Crimson Pact
Every 30 bonus Health gives 1 Ability Power; every 1 AP gives 1.6 bonus Health. Stack HP items and AP at the same time.
Transfusion

Sanguine Pool
Sanguine Pool
Vladimir becomes untargetable for 2s and slows enemies above. Costs current HP. Use to dodge skillshots and survive burst, not for damage.
Tides of Blood
Tides of Blood
Channel-charged AOE around Vladimir, costs HP to charge. Main waveclear and trade tool — release at max stack for full damage.

Why these runes

Sorcery primary: Stormraider's Surge triggers from Q + E + AA in 3 seconds and grants movement speed to disengage after every trade. Axiom Arcanist adds 8% to Hemoplague's area damage; Transcendence keeps Q cooldowns short; Scorch finishes low-HP enemies in lane.

Why secondary

Resolve secondary: Second Wind regenerates HP after the enemy laner pokes you (Vladimir's E and Hemoplague cost HP, so you start the trade injured); Revitalize amplifies your Crimson Rush Q healing and the R team heal.

When to switch secondary

If the enemy team has 2+ AP threats (double mage comps), swap Resolve to Sorcery extra slots or Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free Boots) and Cosmic Insight (more Flash and item CDR), accepting less sustain for more lane safety.

Win Condition

Stack Health and Ability Power together so Crimson Pact doubles your scaling, then 3-shot the enemy back line at level 11 with R + E + Q while Sanguine Pool eats the follow-up burst.

Weakness

Mana-less but HP-costed kit makes you weak in extended early game. No hard CC, no dash; if you cannot kite, divers reach you between W cooldowns and delete you before scaling.

Overview

Vladimir is a magic-damage drain tank: his Crimson Pact (P) turns Health into Ability Power and AP back into Health, so every item he buys scales both his damage and his survivability at the same time. He has no mana — every spell is paid in HP — so his weakness is the early game, where he must survive lane without trading too aggressively. His win condition is to reach level 11 with two AP items, sink into Sanguine Pool (W) to dodge the enemy engage (the moment a tank or assassin commits to start a fight on you), then Hemoplague (R) the entire back line and one-shot them while the 10% damage amp is active.

His game plan in mid: farm safely with Tides of Blood (E) until level 6, walk into side lanes once you have Hemoplague, and look for picks (eliminating an isolated enemy out of the team fight) whenever your Crimson Rush charge is full — the empowered Transfusion (Q) hits like a third item early. Skill expression sits in W timing (dodge a specific skillshot, not panic-press) and in R positioning (cast it on the enemy carry the moment your team is also in range).

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potions. Doran's Ring is unusual for a mana-less champion, but the AP, the bonus Health, and the small HP regen carry the lane perfectly into Vladimir's HP-costed kit.

Core items (in order):

  1. Liandry's Torment Liandry's Torment — first item spike. Adds 300 Health plus burn damage spread over 3 seconds, which fits Vladimir's repeated E casts in a team fight.
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration, ideal against the squishy targets you most want to delete.
  3. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game AP multiplier. With Crimson Pact, the extra AP becomes extra Health too, so it doubles as a survivability spike.
  4. Shadowflame Shadowflame — 110 ability power and a flat 15 magic penetration that never changes with the target's health, plus Cinderbloom: your magic and true damage critically strike enemies below 40% health for 20% extra damage, perfectly aligned with Hemoplague finishers.
  5. Void Staff Void Staff — the moment any priority target buys Magic Resist.

Situational items:

  • Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass — into divers and assassins (Zed, Talon, Diana, Akali). Stasis covers the window after your W ends, when you would normally die to the follow-up burst.
  • Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil — into single-target magic CC (Ahri Charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate Gold Card). The spell shield eats the first lock-down so W stays available for the follow-up.
  • Riftmaker Riftmaker — into short-range melee bruisers (Sett, Mordekaiser, Garen). Void Corruption ramps to 8% bonus damage in fights you outlast with W, and grants omnivamp at full stacks.
  • Cosmic Drive Cosmic Drive — into kite comps where you have no front line. Flat Ability Haste and the movement speed proc let you reposition between Q charges.

Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes is default. Take Plated Steelcaps against an AD-heavy enemy team (Zed mid + Yasuo top + Vayne bot) before your second item.

Skill order: Max Q first (main damage and healing), E second (waveclear and trade), W last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Sorcery with Stormraider's Surge, Axiom Arcanist, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Resolve with Second Wind and Revitalize for early sustain plus amplified healing.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Vladimir beats

  • Immobile burst mage with self-egg

Vladimir Sanguine Pool (W) turns untargetable mid-cast and dodges Anivia Glacial Storm (R) tick zone, so he resurfaces inside her front cone where Crimson Pact passive HP-scaled Transfusion (Q) drains her. The Rebirth passive egg dies under Hemoplague (R) amp burst follow-up.

    Anivia
  • Immobile AP scaler with cage stun

Vladimir Sanguine Pool (W) turns untargetable mid-cast and dodges Veigar Event Horizon (E) stun ring on entry, so he resurfaces outside the cage. Crimson Pact passive HP-scaled Transfusion (Q) drains him and Hemoplague (R) damage amp out-trades Baleful Strike (Q) burst combo.

    Veigar
  • Immobile AP mage with delayed Q

Vladimir Sanguine Pool (W) turns untargetable mid-cast and dodges Karthus Lay Waste (Q) burst circle, so he resurfaces where Crimson Pact passive HP-scaled Transfusion (Q) drains him. Hemoplague (R) damage amp out-paces Defile (E) drain and the corpse passive Death Defied window.

    Karthus
  • Short-range melee bruiser with true-damage W

Vladimir Transfusion (Q) hits from 600 range outside Sett Haymaker (W) windup zone, so the trade always favors range. Sanguine Pool (W) untargetable dodges The Show Stopper (R) slam target lock and Hemoplague (R) drain out-sustains Pit Grit passive auto-stack damage.

    Sett
  • Short-range AP bruiser with isolation ultimate

Vladimir Transfusion (Q) hits from 600 range outside Mordekaiser Obliterate (Q) reach, so the trade favors range. Sanguine Pool (W) untargetable dodges Realm of Death (R) lock window, denying his only all-in path and Indestructible (W) shield does not refresh inside the pool.

    Mordekaiser

Champions that beat Vladimir

  • Mobile AD assassin with wall traversal

Talon Rake (W) chips Vlad past his Transfusion (Q) 600 range while he is still on Doran's stacks, and Noxian Diplomacy (Q) gap-close lands before Sanguine Pool (W) recovers.

    Talon
  • Mobile AD assassin with shadow ultimate

Zed Death Mark (R) re-tags Vladimir after Sanguine Pool (W) ends, denying the untargetable escape window entirely. Living Shadow (W) plus Shadow Slash (E) chains before W comes back up and Razor Shuriken (Q) chips him through Crimson Pact HP scaling while he has no early

    Zed
  • Anti-heal poke mages

Cassiopeia's Twin Fang (E) procs every ~1s on Vlad and her Morellonomicon cuts Crimson Rush Q healing by 40%. Vex's Personal Space (W) and Doom 'n Gloom passive tag Vlad the instant he exits Sanguine Pool, removing his only escape.

    Cassiopeia
  • AP control mages with suppress ult

Malzahar is one of Vladimir's worst mid matchups — Call of the Void Q silence interrupts Vlad's E charge and Nether Grasp R suppression locks him without Sanguine Pool escape.

    Malzahar
  • AP-tank anti-mages with damage reduction

Galio counters Vladimir mid — his Shield of Durand W magic damage reduction blunts Vlad's burst and Justice Punch E knock-up lands point-blank to cut the drain Q trade short.

    Galio

Key matchups

  • Anivia: Favourable. Sit at 600 range, poke with Q every cooldown, and use W the moment she casts Glacial Storm (R) — you sink out before her Frostbite (E) detonates. She has no dash to chase the trade.
  • Talon: Hard counter pre-6. Buy Doran's Shield instead of Ring, hug the tower until level 6, and W the moment he uses Shadow Assault (R). Do not contest the wave at half HP — he kills you with one full combo.
  • Cassiopeia: Difficult. Her E spam (Twin Fang) ignores grounded enemies' attempts to dash, and her Noxious Blast (Q) chips you constantly. Buy Doran's Shield, freeze the wave near your tower, and ask for jungle help before you can scale into Riftmaker.
  • Yasuo / Yone: Cast Q from max range so Yasuo's Wind Wall is wasted, never trade E when their Q3 is up. W the dash chain after their Sweeping Blade (E) reset; the untargetable window covers the burst.
  • Twisted Fate: Watch the map for the Destiny (R) global. Push the wave on cooldown so you can rotate before he ults; if he picks the gold card on you, W the lock-down and walk out with Stormraider's Surge active.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3: Q-E-W combo online. You can match short trades, but do not commit — your Crimson Pact scaling has not kicked in yet.
  • Level 6: First Hemoplague (R) unlocks the all-in. With Doran's Ring stacks and full Crimson Rush, the R + E + Q combo deletes ~40% HP from a 1100 HP target.
  • Liandry's Torment Liandry's Torment completion (~ minute 14-16): Burn damage spread over 3 seconds turns every E charge into a sustained DPS source. Shove and roam to side lanes here.
  • Level 11 + 2 items: Hemoplague second rank adds a big chunk of damage, and Rabadon's Deathcap (or Shadowflame second item) pushes your combo into 60% HP one-shot territory on squishies. Force objective fights at this point.

Common mistakes

  • Casting E at full charge every time. Sometimes the level-1 E (a quick partial-charge release) wins the trade because you still have HP to spend on W. Releasing E early at low charge costs less HP and refunds Crimson Rush faster.
  • Saving W as a kill-securing dash. Sanguine Pool is a defensive tool first: use it to dodge a specific skillshot you can predict (Ahri Charm, Veigar Event Horizon stun ring), not as a creative engage. You have no way to escape if W is on cooldown.
  • Hemoplague on a single squishy in lane. Save R for team fights where the 10% damage amplification multiplies across 3+ allies hitting the same target. In lane, the cooldown is too long for the value of one extra combo.
  • Stacking pure AP without HP. Crimson Pact rewards mixed AP + HP itemization. Skipping the Health on Liandry's and Riftmaker and rushing Deathcap second leaves you squishy enough that any diver one-shots you between W cooldowns.
  • Solo-engaging with R at level 6. Your kit has no hard CC (no stun, no root) and no built-in dash. Walk up with allies; R on the enemy back line after your team starts the fight, not before.

Advanced tip

Pre-cast Hemoplague (R) on a wall or terrain edge a heartbeat before walking into the enemy team. The cast finishes while you are still safe, so the 10% damage amp is already ticking when you blink your Flash into the fight and chain E + Q. This buys roughly half a second of free combo time compared to casting R after the engage, which is often the difference between a clean ace and a 4-for-2 trade.
