Core Abilities

Absolution
Enemies that die near Senna leave a soul. Hit it with a basic attack to collect Mist, which grants permanent Attack Damage, attack range, and crit chance — your scaling stat is souls, not items.
Piercing Darkness
Piercing Darkness
Targeted beam that goes through an ally or enemy: damages and slows enemies in the line, heals allied champions in the line. Range 600, but your auto-attacks reduce its cooldown.
Last Embrace
Last Embrace
Long-range linear skillshot (1250). First enemy hit takes damage, then after a short delay they and nearby enemies are rooted. Your only hard CC — fish for it when the lane clumps.
Curse of the Black Mist
Curse of the Black Mist
Senna turns into mist for a few seconds: she's a wraith with bonus Move Speed, and allies in the cloud become camouflaged. Use for engage, escape, or sneaking past a ward into the back line.
Dawning Shadow
Dawning Shadow
Global beam in a wide line: damages enemy champions hit, shields all allied champions in a wider beam. Cast across the whole map for save-the-ADC plays or finishing kills out of fog.

Why these runes

Precision primary fits Senna's auto-attack identity. Fleet Footwork procs on auto and heals you, Absorb Life heals on every unit you kill, Bloodline stacks lifesteal from takedowns, Coup de Grace amps damage under 40% HP — exactly when Q finishes.

Why secondary

Sorcery secondary: Transcendence adds 5 ability haste at level 5 and 5 more at level 8, then refunds 20% of basic ability cooldowns on champion takedowns from level 11, Scorch adds chip damage on every Q to win poke wars in the early game.

When to switch secondary

Into all-in bot lanes (Draven, Samira, Pyke + Kalista), swap Sorcery to Resolve with Bone Plating (block 3 incoming hits for reduced damage) and Revitalize (+5% heal and shield power, +10% on targets below 40% HP) to survive the early commit.

Win Condition

Stack souls every wave by attacking soul orbs, scale range and crit past two items, and use global R to swing fights across the map. By minute 25 you out-range every enchanter.

Weakness

Slow attack windup and no dash. Hard-engage supports lock you before you can W or R, and your soul stacking is wasted if the jungler camps your lane in the first 6 minutes.

Overview

Senna is a unique champion: officially a support (the role that protects the AD carry in bot lane), but she actually scales like a marksman (a ranged auto-attacker, the role usually filled by the ADC). Her passive Absolution is the entire reason: every minion or jungle monster that dies near her leaves a soul orb, and hitting that orb with a basic attack gives her permanent Attack Damage (the stat that makes physical hits hurt more), permanent attack range (how far her basic attacks can shoot), and permanent crit chance. By minute 25 a fed Senna out-ranges almost every champion on the map and crits often. Her crits deal 160% damage instead of the 200% a standard marksman gets, so her output comes from stacked Attack Damage, range and armor penetration rather than from crit spikes. Her cost: she fires very slowly and has no dash.

In lane the game plan is to stack souls without stealing the AD carry's farm (you don't last-hit minions, you only hit the soul orbs they leave when your ADC kills them), poke the enemy with Piercing Darkness (Q) (a beam that damages enemies and heals allies in the same line), and look for Last Embrace (W) — her only hard crowd control (effects that lock the enemy in place) — when the enemy support and ADC are clumped together. Mid-game her global Dawning Shadow (R) turns Senna into a save button: a beam that damages enemies on a line and shields allies in a wider beam, castable from anywhere on the map. Late-game she becomes the second carry of her team.

Recommended Build

Starting items: World Atlas World Atlas (the unified support starter item) plus 2 Health Potions. Do not last-hit minions in lane — leave the gold to your AD carry. World Atlas pays your gold separately through its quest, and Senna stacks souls from soul orbs, not from minion kills.

Core items (in order):

  1. World Atlas World Atlas — the starter. It auto-evolves through Runic Compass Runic Compass and Bounty of Worlds Bounty of Worlds as you complete the support quest (basic attacks on champions and ward placements both stack progress). It funds your gold income without needing minion kills.
  2. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity — boots that give Ability Haste (a stat that lowers the wait between casts). Senna's Q comes back faster on every Ability Haste point, and her global R is most impactful when it's up twice per teamfight phase.
  3. Eclipse Eclipse — your first big damage item: 60 Attack Damage and 15 Ability Haste, with no lethality and no Move Speed on it. Two separate attacks or abilities on the same champion within 2 seconds trigger Ever Rising Moon — bonus physical damage worth 5% of the target's maximum health, plus a 75 (+20% bonus AD) shield. Senna is ranged, so she gets the reduced half of that effect: a melee buyer gets 8% and a 150 (+40% bonus AD) shield. The flat 60 AD is what makes her early autos and Q matter; the shield is what keeps her alive while she is still squishy.
  4. Lord Dominik's Regards Lord Dominik's Regards — gives armor penetration (the ability to ignore part of the enemy's armor stat). Senna's auto-attack damage scales hard with her soul stacks; without armor pen, late-game tanks like Sion or Ornn would simply not feel her crits. Build this when the enemy team has even one frontline tank.
  5. Rapid Firecannon Rapid Firecannon — adds attack speed, crit chance, and an energized attack every few hits that deals 40 bonus magic damage and reaches 35% further. It is not a critical strike, and the extra range applies only to that charged shot: on a heavily stacked Senna it is the one attack that reaches past 900, far enough to touch the enemy backline without entering their range.
  6. Bloodsong Bloodsong — the engage endgame upgrade of your support item. After any ability cast (Q, W, E, or R), her next basic attack deals bonus on-hit damage and marks the enemy for 4 seconds, amping all damage they take. Pairs cleanly with the ADC and jungler follow-up.

Situational items:

  • Youmuu's Ghostblade Youmuu's Ghostblade — into squishy back lines (Caitlyn, Jhin, Karthus). Adds lethality (a stat that ignores a fixed amount of the enemy's armor) plus an active Move Speed burst. Chains kills together in a roam window.
  • Bloodthirster Bloodthirster — into poke lanes (Xerath, Lux support, Karma). Gives lifesteal (you heal for a percentage of the damage you deal with basic attacks) plus an overheal shield. Lets you sustain through harassment at range.
  • The Collector The Collector — into low-resist comps. Execute passive ("execute" means an instant kill when the target is below a HP threshold) turns Senna's slow autos into guaranteed finishers on enemies below 5% HP.
  • Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps — alt boots vs auto-attack-heavy bot lanes (Caitlyn + Lulu, Twitch). 10% reduction on incoming basic-attack damage; pick over Ionian when surviving the lane matters more than spell uptime.
  • Lord Dominik's Regards Lord Dominik's Regards — already in the core path, but build it earlier (slot 3 instead of slot 4) if the enemy team has 2+ tanks already.

Boots: Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity by default — your global R is the highest-impact spell in your kit and the Ability Haste cuts its cooldown noticeably. Swap to Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps vs auto-attack-heavy comps.

Skill order: Max Q first — each rank adds 25 base damage and 20 base healing, but the 15-second cooldown is identical at every rank and the 1-second refund your basic attacks give is on-attack and does not scale, so ranking Q buys damage, not uptime. W second (longer root, more damage), E last (utility tool, rank-ups only reduce cooldown). Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Precision (the auto-attack-focused tree, all about sustained damage and lifesteal) with Fleet Footwork (a keystone — a "keystone" is the big top-tier rune that defines your build — that procs on attacks and movement, healing you and giving a Move Speed burst), Absorb Life (a heal every time you kill a unit), Legend: Bloodline (0.45% lifesteal per stack up to 15 stacks, plus 85 maximum health at full stacks), and Coup de Grace (extra damage to enemies below 40% HP — exactly the window where your slow auto-attacks need a finisher). Secondary Sorcery with Transcendence (free Ability Haste at level 5) and Scorch (a small damage-over-time on every Q). Stat shards (the three small stat boosts at the bottom of the rune page): Adaptive Force / Adaptive Force / Health Scaling.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Senna beats

  • Pure-peel enchanter with no hard CC

Glitterlance (Q) slow and Help, Pix! (E) shield are both reactive — Lulu has no engage to threaten Senna at 1250 range. Last Embrace (W) is a delayed root that catches her clumped behind the ADC, and Piercing Darkness (Q) heals through Whimsy (W) polymorph buff.

    Lulu
  • Speed-disengage enchanter

Zephyr (W) and Howling Gale (Q) push Senna's ADC out of trade range, but neither stops Piercing Darkness (Q) — the 600-range beam heals through the disengage and slows the retreat. Monsoon (R) is reactive only, and Last Embrace (W) lands before Janna can disengage.

    Janna
  • Ranged poke support without escape

Inner Flame (Q) is a 950-range skill-shot with no dash to follow up and Focused Resolve (W) requires staying in close range for the root. Senna casts Last Embrace (W) first from outside their poke range, then Piercing Darkness (Q) autos chip her down freely.

    Karma
  • Mobile dive enchanter

Last Embrace (W) catches Rakan in the post Grand Entrance (W) landing animation, and Piercing Darkness (Q) slow denies Battle Dance (E) re-engage. The 1250 Senna range plus global Dawning Shadow (R) flank punish his short dash window.

    Rakan
  • Save-the-ADC enchanter

Renata's Bailout (W) saves the ADC reactively but does nothing about Senna positioning at 1250 range. Handshake (Q) is a 900-range skill-shot that misses behind soul positioning, and Hostile Takeover (R) is a cone Senna can stand outside of while she stacks.

    Renata Glasc

Champions that beat Senna

  • Hard-engage tank with point-and-click CC

Zenith Blade (E) is a long-range dash that locks Senna before Last Embrace (W) finishes its delay, then Shield of Daybreak (Q) chains a point-and-click stun. Senna has no dash, so once Solar Flare (R) lands her slow autos cannot out-trade the chain CC.

    Leona
  • Hook tank with chain CC

Dredge Line (Q) is a 1150-range hook that pulls Senna out of soul stacking position, and the passive Staggering Blow chains an extra root on every first auto. Depth Charge (R) finishes with a knock-up that her stationary Piercing Darkness (Q) cast cannot dodge.

    Nautilus
  • Hook support with one-shot pick threat

Rocket Grab (Q) is a 1079-range hook that pulls Senna behind enemy lines, and Power Fist (E) knock-up chains for a guaranteed Static Field (R) silence-burst. Curse of the Black Mist (E) camouflage does not break a hook that was already mid-flight.

    Blitzcrank
  • Engage tank with multi-CC dive

Headbutt (W) into Pulverize (Q) dives past Senna's 600 Piercing Darkness (Q) range and chains knock-back plus knock-up before she can cast Last Embrace (W). Unbreakable Will (R) cleanses the crowd control and cuts most of the damage she can put out during the dive.

    Alistar
  • Artillery mage off-role support

Arcanopulse (Q) chunks Senna from up to 1400 range when fully charged and Shocking Orb (E) stuns through her cast time on Last Embrace (W). Rite of the Arcane (R) snipes her stationary auto-stance from screen distance, and she has no dash to dodge the long-range poke chain.

    Xerath

Key matchups

  • Lulu: Favorable. Lulu's Whimsy (W) only protects one target and her Glitterlance (Q) is shorter than your Last Embrace (W). Cast W from max range when she steps up to poke; the delayed root usually catches her ADC behind her.
  • Leona: Hard counter for you. Her Zenith Blade (E) is a long dash that roots you for 0.5 seconds, before your W root has time to delay-trigger — enough for her to land Shield of Daybreak (Q) for the actual stun. The ADC follows up, and you're dead with zero souls stacked. Stand far behind your minions, never push the wave past river, and save your E (Curse of the Black Mist) to break vision before her engage even starts.
  • Caitlyn (enemy ADC): Favorable for the matchup, hard to lane against. Caitlyn out-ranges you with traps and her Q at level 1. Stay behind the wave to deny her Headshot procs on you; once you have 2 stacks of souls and your W is at rank 2, you can W-Q-auto trade back stronger than her.
  • Draven (enemy ADC): Skill matchup. Draven's Spinning Axe (Q) hurts at level 1, but he must catch the falling axe to keep it spinning. Q (Piercing Darkness) through your own ADC to poke Draven the moment he steps up to catch an axe — the heal on your ADC + the slow on Draven flip the trade.
  • Yuumi (enemy support): Favorable. Yuumi attaches to her ADC and disappears as a hitbox, so your Q can still heal your ADC and slow theirs through the attached pair. Look for W on the moment Yuumi detaches to ward — the delayed root catches her before she can re-attach.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 3 (Q + W + E): Full kit online. Your first real trade window. W from 1250 range onto the enemy support, follow up with Q for slow + damage, and walk back to your minion line before they can answer.
  • Level 6 (R unlocks): Global pressure starts. Dawning Shadow is the impact: cast it across the map to finish a low-HP enemy mid laner under their tower, or to shield your jungler escaping a counter-gank. Use the global at minute 6 onward and you become a 5-lane support.
  • Eclipse Eclipse + 20-30 souls (~ minute 14-16): First damage spike, and souls are not the half that slowed down. Patch 26.13 raised the drop chance on an ally's kill from 28% to 32%, which is the number that matters on this role: almost every kill in your lane belongs to your AD carry. What the same patch halved is the drop chance on kills you take yourself, 10% down to 5%, so hand the last hit to your carry instead of stealing it. The flat 60 Attack Damage plus a quarter of your soul-stack value makes you a real damage threat for the first time. Group with your jungler for Drake (the dragon objective in the bottom river — kills give your team permanent stat buffs).
  • 3 items + 60-80 souls (~ minute 25-28): Each soul adds one unit of attack range on top of the 600 base, so at 60-80 souls you shoot from 660-680, and Rapid Firecannon's charged attack reaches 35% further still. You out-shoot enemy ADCs and out-range every enchanter. The counter still arrives on schedule; what shrank is what each auto pays out, because 26.13 and 26.14 both trimmed her critical strike damage in sequence: 180% before 26.13, 170% after it, 160% after 26.14, against the 200% a standard marksman crit deals. Force teamfights here anyway: your auto-attacks are the primary damage source for your team, they just win on volume, stacked Attack Damage and armor penetration rather than on crit spikes.

Common mistakes

  • Last-hitting minions in lane. Every minion you kill is gold stolen from your ADC. Senna doesn't need minion gold — she needs souls, which only appear from minions your ADC kills (or that the jungler kills in their own jungle). Stand back, auto the soul orbs, and never finish the minion yourself.
  • Wasting W on a poke. Last Embrace's value is the root, not the initial hit. A naked W into an empty wave wastes mana and gives the enemy support a free 11 seconds of safety. Fish for W when you see two enemies near each other — the AOE root delay punishes clumping.
  • Standing still while auto-attacking. Senna's autos are slow but they don't need to be stationary — you can move between every shot. Static positioning means a Nautilus hook lands on you instead of on the minion in front. Right-click to move, auto, move again. This is called kiting (moving backward between attacks to keep distance from the enemy).
  • Using R when allies are full HP. Global R is your save button, not a damage tool unless you're closing a kill. Wasting it on a level-3 skirmish where no one is below 50% HP costs you a 140-second cooldown at rank 1 for almost zero value. Save R for: a) finishing a low-HP enemy you can't reach, b) shielding a teammate who is about to die, c) sniping the back line during a teamfight commitment.
  • Ignoring the ADC's positioning. Your Q heals only allies it passes through. If your ADC is 800 range behind you, your Q can't reach them, and the heal is wasted on the wave. Match their positioning so your Q always passes through them on the way to the enemy.

Advanced tip

The E + W flank engage. Around minute 8-10, when the bot lane wave is pushing toward you, walk into the side brush of the river with your jungler nearby. Cast Curse of the Black Mist (E): your jungler enters the mist and becomes camouflaged (invisible at medium range, revealed only when an enemy gets close). Together you walk past the enemy support's ward into the side bush behind their lane. The instant the wave hits your tower and the enemy ADC steps up to last-hit, fire Last Embrace (W) sideways into the enemy support; the delayed root catches both the support and the ADC (they're clumped near the wave). Your jungler engages, your team's ADC follows up from the front, and you fire R through the back line at the moment they panic-flash. The drill takes practice, but a single executed flank usually ends the lane and starts your soul-stack snowball — pings your jungler 30 seconds before so they're rotating in time, and never E alone (the camouflage is wasted if no ally enters the mist with you).
