Why these runes

Sorcery primary: Summon Aery sticks bonus damage and shield value to Sona's constant Q poke. Manaflow Band keeps mana topped up for aura spam, Transcendence stacks with Accelerando, and once Accelerando caps the extra casts shave her ultimate, Scorch closes lane poke at low HP.

Why secondary

Inspiration secondary: Biscuit Delivery gives free mana plus HP in the first 6 minutes when her base mana pool is tight, Cosmic Insight stacks more Ability Haste and shortens Flash and Heal cooldowns for the team-fight save.

When to switch secondary

Into hard-engage lanes (Leona, Nautilus, Pyke), swap Inspiration to Resolve with Bone Plating (damage reduction on the first 3 hits) and Revitalize (5% heal and shield power, plus 10% more on targets below 40% HP).

Win Condition

Stack passive Accelerando Ability Haste from constant aura casts, poke with Q plus Power Chord, then land a 3-4 target Crescendo to flip a team fight.

Weakness

No dash, 550 base HP, and a 900-range telegraphed ultimate. Hard engages and assassins delete her on sight; if she misses R the fight is a clean 4v5.

Overview

Sona is an enchanter (a healer-buffer support — heals and shields allies, buffs their damage) built around four short auras and one of the smallest health pools in the game. Her Power Chord passive electrifies every third basic attack with bonus magic damage, and the bonus effect changes based on her last cast: Hymn of Valor (Q) adds bonus damage (Staccato), Aria of Perseverance (W) cuts the damage the target deals (Diminuendo), Song of Celerity (E) slows it (Tempo). Crescendo (R) is a long, narrow linear wave that stuns every enemy hit for 1.5 seconds — the engage and follow-up tool that defines her team-fight identity.

Her game plan is constant aura uptime: cast Q on cooldown for poke (chipping enemy HP from range without committing to a full fight), W on cooldown for sustain (heal-shield), E on cooldown for kiting (moving back while attacking to keep distance) or chasing. Every cast feeds her Accelerando stack (the passive ability haste ramp), so by minute 15 her cooldowns are short enough to be permanent. Never engage first (start the fight) without R — her body is fragile and her only hard CC (crowd control, an effect that disables the target) is a 900-range line aimed from the second row. Late game, look for 3-4 target Crescendo angles around objectives.

Recommended Build

Starting items: World Atlas World Atlas (the support starter that quests into more gold income) plus 2 Health Potions. Skip damage starters: Sona scales off team utility, not solo kills.

Core items (in order):

  1. World Atlas World Atlas — becomes Runic Compass at 400 generated gold, Bounty of Worlds at 800 more, then a support legendary. Auto-stacks gold and ward charges every time you damage or assist.
  2. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity — Ability Haste (cooldown reduction) is the most efficient stat on Sona; default boots for enchanters.
  3. Moonstone Renewer Moonstone Renewer — Starlit Grace chains every heal or shield to a second ally: 30% of the heal, 35% of the shield. Pairs perfectly with Sona's three short cooldowns.
  4. Ardent Censer Ardent Censer — empowers any ally you heal or shield with bonus on-hit damage and Attack Speed. Best support item next to a basic-attack-heavy AD carry like Caitlyn or Jhin.
  5. Mikael's Blessing Mikael's Blessing — cleanses (removes) hard CC off an ally. Mandatory if the enemy has a single-target stun, charm, or hook on your carry.

Situational items:

  • Staff of Flowing Water Staff of Flowing Water — into AP carries who scale with Ability Haste (Hwei, AP Ezreal). Your W heal procs (triggers) the buff, giving them bonus Ability Power for the next attacks.
  • Redemption Redemption — when fights drag on (Drake, Baron, long teamfights). Big delayed area-of-effect heal you can drop from across the map.
  • Locket of the Iron Solari Locket of the Iron Solari — vs heavy AOE burst (high damage concentrated in 1-2 seconds, like Yone R or Kennen R). Active gives an instant team-wide shield that saves the back line.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — vs healing-stacking compositions (Soraka, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo). Your magic damage applies Grievous Wounds to enemies, cutting their healing.

Boots: Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity is the default. Mercury's Treads replace them if the enemy team has 3+ hard-CC threats aimed at the back line.

Skill order: Max Q first (the bolts damage and on-hit aura damage scale per rank — your main poke and trade tool), W second (more heal-shield), E last (only the Move Speed scales per rank). Take R at levels 6, 11, 16. Start Q at level 1 to win the first auto-attack trade.

Runes: Primary Sorcery with Summon Aery (sticks small damage and shield value to your spells — perfect for Sona's constant Q poke), Manaflow Band (mana sustain so you can cast every cooldown), Transcendence (Ability Haste plus extra haste at levels 5 and 8, stacks with passive Accelerando), Scorch (extra burn damage on the first spell every 10 seconds, for level-1-6 poke). Secondary Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery (free mana and HP biscuits for the first 6 minutes) and Cosmic Insight (more Ability Haste and shorter Summoner Spell cooldowns). Stat shards: Ability Haste, Adaptive Force, Health Scaling.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Sona beats

  • Long-range AD carry with strong basic attacks

Jhin's Whisper passive scales damage on bonus AD and Dancing Grenade (Q) bounces between targets, but he is immobile with no dash. Hymn of Valor (Q) empowers his next auto with on-hit damage and Aria of Perseverance (W) heal-shields him through trades for free.

    Jhin
  • Long-range ADC reliant on positioning

Caitlyn's 650 attack range and Headshot passive crit-poke from outside enemy auto range. Hymn of Valor (Q) hands her next attack bonus on-hit magic damage, and Aria of Perseverance (W) heal-shields her through the 90 Caliber Net (E) cooldown window for safe sieging.

    Caitlyn
  • Pure-sustain enchanter without hard CC

Soraka's lane is heal-only — Astral Infusion (W) costs her own HP and Equinox (E) silence-root is a slow telegraphed cast. Hymn of Valor (Q) plus Power Chord out-poke her regen, and a level-6 Crescendo (R) stuns through both her and the ADC before Wish (R) heal cleans up.

    Soraka
  • Stationary skill-shot mage support

Arcanopulse (Q) is a long-range line poke from a fixed cast position and Shocking Orb (E) is his only CC tool, a single skill-shot. Aria of Perseverance (W) heals through the Q poke while Song of Celerity (E) move-speed dodges the next E orb stun setup.

    Xerath
  • Skill-shot AP support without hard engage

Brand has no dash and Sear (Q) only stuns on a Blaze-stacked target. Aria of Perseverance (W) shield-heal blunts the Pillar of Flame (W) plus Conflagration (E) burn-stack window, and Crescendo (R) connects through Brand because Pyroclasm (R) is reactive only.

    Brand

Champions that beat Sona

  • Hook support with long-range pull

Sona has no dash and 550 base HP at level 1 — Rocket Grab (Q) lands once and either Sona or her AD carry dies before Crescendo (R) is online. Power Fist (E) knock-up chains for a guaranteed Static Field (R) silence-burst before Aria of Perseverance (W) can cast.

    Blitzcrank
  • Hook support with carry-execute ult

Bone Skewer (Q) charged pull lands on Sona's stationary cast position and Phantom Undertow (E) dash re-engages even if she E-walks. Death From Below (R) execute one-shots her low base HP before Aria of Perseverance (W) can heal her past the threshold.

    Pyke
  • Hard-engage tank support

Zenith Blade (E) jumps onto Sona from 875 range before she can line up Crescendo (R) at all, and Shield of Daybreak (Q) chains a point-and-click stun. Solar Flare (R) AOE stuns Sona outright, deleting her bot-lane peel before the kill commit.

    Leona
  • Roaming melee assassin

Living Shadow (W) plus Death Mark (R) double-dash delete Sona before Aria of Perseverance (W) can complete the cast animation. She has no Zhonya's-style escape baseline, and Crescendo (R) only reaches 900 units, so it cannot answer a gap-close from outside it.

    Zed
  • Attached enchanter that denies single-target poke

You and Me! (W) attached untargetable state denies Hymn of Valor (Q) poke on the carry, and each Final Chapter (R) wave stacks a slow that drags Sona off her Crescendo (R) angle. Zoomies (E) ally speed plus heal out-paces Aria of Perseverance (W) throughput.

    Yuumi

Key matchups

  • Caitlyn / Jhin (allied): Best partners. Q on cooldown empowers their next auto with bonus on-hit damage and they out-poke any opposing bot lane. Buy Ardent Censer Ardent Censer as third item to compound the Attack Speed bonus.
  • Blitzcrank / Thresh (enemy): Hook supports. Stand behind minions whenever you cross the river: Sona has no dash to escape Rocket Grab or Death Sentence. The hook lands once and you or the AD carry are dead — build Mikael's Blessing Mikael's Blessing earlier than usual.
  • Leona / Nautilus (enemy): Hard-engage tanks. Save R as a defensive stun — when they Zenith Blade or Dredge Line onto the AD carry, Crescendo on top of the engager to interrupt. Never burn R for poke into these matchups.
  • Soraka (enemy): Sustain mirror. You out-trade her with Q plus Power Chord auto. Force a level-2 all-in (full commitment to a kill, no disengage option): Q the wave, W on your AD carry, Power Chord into her face — all three land together before her Astral Infusion can ramp.
  • Lulu (enemy): Hardest enchanter matchup. Her W polymorph cancels your R mid-cast and her E shield negates your poke. Play for level 6: R from fog of war (the unwarded brush near the bot lane river) bypasses her peel timing before Wild Growth comes online.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: With Q at rank 1 plus W, you can shield-poke one short trade (a brief exchange of damage in lane, not a full all-in). Q the wave (the bolts auto-target the closest enemies — they prioritise champions), then W your AD carry as you both walk forward for the Power Chord auto.
  • Level 6: First Crescendo unlocks. Any 2v2 the enemy starts is now winnable — they engage, you R through them (it pierces all enemies on the line for 1.5s stun), W on the AD carry, Q to finish. Hard-flip the wave for objectives after the kill.
  • Moonstone Renewer Moonstone Renewer + Ardent Censer Ardent Censer (~ minute 14-18): Team-fight spike. Your AD carry's effective HP roughly doubles when you heal-spam through a fight, and every empowered auto adds extra on-hit damage from the censer.
  • Three legendaries online (~ minute 25): With Mikael's Blessing Mikael's Blessing added, you cleanse the one CC ability that would otherwise delete your carry. From here, every objective fight is a 5v4 if the enemy commits hard CC.

Common mistakes

  • Casting R for engage with no follow-up. Crescendo stuns up to 5 enemies for 1.5 seconds, but you need teammates ready to capitalise. R without an AD carry already at max-attack-range hits one or two targets and burns 100+ seconds of cooldown for nothing. Wait for your team to be in range first.
  • Holding Q to "save mana". Sona's Accelerando passive only stacks when you cast spells; refusing to cast them stalls your ability haste curve. Q on cooldown from level 1, even on empty lanes — the mana cost is offset by Manaflow Band procs and biscuits.
  • Walking forward to land Power Chord without picking the right charge. Power Chord always carries the effect of the last basic ability you cast: Q for the damage bonus, W to cut what the target deals back, E for the slow. Cast the one that fits the trade before you throw the auto.
  • Engaging first with R. Sona is a counter-engage and follow-up support, not a pick comp piece. If you R-flash in solo, your team rotates 2 seconds late and you die mid-channel without follow-up. Let the enemy commit first.
  • Standing in front to angle R. Sona has no dash and 550 HP at level 1. Cast Crescendo from second-line, behind the AD carry, aimed through your team — you do not need to be in the front to angle it.

Advanced tip

Practice the Power Chord swap mid-fight. Sona's basic abilities each charge a different Power Chord effect: Q for amplified damage, W to cut the damage they deal back, E for a slow. The charge persists until you spend it on a basic attack. In team fights you can cast Q for the poke aura, then immediately E to swap the Power Chord into Tempo without losing the Q's aura buff to your allies — when you finally land the Power Chord auto, it slows the priority target while your team continues to receive the Q on-hit damage aura. Cost: one E cast (65 mana flat), but the trade is a clean catch on a key target without telegraphing R. This is the single mechanic that separates a Sona who plays her keyboard from a Sona who plays the fight.
