Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet procs off your W, adding burst to the poke. Manaflow Band stacks while you Q-spam, Transcendence adds 10 ability haste by level 8 (more Q per minute), Scorch finishes low-HP laners that recall just below death.
Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery fixes the early mana floor while you stack Manaflow, and Cosmic Insight gives extra Flash uptime — Flash is your only answer to a dash crossing minion range because Xerath has zero innate mobility.
Vs heavy assassin double-pick (e.g. Zed mid + Kha'Zix jungle), swap Inspiration to Resolve with Bone Plating (reduces back-to-back damage from a gap-close combo) and Revitalize (boosts team shielding), buying you seconds to fire R safely.
Win Condition
Win lane on pure range: shove waves with Q-W, then poke from outside the enemy laner's effective range until they have to back. Convert poke leads into objective control with R cross-map finishes on low-HP enemies.
Weakness
Zero dash, no escape, R channel roots you in place. Any mobile threat that crosses your frontline (tanks/bruisers up front) deletes you before you can react. Flash + Zhonya's are mandatory.
Overview
Xerath is an AP artillery mage — the longest-range caster in the game. His entire identity is "fire spells from a screen away and never be where the enemy can reach you." Every ability either covers the gap between him and the target or punishes the target for trying to close it. Q (Arcanopulse) charges up to a huge linear range that out-distances every farming pattern in mid lane. W (Eye of Destruction) drops a delayed area-of-effect zone with a stronger inner circle, the slow that holds enemies still for the rest of the combo. E (Shocking Orb) is a long, slow line skillshot that stuns based on how far it travelled — the further away you cast it, the longer the stun. R (Rite of the Arcane) is the global finisher: Xerath channels in place for up to 10 seconds and fires four artillery shots at rank 1, five at rank 2 and six at rank 3, from anywhere on the map.
His mid game plan: shove with Q-W to deny farm, then poke from outside the enemy's effective range every cooldown. Post-6 he becomes map presence — if a bot or top laner survives at 20% HP, your R lands across the map for the cleanup. The cost is fragility: no dash, no shield, no heal, and R roots him for the entire channel. Sit behind the wave, keep Flash up against assassins, and treat
Zhonya's Hourglass as a build commitment, not a luxury.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Doran's Ring + 2
Health Potions. Doran's Ring stabilises mana for Q spam and adds AP — flat damage matters less than scaling for an artillery mage.
Core items (in order):
Luden's Echo — Xerath's defining first item. Burst-AOE on every damaging ability, plus 100 AP, 600 mana and 10 ability haste — the mana and the haste are what let Xerath hold Q-spam priority from minute 11. It carries no magic penetration: that comes later, from Sorcerer's Shoes and Shadowflame. The burst proc lets your Q one-shot a low-HP minion wave, freeing Xerath to poke instead of last-hit.
Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration aimed at the squishy backline you want R to finish.
Shadowflame — extra burst plus Cinderbloom: against a target below 40% of their maximum health, your magic and true damage critically strike for 120%, a flat +20% on the finisher. The 15 magic penetration in the stat block is unconditional and works from the moment you buy it. Lines up perfectly with R finishers cross-map.
Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game scaling multiplier: 130 AP in the slot, then Magical Opus raises your total ability power by 30%, the AP you already had included. Buy it third or fourth depending on whether the enemy team has already started stacking magic resist.
Situational items:
Zhonya's Hourglass — into divers and assassins (Zed, Akali, Diana, Fizz). The 2.5-second stasis covers the exact window when your R channel finishes and you are still rooted to the ground; it also baits out the assassin's full burst on an invulnerable body. After the Patch 26.17 health cut this is not a fourth-item luxury any more: against a diver or an assassin, buy it straight after
Luden's Echo.
Banshee's Veil — into telegraphed magic CC (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate gold card). The shield blocks the engage spell that would lock you for the entire fight.
Morellonomicon — into heal-stacking comps (Soraka mid, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo, Aatrox top). The Grievous Wounds passive cuts their healing by 40% so your damage actually translates into kills.
Void Staff — the moment any priority target finishes their first magic resist item. Stops one finished Magic Resist item from soft-countering your whole build.
Boots:
Sorcerer's Shoes is default.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity are acceptable if your team needs extra R uptime to chain global pressure on objective spawns.
Skill order: Max Q first (your main poke, lowest cooldown scaling), W second (more damage and slow on the AOE setup), E last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, and 16.
Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Xerath beats
Stationary mage with no dash
Karthus must step up to land Lay Waste rings on minions, but charged Arcanopulse out-ranges that approach window. Xerath chunks him from screen distance on every CS attempt, and Wall of Pain offers zero defensive utility against artillery from outside Karthus's poke range.
KarthusStationary mage with no dash
Veigar must walk forward to last-hit with Baleful Strike for his stack scaling, but charged Arcanopulse out-ranges that step-up window. Event Horizon cage only matters if Veigar gets close enough to set it, which he never does against max-range Q poke pre-6.
VeigarStationary mage with no dash
Anivia has no mobility outside Crystallize wall placement and must stand still inside Glacial Storm to deal damage. Charged Arcanopulse and W setup chunk her on every farm attempt, and Frostbite mid range cannot threaten Xerath sitting behind his caster wave.
AniviaStationary mage with no dash
Ryze relies on Overload poke from inside short Spell Flux range, forcing him into Xerath's max-charge Arcanopulse window every cooldown. Rune Prison root only reaches 615 units; Xerath never enters that range and chunks Ryze every step-up on the wave.
RyzeGroup-engage tank without a dash
After Malphite commits Unstoppable Force R into the backline he has zero follow-up mobility and Granite Shield is broken. Xerath's W slows him in place mid-engage and Eye of Destruction center-hit plus charged Arcanopulse chunks his HP bar fast.
Malphite
Champions that beat Xerath
Mobile assassin with multiple gap-closers
Living Shadow swap closes half the lane in a single button while Razor Shuriken pokes Xerath through minions. When Death Mark R lands during Rite of the Arcane channel, Xerath is rooted with no Shocking Orb angle and no Flash up to break the mark before it detonates.
ZedMobile assassin with multiple gap-closers
Shuriken Flip E dashes Akali directly onto a marked target, bypassing Shocking Orb line entirely. Twilight Shroud W gives invisibility to escape the W slow zone, and Perfect Execution R chains two dashes onto the channel-bound Xerath before artillery finishes firing.
AkaliMobile assassin with multiple gap-closers
Playful / Trickster E makes Fizz untargetable mid-flight, dodging Shocking Orb stun and the inner Eye of Destruction circle on reflex. Urchin Strike closes the remaining distance, and Chum the Waters lands a guaranteed shark engage even mid Rite of the Arcane.
FizzWindwall champion with sustained mobility
Wind Wall W blocks both Arcanopulse and Shocking Orb on demand, removing Xerath's entire poke and self-peel package in a single cooldown. Sweeping Blade E lets Yasuo dash through the minion wave onto Xerath, and Last Breath locks the channel-bound mage.
YasuoMelee skirmisher with a shield and a spirit dash
Spirit Cleave W shields Yone through Arcanopulse chip, and Soul Unbound E sends his spirit through Eye of Destruction's slow window with no penalty. Fate Sealed R pulls Xerath out of Rite of the Arcane, cancelling the artillery shots.

Key matchups
- Veigar: Stationary mage you out-range pre-6. Push him under tower with Q, charge Q from max range every time he steps up to last-hit, and recall before he hits level 6 — his cage threshold is the only moment the matchup flips. Buy
Banshee's Veil if he survives lane. - Zed: Diving threat with multiple gap-closers (a "gap-closer" is any dash, blink, or jump that crosses ground fast). Buy
Zhonya's Hourglass as your second item after
Luden's Echo. Never start an R channel when Zed has Living Shadow up — wait for him to commit it, then channel from safety. Pre-place E on his minimum-distance dash arc so the stun fires when he lands. Since 26.17 your health pool is 21 points smaller at every level, and Zed does not need much of an opening: Living Shadow (W) crosses half the lane in one button and Razor Shuriken (Q) lands through the wave, so channel R only once the shadow is already spent. - Anivia: She out-scales but only if you let her farm safely. Push the wave constantly so her wall (a "wall" here is the Crystallize spell that splits the lane) keeps splitting your minions, not yours — and so she misses CS under tower. Roam to side lanes the moment your R comes up; Anivia has zero mobility to follow.
- Ahri: Range war but with charm. Save E for after she throws her Charm so the orb traveled long enough to land the full stun. Buy
Banshee's Veil after
Luden's Echo so her charm cannot disable your R channel. - Yasuo: Wind Wall blocks both Q and E. Force him to wall an early Q-W poke, then commit the E stun on the cooldown window. Never start R channel while Wind Wall is up; it eats the first artillery shot. Treat this lane as "survive to teamfight" — your team's frontline pins him while you fire from behind.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3 (Q-W-E): First spike. With one point in each ability, the full W → E (stun) → Q poke combo is online. This window is when you push for first poke advantage.
- Level 6 (R unlocked): First Rite of the Arcane is up. Look for a cross-map kill on a low-HP bot or top laner — four artillery shots at rank 1 into a recall window or a botched gank turn into a free shutdown bounty. Patch 26.17 is why this window is the play and the in-lane solo kill is not: base health dropped to 575 from 596 (21 fewer HP at every level, the per-level growth untouched), while Arcanopulse only lost 5 flat damage at every rank (75 ⇒ 70 at rank 1, the +90% AP ratio untouched). Your poke is worth what it was; your margin for error is not. Fire R at someone another lane has already opened up.
Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 11-13): Wave control flips ("wave control" is who decides where the minion wave fights, you or the enemy laner). The burst proc lets a single Q clear the caster minions and chunk the enemy laner in the same cast. From here you should be the one shoving and pressuring.
Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 25-28): Full R rotation deletes squishies without magic resist. Force grouped objective fights here — Baron, Soul Drake, Elder.
Common mistakes
- Channeling Q without a W setup. Q is a slow projectile with a clear visual tell ("tell" = a visible warning the spell is starting): any half-attentive laner side-steps the raw cast. Drop W first so the enemy is slowed in place; or charge Q while they are last-hitting a frontline minion. Never fire a fully-charged Q on prediction alone.
- Standing still during R. Rite of the Arcane roots Xerath for the full channel. If you start it in the open with no team between you and the enemy, every assassin in the game prays for that moment. Channel from behind your frontline, behind a wall, or with
Zhonya's Hourglass held in reserve. - Wasting R on full-HP grouped enemies. R does most of its damage as the finisher on low-HP targets cross-map, not as the opener into a 5-man team. Six shots at rank 3 into a tank's HP bar is wasted potential; the same six into a Caitlyn at 30% across the map is a kill.
- Spamming E on cooldown. Shocking Orb's stun duration scales with travel distance. A close-range E barely stuns, while a max-range E locks the target long enough for a full Q + W combo. Save E for the long-distance angle, not for the reflex panic-button.
- Pushing without vision. Xerath has no escape — no dash, no blink, no shield. Pushing past the river without a ward in the enemy jungle is the single fastest way to feed an early gank. Place a Stealth Ward or Control Ward in tri-bush before every shove.
Advanced tip
Practice the shoot-around-the-wall E setup. Shocking Orb travels in a straight line and passes through brush and walls until it hits a target. When the enemy laner recalls into lane brush, mentally trace a line from your champion through the wall to where they will walk — then fire E along that line a fraction of a second before they reach the spot. Because the orb has traveled the long edge of its range, the stun is multi-second. Chain a max-charge Q along the same axis. A practiced Xerath turns this into a free 100-to-0 burst on a target who never saw the spell coming.
