Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet procs on every Q (proc = passive trigger) and W landing, adding free poke. Manaflow Band solves early Q-spam mana costs, Transcendence adds 5 ability haste at level 5 and 5 more at level 8, Scorch finishes low-HP enemies under tower.
Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery solves Veigar's mana hunger the first 6 levels (Veigar has no innate sustain) and Cosmic Insight gives extra Flash uptime — Flash is your only escape, the kit has no dash.
Vs hard-engage tank supports (Leona, Nautilus, Rell) — to survive the first stun chain swap Inspiration to Resolve with Bone Plating (cuts back-to-back damage from the engage combo) and Revitalize (boosts the Mikael's Blessing shield, your main defensive option).
Win Condition
Poke 2v2 with Q every cooldown to stack AP off enemy champions; with 60+ stacks, a single E + W + Q on a squishy is a kill setup. Post-6, R executes the enemy support whenever they step too far forward.
Weakness
No shield, no heal, no peel except E. No dash, no escape outside Flash. One hook (Blitzcrank, Thresh, Pyke) or one engage chain (Leona, Nautilus, Rakan) and you die before you cast a spell. Long mana costs in early lane.
Overview
Veigar support is the same champion as Veigar mid with a smaller gold income and a different priority list. He gives up the safety of farming Q under tower in exchange for a stack source that never stops — every spell hit on an enemy champion gives permanent AP through Phenomenal Evil Power, and bot lane is two enemy champions standing in your Q line for 14 minutes. By minute 20 a good Veigar support has 40-60 passive stacks just from poke, enough that a single E + W combo nukes the enemy ADC under tower.
The cost is what the cost has always been for Veigar: no dash, no shield, no heal, no peel except Event Horizon (E) — a cage of dark matter that stuns anything crossing the outer ring. The lane plan is therefore conservative: stay behind your ADC, throw Q on cooldown to chip the enemy and stack passive AP, hold E for the enemy engage (Leona dash, Pyke hook, Rakan charm), and only commit to R when you have set up the kill with cage and W. The pick is binary: either your ADC is patient and lets you stack until your W + Q + R kills on first contact, or you die to one hook in the first 6 minutes and feed the enemy bot lane two kills.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
World Atlas (the AP support starter that quests into Bloodsong) + 2
Health Potions.
Core items (in order):
Bloodsong — the support quest reward from World Atlas. Mandatory: it gives the gold income that lets you buy real items, 200 health and four ward charges. It carries no ability power at all, so treat it as your wallet and your vision, not as damage.
Luden's Echo — burst spike, ability haste, and mana sustain so you can keep spamming Q on the wave to stack passive.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity — extra ability haste on top of Luden's puts your R below 60 seconds, so you can execute twice per teamfight rotation.
Shadowflame — 110 ability power and 15 flat magic penetration, plus the Cinderbloom passive: your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% health for 20% extra damage, which lines up perfectly with the R finish.
Rabadon's Deathcap — the late-game multiplier. Buy this fifth so it amplifies the AP you already stacked on the passive (the multiplier applies to base AP and stack AP equally).
Situational items:
Mikael's Blessing — vs hard CC threats on your ADC (Leona stun chain, Morgana Q, Pyke hook). The cleanse-on-ally turns one bad hook into a survivable trade.
Locket of the Iron Solari — vs heavy area-of-effect engage comps (Malphite, Yasuo, Wukong, Kennen). The shield aura covers the moment your team groups for a fight.
Zhonya's Hourglass — vs assassins who jump on you directly (Pyke ult chain, Rakan flank, Pantheon roam). Stasis buys time for the ADC to peel you.
Void Staff — buy when any priority target finishes their first Magic Resist item (Maw of Malmortius, Wit's End, Banshee's Veil on a squishy).
Boots:
Ionian Boots of Lucidity is default for support Veigar (more R uptime > more magic penetration when you are not the main damage carry).
Sorcerer's Shoes is acceptable if the enemy team has 3+ low-resistance squishies and you are the damage carry of your team.
Skill order: Take E (Event Horizon) at level 1 — your only peel and only gank-deterrent. Max Q (Baleful Strike) first for poke + stacking, W (Dark Matter) second for follow-up nuke, E last (one point gives you the stun, more points just extend duration). Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight. Swap secondary to Resolve with Bone Plating + Revitalize vs hard-engage tank supports (Leona, Nautilus, Rell).
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Veigar beats
Attached enchanter with low HP body
Baleful Strike (Q) out-pokes the shield throughput Yuumi gets from Zoomies (E). She loses her body to one Event Horizon (E) plus Dark Matter (W) rotation when she detaches to last-hit, and You and Me! (W) cannot reattach during stun. Final Chapter (R) blocked.
YuumiSquishy enchanter with HP-cost heals
Astral Infusion (W) costs Soraka her own HP, so Baleful Strike (Q) pokes bleed her dry over the lane phase. Starcall (Q) walk-up range falls inside Veigar Q range and Wish (R) global heal cannot save the ADC during Primordial Burst (R) execute window.
SorakaSquishy enchanter with knock-up disengage
Janna lacks self-sustain and her low HP pool dies to a single Event Horizon (E) plus Dark Matter (W) plus Primordial Burst (R) rotation when caught out of position. Howling Gale (Q) and Monsoon (R) disengage land before Veigar Q range so Eye Of The Storm (E) wastes shield uptime.
JannaTelegraphed engage tank with line dash
Zenith Blade (E) is a line lock-on dash with clear telegraph that Event Horizon (E) catches on entry, locking her for Veigar Dark Matter (W) plus Primordial Burst (R) execute. Sunlight passive marks the ADC but Leona dies during her own Solar Flare (R) stun setup.
LeonaTelegraphed engage tank with hook skillshot
Dredge Line (Q) is a skillshot hook with windup telegraph that Event Horizon (E) catches when Nautilus pulls himself in, locking him for Veigar Dark Matter (W) plus Primordial Burst (R) execute. Staggering Blow passive root cannot fire during cage stun.
Nautilus
Champions that beat Veigar
Hook support with point-and-click projectile
Rocket Grab (Q) is a 1100-range projectile that pulls Veigar out of his own Event Horizon (E) before the cage stuns. He has no dash, no shield until Banshee's Veil completion. One hook equals Dark Matter (W) plus Power Fist (E) plus auto execute under tower kill.
BlitzcrankHook support with flay and lantern utility
Death Sentence (Q) is a 1075-range hook that pulls Veigar out of his own Event Horizon (E) before the cage stuns, then Flay (E) follow-up displaces him further. The Box (R) wall blocks his Flash escape and Damnation passive scales armor over the lane.
ThreshMobile engage support with charm chain
Grand Entrance (W) jumps on Veigar and the knock-up interrupts Dark Matter (W) cast mid-windup, displacing Veigar inside his own Event Horizon (E) before the stun triggers. The Quickness (R) charms him out of every Flash kite attempt.
RakanMobile engage tank with combo displacement
Headbutt (W) into Pulverize (Q) combo flings Veigar out of his Event Horizon (E) center to a side wall, denying the cage stun trigger. Unbreakable Will (R) damage reduction tanks Primordial Burst (R) burst and Triumphant Roar passive heals Alistar through any retaliation.
AlistarMobile engage tank with wall-stun displacement
Heroic Charge (E) wall-stun displaces Veigar through the Event Horizon (E) perimeter to a side wall, denying the cage stun trigger. Steadfast Presence (W) blocks dashes but not his Flash, and Keeper's Verdict (R) ends every disengage attempt with a long knockback.

Key matchups
- Blitzcrank: Stand behind minions every cast cycle. One hook = one dead Veigar. Buy
Mikael's Blessing earlier than usual; tell your ADC to play passive until level 6. - Leona: Wait for her to commit Zenith Blade, then drop Event Horizon on her dash path so she stuns herself entering it. If she lands the dash anyway, R her first — the ADC is harder to kill than her.
- Yuumi / Soraka: Spam Q every cooldown — both are HP-fragile enchanters who lose health faster than they can heal it back. Look for level 6 all-in on Yuumi the moment she detaches to last-hit a minion.
- Pyke: Hold E until you see his Phantom Undertow stay arrow on the ground. The moment he uses E, drop Event Horizon so the return dash crosses the perimeter and stuns him out of his execute window.
- Xerath / Vel'Koz support: Hard counter matchups. Their Q outranges yours. Hide behind minions during their cast animation, give up CS rather than take harass damage. Buy
Banshee's Veil earlier than usual.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2: Take E at level 1 (cage) and Q at level 2 (poke + stacking). The combination of stun setup + harass tool flips most 2v2 trades in your favour against melee engage supports.
- Level 6: First Primordial Burst (R) unlocks the all-in (an "all-in" is total commit until the kill, no exit). The combo is Q to stack and chip → E on the enemy support to stun → W on the cage → R execute on the lower-HP target. The enemy ADC typically dies under 40% HP.
Bloodsong quest completion (~ minute 10-12): Your gold income jumps. Recall, buy
Luden's Echo components, and start dictating bot lane fights instead of reacting to the enemy support.
Luden's Echo complete + 50+ passive stacks (~ minute 18-22): Your W alone bursts a squishy under 60% HP. Look for picks (eliminating an isolated enemy outside the teamfight) on the enemy support warding alone in the river.
Common mistakes
- Skipping Q on enemy champions to "save for the minion". Wrong: as support you have no farm budget — every Q on an enemy champion is a stack AND a Comet proc. Throw Q every cooldown on whichever enemy is closer.
- Skill-casting E on top of the enemy. Veigar's E is a cage, not a centred skillshot. If you drop it on top of them they walk to the inside immediately and never cross the perimeter. Drop E between the enemy and their retreat path, or between the enemy engage support and your ADC.
- Dropping E on yourself before they commit. E has a long cooldown at low ranks. If you preemptively cage yourself, the enemy support just waits for the stun ring to expire and then engages safely. Hold the cage until they actually start their dash or hook animation.
- Standing in front of your ADC. You have no defensive items in the first 12 minutes. The enemy hook support (Blitzcrank, Thresh, Pyke) is hooking the closest target — make sure it is your ADC, not you, by positioning behind or beside, never in front.
- Using R to last-hit an enemy support at 25% HP. R has a big mana cost and a long cooldown. If they are already at 25% HP, your Q + auto-attack finishes the job. Save R for the ADC who is harder to kill, or for a follow-up execute in the next 30 seconds.
Advanced tip
Practice the W on top of E drop timing in fights. Dark Matter (W) has roughly a 1.2 second cast delay before it lands — long enough that a mobile target walks out unless they are CC'd. The trick is: cast E on the spot you predict they will be in 1 second (usually their flash escape path or the corner they retreat into), then immediately cast W on the same spot. The cage stun freezes them exactly when W lands. Done right, this is a guaranteed 60-70% HP nuke on the enemy ADC from full HP, before you even cast R. The same combo also works defensively: drop E under your own ADC when an assassin Flash-dives — the stun catches the dash entry and W finishes the assassin while your ADC walks away.
