (Lissandra mid + Leona support + Vex top, for example).
Skill order: Max Q first (your main poke, lowest cooldown scaling), W second (more damage and slow on the AOE setup), E last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, and 16.
Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Xerath beats
Squishy enchanter with no engage
Yuumi has no body while detached from her ADC, and You and Me! W only works on an ally. Charged Arcanopulse out-ranges her Prowling Projectile poke, and the moment she detaches to last-hit she gets caught by W into E stun before Zoomies E speed boost can save her.
YuumiSquishy enchanter with no engage
Lulu has zero dashes or blinks. Whimsy W and Help, Pix! E are single-target ally tools, and Glitterlance Q has short range. Charged Arcanopulse out-ranges her entire poke kit and a long-travel Shocking Orb stun sets up the kill on her ADC.
LuluLong-range ADC paired with squishy support
Senna lives at max attack range to stack souls, sitting in exactly the lane spot where charged Arcanopulse and Rite of the Arcane track her. Piercing Darkness Q offers zero displacement to dodge, and Curse of the Black Mist only camouflages her at melee range to an ally.
SennaLong-range ADC paired with squishy support
Ezreal sits at max Mystic Shot range to poke, but that range is shorter than charged Arcanopulse, so Xerath out-trades him every cooldown. Arcane Shift E is a short-cooldown blink for one cast but cannot escape four to six artillery shots in sequence from Rite of the Arcane.
Ezreal
Champions that beat Xerath
Hard-engage tank support
Zenith Blade E is a long-range dash to the furthest enemy in a line, closing the gap inside Shocking Orb's minimum-stun window. Shield of Daybreak Q and Solar Flare R chain stuns lock Xerath in place during his Rite of the Arcane channel for a free kill.
LeonaHard-engage tank support
Dredge Line Q is a long hook that pulls Xerath out of his backline position and triggers the passive root on the first auto. Riptide E adds AOE slow on Xerath's wave, and Depth Charge R tracks him down for a guaranteed knock-up plus stun chain.
NautilusHard-engage tank support
Ferromancy Crash Down W is a 450-range leap with knock-up on impact, landing inside Shocking Orb's minimum-stun range. Shattering Strike Q stuns and destroys shields on the all-in, and Magnet Storm R drags Xerath into the kill if he is still channeling.
RellMobile engage support with dashes
Grand Entrance W is a long-range dash with knock-up on landing, bypassing Xerath's Eye of Destruction slow without taking the stun. Battle Dance E lets Rakan dash twice with W up, and The Quickness R closes any remaining distance to interrupt Rite of the Arcane.
RakanMobile engage support with dashes
Phantom Undertow E is a blink that returns to a placed shadow, dodging any orb mid-flight. Bone Skewer Q hooks from 1100 units once charged, and Death From Below R execute resets on assist, snowballing every kill out of Xerath's lane with no peel.
Pyke
Key matchups
- Leona / Nautilus / Rell: Hard-engage tank supports. Stand outside their flash-engage range until you have
Mikael's Blessing. Pre-place E behind your ADC pointing toward the enemy support's likely walk path — the orb needs to be in flight, not just queued, when they engage so the long-travel stun fires. Patch 26.17 took Xerath's base health to 575 from 596, 21 fewer HP at every level with the growth left alone, and in a 2v2 that is the margin you were surviving on: Zenith Blade (E) already reaches you through the minion line and Shield of Daybreak (Q) lands the moment Leona arrives, so stand a full screen behind your ADC until the cleanse is in your inventory. - Blitzcrank / Thresh / Pyke: Hookers. Stand behind a minion at all times — their hook is a single-target skillshot that the minion wave blocks. Punish missed hooks with Q for free poke; never auto-attack out of cover when they have hook up.
- Yuumi: Free lane. Yuumi has no body when she is not attached to her ADC. Time W to land the second she detaches to last-hit or proc her empowered auto — one detached Yuumi caught by W → E is a kill before her carry can shield her.
- Soraka: Out-pressure her until every heal hurts. Astral Infusion (W) costs her 10% of her maximum health on top of the mana, and the discount only exists while she is under her own Starcall (Q) Rejuvenation, where the cost falls to nothing at rank 5. Rejuvenation only triggers when Starcall hits a champion, so side-step it: a Soraka who cannot land Q on you or your ADC pays full health for every heal, and your Q poke outlasts her.
- Rakan: Mobile engage with Grand Entrance dash. He dashes through your E without taking the stun, then knocks up your ADC. Save E for after he commits the dash, not before. If he saves his dash for disengage, Q spam wins the lane on attrition alone — he has no shield to counter-poke with.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3 (Q-W-E): First spike. With one point in each ability, the full W → E (stun) → Q poke combo is online. Push the wave to hit level 3 before the enemy support and force a 2v2 trade. Patch 26.17 shaved 5 flat damage off Arcanopulse at every rank (75 ⇒ 70 at rank 1, the +90% AP ratio untouched), a rounding error next to what the full W → E → Q combo deals at level 3: the trade is worth what it was in 26.16. What did change is your own margin, 21 fewer base HP at every level. Land the W slow first and let your ADC take the free auto-attacks the stun buys.
- Level 6 (R unlocked): First Rite of the Arcane is up. Ping your jungler for a gank — Xerath's four artillery shots at rank 1 into a dive can solo-kill the enemy bot lane if they have not warded the river.
Luden's Echo +
Bloodsong online (~ minute 13-15): Damage flips, and the whole jump is Luden's Echo — Bloodsong is what paid for it, not what adds to it. From here you out-damage every enchanter support 2v2 and the burst proc threatens the kill on a half-HP ADC every Q cast. Force grouped fights at drake.
Shadowflame online (~ minute 22-26): Full R rotation deletes any squishy that has not built MR. This is when Xerath wins teamfights from across the map — pick angles where the enemy carry is between you and the next objective.
Common mistakes
- Taking last-hits in lane. As support, you do not take last-hits — the gold from your AD carry's farm is what funds the lane. Stand back, poke with Q, and only auto-attack a minion if your carry is dead, recalling, or already past the next item spike.
- Throwing E for naked poke. E has a long cast time and a slow travel — a close-range cast barely stuns (under half a second) and gives nothing to your AD carry. Lead with W to slow first, then E along the slow zone where the enemy can't side-step.
- Standing in front of your ADC. Xerath has no peel for himself or anyone else. If you stand in front, the engage hits you, you die, your ADC has no support. Stand one step behind or to the side of the ADC, with a minion between you and any hook angle.
- Channeling R in the open. Rite of the Arcane roots Xerath for the full channel. If you start it inside river or in lane brush with no team between you and the enemy, every assassin in the game prays for that moment. Channel from behind tower, behind a wall, or with
Zhonya's Hourglass held in reserve. - Wasting R on full-HP grouped enemies. R does most of its damage as the finisher on low-HP targets, not as the opener into a 5-man team. Six shots at rank 3 into a tank's full HP bar is wasted potential; the same six into a 30%-HP enemy ADC across the map is a kill.
Advanced tip
Practice the arc-into-minion-wall E. Shocking Orb travels a long straight line, passes through brush, stops at the first champion hit — but does NOT stop on minions. When the enemy support and ADC sit with a minion or two between you and them, E fired through the wave hits the champion behind, with the orb traveling long enough for a multi-second stun. Pre-aim so your ADC walks up the exact second the stun lands. The same trick works inside fog of war (the dark zones on the minimap with no vision): an E fired into the river brush stuns whoever is hiding at the orb's far edge. This single skill turns the lane into a 2v1.
