Core Abilities

Bravado
After any spell cast, Taric's next 2 basic attacks become empowered: bonus magic damage, faster swing, and -1s cooldown on other spells per attack. The whole kit chains: cast spell, hit two AAs, repeat.
Starlight's Touch
Starlight's Touch
Stacking AOE heal on Taric and nearby allies. Gains a stack every few seconds and every Bravado attack. Press Q to spend all stored stacks — more stacks = bigger heal. The sustain engine of the lane.
Bastion
Bastion
Targeted on an ally: passively shares Taric's bonus Armor and tethers while nearby. Active gives a max-HP shield for a few seconds. Critical: Taric also casts every spell from the Bastion ally — double-origin Q, E, R.
Dazzle
Dazzle
Skillshot: Taric charges a starlight beam for ~1s, then stuns and damages enemies in a line. Long telegraph, but with Bastion the line fires from both Taric and the linked ally — extra angles the enemy cannot pre-dodge.
Cosmic Radiance
Cosmic Radiance
After a 2.5-second delay (visible to enemies), Taric and all nearby allies become invulnerable for 2.5 seconds. With Bastion the radius also centers on the linked ally. Negates execute and burst damage during the window.

Why these runes

Aftershock procs the instant Dazzle stun lands, giving resistances during the all-in window — the only time Taric is locked melee with no out. Font of Life heals you and an ally on Dazzle. Bone Plating cushions trade-back, Revitalize amplifies Q heal and Bastion shield.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Magical Footwear gives free boots at minute 12 to fund the Solstice Sleigh upgrade earlier. Cosmic Insight cuts Flash and active-item cooldowns (Locket, Mikael's, Shurelya's) — critical because Taric's only mobility is Flash.

When to switch secondary

vs heavy poke or ranged lanes (Caitlyn + Karma, Ezreal + Xerath) swap Inspiration to Sorcery with Manaflow Band (mana sustain for Q stack-spam in lane) + Transcendence (ability haste, plus 20% off basic cooldowns on takedowns).

Win Condition

Lock Bastion onto your ADC: every spell fires from two sources. Stun with Dazzle, sustain with Q, and time R when the enemy commits burst — invulnerability negates the all-in and your team cleans up.

Weakness

Zero mobility: no dash, blink, or speed-boost. Long telegraphs on Dazzle (~1s) and Cosmic Radiance (2.5s) let opponents pre-disengage. Sustained poke before level 6 bleeds him out before R is online.

Overview

Taric is an enchanter-engage hybrid built around one mechanic: Bastion. You bind to your ADC, and every spell you cast fires from both you and them — Q heals from two sources, E stuns from two angles, R invulnerability bubble centers on both. His passive Bravado turns spell cooldowns into auto-attacks: cast a spell, hit two empowered basics, and cooldowns shrink.

In lane, keep Bastion on the ADC at all times and stack Q charges through Bravado attacks for sustain heals. Stun with Dazzle through Bastion — the line fires from your linked ally, giving angles the enemy cannot pre-dodge. Mid-game, soak hard CC and time Cosmic Radiance the moment the enemy commits their burst: invulnerability negates execute, ult damage, and chain CC for 2.5 seconds. Late-game, every fight starts on your R timer, not theirs.

Recommended Build

Starting items: World Atlas World Atlas + Stealth Ward Stealth Ward + Health Potion Health Potion. World Atlas upgrades on gold thresholds, not on a clock: Runic Compass after it has generated 400 gold, Bounty of Worlds after another 800, then Solstice Sleigh for free.

Core items (in order):

  1. Solstice Sleigh Solstice Sleigh — Bounty of Worlds engage upgrade. Slowing or immobilising a champion near an ally (any Dazzle stun does it) heals you both and grants 20% decaying Movement Speed for 2.5 seconds. Chase/peel tool on a champion with zero mobility.
  2. Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps — default boots into standard bot lane. 10% reduced auto-attack damage stacks with Bastion's bonus Armor for huge effective HP against marksman damage.
  3. Knight's Vow Knight's Vow — tether to your ADC. 14% of the damage they take redirects to you, and you heal for 12% of the damage they deal to champions. Their damage taken becomes your damage to heal off with Q.
  4. Locket of the Iron Solari Locket of the Iron Solari — AOE team shield active. Pop it as Cosmic Radiance ticks down so the shield blocks damage in the 2.5s delay before invulnerability lands.
  5. Mikael's Blessing Mikael's Blessing — late-game cleanse active for the ADC. Removes hard CC (Ashe R, Morgana Q, Leona R) and restores 100-250 health, but it cannot strip a knock-up or a suppression.

Situational items:

  • Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads — swap from Plated Steelcaps when the enemy team stacks 3+ hard CC abilities (Leona R, Syndra R) and most damage is magic.
  • Redemption Redemption — vs poke comps that bleed you out (Brand + Xerath, Caitlyn + Karma). Heal-on-zone closes the HP gap pre-engage.
  • Zeke's Convergence Zeke's Convergence — when you fight standing on top of the enemy. Casting Cosmic Radiance summons Frostfire Tempest, a 5-second storm dealing 30 magic damage per second and slowing enemies by 30%.
  • Shurelya's Battlesong Shurelya's Battlesong — vs kite or peel comps (Janna + Jinx, Ezreal + Lulu). Active Movement Speed chases enemies your Dazzle cannot reach.
  • Oblivion Orb Oblivion Orb — vs healing-stacking comps (Soraka, Yuumi, Vladimir). An 800-gold component whose magic damage applies 40% Grievous Wounds for 3 seconds.
  • Abyssal Mask Abyssal Mask — vs full AP enemy teams (Brand + Lillia + Veigar). Magic Resist + magic damage aura amplifies your ADC and mid into them.

Boots: Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps is the default against any standard bot lane (you absorb ADC auto-attacks for your carry). Swap to Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads if the enemy team has 3+ hard CC abilities or stacks magic damage.

Skill order: Max E first (Dazzle damage and lower cooldown — your main engage and only hard CC), W second (Bastion shield value and Armor share), Q last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Resolve with Aftershock, Font of Life, Bone Plating, Revitalize. Secondary Inspiration with Magical Footwear and Cosmic Insight. Stat shards: Ability Haste / Health Scaling / Health Scaling.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Taric beats

  • Burst execute ult

Pyke's Death From Below R executes targets below an HP threshold (the bar where the spell starts killing). Cosmic Radiance R grants 2.5 seconds of invulnerability on a wide radius — the execute does 0 damage during the window.

    Pyke
  • Burst execute ult

Karthus's Requiem R is a global nuke that fires after a 3-second channel, and it deals flat damage rather than executing — Cosmic Radiance R's invulnerability window covers the snipe entirely. Lay Waste Q poke is healed by Starlight's Touch Q stacks.

    Karthus
  • Hook engage tank support

Blitzcrank's Rocket Grab Q is a single-projectile hook on a long cooldown that commits his entire engage. Bastion W shield on the ADC eats the Power Fist E follow-up auto, Starlight's Touch Q heals the pull displacement damage.

    Blitzcrank
  • Hook engage tank support

Nautilus's Dredge Line Q hook is a single-shot pull that commits his cooldown to start the fight. Bastion W shield eats the Staggering Blow auto root, Bastion-extended Dazzle E stuns him before Riptide E AOE slow connects.

    Nautilus
  • Hook engage tank support

Thresh's Death Sentence Q hook is a slow projectile he commits to start every fight, and Damnation passive scaling needs souls he cannot collect under Taric pressure. Bastion W shield blocks the Flay E follow-up knock.

    Thresh

Champions that beat Taric

  • Anti-engage support that neutralizes Taric's tools

Morgana's Black Shield E on her ADC blocks Bastion-extended Dazzle E stun, breaking Taric's only hard crowd control. Dark Binding Q roots Taric out of Bastion W tether range, Tormented Shadow W chips him during the root.

    Morgana
  • Anti-engage support that neutralizes Taric's tools

Janna's Monsoon R fires during Cosmic Radiance R's 2.5s delay window and pushes Taric's team out of the ally radius before invulnerability can apply. Howling Gale Q knock-up interrupts the engage before the stun lands, Zephyr W chip slows Taric's approach.

    Janna
  • Long-range zoning mage who wins pre-6 lane

Zyra's Grasping Roots E locks Taric outside Dazzle E's 610 range, freezing him while Garden of Thorns passive plants chip his HP. Stranglethorns R covers Cosmic Radiance R's 2.5s delay window, forcing disengage before invulnerability ends.

    Zyra
  • Long-range zoning mage who wins pre-6 lane

Brand's Sear Q stuns Taric the moment Blaze has him ablaze from Pillar of Flame W or Conflagration E — Taric has no dash to escape the stun. Pyroclasm R bounces past Bastion W tether range, Conflagration E spreads through the linked ADC.

    Brand
  • Early-game lane bully (pre-6 window)

Pantheon's Shield Vault W point-click stun-jump lands before Dazzle E finishes charging, and Comet Spear Q chunks Taric levels 1-5 with no Cosmic Radiance R safety net.

    Pantheon

Key matchups

  • Morgana: Hardest standard support matchup. Her Black Shield (E) on the enemy ADC blocks your Dazzle stun — you lose your only hard CC. Bait her E first: throw a Bastion-empowered Q on the wave, wait for her to shield her ADC, then E-stun once the shield ticks off. Never E into an unbroken Black Shield.
  • Pantheon: Lane bully early. His Shield Vault (W) stuns through your Dazzle charge, and Comet Spear (Q) poke chunks your HP on an 11-to-8-second cooldown. Stay behind your minion wave levels 1-5, do not trade unless his W is down, and roam mid only after level 6 — Cosmic Radiance flips the matchup.
  • Blitzcrank: Free lane. Position so a Rocket Grab (Q) clips only you, never your ADC — Bastion shield + Plated Steelcaps means you eat the hook and walk away. Once his Q is on cooldown, W your ADC, walk into his face, E-stun, and your ADC kills him.
  • Soraka: Push lane. Q her every cooldown (Starlight's Touch heals you and your ADC even if she shields with W). Her Equinox (E) is a silence/root zone — sidestep it. She has no escape if you E-stun her with Bastion-extended range.
  • Brand: Respect his level-3 stun spike (Sear on a target with Blaze passive stacks). Don't trade inside your minion wave (his E ticks apply passive stacks); look for short Q-AA-back trades when his passive is not stacked on you. Solstice Sleigh's heal and speed proc plus Bastion shield carry you through his poke ~minute 14.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: With E + W unlocked, Bastion the ADC and E-stun through them. The Dazzle line fires from your ADC's position too, creating two angles the enemy support cannot pre-flash.
  • Level 6: R unlocks. Cosmic Radiance gives a 180-second "do-not-die" button for your whole team. Look for River fights and Scuttle (the neutral monster in the river that grants vision) coordinated with your jungler — start the R cast as your team commits, the invulnerability lands the moment burst connects.
  • Solstice Sleigh Solstice Sleigh completion (~ minute 14-16): Engage spike. The heal plus the 20% decaying Movement Speed proc on you and a nearby ally turns every Dazzle into a team chase or kite tool. Force Dragon and Rift Herald fights here.
  • Locket of the Iron Solari Locket online (~ minute 22-25): Teamfight spike. Pop Locket as Cosmic Radiance ticks — the AOE shield blocks burst in the 2.5s R delay, then invulnerability locks the result. Your team takes near-zero effective damage for 4-5 seconds.

Common mistakes

  • Breaking the Bastion tether. Taric without W bound is half a champion: no Armor share, no second-source spells, no extra-range stun. If your ADC backs, immediately W your jungler or mid if they're nearby.
  • Casting Cosmic Radiance reactively. R has a 2.5-second delay before invulnerability. If you press R when your ADC is already dying, they die during the delay. Press R when the enemy is about to commit their ult — timing should make invulnerability land the same instant their burst connects.
  • Charging Dazzle with no Bastion link. Solo E is a 610-range telegraphed stun, easy to dodge. Bastion-extended E fires from your ADC's position too, creating two simultaneous lines from different angles — that's the real engage tool.
  • Spending Q stacks too early. Starlight's Touch heals more per stack, so hold until you are at max stacks or until your ADC is genuinely low. Pressing Q the second it is off cooldown throws away most of the healing.
  • Engaging without your jungler nearby. Taric has zero mobility — no dash, no blink, no speed-boost from his kit. Once you E-engage you are committed; without backup you trade Flash and die 4v5. Always ping for assistance first.

Advanced tip

Practice the Bastion-extended E stun line: when your linked ally walks past your own 610-range cast, Dazzle fires from their position, not yours. Stand 800 units behind your ADC, E toward the enemy support, and the stun lands at ~1410 effective range — the enemy support cannot see Taric on their screen when the charge starts, so they cannot pre-flash. This is the single mechanic that separates Taric one-tricks from situational pickers, and the reason he stays relevant in pro play despite having no mobility tool whatsoever.
