Precision: Lethal Tempo stacks 4% attack speed per hit in extended trades — exactly when Xayah lands W-empowered Clean Cuts autos and drops Feathers. Triumph refunds HP on takedowns, Legend: Alacrity stacks more attack speed, Coup de Grace boosts damage below 40% HP.
Domination secondary: Taste of Blood gives small lane sustain on Q poke, and Ultimate Hunter cuts Featherstorm cooldown so you have your engage-dodge tool up more often in mid- and late-game fights.
Against poke-heavy laners (Caitlyn, Jhin, Varus) swap Domination → Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery (free potions and mana) + Cosmic Insight (lower summoner cooldowns). You trade R uptime for the sustain you need to reach Yun Tal Wildarrows alive.
Win Condition
Drop Feathers with Q and pierce-autos, group them on the enemy ADC and support, then E for a multi-Feather root and W-empowered burst. Use R to dodge engage and follow up with a recalled Feather wall.
Weakness
Short auto-attack range (525) and no dash. Long-range marksmen out-poke her in lane, mobile assassins close on her between Featherstorm uses, and a missed Bladecaller leaves her with no peel for the next 8-10 seconds.
Overview
Xayah is a marksman built around two interlocking gimmicks: every cast leaves Feathers on the ground, and her Bladecaller (E) pulls all of them back through enemies in straight lines, rooting any champion clipped by three or more. That single mechanic gives her a self-peel root, an AOE damage burst, and a setup tool for her support's follow-up CC, all on one button. The price for that toolkit is short auto-attack range (525, the shortest in the marksman class alongside Jinx) and zero dash.
The game plan is to drop Feathers with Double Daggers (Q) and pierce-autos from Clean Cuts (P), line them up behind the enemy ADC or support so the recall passes through both of them, then press E for the multi-Feather root and a W-empowered all-in. Featherstorm (R) is the safety valve: it makes Xayah untargetable for the cast, dodges hooks and knock-ups, and lays down a fresh wall of Feathers to recall the moment she lands. Skill expression sits in Feather placement (the line where you drop them decides which enemies the recall hits) and in R timing against incoming CC.
Recommended Build
Starting items: Doran's Blade + 1 Health Potion (450 + 50 = the full 500 gold you start with). Skip the second Doran's even if you're winning lane — the gold goes much further into the Cloak of Agility component for Yun Tal Wildarrows.
Core items (in order):
Yun Tal Wildarrows — first-item crit rush, and a cheaper one since 26.15: 3000 gold instead of 3100, with 45% attack speed instead of 40%. It starts at 0% crit and builds it up: Practice Makes Lethal grants permanent critical strike chance on every attack, up to 25%, and every Clean Cuts pierce auto that hits several targets feeds it, so it fills fastest on Xayah.
Berserker's Greaves — attack speed boots, now 30% attack speed instead of 25%. Buy after Yun Tal in most games; rush them earlier if you need the move speed to dodge skillshots.
Infinity Edge — your biggest damage spike. Crit damage doubles every Clean Cuts pierce auto and every Bladecaller Feather, which is the breakpoint where Xayah flips from "annoying" to "deletes the back line".
Runaan's Hurricane — hypercarry teamfight item, now with 5% move speed instead of 4%. The extra bolts also drop Feathers, so a single auto on the front-line tank now plants Feathers on three different lanes — Bladecaller recalls through all of them for a multi-target root.
Situational items:
Lord Dominik's Regards — against tanky front lines or HP-stacking comps (Sion, Cho'Gath, Dr. Mundo). Replace Runaan's if the enemy team has 3+ tanks.
Mortal Reminder — against heavy healing comps (Soraka, Vladimir, Aatrox). Applies Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts healing) the moment your Feathers tag them.
Phantom Dancer — against assassin pressure (Zed, Samira, Yasuo flank). Spectral Waltz makes you Ghosted (you walk through other units instead of being blocked by them) and the 10% move speed gives the half-second you need to press R.
Mercurial Scimitar — against lock-down ults (Malzahar R, Skarner R, Warwick R). The active (Quicksilver) cleanses suppression and hard CC: press it the moment they land their ult, then R or E out.
Boots:
Berserker's Greaves is default. Mercury's Treads only against 3+ hard CC threats stacked on the enemy team.
Skill order: Max Q first (Feather generation and poke damage), W second (attack speed and trade damage), E last (root duration is fixed; only damage scales). Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Precision with Lethal Tempo, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Coup de Grace. Secondary Domination with Taste of Blood (lane sustain) and Ultimate Hunter (lower R cooldown). Stat shards: Attack Speed / Adaptive Force / Health.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Xayah beats
Lock-down engage support with solar stun
Xayah Featherstorm (R) goes untargetable for the cast, so Leona Solar Flare (R) stun and Zenith Blade (E) dash both pass through her without landing. Bladecaller (E) then roots the rest of the enemy team with the recalled Feathers for the ally support follow-up CC chain.
LeonaLock-down engage support with knock-up
Xayah Featherstorm (R) goes untargetable for the cast, so Nautilus Depth Charge (R) knock-up and Dredge Line (Q) hook both pass through her without landing. Bladecaller (E) then roots the rest of the enemy team with recalled Feathers for the ally support follow-up CC chain.
NautilusLock-down engage support with magnet ult
Xayah Featherstorm (R) goes untargetable for the cast, so Rell Ferromancy Crash Down (W) knock-up and Magnet Storm (R) pull both pass through her without landing. Bladecaller (E) then roots the rest of the enemy team with recalled Feathers for the ally support follow-up.
RellHook support with point-and-click projectile
Featherstorm (R) makes Xayah untargetable mid-cast, so Blitzcrank Rocket Grab (Q) phases through her if she presses R before the projectile connects. She keeps farming behind dropped Feathers and Bladecaller (E) roots him through Power Fist (E) knock-up follow-up window.
BlitzcrankHook support with flay and lantern
Featherstorm (R) makes Xayah untargetable mid-cast, so Thresh Death Sentence (Q) hook phases through her if she presses R before the chain connects. She keeps farming behind dropped Feathers and Bladecaller (E) roots him through Flay (E) displacement follow-up.
Thresh
Champions that beat Xayah
Long-range laning marksman with traps
Caitlyn's 650 auto range and Piltover Peacemaker (Q) beat Xayah's 525, and Headshot punishes every step forward, so she pokes Xayah off the wave before she can stack three Feathers on the carry for the Bladecaller (E) root setup.
CaitlynLong-range laning marksman with crit passive
Jhin Whisper passive guaranteed crit on the fourth shot and Dancing Grenade (Q) bounce out-range Xayah Double Daggers (Q) 525 auto window. She gets poked off the wave before she can stack three Feathers on the carry and Curtain Call (R) snipes her from across the screen.
JhinEarly-pressure marksman with auto reset
Draven Spinning Axe (Q) plus League of Draven passive gold-stack auto damage out-trades Xayah Double Daggers (Q) in level 1-5 short windows. Blood Rush (W) refreshes on every axe caught and kites the Bladecaller (E) recall; Whirling Death (R) finishes her at low HP from far away.
DravenEarly-pressure mobile marksman with dash
Lucian Lightslinger passive double-shot plus Piercing Light (Q) burst chunks Xayah inside her 525 auto range during level 1-5 trades. Relentless Pursuit (E) dash closes inside her Feather setup before she can recall them with Bladecaller (E) for the root.
LucianMobile AD assassin with shadow swap
Zed Living Shadow (W) swap plus Death Mark (R) places the marker on Xayah while she is not in Featherstorm (R) untargetable window, and Razor Shuriken (Q) plus Shadow Slash (E) shred her HP. Contempt for the Weak passive bonus damage punishes her low HP pool.
Zed
Key matchups
- Caitlyn: Unfavored. She outranges your auto-attacks by 125 units and her Headshot passive chunks you from outside Feather placement range. Stand behind minions, don't step on bushes she has been sitting in (likely traps from her W), and stack Q poke from max range. Survive to
Yun Tal Wildarrows — her teamfight scaling falls off hard against your AOE Feather recall. - Draven: Heavily Xayah-unfavored levels 1-5. His Spinning Axe out-trades your Double Daggers at every step. Don't fight him pre-3; freeze the wave near your turret, set up Feathers behind minions for an escape root, and look for jungle dives only when he overextends.
- Lucian: Unfavored. His level 3 all-in (passive double-shot + Relentless Pursuit dash + W speed-up) beats yours. Hold E as a self-peel against his dash; never throw it as poke. Get to
Yun Tal Wildarrows without dying and the lane stabilizes. - Jhin: Unfavored in lane, even-leaning-favored after two items. His Whisper passive outranges your auto and his Q bounce chips through minions. Dodge Dancing Grenade angles (don't stand on top of your support), use R to dodge Curtain Call (his R) when he locks you in, and outscale into the teamfight phase.
- Leona: Favored matchup if you respect level 1-2. Her engage chain is Zenith Blade dash → Shield of Daybreak stun, and she has no escape after committing. Press R the instant you see her dash animation: you go untargetable, her stun whiffs, then drop Q + E for a root on her in the open. After level 6 you punish every Solar Flare she throws by timing R on top of it.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2: Picking up W (Deadly Plumage) unlocks your first real all-in window. Q-AA-W-AA on the enemy ADC with a Feather already on the ground is a free 30-40% HP chunk if you Bladecaller after — fight only if your support has a follow-up.
- Level 6: First Featherstorm. You now have a guaranteed engage-dodge, though only every 140 seconds at rank 1, dropping to 100 at rank 3. Look for trades the moment R comes off cooldown; if the enemy support burned their engage to bait it, you're free to all-in.
Yun Tal Wildarrows completion (~ minute 11-13): First real spike, and the 100 gold Riot shaved off the item usually buys it a wave earlier. The 45% attack speed speeds up Feather generation, and once Practice Makes Lethal has stacked its 25% crit chance the Bladecaller recall starts one-shotting squishy supports.
Infinity Edge online (~ minute 22-26): The carry breakpoint. Crit Bladecaller deletes back-line targets caught by a multi-Feather recall, and Featherstorm cooldown is short enough (with Ultimate Hunter) that you have an engage-dodge for every teamfight.
Common mistakes
- Pressing E with one or two Feathers on the ground. Bladecaller only roots an enemy hit by 3+ Feathers in the same recall. With fewer Feathers it's still damage, but you lose the lockdown that lets your team commit. Wait for at least one Q + two Clean Cuts pierce autos before recalling.
- Burning R for damage. Featherstorm is first and foremost a defensive tool — the untargetable window dodges hooks, suppressions and knock-up ults. Spending it on poke or as a clean-up means you have nothing left when Blitzcrank's hook lands or Malzahar opens with his R.
- Standing at max attack range in teamfights. Xayah has no dash. Maximum auto range puts you outside your team's peel (protection — your support's CC and shields). Stand at the second-furthest position so a flanking assassin can't delete you before R comes up.
- Dropping Feathers in a useless line. If your Q lands behind a tank, the Bladecaller recall pulls Feathers through the tank — but the squishies you actually want to root are off the line. Aim Q so that the line from the Feather back to your position passes through the targets you want to hit, not the wall of HP in front of them.
- Lining up the duo R with no setup. Xayah and Rakan share a unique R interaction (your R can pair with his to chain CC and dash), but it doesn't auto-win the fight. If your team has not committed before he engages, the duo R lands two of you 1v5 inside the enemy back line. Coordinate the timing on voice or in chat, never solo-press it on cooldown.
Advanced tip
The combo that decides fights is R before E, never after. Bladecaller calls back the Feathers that are on the ground when you press it: anything that lands afterwards is not part of that recall. Featherstorm leaves a whole line of fresh Feathers under the enemy team while you spend 1.5 seconds untargetable and Ghosted, so the correct order is R to dodge the engage and carpet the ground, then E the instant you touch down, with the enemies still standing on the new line. Pressing E first spends your Feathers on a single recall and leaves you with nothing to call back when R lands. Practice the landing timing in a custom: the enemies have to still be inside the Feather line when you press E, and reading that half-second is the single biggest skill jump for a Xayah main.
