Core Abilities

Backstab
Auto-attacks and Two-Shiv Poison deal bonus damage when you hit from behind. Pushes you to flank the lane instead of fighting head-on.
Deceive
Deceive
Short blink that turns you invisible. First attack out of stealth crits if it lands from behind. Engage on the support, or escape after a punished play.
Jack In The Box
Jack In The Box
Plant a hidden box that fears and damages the first enemy nearby. On AP Shaco it scales hard with ability power and is your main source of damage in fights.
Two-Shiv Poison
Two-Shiv Poison
Throws a dagger that damages and slows. Bonus damage on targets under 30% HP. Your AP poke and execute — Shaco Support is the only AP build that itemises around this E.
Hallucinate
Hallucinate
Spawns a clone that mimics your auto-attacks for a few seconds and explodes into three mini boxes on death. Use as fake engage, extra AOE in a fight, or zone tool.

Why these runes

Domination: Dark Harvest stacks on every low-HP takedown with E (a rune that grows AP damage on each kill). Cheap Shot procs on E slow for free true damage, Sixth Sense pings enemy wards covering W ambushes, Ultimate Hunter shaves R cooldown for repeated clone fake-outs.

Why secondary

Sorcery: Manaflow Band keeps mana for repeated W placements during early lane (boxes cost a lot without sustain). Scorch adds extra burn on E poke, closing kills before they recall.

When to switch secondary

Vs heavy engage supports (Leona, Nautilus, Pyke) swap Sorcery for Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery (free HP potions during minutes 0-6 when their level-2 all-in is strongest) and Cosmic Insight (faster summoner spells).

Win Condition

Win lane through level-2 box-bait kills and AP E poke. Place W triangles in the side bushes so any flank attempt funnels into a fear chain. Snowball into mid-game roams and turn vision corridors into traps.

Weakness

No shields, no heals, no peel for your ADC. If the enemy bot lane has all-in tools (Leona, Nautilus, Pyke), you cannot save the carry once the CC chain starts. Without pre-armed boxes, your damage is one E.

Overview

AP Shaco support is a niche pick that trades the standard utility kit (shields, heals, peel) for the highest level-2 cheese pressure in the bot lane. The plan: plant two Jack In The Box (W) traps in the lane bush before minions meet, wait for the enemy bot lane to walk into the side bush for an unwarded auto-attack trade, trigger the fear chain, Q in for the empowered crit, E for the slow + execute under 30% HP. If the first level-2 play hits, the lane snowballs (the early lead grows into more kills) and Shaco roams to mid for repeat picks.

The game plan after lane: stop trying to peel your ADC and become a vision-denial machine. Every river entrance, drag pit, and tri-bush deserves a W triangle so any flank attempt funnels into a fear chain. Mid-game pick comps (a composition designed to kill isolated enemies one at a time outside the teamfight) want Shaco for the R-clone-fake-out — the clone tanks the first stun while the real Shaco Q-flanks the carry from behind. Late-game, Dark Harvest stacks (a damage rune that grows by killing low-HP targets) turn your E into a one-shot button on any squishy who steps too close to your boxes.

Recommended Build

Starting items: World Atlas World Atlas (400 gold, the support starter) + 2 Health Potions. World Atlas becomes Runic Compass after it has generated 400 gold and Bounty of Worlds after another 800, which then transforms for free into Bloodsong.

Core items (in order):

  1. Bloodsong Bloodsong — the finished support item: 200 Health, 9 gold every 10 seconds and 4 ward charges. Its Spellblade turns your next attack after any ability into bonus physical damage on top of Backstab.
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes — flat magic penetration for the squishy targets you most want to delete.
  3. Luden's Echo Luden's Echo — 100 Ability Power, 600 mana and 10 Ability Haste, so W comes back faster. Echo fires six bolts off every damaging ability, so a single E splashes onto everything standing near the target.
  4. Shadowflame Shadowflame — 110 ability power and 15 flat magic penetration. Its Cinderbloom passive makes your magic and true damage critically strike targets below 40% health for 20% extra damage, which lines up with your E under-30% execute.
  5. Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap — late-game AP multiplier; turns each W box into a near-instant kill on squishies and stacks Dark Harvest charges in one box-fear chain.

Situational items:

  • Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass — vs dive comps with hard engage (Malphite, Leona, Rell): stasis (a brief untargetable window) saves you when the first stun lands and your box wall has not finished arming.
  • Morellonomicon Morellonomicon — vs healing-stacking comps (Soraka, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo, Yuumi). Grievous Wounds caps their sustain (their healing per second) through your E poke.
  • Void Staff Void Staff — swap when any priority target buys a Magic Resist item (Banshee's Veil, Spirit Visage, Mercury's Treads as third item).
  • Umbral Glaive Umbral Glaive — vs heavy ward setups (enchanter mirror, jungler that hovers your lane): Blackout reveals nearby stealth wards and traps so your attacks can smash them, which keeps Q stealth and W box ambushes actually invisible.

Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes by default. Mercury's Treads only into heavy magic CC chains (Ahri, Lissandra, Twisted Fate roams to bot lane).

Skill order: Max W first (the box damage scales massively with rank), E second (poke + execute), Q last (rank adds bonus damage, stealth duration and a shorter cooldown, but a box rank is worth far more). R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Domination with Dark Harvest, Cheap Shot, Sixth Sense, Ultimate Hunter. Secondary Sorcery with Manaflow Band and Scorch. Stat shards: Ability Haste / Adaptive Force / Health Scaling.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Shaco beats

  • Untargetable attachable enchanter

While Attached, Yuumi is Untargetable except from towers, so the host has to die first. Immobilizing effects put You and Me! (W) on cooldown: a Jack In The Box (W) fear locks the detached Yuumi out of re-attaching, and Deceive (Q) Backstab plus Two-Shiv Poison (E) finish her.

    Yuumi
  • Long-range backline support without dash

Last Embrace (W) is a delayed root and Piercing Darkness (Q) only reaches 600 units. Shaco's W box wall on river bush forces a fear trigger every time she walks up to soul stack, and Two-Shiv Poison (E) execute kills before Dawning Shadow (R) shield lands.

    Senna
  • Immobile marksman reliant on positioning

Strut (W) passive move-speed breaks the moment damage lands, and Bullet Time (R) is a stationary channel with no escape mid-cast. Deceive (Q) flanks behind her and a pre-placed Jack In The Box (W) in the side bush eats her step-up before Make It Rain (E) slow can chain.

    Miss Fortune
  • Slow tanky engage support without dash

Ferromancy: Crash Down (W) is a 450-range leap that cannot catch Deceive (Q) blinks. A Jack In The Box (W) fear interrupts her before Magnet Storm (R) pulls everyone in, and Two-Shiv Poison (E) chunks her between every Shattering Strike (Q) cast in lane.

    Rell
  • Save-the-ADC enchanter with short range

Bailout (W) save window is short-range and cannot reach a Shaco-flanked ADC. Deceive (Q) crit plus Two-Shiv Poison (E) execute kills the carry before Hostile Takeover (R) berserks anyone, and the W fear chain breaks her Handshake (Q) hook channel.

Champions that beat Shaco

  • Hard-engage tank with point-and-click CC

Zenith Blade (E) is a long-range dash that locks Shaco mid Deceive (Q) cast, cancelling the stealth start-up. Shield of Daybreak (Q) chains a point-and-click stun, and Solar Flare (R) AOE catches the Hallucinate (R) clone fake-out before Shaco can reposition the real body.

    Leona
  • Hook support with carry-execute ult

Bone Skewer (Q) lands the moment Shaco leaves Deceive (Q) stealth and re-pulls him back, and Phantom Undertow (E) dash re-engages even if Shaco blinks away. Death From Below (R) execute one-shots Shaco's low base HP before Hallucinate (R) can be cast.

    Pyke
  • Tanky melee engage with unstoppable window

Headbutt (W) plus Pulverize (Q) chain is uncancellable once it starts, and Unbreakable Will (R) damage reduction window shrugs off Two-Shiv Poison (E) burst entirely. Shaco has no shield or peel to soak the bot-lane stun chain back.

    Alistar
  • Enchanter support with point-and-click CC

Aqua Prison (Q) is a delayed AOE stun that catches Shaco the moment he leaves stealth, and Tidecaller's Blessing (E) hands her ADC bonus damage plus a slow you cannot walk out of. Tidal Wave (R) knock-up plus slow catches the Hallucinate (R) clone fake-out range.

    Nami
  • AOE mage support with stun chain

Sear (Q) stuns Shaco coming out of Deceive (Q) on a Blaze passive stacked target, and Conflagration (E) AOE chip clears the Jack In The Box (W) trio before they arm a fear. Pyroclasm (R) bouncing missile chunks both the real body and the Hallucinate (R) clone.

Key matchups

  • Leona: Avoid level-1 brushes. Her E Zenith Blade is a line skillshot that roots the last champion it hits and dashes her onto you. Stack W boxes in the side bush from minute 0:45 and refuse all trades until your ADC has Boots. Buy Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass earlier than usual.
  • Soraka: Free matchup. She has no dash and zero CC for a setup. Poke with E every wave; her Astral Infusion (W) heals do not out-pace Dark Harvest stack damage. Push for level-2 cheese with two W boxes in the lane bush.
  • Yuumi: Free matchup. Plant W under the ADC so the fear chain detaches her, then Q + E the now-exposed Yuumi for an easy kill. She has no escape once detached.
  • Senna: Range war. Her Q cannot be dodged, but it only reaches 600 units and starts on a 15s cooldown. Drop W in the tri-bush flank route and roam at level 6 with R + Q to chain picks on a champion that scales over time.
  • Pyke: Mirror the hook race. His Q charge cancels your Q stealth on contact. Keep your ADC behind a W box wall in lane bush, never push the wave past river without vision, and buy Umbral Glaive Umbral Glaive as the third item to clear his support's vision web.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2 (W + E): Highest cheese spike (cheese = an unconventional level-1 or level-2 play that catches the enemy off guard). Two W boxes pre-planted in the lane bush + E for the slow on a fleeing target. If the enemy bot lane walks into the lane bush blind, this is a near-guaranteed kill before they hit level 3.
  • Level 6 (first Hallucinate): Roam spike. R spawns the clone to bait stuns on a mid-lane gank, Q flanks behind the laner, E executes under 30% HP. The clone's mini-box explosion at the end zones the disengage path.
  • Luden's Echo Luden's Echo completion (~ minute 13-15): AP burst spike. Each E now triggers Luden's bolts for AOE damage, doubling the wave poke and turning a single W box hit into a kill-threat on the back line.
  • Rabadon's Deathcap Rabadon's Deathcap online (~ minute 25-29): Late-game spike. A single Dark Harvest-stacked E poke takes a huge bite out of a squishy ADC. Force objective fights around Baron with the W box wall pre-laid in the river entrance.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to peel your ADC like a normal support. AP Shaco has no shield, no heal, and no peel. If your ADC gets engaged on, you cannot save them — instead, force a counter-engage with a W box wall in their disengage path or look for the kill trade on the enemy carry.
  • Placing W boxes in visible lane. Boxes are for fog of war. A W planted on a pushed wave gets cleared by minions in one tick. Plant them in lane bush, tri-bush, river bush, and on the recall path the enemy must walk.
  • Auto-attacking from the front during level 2 cheese. Backstab demands you hit from behind. Always pre-position your Q-blink to land on the opposite side of the target — pathing through their face gives up the empowered crit damage.
  • Using R for damage instead of as a fake-out. Hallucinate is a deception button (clone runs forward while you stealth back). Late-game, the deception value is double the DPS value — practice splitting the clone away from your real body to bait engage.
  • Roaming with full mana and no boxes pre-stacked. Before leaving lane, plant two W traps along the river path you are about to walk. A returning enemy support steps into a fear chain on your way back and you flip the rotation into a kill.

Advanced tip

Drill the box-triangle vision lock on every objective setup. Three minutes before Drake, plant three W boxes in a triangle around the pit entrance the enemy will use — one on each side bush and one on the closer side wall. Any pathing attempt funnels into at least one fear, even if their support clears one of the boxes with an auto. Combined with your R clone running forward as bait, this single routine wins more objectives for AP Shaco than any item spike. The skill ceiling is the bush selection: read the enemy jungle's current camp and predict which entrance their support will use — usually the one closer to their own jungle, not the river crossing.
