Why these runes

Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet procs off E or the augmented Q — Viktor's targeted Q makes the Comet hit one of the most reliable in the game. Manaflow Band covers early E spam, Transcendence adds 5 Ability Haste at level 5 and 5 more at level 8, Scorch closes poke at low HP.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery covers Viktor's awful early mana pool while you scale, and Cosmic Insight (item Haste plus summoner Haste — your cooldowns on Flash come back faster) buys extra R uses across a long game.

When to switch secondary

If the enemy team has 2+ low-resistance squishies and no engage that punishes you in lane, swap Inspiration to Domination with Cheap Shot (bonus damage to slowed targets — pairs with your W field) and Ultimate Hunter (more Arcane Storm uses per fight).

Win Condition

Augment all four abilities by mid-game and farm Luden's Echo plus Rabadon's Deathcap. Use W to lock immobile targets, then layer E + R + Q empowered auto for a sustained burst that no squishy survives.

Weakness

No dash and short cast windows. Mobile assassins jump on you inside Q range before W can set up, and Q's single-target trade locks you in melee where dives delete you.

Overview

Viktor is a control mage with a unique progression system: his passive Glorious Evolution lets him permanently augment Q, W, E and finally R by collecting Hex Fragments from kills and assists. Each augment makes the ability stronger in a meaningful way — augmented Q gives a bigger shield and a burst of movement speed, augmented E leaves an explosion behind the ray, augmented W slows enemies hit by any of his spells, and augmented R grows the storm and extends its duration whenever someone dies under it. That progression is the whole identity of the champion: every fragment makes him scarier and the late game is overwhelming.

His game plan is to survive lane with W zoning and Q trades, push waves with E as soon as you have mana, and steer Arcane Storm (R) onto clustered enemies in objective fights once you have at least two items. Skill expression sits in W placement (force the enemy into the stun zone, block escape paths for ganks) and in R steering (you do not just cast it — you keep moving it onto the carries throughout the fight, ten seconds is a long time).

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Ring Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potion Health Potions. Viktor's mana pool is bad at level 1, the Ring's regen is the difference between hitting six and hitting four E casts in the first base.

Core items (in order):

  1. Luden's Echo Luden's Echo — burst spike, the AOE bolts pair with E waveclear, and the mana sustain lets you spam E on cooldown.
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration for the squishy targets you most want to delete.
  3. Shadowflame Shadowflame — extra burst, the HP-threshold passive (Cinderbloom: your magic and true damage critically strike enemies below 40% HP for 20% extra damage) lines up with R ticks finishing low-HP carries.
  4. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game scaling multiplier on top of all your previous AP — your highest single-item damage swing.

Situational items:

  • Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass — into divers and assassins (Zed, Diana, Talon, Akali, Naafiri). Stasis covers your R steering window so the storm stays on target while you wait out the burst.
  • Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil — into heavy single-target magic CC (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun) that would otherwise kill you before you can cast R.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — into healing-stacking compositions (Soraka mid, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo top).
  • Void Staff Void Staff — the moment any priority target buys a Magic Resist item.
  • Cryptbloom Cryptbloom — alternative to Void Staff: 30% magic penetration plus a heal nova on your team when a champion you damaged dies.

Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes is the default. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity is acceptable if you want more R uses per fight in a long siege game.

Skill order: Max E first (waveclear and main DPS), Q second (trade and shield), W last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight, or Domination with Cheap Shot and Ultimate Hunter if the enemy team is full of low-resistance squishies and you have safe lane priority.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Viktor beats

  • Immobile AP mage with ground-target Q

Karthus Lay Waste (Q) has a long ground-target wind-up that locks him in place, so Viktor drops Gravity Field (W) on top and the stun procs before he can recast. Hextech Ray (E) plus the augmented Siphon Power (Q) auto finishes him before Defile (E) drain stacks.

    Karthus
  • Immobile AP scaler with ground-target W

Veigar Dark Matter (W) has a long ground-target wind-up that locks him in place, so Viktor drops Gravity Field (W) on top and the stun procs before he can recast. Hextech Ray (E) plus the augmented Siphon Power (Q) auto finishes him before Event Horizon (E) cage drops.

    Veigar
  • Group-up engage tank with channel ult

Sion telegraphs stacking on his Unstoppable Onslaught (R) charge, so Viktor steers Arcane Storm (R) onto the cluster for ten seconds of AOE damage. Gravity Field (W) stuns him during Decimating Smash (Q) wind-up and Hextech Ray (E) chunks through Soul Furnace (W) shield stacks.

    Sion
  • Group-up engage tank with leap ult

Malphite telegraphs stacking on his Unstoppable Force (R) leap, so Viktor steers Arcane Storm (R) onto the cluster for ten seconds of AOE damage. Gravity Field (W) stuns him during Seismic Shard (Q) walk-up and Hextech Ray (E) shreds through Granite Shield passive refresh

    Malphite
  • Group-up engage tank with magnet ult

Rell telegraphs stacking on her Magnet Storm (R) pull, so Viktor steers Arcane Storm (R) onto the cluster for ten seconds of AOE damage. Gravity Field (W) stuns her during Ferromancy Crash Down (W) leap setup and Hextech Ray (E) shreds through Break the Mold passive armor steal.

    Rell

Champions that beat Viktor

  • Mobile AD assassin with shadow dashes

Zed Living Shadow (W) swap path plus Death Mark (R) dash chain skips Viktor Gravity Field (W) tick and closes the 600 range gap before the field stuns. Viktor has no dash to peel and Razor Shuriken (Q) plus Shadow Slash (E) shred him through the Siphon Power (Q) shield.

    Zed
  • Mobile AP assassin with stealth dash

Akali Shuriken Flip (E) plus Perfect Execution (R) two-stage dash chain skips Viktor Gravity Field (W) tick and closes the 600 range gap before the field stuns. Twilight Shroud (W) invisibility breaks his target lock during Hextech Ray (E) cast and Assassin's Mark proc bursts

    Akali
  • Mobile AD assassin with pack dashes

Naafiri We Are More passive packmates plus Eviscerate (E) and Hounds' Pursuit (R) dash chain skips Viktor Gravity Field (W) tick and closes the 600 range gap before the field stuns. Darkin Daggers (Q) plus The Call of the Pack (W) shred him through the Siphon Power (Q) shield.

    Naafiri
  • Wind Wall projectile blocker

Yasuo Wind Wall (W) eats Hextech Ray (E) on the cast line and Arcane Storm (R) projectiles inside the column, so Viktor only safe poke gets refunded. Sweeping Blade (E) dive through Gravity Field (W) tick lands Last Breath (R) on knock-up before the Siphon Power (Q) shield procs.

    Yasuo
  • Dash-heavy skirmisher with knock-up ultimate

Yone Mortal Steel (Q) stacked dash and Fate Sealed (R) knock-up dive through Gravity Field (W) before the 1.25-second stun ticks, and Soul Unbound (E) lets him retreat to his body. Spirit Cleave (W) shield absorbs Hextech Ray (E) chip while Viktor has no dash to peel.

    Yone

Key matchups

  • Yasuo / Yone: Yasuo can Wind Wall your E, which is your only ranged damage tool, while Yone has no wall, only the Spirit Cleave shield. Use Luden's Echo Luden's Echo waveclear from max range, bait the wall by faking the cast, and only commit a real E after their wall cooldown is visible.
  • Zed: Hardest counter. Buy Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass before Shadowflame Shadowflame, hold W for the moment he dashes in and not before, and never push the wave past river before level 6 — he will all-in you under tower.
  • Orianna: Skill matchup, decided by team fights. Her range matches yours; do not get baited into auto-attack trades because she scales harder with the same item set. Keep your W for Command: Shockwave (R) denial.
  • Twisted Fate: Roam priority race. If he picks gold card on you, W the moment he casts it (the stun zone catches him on landing); otherwise track his R with vision wards on river and tri-bush.
  • Annie: You out-range her on E but lose every all-in past level 6 because of her Tibbers flash engage. Stand behind your wave, never let her stack stun in melee range, and buy Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil before Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap if she is fed.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: With one point in E plus the Q you started with, you can trade by walking up, Q-ing for the shield, weaving the empowered auto, then E-ing the wave. The shield eats one auto of harass for free.
  • Level 6: First Arcane Storm unlocks objective pressure. Drop it on the Scuttle Crab fight or on the first Drake — even unaugmented it ticks for big AOE damage over its full duration.
  • Luden's Echo Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 12-14): Wave control flips. You can shove and roam with the wave on the enemy's side, and the AOE bolts mean your E one-shots the caster minions on cooldown.
  • All four abilities augmented (~ minute 18-22): This is the real Viktor spike. Augmented R grows and extends every time someone dies under it — in a clean 5v5 your storm can last twenty seconds and cover the entire fight.

Common mistakes

  • Holding Q for empty waves. Push the wave on cooldown with E when you have mana; the trade you give up is much smaller than the priority you gain for roams and Scuttle.
  • Casting R and forgetting to steer it. Arcane Storm lasts ten seconds and you control where it walks the whole time. A stationary R wastes most of its damage — keep clicking the carry as they reposition.
  • Standing in your own W zone. Gravity Field does not stun you, but it telegraphs your position to flankers — never sit on top of the field, place it between you and the enemy.
  • Buying full damage into heavy dive comps. If the enemy team has two or more divers (Zed + Wukong, Diana + Yasuo), build Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass as your third item before Shadowflame Shadowflame. A dead Viktor does zero DPS.
  • Ignoring the augment quest. Last-hit minions and assist on every gank to pile Hex Fragments — a Viktor who is two augments behind at minute 16 plays like a worse Annie.

Advanced tip

Use Gravity Field (W) as a vision check, not just as crowd control. The zone reveals enemies that walk through it, even invisible champions (like Akali inside her shroud or Pyke inside his Ghostwater Dive). Drop it on common gank paths — river bush, tri-bush — right before a teammate cooldown is up, and you get free information plus a stun if anyone is already mid-walk.
