Core Abilities

Phenomenal Evil Power
Permanent stacks of AP for hitting an enemy champion with a spell or scoring a takedown. No cap. The longer the game, the more this passive snowballs Veigar.
Baleful Strike
Baleful Strike
Line skillshot through two units; killing a minion or monster with Q grants extra permanent AP. Main farming and stacking tool — last-hit with Q whenever the cooldown is up.
Dark Matter
Dark Matter
Delayed area-of-effect zone after a short tell. Heavy nuke damage; cooldown ticks down for every Phenomenal Evil stack. Use as zoning tool or as follow-up after E stun.
Event Horizon
Event Horizon
Skill-cast cage of dark matter. Enemies that cross the perimeter (the outer ring, not the inside) are stunned. Your only setup tool; everything else combos off it.
Primordial Burst
Primordial Burst
Point-and-click nuke that scales with the target's missing health — damage is maxed against targets under 33% HP. No range refund, big mana cost.

Why these runes

Sorcery primary: Arcane Comet procs off Q when it is off cooldown (proc = passive trigger), adding free poke. Manaflow Band solves early mana costs, Transcendence adds 10 ability haste by level 8, Gathering Storm matches Veigar's late scaling — rune and passive grow every minute.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery solves the no-sustain laning phase (Veigar has no heal, no shield), and Cosmic Insight gives extra Flash uptime — Flash is the only escape tool in your kit.

When to switch secondary

Vs heavy magic-CC mid lanes (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun) swap Inspiration to Resolve with Bone Plating (reduces back-to-back damage from the CC burst combo) and Revitalize (boosts your shield from Banshee's Veil rebuild).

Win Condition

Stack Q on minions every cooldown so AP keeps climbing past minute 20; set up kills by walling the enemy with E, dropping W on the cage, finishing with Q-R. By minute 25 R one-shots squishies under 33% HP.

Weakness

No mobility, no dash, no innate escape. Heavy mana costs and a level 6 spike that needs you to land E first. Hyper-mobile divers walk past the cage; long-range mages out-poke before E goes online.

Overview

Veigar is the tiny purple yordle (the small fantasy race in League — think furry humanoid) who turns into a one-shot machine by minute 25. His whole kit is built around one mechanic: Phenomenal Evil Power (passive) gives him permanent ability power every time he hits an enemy champion with a spell or kills a unit with Baleful Strike (Q). There is no stack cap. A Veigar who farms 200 minions with Q and lands a few spells on champions has more AP than any other mid laner in the game by the time the first dragon dies.

The price of that scaling is fragility. Veigar has no dash, no shield, no heal, and no escape outside Flash. His only "get off me" tool is Event Horizon (E) — a ring of dark matter that stuns anything crossing the outer rim. The lane plan is therefore conservative: stack Q on every wave to keep AP climbing, hold E for ganks (when the enemy jungler arrives to kill you) and for the level 6 all-in (all-in = total commit until someone dies, no room to back out), and pop R (Primordial Burst) as an execute (an ability that one-shots low-HP targets) when you have set up the kill with cage and W.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Ring Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potion Health Potions. Doran's Ring solves Veigar's mana hunger in the first 6 levels.

Core items (in order):

  1. Luden's Echo Luden's Echo — burst spike, ability haste, and mana sustain so you can keep spamming Q on the wave.
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration so your R execute reaches squishy targets through their starting magic resist.
  3. Shadowflame Shadowflame — 110 ability power and 15 flat magic penetration. Its Cinderbloom passive makes your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% health for 20% extra damage, which lines up perfectly with the R finish.
  4. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — the late-game multiplier. Buy this fourth so it amplifies the AP you already stacked on the passive (the multiplier applies to base AP and stack AP equally).
  5. Void Staff Void Staff — buy this fifth, or earlier if any priority target finishes their first Magic Resist item.

Situational items:

  • Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass — vs divers (champions who jump on the back line — the carries positioned at the rear of the team in a fight) and assassins like Zed, Diana, Talon, Akali, Yone. Stasis buys time for E + W to finish landing.
  • Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil — vs single-target magic CC that opens a fight (Ahri charm, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate stun). The shield eats one ability so your E can land first.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — vs comps that stack healing (Soraka mid/support, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo top).
  • Mejai's Soulstealer Mejai's Soulstealer — only when you already have a clear early lead (2+ kills, no recent deaths). Stacks compound your passive into a true one-shot threat.

Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes is default. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity are acceptable if you already have Void Staff Void Staff and want more R uptime to keep executing.

Skill order: Max Q (Baleful Strike) first — it is your farming and AP-stacking tool. Max W (Dark Matter) second for follow-up damage after E stuns. Max E (Event Horizon) last; one early point is enough for the stun duration. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Gathering Storm. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight. Swap secondary to Resolve with Bone Plating + Revitalize vs heavy magic-CC mid lanes (Ahri, Lissandra, Twisted Fate).

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Veigar beats

  • Burst assassin with shadow-swap mobility

Event Horizon (E) stuns anything crossing the outer ring. Zed Living Shadow (W) swap path walks through the cage edge if perimeter is dropped on landing, locking him during Death Mark (R) for Veigar W Dark Matter and Q execute. Contempt for the Weak passive lost.

    Zed
  • Burst assassin with stealth and dash

Event Horizon (E) stuns Akali on entry through the outer ring. Shuriken Flip (E) dash walks into the cage perimeter if dropped on her landing, locking her for W Dark Matter and Primordial Burst (R) execute before Perfect Execution (R) two-stage burst lands.

    Akali
  • Skirmisher with chains, dash, and stolen ultimates

Sylas Kingslayer (W) lunge and Abscond / Abduct (E) chain pull both require crossing Veigar Event Horizon (E) perimeter to engage. Drop the cage around the wave and the dash entry triggers the stun before Petricite Burst passive empowers his next auto-attack on Veigar.

    Sylas
  • Skirmisher with dash-through-unit and projectile blocker

Yasuo Sweeping Blade (E) dash through minions or yourself requires crossing Veigar Event Horizon (E) ring to close. Drop the cage perimeter on the wave and the dash entry triggers the stun before Wind Wall (W) blocks Baleful Strike (Q) or Way of the Wanderer shield refreshes.

    Yasuo
  • Roaming assassin with wall traversal

Talon Assassin's Path (E) wall hop forces him into a fixed landing spot, and Veigar drops Event Horizon (E) on the landing path so the cross-perimeter stun locks him for the W Dark Matter and Primordial Burst (R) execute window. Blade's End passive bleed cannot land during stun.

    Talon

Champions that beat Veigar

  • Long-range artillery AP mage

Arcanopulse (Q) charged and Shocking Orb (E) at 1050 out-poke Veigar Baleful Strike (Q) 1000 range, denying Phenomenal Evil Power passive stacking on champions. Rite of the Arcane (R) snipes from off-screen before he can finish Event Horizon (E), and Mana Surge sustains him.

    Xerath
  • Long-range artillery AP mage

Plasma Fission (Q) bends around minions and out-ranges Veigar Baleful Strike (Q) 1000 range, while Organic Deconstruction true damage shreds his low-HP pool. Tectonic Disruption (E) knock-up cancels Event Horizon (E) cast and Life Form Disintegration Ray (R) finishes him.

    Vel Koz
  • Long-range painter AP mage with multi-skillshots

Hwei painting skillshots out-range Veigar Baleful Strike (Q) 1000 and the Subject Torment (E) second paint, Gaze of the Abyss, roots Veigar mid Event Horizon (E) cast. Signature of the Visionary detonates for bonus damage and Spiraling Despair (R) drains his HP.

    Hwei
  • Mobile AP assassin with untargetable dodge

Playful / Trickster (E) goes untargetable mid-cage cross, skipping the Event Horizon (E) stun trigger entirely. Urchin Strike (Q) dash gap-closes on Veigar and Chum the Waters (R) shark zone pushes him out of position before Phenomenal Evil Power stacks count.

    Fizz
  • Mobile AP assassin with dagger resets

Shunpo (E) chains dagger pickups outside the Event Horizon (E) perimeter, skipping the stun trigger and resetting cooldowns on every takedown via Voracity passive. Bouncing Blade (Q) chips Veigar off the wave without entering the cage and Death Lotus (R) channels in safety.

    Katarina

Key matchups

  • Zed: Drop Event Horizon (E) on top of yourself when he swaps to his W shadow — the dash entry stuns him. Rush Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass after Luden's Echo Luden's Echo to survive his level 6 all-in.
  • Xerath / Vel'Koz: Hard counter matchups. Stand behind minions to break their long line skillshots, give up CS rather than dying, and play for jungler pressure post-6. Buy Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil earlier than usual.
  • Kassadin: Even pre-6, hard losing post-11. Bully him in the first 5 minutes with Q poke; once he hits R rank 2 the matchup is unwinnable solo — call your jungler.
  • Ahri: Even matchup, decided by who lands their first hard CC. Hold E to wall her charm path back to you; if she leads with R to gap-close, drop E on yourself.
  • Yasuo / Yone: Their dashes need a target. Place E around the minion wave so the moment they dash to a low-HP minion they cross your cage and stun. Do not skill-cast E on top of them — they Wind Wall the W follow-up instead.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: Get E at level 2 (not W). Holding the cage gives a real gank-deterrent (a way to discourage jungler ganks) and forces the enemy to last-hit at long range, where your Q poke matters more.
  • Level 6: First Primordial Burst (R) unlocks the all-in. The combo is E on top of them → W on the cage → Q for stack + Comet proc → R execute. Squishies under 60% HP usually do not survive this rotation.
  • Luden's Echo Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 12-14): Wave control flips — you can shove faster, roam to side lanes when the enemy is recalling, and stack Q on more frequent waves.
  • Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 24-28): Your AP multiplier hits its peak. R now one-shots any squishy not building Magic Resist; force objective fights here and look for picks (eliminating an isolated enemy outside the teamfight) before dragon spawns.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping Q on minions to "save mana". Wrong: every Q last-hit gives permanent AP. Spam Q every cooldown on the wave, even if you do not need the gold — the AP stack is the whole point of the champion.
  • Skill-casting E directly on the enemy. Veigar's E is a cage, not a centred skillshot. If you drop it on top of them they walk to the inside immediately and never cross the perimeter. Drop E on the outside of their path, so they have to step through the ring to retreat or to reach you.
  • Using R to last-hit a low-minion enemy. R has a big mana cost and a long cooldown for what it gives at low ranks. Save it for kill execution, not chip damage. If they are at 30% HP and you do not have E up, walk away — they will recover, you will not get the kill.
  • Standing at max R range in team fights. Veigar has no peel (peel = abilities that protect an ally by stunning attackers off them). At max range you are outside your team's protection; one assassin Flash dive kills you. Stand at the second-furthest position, ready to drop E on yourself.
  • Buying Mejai's Soulstealer before a real lead. Mejai's only works when you are already snowballing. Buying it from behind is dead gold — you keep dying and lose stacks faster than you gain them.

Advanced tip

Practice the W on top of E drop timing. Dark Matter (W) lands only after a noticeable cast delay — long enough that a mobile target can walk out. The trick is to cast E on the spot you predict they will be in 1 second, then immediately cast W on the same spot. The stun freezes them at the exact moment W lands. Done right, this is a guaranteed 60-70% HP nuke on a squishy from full HP, before you even cast R. Practice it in the practice tool against a target dummy at the cage perimeter — the timing is fixed, so once you have the rhythm down, it is reliable in real games.
