Resolve primary with Aftershock: the Heroic Charge wall stun triggers the bonus resists, while the Steadfast Presence grounding does not, since Aftershock needs immobilising CC. Bone Plating eats poke, Font of Life heals you and your lowest-HP ally on CC, Overgrowth feeds HP.
Inspiration secondary: Hextech Flashtraption gives a backup Flash (Hexflash) for fog-of-war E setups when summoner Flash is down; Cosmic Insight shortens Flash and item active cooldowns so Locket and Heroic Charge come back faster.
Vs heavy auto-attack bot lanes (Tristana, Draven), swap secondary to Precision with Triumph (HP back on takedown for surviving 2v2 trades) plus Coup de Grace (+8% on low-HP targets — relevant to finish wall stuns). Keep Resolve keystone.
Win Condition
Open fights with Heroic Charge into a side wall (lane brush, river ledge, jungle alcove) for a stun setup; let your ADC finish. Late-game your job is peel — drop W on top of any diver to deny their dash.
Weakness
Almost no ranged poke — Q outranges only a melee minion. If the enemy bot lane keeps you out of E range, you give up the lane phase and roam instead. No reliable hook means engage is fully telegraphed.
Overview
Poppy support is a vanguard (a tank class whose job is to start fights, not heal allies) with two unique anti-engage tools welded onto a duelist's kit. Steadfast Presence (W) is the cleanest dash-cancel in the game — Yasuo Sweeping Blade, Leona Zenith Blade, Rakan Grand Entrance all get cancelled mid-air, leaving the enemy grounded and your team a free target. Heroic Charge (E) is a dash that pushes the target into a wall for a stun; the entire bot side of the map (lane brush walls, tri-bush corners, river ledges) is wall terrain for setups. Hammer Shock (Q) is a short-range trade tool with a slow tick. Keeper's Verdict (R) has two modes — quick-cast knocks up for 1 second in a small zone (great for cancelling Yasuo R or peeling a diver), full charge punts targets across the map.
Game plan: in lane, hide in bot brush, wait for the enemy ADC to walk up to last-hit, then E them into the lane-edge wall — your ADC follows up while your Q ticks the slow. Mid-game, roam (leave bot to help mid or jungle) on cooldown — your W wins jungle fights against any dash-reliant champion. Late-game, you are the peel (protect your own carry) tank — when an enemy diver lands on your ADC, W denies their dash, E kicks them away, and R quick-cast punts them out of the fight.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
World Atlas (the unified support starter) plus 2 Health Potions. World Atlas pays you 18 gold per Shared Riches charge, and killing a minion is one of the ways to spend a charge, which also hands the nearest ally the normal kill gold: use the charges on the minions your ADC cannot reach, and do not stand in the wave taking every last hit, because that costs your ADC tempo. The 26.16 rework also raised her base health regeneration from 8 to 9, which is a support-sized gain: it stretches the two potions across a poke lane and lets you hold the brush without recalling for chip damage. Stealth Ward trinket — drop on lane brush before minute 2.
Core items (in order):
World Atlas — auto-evolves to
Runic Compass and
Bounty of Worlds as you proc the quest with assists and ward usage.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity — ability haste boots. Lower cooldowns on W and E mean more dash denials per minute, and summoner spell haste means Flash is up more often for E-Flash setups.
Locket of the Iron Solari — Armor, Magic Resist, and an active that shields all nearby allies. Pop the moment you E so your team soaks the enemy's first burst (high damage in the first 1-2 seconds).
Jak'Sho, The Protean — HP, Armor and Magic Resist, plus a passive that raises your bonus resists by 30% after 5 seconds of champion combat. Fits Poppy's role of being the one who soaks teamfight focus.
Solstice Sleigh — the engage-focused endgame support upgrade. Carries a CC proc: when you immobilize an enemy (your E stun counts), you and a nearby ally gain Move Speed and HP for a few seconds.
Situational items:
Mercury's Treads — swap boots when enemy has 3+ AP threats or heavy hard CC chains. Tenacity (a stat that shortens crowd-control duration on you) lets you finish your Q-AA after eating an enemy stun.
Knight's Vow — bond to your ADC: you take 14% of the damage they receive, and you heal for 12% of the damage they deal to champions. Great into comps with an isolatable hyper carry (Kog'Maw, Jinx).
Kaenic Rookern — passive magic shield that regenerates while out of combat. Pick into AP burst supports (Brand, Zyra, Vel'Koz) — the shield eats one full ability rotation.
Zeke's Convergence — casting your ultimate summons a storm around you for 5 seconds that deals 30 magic damage per second and slows enemies by 30%. Pick it when your R lands you in the middle of the enemy team.
Unending Despair — vs heavy AOE engage comps (Malphite, Amumu, Kennen). Periodically deals magic damage to nearby enemies and heals you — combine with Locket active to soak a wombo combo (full enemy team follow-up engage).
Boots: Default
Ionian Boots of Lucidity for the ability haste — every 10 cooldown points off Heroic Charge is roughly one extra engage per teamfight cycle. Swap to
Mercury's Treads vs AP-heavy comps.
Skill order: Max E (Heroic Charge) first — lower cooldown means more engage windows. Max W second purely for the cooldown, which drops from 20 seconds at rank 1 to 12 at rank 5 — the 2-second active and the passive resists are identical at every rank. That passive is worth the slot from rank 1 anyway: 16% of your total Armor and Magic Resist since 26.16, up from 12%, doubled to 32% below 40% Health. That is where the durability Riot gave her in the rework actually lives. Max Q last — rank-up mostly adds damage, though 26.16 did make that damage scale, 7 / 7.5 / 8 / 8.5 / 9% of the target's maximum Health per rank instead of a flat 9%, while the slow went the other way (20 / 23 / 26 / 29 / 32%, down from 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40%). Take R at levels 6, 11, 16. The 26.16 rework paid for the E-first pattern: 300 base mana growing 45 per level (up from 280 and 40) means you can spend W on a dash you are only half sure about and still have the bar for the E engage two waves later.
Runes: Primary Resolve with Aftershock (free resists when you land immobilising CC — it fires on the Heroic Charge wall stun, not on the W grounding, which is only a slow), Font of Life, Bone Plating, Overgrowth. Secondary Inspiration with Hextech Flashtraption (a backup Flash on a long cooldown — perfect for E setups when your real Flash is down) and Cosmic Insight (less cooldown on Flash and item actives). Stat shards: Adaptive Force / Adaptive Force / Health.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Poppy beats
Sunlight dash engage tank support
Leona's Zenith Blade dash gets stopped mid-air by Steadfast Presence — she lands grounded, slowed, and unable to follow up Shield of Daybreak stun. Heroic Charge wall-stun follow-up locks her against bot lane terrain.
LeonaSingle-target hook tank support
Nautilus's Dredge Line hook is a dash that Steadfast Presence cancels mid-air — he lands grounded, slowed, and unable to chain the Riptide slow. Heroic Charge wall-stun then locks him against terrain.
NautilusDash-engage enchanter support
Rakan's Grand Entrance is a dash Steadfast Presence cancels mid-air — he lands grounded, slowed, and unable to chain Battle Dance ally-recall escape. Heroic Charge wall-stun against bot lane terrain locks him for ADC follow-up.
RakanKnock-up combo tank support
Alistar's Headbutt is a dash that Steadfast Presence cancels mid-air — he lands grounded, slowed, and unable to chain Pulverize knock-up combo. Trample stack damage cannot proc through the disengage.
AlistarLong-range hook engage support
After landing Death Sentence, Thresh relies on Flay knockback or Dark Passage lantern to close — both can be cancelled by Keeper's Verdict quick-cast knocking him back out of range of his hooked ADC.
Thresh
Champions that beat Poppy
Long-range root AP poke support
Lux's Light Binding has 1175 range and roots Poppy while she walks forward to commit Heroic Charge, cancelling the dash mid-cast. Lucent Singularity slow then zones her out of the 475 range of Heroic Charge before she can close.
LuxArtillery long-range poke mage support
Xerath's Eye of Destruction pokes from 1000 range without Poppy ever pressing a button back, keeping her outside the 475 range of Heroic Charge and bleeding her HP across the lane phase.
XerathAnti-CC AP burst support
Morgana's Black Shield blocks Poppy's Heroic Charge stun entirely — the dash connects but the wall-stun never procs, leaving Poppy stranded next to the ADC with no follow-up.
MorganaCleanse enchanter support
Milio's Breath of Life R cleanses Poppy's Heroic Charge wall-stun the moment it lands, undoing her single committed engage for free. Warm Hugs shield plus speed buff peels the ADC out of Hammer Shock harass range.
MilioAoE-stun shield aura enchanter support
Sona's perma-shield Aria of Perseverance plus Crescendo R AoE stuns Poppy in the W-engage moment, denying Steadfast Presence follow-up. Hymn of Valor poke damage chips her at long range outside 475 E commit.
Sona
Key matchups
- Leona: Favorable. Hold W until you see her Zenith Blade (E) projectile. Tap W as it arrives — she gets grounded mid-cast, dash fails, your ADC kills her support out of position.
- Thresh: Skill matchup. His Death Sentence (Q) out-ranges your Heroic Charge (E) (1075 vs 475). Stand behind your ADC so the hook lands on you, not the carry, and your E can still answer when he flays in for follow-up.
- Lux: Hard counterpick. Light Binding (Q) roots you from 1175 range while you walk toward E range. Take
Mercury's Treads early for tenacity, sit in brush for vision, roam mid as soon as you hit level 6. - Morgana: Hard counter into your engage. Black Shield (E) blocks the Heroic Charge stun — you flash in for nothing. Track its cooldown: 26 seconds at rank 1, down to 16 once she maxes it. Commit only in the window where it is down.
- Pyke: Even matchup. His Bone Skewer (Q) runs from 400 to 1100 range depending on how long he charges it, so the ~600-unit gap over your E only exists at full charge; on a quick tap he is shorter than your 475.
Plated Steelcaps blunt the poke, but do not count on Aftershock here — it only fires when you land the Heroic Charge (E) wall stun. After the 26.16 damage cut you do not win the raw auto exchange, so only commit Heroic Charge (E) when there is a wall behind him and your ADC is in range to convert the stun. After level 6 his Death From Below (R) resets on takedown — never let your ADC drop below 30% HP when Pyke is on the map.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2 (W + E): First spike. With W to deny enemy dash and E to wall-stun, you can punish any over-extended enemy support — flash-E a Leona standing on a wall edge, your ADC converts. Since 26.16 she starts on 56 base attack damage instead of 60, so read the punish for what it always was on this role: you sell the stun and the grounded target, your ADC sells the damage.
- Level 6 (R unlocks): Engage and disengage both unlock. Quick-cast R cancels enemy ults like Yasuo R or Tryndamere R; full-charge R yeets a backline target across the river. Most R kills come from quick-cast wall stun follow-ups.
Locket of the Iron Solari completion (~ minute 14-16): First teamfight item. Your E engage drops a free team shield. Group for Drake (dragon objective in the bottom river — gives permanent stat buffs) or Voidgrubs (small monsters in the top river that give bonus damage to structures).
Jak'Sho, The Protean online (~ minute 22-26): Mid-game peak. Jak'Sho's 30% boost to your bonus resists plus Aftershock turn the 2 seconds of W active into the window where the enemy engage simply does not arrive, with Aftershock's 2.5 seconds of resists layered on top once the wall stun lands. Run at the enemy mid-laner and trade your HP bar for their carry's positioning.
Common mistakes
- W too late. Players hold Steadfast Presence waiting for the "perfect" engage. By then the enemy Yasuo has already dashed through your ADC. Press W as the dash starts, not after. Reaction speed beats prediction here.
- E from open ground. Heroic Charge in open lane just pushes the enemy backward harmlessly. Before pressing E, locate a wall on the dash path: lane brush corner, river edge, alcove. No wall = no stun = wasted mana.
- Solo engage at 2v2 with bad summoner counts. Don't open a fight when your ADC is out of mana or has no Flash and the enemy bot lane is healthy. Poppy's E commits forward — you can't disengage your own engage.
- Picking up the buckler in danger. Iron Ambassador (P) drops a shield-pickup on the ground after every empowered AA. Don't walk forward into enemy harass to grab it. The buckler only stays on the ground for 4 seconds, so if it lands in a bad spot, write it off.
- Full-charge R in melee range. Keeper's Verdict at full charge slows you while you wind up and dies to any stun or silence, and at melee range a quick-cast does the same job for a fraction of the cooldown. Save full-charge R for sniping a low-HP runner across the map or peeling a carry from afar.
Advanced tip
Master the Hexflash-E stun combo. Hextech Flashtraption (Inspiration rune) gives a 2-second channeled Flash on a long cooldown — perfect for support setups. Sit in fog of war (the unwarded brush near the lane bush wall). Channel Hexflash so it pops at the exact moment your E completes; the dash extends through your Hexflashed position and lands E on the unsuspecting enemy ADC standing to last-hit. The wall stun follows automatically since you positioned the angle pre-Hexflash. This is Poppy's signature engage at every rank — practice the timing in Practice Tool until you can land Hexflash-E-Q on a stationary dummy in one fluid sequence under 1 second.
