Arcane Comet drops on every Worked Ground Q boulder for guaranteed poke procs. Manaflow Band fixes the mana crunch on a 55-75 mana Q. Transcendence adds 10 ability haste by level 8 so roam W is up more often; Scorch burns on your first hit every 10 seconds.
Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery gives sustain on a mana-hungry champion through the first 6 minutes. Cosmic Insight cuts summoner cooldowns and item active cooldowns, which means Flash and your Zhonya's stasis land in fights more often.
If the enemy team has 2+ squishies with low magic resist (Zed + Caitlyn type comps), swap Inspiration to Precision with Presence of Mind (mana refund on takedowns) plus Coup de Grace (+8% damage to targets under 40% HP) — pure burst over sustain.
Win Condition
Use Worked Ground patches to shove the wave, then Weaver's Wall to roam side lanes 10+ seconds before your enemy expects it; in teamfights chain W into E for a multi-mine stun on the priority target.
Weakness
Slow Q projectile and a 0.85s W aim window mean assassins with dashes hit you before you set up. Worked Ground bricks your Q damage if you waste the first cast on a wave you can't leave.
Overview
Taliyah is a mid-range control mage built on two ideas: map mobility through her passive Rock Surfing and Weaver's Wall, and predictive setup through Seismic Shove + Unraveled Earth. Her lane is a poke-and-shove loop — Threaded Volley clears the wave fast, then Rock Surfing lets her cross the map at near-boots speed along the river walls. She doesn't all-in her lane; she trades the lane for roams and forces the enemy mid laner to either follow (and lose tempo) or stay (and feed kills to side lanes).
Her game plan: shove with Q, leave mid through the river using passive speed, gank a side lane with W knock-up into E mine field. At level 6 the map shrinks to nothing — Weaver's Wall is a 6500 unit highway at rank 3 that can land her at bot lane in seconds. The hard part is patience: you have one setup combo (W + E), it has a long wind-up, and if you panic-cast it on a target with a dash up, you give up your entire fight contribution.
Recommended Build
Starting items: Doran's Ring + Health Potion. Ring is the mage starter — gives ability power, base mana, and on-kill mana refund per minion, which is exactly what Taliyah's mana-hungry Q wants.
Core items (in order):
Luden's Echo — first spike. Burst damage on a low-cooldown passive trigger, base mana stat sustains your Q spam, and ability haste lowers your W cooldown for chained pick attempts.
Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration. Your damage is mid-range and your targets buy Magic Resist boots; flat pen restores your DPS during the laning phase.
Zhonya's Hourglass — the stasis active (a self-cast invulnerability that locks you in place for 2.5 seconds) is your panic button against assassins that dive your back line. Cast it the moment Zed or Fizz commits ult on you.
Liandry's Torment — your second damage item. The burn applies per Q rock and per E mine, which means your AOE damage scales hard against tanks and clustered teams.
Rabadon's Deathcap — 130 ability power plus Magical Opus, which increases your total ability power by another 30%. By minute 30 it turns a 600 AP build into 780 AP, and Taliyah's full combo scales 1:1 with AP.
Situational items:
Void Staff — vs enemy team stacking magic resist (2+ champions buying Spirit Visage or Mercury's Treads). Percent magic penetration (the kind that scales with how much MR the enemy has) restores damage that flat pen alone cannot.
Morellonomicon — vs strong healing (Soraka support, Aatrox top, Vladimir mid). Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts the target's healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds when you damage them) lets your burst actually kill instead of being out-sustained.
Rylai's Crystal Scepter — vs slippery skirmishers (Yasuo, Yone, Camille). The on-hit slow applies to every Q rock and every E mine — your team converges before the target escapes.
Shadowflame — vs squishy backline targets (Caitlyn, Vex, Senna). A flat 15 magic penetration that never changes with the target's health, plus the Cinderbloom passive: your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% health for 20% extra damage — your follow-up Q after W + E setup executes them.
Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes by default. Swap to
Mercury's Treads vs hard crowd control teams (2+ stuns or charms on short cooldowns).
Skill order: Max Q first (waveclear plus main damage), E second (lower cooldown means more mine fields in fights), W last. Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Sorcery with Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Taliyah beats
Immobile control mage without a dash
Veigar has no dash to break Seismic Shove W's 0.85s aim circle and his Event Horizon E cage telegraphs his commit point. Taliyah lands a clean W displacement onto his own cage, chains Unraveled Earth E mines for the stun.
VeigarImmobile control mage without a dash
Anivia has no dash and Rebirth egg only saves her once per cooldown. Seismic Shove W displaces her out of the Glacial Storm R zone she was sustaining on, Unraveled Earth E mines stun the egg respawn frame.
AniviaImmobile control mage without a dash
Annie has no dash and Molten Shield E is a small shield, not an escape. Seismic Shove W's delayed knock-up lands before she can land Disintegrate Q for her Pyromania stun, Unraveled Earth E mines chain the displacement into a multi-mine stun.
AnnieStationary artillery mage with weak escape
Xerath's Arcanopulse Q needs charge-up time and he has no escape once Taliyah steps up. Threaded Volley Q's 5-rock spread out-shoves his waveclear, so Taliyah takes the wave, then Rock Surfing gets her to the side lane first.
XerathStationary artillery mage with weak escape
Ziggs's Bouncing Bomb Q has travel time and detonates in an area, and Satchel Charge W self-knockback is his only escape on a long cooldown. Threaded Volley Q out-shoves his waveclear, Seismic Shove W lands during W downtime.
Ziggs
Champions that beat Taliyah
Mobile assassin with multi-gap-close
Zed's Living Shadow W ignores Seismic Shove W's aim window — he swaps with the shadow onto Taliyah before the 0.85s delay finishes. Razor Shuriken Q chips her while she is stuck waiting on that delay, Shadow Slash E slows her in place.
ZedMobile assassin with multi-gap-close
Fizz's Playful / Trickster E makes him untargetable during the Seismic Shove W aim window and the stun frame. Urchin Strike Q closes onto her before the Seismic Shove W delay resolves, and Seastone Trident W chips her HP sustained.
FizzMobile assassin with multi-gap-close
Ekko's Phase Dive E closes onto Taliyah before the Seismic Shove W delay resolves, and Chronobreak R rewinds the damage if her setup does land. Timewinder Q passes through her on the return, Parallel Convergence W stun ambushes her at the side-lane gank point.
EkkoWind-wall projectile blocker
Yasuo's Wind Wall W blocks every Threaded Volley Q rock for 4 seconds, though it cannot stop the Seismic Shove W ground quake. Sweeping Blade E gives him the minion dashes to close before her W delay resolves, Steel Tempest Q knock-up sets up Last Breath R.
YasuoMobile skirmisher who closes before her setup lands
Yone has no wall, but Spirit Cleave W shields off her Q chip and Mortal Steel Q knocks her up at range once he holds 2 stacks. Soul Unbound E lets him reach her before the Seismic Shove W delay resolves, and Fate Sealed R drags her out of position.
Yone
Key matchups
- Veigar: You out-tempo him. Push with Q, roam at level 5 with Rock Surfing — his W and E lock him to the wave. Save your dodge timing for his E Event Horizon when re-engaging: it only stuns on the cage edge.
- Anivia: Stand sideways to dodge Flash Frost (Q). Punish her recall windows — she has no escape and her R Glacial Storm is a stationary zone. Roam with Weaver's Wall to bot lane on her first recall and snowball your ADC.
- Zed: Hard lane. Hold
Zhonya's Hourglass active for his R Death Mark — when you hear the audio cue and see his shadow dash, click stasis. Farm under tower until
Zhonya's Hourglass completes, then re-enter the lane. - Yasuo: Wind Wall blocks your Q rocks entirely. Don't open trades with Q — use W knock-up first to displace him out of Wind Wall range, then E mine field underneath him, then Q to finish. If he Q-tornadoes you, that's his only knock-up cooldown; trade hard immediately after.
- Annie: Even matchup pre-6. Track her passive stun stacks (visible above her head): 4 stacks means her next ability stuns. When she has stun ready, hold position outside Tibbers cast range; when she has 0-3 stacks, Q-poke her freely.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3: With Q, W, and E, you have a full setup combo. Throw W behind a target, knock them into E mine field, follow with Q rocks. Most mid laners eat 30-40% HP from a clean setup at level 3.
- Level 6: First Weaver's Wall. The map shrinks to nothing — you can shove mid, recall, and emerge at bot lane in under 12 seconds. Coordinate with your jungler on the first R roam: a single bot lane double kill is usually game-defining.
Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 12-14): Wave control flips. You one-shot the caster minions with two Q rocks each, freeing you to roam on every wave's back swing. This is your peak roaming window.
Liandry's Torment +
Rabadon's Deathcap (~ minute 24-27): Teamfight phase. Your W + E chain on a flanking target now stuns and layers Liandry's 3-second burn on top — enough for your team to delete a carry before re-engage.
Common mistakes
- Walking onto your own Worked Ground. Your first Q creates a patch where the second Q gives a slow boulder but no AOE volley. If the wave is on your patch and you Q a second time, you trade waveclear for a single rock — usually a bad swap. Move 200 units to the side before the second Q.
- Casting W on a moving target without leading. Seismic Shove has a 0.85 second delay before it erupts; you have to drop it where the target will be, not where they are. Lead by 200-300 units for walking enemies, more for sprinting ones.
- Using R as a fight tool instead of a roam tool. Weaver's Wall takes 1 second to charge, you cannot turn while surfing, and the wall blocks your own teammates as much as the enemies. Use R for map travel between fights, almost never to "split a teamfight in half" — that ends in your team being cut off from you.
- Spamming Q for poke on a low-mana bar. Threaded Volley costs 55-75 mana per cast and the second Q on Worked Ground still burns mana for a single boulder. Without
Luden's Echo mana, you go OOM by minute 6 and your shove window collapses. - Roaming without vision. Rock Surfing requires walls — but the wall path through the river is exactly where Lee Sin and Hecarim wait for invades. Drop a ward in the river bush before you commit your roam, especially on your first R at level 6.
Advanced tip
Practice the R-flank routine on level 6: shove the wave, recall to base, then cast Weaver's Wall from your tier-2 tower in a direction that arrives at the enemy bot or top tri-bush — not at the lane itself. The wall surfs over enemy vision wards, your champion model is visible only for the last 0.5 seconds at the dismount point, and you land on the side of the lane the enemies' team is not looking at. Done right, your ADC gets a free double kill before the enemy support has time to flash away. The window closes around minute 16-18 when teams start dropping pink wards in the river — but those first three R uses are usually the difference between a 4-2 game and a 2-4 game.
