Sorcery primary: Summon Aery procs off W ticks and Q hits for free poke on a sustained-skillshot champion. Manaflow Band fuels W spam, Transcendence adds 5 ability haste at level 5 and 5 more at level 8, Scorch closes poke where R-execute lines up.
Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight for early-game mana sustain and more frequent Flash to bait dives and reposition during the 2.5s R channel.
If the enemy team has 2+ low-resistance squishies, swap Inspiration to Precision with Presence of Mind (mana refund on takedown) and Coup de Grace (+8% damage under 40% HP) — the threshold lines up with R-execute windows.
Win Condition
Stack Organic Deconstruction on the priority target with E knock-up into Q-W, then channel R from max range (1575) behind your front line for true damage execution.
Weakness
No dash, no innate mobility, R channel is interruptible. Hard countered by mobile assassins and any reliable stun (Pantheon Shield Vault, Veigar Event Horizon).
Overview
Vel'Koz is a long-range artillery mage who wins fights by stacking his Organic Deconstruction (P) passive on the priority target and then unloading Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) for true damage — damage that ignores Magic Resist. His kit is all skillshots: Plasma Fission (Q) for poke and slow, Void Rift (W) for waveclear and sustained damage, Tectonic Disruption (E) as the only hard CC (a delayed knock-up at short range), and R for the big payoff. He has no dash, no innate movement speed, and his ultimate is a 2.5-second channel — meaning he is one of the most positioning-dependent champions in the mid lane.
His game plan is straightforward: shove the wave with W, poke with Q at max range, never face-check fog without a ward, and look for the E knock-up into Q + W combo that hard-locks a 3-stack passive proc on a priority target. Mid suits him because he has lane priority at level 6 — "priority" means the freedom to roam without losing your wave — and because the river offers two wards' worth of vision he can punish with W poke from outside auto-attack range.
Recommended Build
Starting items: Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potions. Take Corrupting Potion only if you expect heavy auto-attack harass against you (rare into mid mages).
Core items (in order):
Luden's Echo — burst spike and mana sustain for W spam. The proc lines up with every Q hit.
Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration to delete the squishy targets you most want to research with R.
Shadowflame — extra burst, the HP-threshold passive (extra damage to targets under 40% HP) lines up cleanly with R-execute windows.
Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game scaling multiplier; your highest-AP item slot, and your R does percentage AP scaling per tick.
Void Staff — the moment any priority target buys a Magic Resist item. Note: R already deals true damage on a 3-stack target, so Void Staff buffs your W and Q poke, not the R execute.
Situational items:
Zhonya's Hourglass — into divers and assassins (Zed, Akali, Talon, Diana). Stasis lets you finish a partially-charged R channel after the dive lands on you.
Banshee's Veil — vs single-target magic CC that interrupts your R (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun).
Morellonomicon — vs healing-stacking compositions (Soraka mid, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo top).
Rylai's Crystal Scepter — vs fast-moving threats (Master Yi, Hecarim). Your W and R apply slow on every tick, so Rylai's adds permanent kite.
Boots:
Sorcerer's Shoes is default. Ionian Boots of Lucidity is acceptable if the enemy team has no Magic Resist items and you want shorter R cooldown for cross-map snipes.
Skill order: Max W first (main waveclear and DPS), Q second (slow + cone coverage), E last (the value is the knock-up, not the rank scaling). Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Sorcery with Summon Aery, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight, or Precision with Presence of Mind and Coup de Grace if the enemy team has multiple low-resistance squishies.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Velkoz beats
Immobile AP mage with delayed Q
Tectonic Disruption (E) lands a 0.625s delayed knock-up Karthus cannot dodge without a dash, setting up Plasma Fission (Q) plus Void Rift (W) for the 3-stack Organic Deconstruction true-damage proc. Lay Waste (Q) needs standing still and Defile (E) burns his mana fast.
KarthusImmobile AP scaler with cage stun
Tectonic Disruption (E) knock-up cancels Veigar Event Horizon (E) cage cast mid-windup, setting up Plasma Fission (Q) plus Void Rift (W) for the 3-stack Organic Deconstruction true-damage proc.
VeigarImmobile AP control mage without dash
Tectonic Disruption (E) delayed knock-up cancels Anivia Flash Frost (Q) cast mid-flight, setting up Plasma Fission (Q) plus Void Rift (W) for the 3-stack Organic Deconstruction true-damage proc. The Rebirth passive egg dies inside Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) channel.
AniviaBackline scalers with weak escape
Senna's Piercing Darkness and Ziggs's Bouncing Bomb scale into long range but neither has a dash; Vel'Koz's Tectonic Disruption knock-up still lands when they reposition, setting up Plasma Fission plus Void Rift for the 3-stack proc and an R execute from 1575 range.
SennaMid-range burst mage with telegraphed all-in
Annie Disintegrate (Q) plus Incinerate (W) burst needs close 625 range to land, while Vel'Koz Void Rift (W) outranges that cast distance. Tectonic Disruption (E) knock-up interrupts her Flash plus Summon Tibbers (R) all-in combo before Pyromania passive stun lands the kill.
Annie
Champions that beat Velkoz
Mobile assassin with multi-stage dashes
Akali Shuriken Flip (E) plus Perfect Execution (R) two-stage dash enters Vel'Koz Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) channel window before he can finish, and the R locks him in place for 2.5s, breaking the moment Twilight Shroud (W) invisibility blocks line of sight.
AkaliMobile assassin with untargetable dodge
Fizz Playful / Trickster (E) untargetable dash enters Vel'Koz Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) channel window before he can finish, and Urchin Strike (Q) closes the gap on him during the 2.5s lock-in. Chum the Waters (R) shark zone displaces him out of his own positioning anchor.
FizzScaling AP assassin with blink ultimate
Kassadin Riftwalk (R) teleports past Plasma Fission (Q) skillshots and the stack cooldown drops on takedown, punishing Vel'Koz lack of dash to peel after Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) commits. Force Pulse (E) slow and Null Sphere (Q) channel interrupt break his W tick pattern.
KassadinScaling AP assassin with dagger resets
Katarina Shunpo (E) blink plus Death Lotus (R) channel out-trades Vel'Koz Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) channel because Voracity passive resets cooldowns on takedown. Bouncing Blade (Q) and Preparation (W) chain dagger pickups while Vel'Koz has no peel dash.
KatarinaBurst skirmisher with point-and-click leap stun
Pantheon Shield Vault (W) is a point-and-click dash stun that interrupts Vel'Koz Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) channel mid-cast. Comet Spear (Q) empowered by Mortal Will passive deletes him during the stun and Grand Starfall (R) lands global pressure on his lane priority.

Key matchups
- Yasuo / Yone: Yasuo's Wind Wall blocks Q and W payload, while Yone has no wall, only the Spirit Cleave shield. Bait the wall with one W at the edge of its detection range, then commit your real combo. Hold E for when they Sweeping Blade onto you — the knock-up beats the dash mid-flight.
- Akali / Diana: Dive threats with multi-stage dashes. Buy
Zhonya's Hourglass as your second item before Shadowflame; never use Flash offensively in lane against them, save it as your interrupt escape during their all-in window. - Xerath: Outranged. Sit behind minions, do not try to trade Q for Q; his Arcanopulse outranges yours once it is charged. Roam side lanes — your R is mobile during channel, his is rooted-cast.
- Twisted Fate: Roam priority race. He has gold card hard CC at point-blank range; ward both sides of the river. If he flanks bot, your R outranges his teleport setup — call it from far away and let your ADC peel.
- Kassadin: Pre-6 you dominate (his Q reaches only 650 units, your W outranges everything he has). Post-16 he scales harder. Shove waves, build a level lead, force fights pre-minute 25 before his Riftwalk stacks become free.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 6: First Life Form Disintegration Ray turns Vel'Koz from a poke mage into a kill threat. With 2 stacks of passive on a Q-E set up, your R completes the third stack mid-channel and the rest of the beam deals true damage (damage that ignores Magic Resist).
Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 12-14): Wave control flips. You can shove on cooldown with W, roam to bot with TP/R, and snipe Scuttle skirmishes from outside the pit.
Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 24-28): Your R one-shots squishies that have not built a Magic Resist item, and 3-stacks the front line in 2 abilities. Force objective fights and stand at max R range (1575) behind your tank.- Three items + level 11: Second R rank unlocks every 90 seconds. Pair it with vision in the enemy jungle and you can punish 4v5 timings while a side laner is recalling.
Common mistakes
- Walking up to land Tectonic Disruption. The cast range is only 810 — shorter than your other abilities. Use it as a follow-up to a slow from Plasma Fission, not as an opener. If you E first, you walk into auto-attack range of the entire enemy team.
- Channelling R without a stack count plan. If the target has zero passive stacks, the first second of R only deals magic damage. Always land at least 1 ability before R — ideally 2 — so the beam transitions into true damage early. Cancel R early if the stacks are missing rather than burning the whole channel on magic damage.
- Greedy W during poke wars. Void Rift has the longest cast time in your kit. Casting it inside an enemy's stun range (Annie Q, Veigar W) gets you locked the moment you commit. Stand at the edge of your W max range, not the middle.
- Auto-positioning at max R range in teamfights. Maximum R range puts you outside your team's peel. Stand at the second-furthest position, so a flanking assassin does not catch you alone.
- Forgetting Q has a recast cone. Plasma Fission splits into two angled bolts on reactivation. If the first bolt is going to miss, recast at 600-800 units distance — the cone covers two sidesteps. Free poke that most opponents do not respect.
Advanced tip
Practice the Q-recast timing to land both bolts on a single target. Recast when the bolt is roughly at the middle of its flight and it splits into two new bolts at a 90 degree angle. Against a target trying to dodge sideways, the recast bolt on the dodge direction lands cleanly — you essentially get two Q hits for one cast, stacking 2 of the 3 passive marks needed for true-damage R.
