Sorcery primary: Summon Aery procs on every W and Q hit, adding free poke or ally shield. Manaflow Band feeds W mana early, Transcendence adds 5 ability haste at level 5 and 5 more at level 8 for E and R uptime, Scorch chips enemies who escape the pull at low HP.
Resolve secondary: Bone Plating eats the first hook combo from Leona or Nautilus — Swain's whole kit needs to survive 1.5 seconds in melee, so reducing back-to-back damage is huge. Overgrowth stacks permanent HP that compounds with the passive Soul Fragments.
Vs heavy enchanter lanes with no engage (Yuumi, Soraka, Janna), swap Resolve to Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery (sustain through W spam) and Cosmic Insight (18 summoner spell haste and 10 item haste). You will not get bursted, so HP runes are wasted.
Win Condition
Land E to root, pull into Q range, then activate R to drain HP and stack Soul Fragments. The longer the game lasts, the more permanent HP you have and the harder you are to kill.
Weakness
Short effective range (E is 850, Q is a 750-unit cone). If E whiffs you have no follow-up and no escape. Hard countered by long-range poke supports and mobile dashers that walk through the E pull.
Overview
Swain support is a battlemage support — he sits in the same melee range as a tank, but instead of soaking damage he drains it back. His whole kit is built around landing one ability: Nevermove (E), a boomerang skillshot that roots whoever it hits on the way back. Once an enemy is rooted, Swain pulls them in, walks forward, and starts draining HP with Demonic Ascension (R) while spamming Death's Hand (Q) in their face. The pull is the only engage tool he has — if you miss E, you do nothing for 12 seconds.
The game plan is short and brutal: stand at the side of the lane that gives your E (a "skillshot" is an aim-and-shoot ability you can dodge) a clean return path, throw it through the wave, and pull the enemy support or ADC into a 1v2 that the rest of your team turns into a 2v2. Every champion he hits with W or E feeds Soul Fragments into his passive, which permanently raises his max HP — Swain literally gets bigger the longer you play. By minute 25 he is a tank-mage hybrid that out-heals enchanters and out-damages traditional tanks.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
World Atlas (the support starter at the head of the quest line that ends in Bloodsong; it pays gold over time and, through Shared Riches, whenever you finish a minion with an ally nearby) + 2
Health Potions.
Core items (in order):
Bloodsong — the support quest reward at the end of the World Atlas line. Mandatory: gold income, 200 health, and Spellblade, whose empowered attack after an ability leaves the champion taking increased damage for 4 seconds — it lines up perfectly with your Q + R rotation.
Liandry's Torment — Swain's defining damage item. The 2% max-health burn refreshes on every drain tick of your R, and Suffering adds up to 6% bonus damage the longer the fight runs.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity — ability haste boots. Cast E and R more often; as support you do not need movement speed for chasing, you need cooldowns.
Rylai's Crystal Scepter — every spell hit applies a slow. Synergises with the R drain (enemies cannot walk out of your aura) and with the W slow zone — pin grouped enemies to the ground while you tick them.
Shadowflame — extra burst plus Cinderbloom: its 15 magic penetration is flat and never changes with the target's health, while your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% health for 20% extra damage. Lines up with Demonflare (R recast) finishing low-HP enemies.
Situational items:
Mikael's Blessing — into hard CC threats on your ADC (Leona stun chain, Morgana Q, Pyke hook). The active cleanses CC on your carry; Swain has no peel of his own, so this is the only thing that protects the AD.
Locket of the Iron Solari — into heavy AOE engage comps (Malphite R, Yasuo + Wukong wombo — a "wombo" is when multiple ultimates chain together to catch your whole team). The active shield buys your team the second they need to respond.
Morellonomicon — into heal-stacking comps (Soraka, Yuumi, enemy team with Aatrox or Dr. Mundo). Its Grievous Wounds passive cuts their healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds.
Void Staff — the moment any priority target finishes their first magic resist item. A single 850-gold Negatron Cloak otherwise blunts about a third of your magic damage.
Boots:
Ionian Boots of Lucidity is default. Swap to
Mercury's Treads if the enemy has 3+ hard CC threats with magic damage.
Skill order: Max E first (lowest cooldown lever and your only engage tool), Q second (more damage per bolt for melee trades), W last (the highest mana cost and the longest cooldown; you cast it for the reveal and the slow, not the damage). Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, and 16.
Runes: Primary Sorcery with Summon Aery, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating and Overgrowth.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Swain beats
Untargetable attachable enchanter
You and Me! (W) attaches Yuumi to the ADC and Final Chapter (R) only slows, so she has no hard CC to stop you. Nevermove (E) returning hitbox catches Yuumi the instant she detaches to last-hit, and Demonic Ascension (R) drains the ADC through the Zoomies (E) shield.
YuumiMid-range backline support without escape
Piercing Darkness (Q) needs a target to lock on and locks Senna in place during the cast at 600 range. Vision of Empire (W) reveals her stand-still channel and Nevermove (E) roots her at the apex of her own kite, then Demonic Ascension (R) drains her low HP pool.
SennaShort-range peel enchanter
Whimsy (W) polymorph and Help, Pix! (E) shield are both single-target — Lulu has no AOE peel against a multi-target engage. Demonic Ascension (R) drains the peeler and the carry at once, and Wild Growth (R) knock-up cannot interrupt Swain's drain channel.
LuluReflect AP support without hard engage
Rebuttal (W) parries projectiles like Death's Hand (Q) but cannot stop the Nevermove (E) root-pull or the Vision of Empire (W) reveal. Swain drains her low HP pool through Demonic Ascension (R) before Golden Eclipse (R) reset window finishes.
MelSingle-hook engage tank
Dredge Line (Q) hook angles are revealed by Vision of Empire (W) before he casts, and Staggering Blow passive root requires Nautilus in melee where Demonic Ascension (R) drain out-heals his Riptide (E) damage. Depth Charge (R) AOE knock-up does not cancel the drain.
Nautilus
Champions that beat Swain
Long-range artillery mage support
Eye of Destruction (W) reaches 1000 units, and a charged Arcanopulse (Q) further still, against Swain's 850-unit Nevermove (E) — he is poked down before he can reach pull range and has no dash to close. Rite of the Arcane (R) snipes him mid Demonic Ascension (R).
XerathFrontloaded chain-CC tank engage
Zenith Blade (E) is an 875-unit line that dashes Leona onto the last champion it strikes, out-ranging Swain's 850-unit Nevermove (E). Shield of Daybreak (Q) plus Solar Flare (R) chain-stun him through Demonic Ascension (R) — he dies before the drain heals him.
LeonaHook support with carry execute
Death From Below (R) executes Swain the moment he drops under its health threshold, and that threshold grows with Pyke's bonus AD, so the drain healing only buys a moment. Bone Skewer (Q) pulls him out of Nevermove (E) recast range, and Phantom Undertow (E) re-engages.
PykeHook support with chain CC
Death Sentence (Q) pulls Swain out of his own Demonic Ascension (R) drain radius — he loses the only sustain that keeps him alive in melee. Flay (E) knock-back interrupts Nevermove (E) re-cast, and The Box (R) walls his post-pull retreat path.
ThreshStun-utility support with revive ult
Time Bomb (Q) plus Rewind (W) double-cast stun cancels Nevermove (E) recast and Chronoshift (R) revives the ADC exactly during Demonic Ascension (R) drain finish — Swain has wasted his ult on a freshly resurrected target with zero kill.

Key matchups
- Leona / Nautilus: Tank engages that out-range your E. Stand behind a minion at all times; let them flash-engage first, then E them while they are mid-cast — the root cancels their follow-up. Buy
Mikael's Blessing second item if they keep landing chains on your ADC. - Blitzcrank / Thresh / Pyke: Hookers. Hooks are single-target skillshots — the wave breaks them. Stand behind a minion; the moment they walk forward to find a hook angle, E through them. If your E lands first, the hook fizzles because they are rooted.
- Yuumi: Free lane. Yuumi has no body when attached to her ADC. W the ADC for vision; the instant Yuumi detaches to last-hit or proc her empowered auto, E her — the root buys you enough time to pull her into a Q + R kill before the ADC reacts.
- Xerath / Vel'Koz: Pokers that out-range you. You cannot trade in lane. Concede the early game: hug tower, give up wave priority, soak ambient EXP. Roam to mid lane the moment your R is up at level 6 — your R drain is far better as a 3v2 dive tool than a 2v2 lane trade against artillery range.
- Soraka: Out-press her by stacking spell damage faster than she heals. Every drain tick of your R undoes a full Soraka Q heal. The matchup flips the moment you complete
Bloodsong — until then, just survive and farm Soul Fragments by landing W on her.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 3 (E + W + Q): First spike. With one rank in E and one in W, you can E-pull through a wave and threaten a 2v2 burst. This is when your first
World Atlas gold target should come in: pull the enemy support, your ADC follows up, you walk away with a summoner spell or a kill. - Level 6 (R unlocked): Demonic Ascension is online. The drain heals you in melee range, so even a failed E-pull is recoverable: walk in, R, drain the ADC, walk out. This is the level where you start punishing every ADC who steps too far forward to last-hit.
Bloodsong +
Liandry's Torment online (~ minute 14-17): Damage flips. From here you out-trade every enchanter support and most tanks. Force grouped fights at first drake.- R +
Rylai's Crystal Scepter online (~ minute 20-24): Teamfight win condition. Pull two enemies with E, R on top of them, Rylai slow keeps them stuck in the drain aura. Every tick heals you and damages them — you become the second tank your team did not draft.
Common mistakes
- Throwing E for poke. Nevermove is your only engage tool with a 12-second cooldown at rank 1. Casting it through an empty wave just because it is up is a guaranteed gank invitation: the enemy jungler sees E on cooldown and dives you. Hold E until you see the enemy support step forward, then root them.
- Activating R outside melee range. Demonic Ascension drains only enemies inside its 650-unit aura. Popping R when the enemy is full-screen away wastes the entire cooldown for zero healing. R goes off after E lands and the pull connects, never before.
- Standing in front of your ADC. Swain looks tanky once he has Soul Fragments, but in the early game he is squishier than a tank ("squishy" = low defenses, high damage taken). Stand at the same depth as your ADC, never one step ahead — the enemy engage hits whoever is closest.
- Using R as a finisher instead of an engage. R is at max value when it lasts 6+ seconds and drains 3 targets. Casting it on one fleeing enemy with 200 HP burns a 120-second cooldown for a 200-HP kill you could have gotten with Q. Always R into the fight, never at the end of it.
- Never touching a champion with W or E. Soul Fragments come only from champions hit by Vision of Empire (W) and from the enemies your Nevermove (E) pull drags in; the ravens collect them for you, and each one heals Swain and permanently raises his max HP. A passive lane throws away the scaling this champion is built around.
Advanced tip
Practice the wall-bounce E. Nevermove travels in a straight line, returns to Swain, and roots anything it touches on the return path. If you cast E directly into a thin wall (the dragon pit lip, the entrance bushes of bot lane, the small wall above tri-bush), the projectile clips into the wall and the return triggers from there — meaning the root happens behind the wall, on enemies who thought they were safe. This is the trick that catches Yuumi mid-detach, fleeing ADCs trying to escape over the wall after a botched dive, and supports walking through bushes to ward. Once you can hit this consistently, your effective engage range doubles and the enemy bot lane has no neutral ground to last-hit from.
