Sorcery primary: Summon Aery procs on every W tick and Q hit, scaling poke into a damage support's win condition. Manaflow Band sustains W spam, Transcendence adds 10 ability haste by level 8, Scorch closes burn poke at the HP threshold that forces a recall on the enemy ADC.
Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery for lane sustain (you have no built-in healing) and Cosmic Insight for more frequent Flash and summoner spells — Flash is your only escape against hook supports.
If the enemy team has 2+ low-resistance carries, swap Inspiration to Domination with Cheap Shot (proc on your Q slow) and Ultimate Hunter (6 ultimate ability haste, plus 5 more per first takedown on each enemy) — turns R from a fight-saver into a per-skirmish tool.
Win Condition
Poke the enemy ADC with W and Q from max range until they cannot trade, then E knock-up to set up your ADC's all-in, finishing with R for true-damage execution.
Weakness
No mobility, no peel for your ADC, R is interruptible. Hard countered by hook supports (Blitzcrank, Thresh) and any longer-range artillery (Xerath, Lux).
Overview
Vel'Koz support is a long-range poke mage who plays bot lane as a damage-first support. He gives up the standard support tools (no peel shield, no engage hook, no heal) in exchange for raw skillshot output. The kit is identical to mid Vel'Koz: Plasma Fission (Q) for slow poke, Void Rift (W) for sustained damage at 1050 range, Tectonic Disruption (E) as the only hard CC (a delayed knock-up), and Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) to research and execute. The passive Organic Deconstruction (P) stacks per ability hit — at 3 stacks, the next instance of damage deals true damage (damage that ignores Magic Resist).
Your job in lane is straightforward: poke the enemy ADC out of trading range with W + Q, set up your ADC's all-in with E knock-up, and follow up with R for the execute. You have no peel — if your ADC gets engaged on, you respond with damage, not protection. This means you need an ADC that can self-peel (Caitlyn, Jhin, Ezreal) or threaten an all-in back (Lucian, Tristana). You also need to be paranoid about hook supports: a single Rocket Grab lands and you are dead.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
World Atlas + 2 Health Potions. You proc gold tribute on Q-W harass, which keeps your gold income on par with carry roles despite no farm.
Core items (in order):
Bloodsong — finished support item upgraded from World Atlas after the gold-tribute quest. The Spellblade passive adds bonus damage on your next basic attack after casting an ability — pairs with Q or W for an extra burst chunk on the enemy ADC.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity — ability haste boots; your damage comes from ability rotation, not magic penetration on support gold budget.
Luden's Echo — first damage item. Burst spike on every Q hit, mana sustain for W spam.
Shadowflame — second damage item; HP-threshold passive lines up with R-execute windows on squishy carries.
Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game scaling multiplier. By the time you afford this, you have already converted support gold into mid-tier damage and Rabadon's tips you into oneshot range.
Situational items:
Zhonya's Hourglass — vs hook supports (Blitzcrank, Thresh, Pyke). Stasis on a hook lands turns the death sentence into a 2.5s stall while your ADC walks back.
Banshee's Veil — vs single-target magic CC (Morgana Q, Lux Q) that interrupts your R channel.
Morellonomicon — vs healing enchanter comps (Soraka, Sona, Yuumi on the enemy team).
Rylai's Crystal Scepter — vs fast-moving dive (Rakan, Alistar Flash engage). W and R apply slow on every tick, so Rylai's locks divers in melee range for your ADC to clean up.
Void Staff — when the enemy carries buy any Magic Resist item. Boosts W and Q poke; R already deals true damage at 3 stacks, so Void Staff is for the pre-execute setup damage.
Boots:
Ionian Boots of Lucidity is default for support gold.
Sorcerer's Shoes is acceptable if you already have all damage items and the enemy has no Magic Resist.
Skill order: Max W first (main poke and waveclear), Q second (slow + cone), E last (the value is the knock-up, not the rank scaling). Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Sorcery with Summon Aery, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight, or Domination with Cheap Shot and Ultimate Hunter if you want shorter R cooldown for skirmishes.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Velkoz beats
Enchanter without disengage and HP-cost heal
Soraka Starcall (Q) 810 range falls short of Vel'Koz Plasma Fission (Q) 1050 range, so she eats Q poke every wave. Astral Infusion (W) costs her own HP to heal her ADC and Equinox (E) short ground range forces her into Void Rift (W) tick damage zone before silence lands.
SorakaEnchanter with short-range support spells
Sona Hymn of Valor (Q) 825 range falls short of Vel'Koz Plasma Fission (Q) 1050 range, so she eats Q poke every wave. She has no hard CC pre-6 to peel Tectonic Disruption (E) knock-up on her ADC and Power Chord passive damage cannot match Organic Deconstruction true damage burst.
SonaAttached enchanter with no hard engage
Yuumi You and Me! (W) requires ally proximity, so Vel'Koz Tectonic Disruption (E) knock-up on the carry kicks her off and exposes her to Plasma Fission (Q) burst. Prowling Projectile (Q) range falls short of Vel'Koz Void Rift (W) zone.
YuumiPeel enchanter with point-and-click polymorph
Lulu Whimsy (W) is a point-and-click polymorph at 650 range, shorter than Vel'Koz Plasma Fission (Q) 1050 range, so she steps into Void Rift (W) tick damage zone to use it.
LuluShort-range melee engage without ranged gap-close
Alistar Pulverize (Q) is melee-range and Headbutt (W) is 650, both shorter than Vel'Koz Plasma Fission (Q) 1050. Vel'Koz pokes him down before he can Flash-engage and Tectonic Disruption (E) knock-up interrupts his walk-up before Unbreakable Will (R) damage reduction activates.
Alistar
Champions that beat Velkoz
Hook support with point-and-click projectile
Blitzcrank Rocket Grab (Q) 1100 range pulls Vel'Koz out of position before he can dodge, and chains into Power Fist (E) knock-up plus Static Field (R) silence burst for a guaranteed kill. Mana Barrier passive shields him against retaliation Q poke during the lane phase.
BlitzcrankHook support with flay and lantern utility
Thresh Death Sentence (Q) 1075 range hooks Vel'Koz out of position and chains into Flay (E) displacement plus The Box (R) wall trap for a guaranteed kill. Vel'Koz has no Flash-cancel mid-animation and Damnation passive scales armor through the laning phase soul drops.
ThreshRoaming assassin support with execute
Pyke Bone Skewer (Q) charged 1100 range hooks Vel'Koz and chains into Phantom Undertow (E) dash stun plus Death From Below (R) execute. Gift of the Drowned Ones passive heals back chip damage and Ghostwater Dive (W) camouflage roams to mid-river setup.
PykeTank engage support with chained point-and-click CC
Leona Zenith Blade (E) dashes onto Vel'Koz from outside his Plasma Fission (Q) recast cone and chains into Shield of Daybreak (Q) stun plus Solar Flare (R) AOE. Sunlight passive marks the target and gap-closes past Void Rift (W) cast time before he can Tectonic Disruption (E).
LeonaTank engage support with hook-and-chain CC
Nautilus Dredge Line (Q) hook skillshot pulls Vel'Koz inside Staggering Blow passive root plus Riptide (E) slow, locking him down inside Void Rift (W) cast time. Depth Charge (R) bounces unstoppable chain stun and Titan's Wrath (W) shield tanks Plasma Fission (Q).

Key matchups
- Blitzcrank: Hard counter. Stand permanently behind a minion or behind your ADC; one Rocket Grab lands on a clean line and you die. Hold Flash for hook escape, never use it offensively in lane.
- Soraka: Free matchup. Your W outranges everything she has, E knock-up cancels her Wish channel mid-cast. Poke her until she has to recall, then push 2 waves while she walks back.
- Lulu / Yuumi: Bait the attach. Walk to the side of a minion wave, drop E on the carry when Yuumi/Lulu is committed to peel — the knock-up forces them off and exposes a clean Q + W combo on the now-isolated carry.
- Leona: Dangerous. She trades 1 walk-up for 1 stun + ADC follow-up. Always stand 1100+ units away (outside Zenith Blade range), warding the bush she would come from. Save E as your reaction to her engage — knock-up cancels Zenith Blade mid-flight.
- Xerath: Outranged in poke. You cannot win a sustained Q-for-Q trade. Roam to mid level 6 with R: cross-map snipes are the way to compensate for losing lane farm without committing 4v5 to lane.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2: With W + E unlocked, your first all-in window opens. Land E on the enemy ADC, follow with W at point-blank, and your ADC's first ability lands the killing blow.
- Level 6: First Life Form Disintegration Ray. Combined with a passive set-up from Q-E-W, the R execute true-damages the enemy ADC for a guaranteed kill if Flash is down.
Bloodsong completion (~ minute 12-14): Support gold spike. The Spellblade proc adds bonus physical damage to your next basic attack after every ability — combine with Q to chip the enemy ADC every trade.
Luden's Echo online (~ minute 18-22, slower than mid Vel'Koz): Your roams matter. Group as the 5th member on dragon and Baron — your R range out-poles the enemy support and lets you melt their ADC from outside their peel.
Common mistakes
- Walking up to land Tectonic Disruption. The cast range is only 810 — much shorter than your other abilities. Use it as a reaction to a target slowed by Q, never as an opener. If you E-step forward, you walk into enemy support hook range.
- R-channelling on a 0-stack target. Always land at least one W or Q before R so the beam transitions from magic damage to true damage early. A naked R on a 0-stack tank does almost nothing — you lose 2.5 seconds of zero contribution to the fight.
- Standing inside your ADC's hitbox. Two AoE skillshots (Lux E, Morgana Q-W combo) catch you both. Stand 200-300 units away from your ADC, on the opposite side from where the threat is coming from.
- Forgetting you have no peel. When the enemy support hard-engages, your reflex should be damage to force the trade, not a panic-shield (you do not have one). Drop E under your ADC's feet to knock-up the diver, then Q + W on the engage support.
- W-spam without checking enemy support's CC cooldown. Void Rift has the longest cast time in your kit. Casting it inside the enemy hook range (Blitz Q, Thresh Q) gets you grabbed mid-cast. Lead with Q to slow first; if their hook is up, hold W until their dash/hook is on cooldown.
Advanced tip
Use R as a vision tool, not just damage. The beam reveals stealth and brush — channel R through a side-lane brush you suspect is warded by the enemy jungler, and you both clear the ward and deal damage to anyone inside. In mid-game skirmishes around dragon, casting R from inside the river into the dragon pit pre-fight reveals the enemy jungler's positioning and applies 1-2 stacks of passive on any squishy who lingers — meaning the next R in the actual fight transitions to true damage on the first hit.
