Domination primary: Hail of Blades adds 90% attack speed for up to 3 attacks, covering the AA + Q + AA combo after Phantom Undertow stuns. Sudden Impact adds bonus true damage after leaving W stealth or dashing with E. Sixth Sense tracks nearby hidden wards.
Sorcery secondary: Nimbus Cloak gives bonus MS the moment you cast Flash, perfect for chasing through walls after R blinks. Celerity adds a percentage MS boost that stacks with Boots of Swiftness and Ghostwater Dive.
If the enemy bot lane has heavy poke (Caitlyn / Lucian) or a hard engage support (Leona), swap Sorcery for Resolve with Bone Plating (early trade absorb) and Unflinching (10 armor and magic resist while you are CC'd, so you survive the chain that would otherwise kill you).
Win Condition
W from fog to close the gap, charged Q to pull, E for the stun, R to execute. Roam mid by minute 6 every time R is up and snowball picks across the map.
Weakness
No max-HP scaling: every HP item turns into AD, so you stay glass cannon (a champion with high damage and few defenses, like ADCs). Black Shield, knock-ups, and projectile blocks neutralise the entire combo.
Overview
Pyke is a roaming (frequently leaving lane to help teammates elsewhere) assassin support whose entire identity sits in two abilities: a hold-to-charge hook (a long-range pull skillshot, like Blitzcrank's grab) that drags a target toward you (Bone Skewer, Q) and a delayed-stun dash that locks them in place (Phantom Undertow, E). Add a Camouflage (a stealth state visible only when an enemy steps very close) approach (Ghostwater Dive, W) and a resetting execute — an ultimate that kills targets below an HP threshold and refreshes its cooldown on takedown (Death From Below, R), and you have a champion that does not protect his ADC — he kills the enemy one instead. Pyke shines below the threshold most supports cannot threaten: anyone under his R execute line (the white kill mark on their HP bar) dies the moment he gets in range.
His passive is the catch: he cannot stack bonus Maximum Health. Every HP item converts to Bonus AD (Attack Damage, the physical-damage stat) instead, so even a tank-style build never makes him tankier. The game plan: ambush bot lane (using W stealth to close from fog of war) until level 6, then roam mid every time R is up — usually starting around minute 6-8 — and hunt picks (isolated kills) around scuttle (the neutral river crab that grants vision) and dragon spawns where the enemy has no ward (vision item placed on the map for ~90s). The lead you build with picks across the map is the whole point: a fed (ahead in kills, gold, and items) bot ADC carrying the lead is the proof that you played the support role well.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
World Atlas +
Health Potion. World Atlas is the universal support starter. The quest auto-completes once you bank enough gold from kills and assists, and you upgrade into Bloodsong — the damage version that fits Pyke's kill-lane identity.
Core items (in order):
Bloodsong — support quest completion: health, gold income, and a Spellblade passive. After any ability, your next attack deals bonus physical damage on-hit and, if the target is a champion, marks them to take increased damage for 4 seconds. That mark lines up exactly with your E stun and Q pull. It also carries four charges of an invisible Stealth Ward.
Boots of Swiftness — slow resist plus base movement speed turn river dives into a one-way ticket. The roaming tier.
Umbral Glaive — lethality plus Blackout: it reveals enemy Stealth Wards and traps you walk near, and while they are revealed your attacks tear them down in a couple of hits. Clearing that vision is what keeps your W approach hidden. Signature Pyke item, every game.
Youmuu's Ghostblade — lethality plus out-of-combat movement speed, and an active that adds more of it on top. Stacks with
Boots of Swiftness and Nimbus Cloak for transcontinental roams.
Serylda's Grudge — armor pen plus a 30% slow that your damaging abilities apply, but only to enemies already below 50% health, so it closes kills instead of starting them. Lets you finish tankier carry targets past minute 25 when raw lethality runs out of value.
Situational items:
Edge of Night — into heavy single-target magic CC (Crowd Control: stuns, roots, charms — Morgana Q, Lissandra R, Twisted Fate Gold Card). Its passive grants a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability and saves your engage (your committed kill attempt).
Maw of Malmortius — into heavy AP (Ability Power, magic-damage) burst (a damage spike in 1-2 seconds) comps (LeBlanc, Syndra, Veigar). A magic shield plus lifesteal kick in when you drop to low HP.
Black Cleaver — when the enemy frontline (the tanks and bruisers who open fights, like Malphite, K'Sante, Sion) needs armor shred (reduces enemy armor stack-by-stack on hit) and your team has AD damage to follow up. Read it as a damage item on Pyke, not a bruiser one: the 26.16 buff took it to 45 AD, and his passive converts the Health it carries into bonus AD instead of a bigger health bar at a rate of 1 AD per 14 bonus health, so the 400 health on the item becomes roughly 29 AD — about 73 AD for 3000 gold, on top of the armor shred and the ability haste. He is melee, so he also collects the full version of the move-speed burst the same patch reserved for melee champions — that speed only fires while you are dealing damage, so it buys you the seconds between the E stun and the R recast, not the roam that got you there.
Mercurial Scimitar — vs lockdown chain comps (Skarner R, Malzahar R, Warwick R). The active cleanse (removes all crowd control effects from yourself) breaks suppression (a special hard CC that ignores tenacity) that would otherwise lock you out of your entire kit.
Mercury's Treads — alt boots vs AP-heavy CC. You lose roaming MS, but tenacity (resistance to stuns and slows) lets you survive long enough to W out of the engage chain.
Boots:
Boots of Swiftness by default. Swap to
Mercury's Treads vs heavy AP CC, or
Ionian Boots of Lucidity if you need maximum R uptime over movement speed.
Skill order: Max Q first (damage, slow, and pull range scale together), then E for lower stun cooldown, W last. Take R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Domination with Hail of Blades, Sudden Impact, Sixth Sense, Relentless Hunter. Secondary Sorcery with Nimbus Cloak and Celerity. Stat shards: Adaptive Force, Adaptive Force, Health Scaling.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Pyke beats
Squishy aura enchanter without escape
Sona has no dash to break Pyke's Ghostwater Dive approach, and Aria of Perseverance heal cannot outpace Bone Skewer pull plus Phantom Undertow stun chain. Crescendo R is a slow skillshot Pyke dodges with W invisibility.
SonaUntargetable attached enchanter
Yuumi has no dash and her You and Me! attach mechanic forces her ADC to stand still — perfect setup for Bone Skewer pull plus Phantom Undertow stun chain. Final Chapter R requires standing still, which Phantom Undertow stuns through.
YuumiSlow-bomb utility enchanter support
Zilean has no dash to break Pyke's Ghostwater Dive approach, and Time Warp on himself is only a brief speed-up, not enough to leave the range of a charged Bone Skewer. Chronoshift R revives the ally Pyke just executed but resets the cooldown of Death From Below on that very kill.
ZileanPermaslow utility ADC without dash
Ashe has no dash and Volley's slow does not stop Pyke's Bone Skewer charging from inside Ghostwater Dive's fog. Phantom Undertow stun seals the lockdown chain before Ranger's Focus can ramp her trade burst.
AsheLong-range trap marksman without dash
90 Caliber Net (E) is Caitlyn's only escape and it fires her backwards, so once she spends it she has nothing left against a charged Bone Skewer (Q) pull. Yordle Snap Trap (W) on the wave tells you where she expects you to walk, which is exactly where you should not charge from.
Caitlyn
Champions that beat Pyke
Anti-CC AP burst support
Morgana's Black Shield prevents Phantom Undertow stun on her ADC and blocks Bone Skewer's slow-on-pierce — without the lockdown chain, Pyke cannot reach Death From Below execute range.
MorganaConcussive-blow shield tank support
Braum's Unbreakable wall intercepts the charged Bone Skewer pull projectile entirely, blocking the engage chain. Concussive Blows passive stuns Pyke after four hits stack during the W approach, and Glacial Fissure R AoE knock-up locks him out of Phantom Undertow dash range.
BraumSunlight chain-CC tank support
Leona's Zenith Blade dash lands before Pyke's Bone Skewer finishes charging, and Shield of Daybreak stun locks him out of Phantom Undertow dash setup. Solar Flare R AoE stun catches Pyke during his W invisibility approach.
LeonaSingle-target hook tank support
Nautilus's Dredge Line hook lands before Pyke's Bone Skewer finishes charging, and Riptide slow plus Staggering Blow passive chain him out of Phantom Undertow dash setup. Depth Charge R is a guided stun that pierces terrain — Pyke cannot W invisibility out of it.
NautilusKnock-up engage cavalry support
Rell's Ferromancy: Crash Down lands before Pyke's Bone Skewer finishes charging, knocking him up out of W invisibility approach. Magnet Storm R AoE attract pulls Pyke into her ADC's auto range, and Shattering Strike pierce shred breaks his low base armor during the lockdown.

Key matchups
- Soraka: No dash, no hard CC. Wait for her Astral Infusion (W) heal animation, then W-E into her — she cannot escape your stun and
Bloodsong's damage amp deletes her before her Q heals tick. The downside: her late-game team healing can outpace your snowball if you fall behind. - Janna: Hard counter to your engage. Her Howling Gale (Q) knocks you up mid Phantom Undertow dash. Save E for after she throws Q, or roam mid and farm picks she cannot follow. Never commit R when Monsoon (R) is up — she will push you out of execute range every time.
- Morgana: Wait out Black Shield (E) before committing Q-E on her ADC. If she lands her Dark Binding (Q) on you first, you are usually dead — stay behind your minions in lane and only charge Q from positions she cannot see.
- Leona: Her Zenith Blade (E) is faster than your charged Q. Pre-6 do not duel her at point-blank; W away if you see her step up, then re-engage when her E is on cooldown. Buy
Edge of Night if she keeps landing Solar Flare (R) on you. - Tristana: Her Rocket Jump (W) escapes your charged Q pull window. Hook her only after she has used W. At 6, her Buster Shot (R) knock-back can push you out of your own R execute range — bait it before you commit.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2: With Q plus E, you can W-flank from tri-bush and chain a kill before the enemy ADC's Flash (the universal summoner spell that blinks the caster a short distance) cooldown ends. Best level for first blood.
- Level 6: Death From Below (R) unlocks. Bot lane swings to a snowballing lead (a growing advantage where each kill funds more items, which fund more kills — watch the enemy ADC's health bar for the white execute mark), and you can roam mid for the first time.
- Bloodsong completion (~ minute 10-12): Lane phase is irrelevant. Your job is bot tower dives at the 2-wave plate timing, then a mid roam during dragon setup. Your team's lead grows from picks, not from CS.
- Three lethality items online (~ minute 22-25): Death From Below executes below a flat health value, not a percentage: 250 to 550 by level, plus 80% of your bonus AD, plus 1.5 per point of Lethality. At three lethality items that lands around 750-800 health — roughly a third of a three-item marksman and most of a support — so read the number, not the percentage bar. Force objective fights here — every dragon spawn is a kill window.
Common mistakes
- Holding Q at max charge in the open. The hold animation is loud and visible: anyone with vision dodges the pull. Charge Q only from fog of war (areas without enemy vision) or behind a minion.
- Burning W to escape. Ghostwater Dive is your only engage tool. If you W out of every gank, you have nothing left to set up a kill next minute. Better to die warding the lane than to die without W up at minute 4.
- Using R as an opener. R is an execute, not a gap closer. The blink is short and predictable; use it only when the target is already under the white kill mark on their HP bar.
- Roaming with the wave shoved toward your ADC. A pushed wave with Pyke missing from lane gets fast-shoved into your tower; your ADC loses CS, plates, and tower HP. Roam only when the wave is bouncing or already crashing on enemy tower.
- Auto-attacking before the Q proc. Your AA + Q stab + AA combo is the Hail of Blades burst window. Throwing an early AA burns one of the three Hail of Blades attacks before the stab connects.
Advanced tip
Pyke's R reset has a hidden interaction with E: if you cast E while R is mid-cast, you can stun targets you do not even land R on. Practice the R-E-recast-R combo on bot lane fights: blink to one execute target, E through the enemy backline, recast R on whoever survives — the dash carries you out of follow-up CC, while the stun keeps both targets locked for your team's burst. Mastering this turns a 1-for-1 trade into a double-kill execute chain.
